View Full Version : OT: Electric Shaver that works?

I can't stand shaving with a normal razor. I always end up with bumps and cuts along my neckline, (I cut with the grain, but it doesn't matter) and I have to wait 3-4 days between shaves or else the problem gets bad.

I'd like to switch to an electric, but I've never had good luck with them in the past. Does anyone out there have a model that actually works really well, and that doesn't mess up your skin? I'd be willing to pay upwards of $1000, as long as I get something that really works. Hell, I'm considering just getting my face waxed at this point...

Thanks...

-Drew

Out of curiosity what type of razor have you been using to this point?

I feel your pain Drew. As someone who gets their ass kicked everytime by a razor, I'd like an answer to your question as well.

I never had any luck with electrics in the past. They've all torn me up and left me with stubble. Nowadays I'm forced to shave once a week with a straight, multi-blade razor....even then it usually looks as if I took a load of buckshot in my face & neck when finished (and I shave correctly "with the grain" as well)...I have wavy to curly hair, so ingrowns are also a frequent problem for me. Waxing? Believe it or not, at this point if I found somewhere that would do it, I would. Hell, if I found a dilapatator somewhere that would work, I'd do that too....the result couldn't be any worse than it would after a normal shave.

Ever consider just giving up and growing a beard? I use to do that, but I hate maintaining it.

I had just the opposite reaction. I tried an electric shaver and it irritated my skin as well as didn't cut as close as my Mach 3 Turbo. I went back to the blades. If I lived back in Denver I would go to my dad the barber and have him do a straight razor cut.

I have the same problem. If I shave with a razor, I have to endure a week of stubble before my face lets me shave it again.

Electric razors have their flaws but you can at least use them every day. There are none I'm totally happy with and I've tried every well-known brand. I am happiest with Panasonic although they are not easy to find and you get zip as far as product support. For important days, a little talc-like powder gets me a bit closer to satisfactory.

Like baldness cures, I've decided there's no such thing as a perfect shave. It's just Madison Avenue trying to sell you a bill of goods.

Oh, and don't try waxing. I had my back waxed once. It stung like holy hell, itched half the time and grew back in a month. I can only imagine it would be worse on the face. I have no idea how women can stand getting their pubes waxed.

Bic Sensitive. An ex-GF made me shave my balls. Don't even go there. It was like, "What's good for the goose is good for the gander or something..."

Immediately after a shower works best for me. I still can't get a clean shave on my chin to save my life though.

I always shave in the shower. I noticed that the blades lasted longer, and I got a smoother shave if I washed my face a couple times, letting the water soak and my pores to open up.

I have a Braun self cleaning electric, but I rarely use it. It does get my neck closer than a regular razor though. My face burns after using the electric, so I only use it when i'm feeling lazy

I've had great luck with my Braun, and now that it's almot ten years old I'm going to upgrade. You'll find that the $50.00 shavers shave just as well as the $300.00 shavers. When you buy the expensive ones, you're paying for the bells & whistles.

I'm in the same situation. It's usually at least 2-3 days in between shaves for me sometimes longer. My hair and face gets greasy/oily easily so I get best results right after I shower or after washing my face multiple times to clean it up. I used to use this $20 electric shaver forget the brand but it worked pretty good.

Yep, buy a shower mirror and shave IN the shower. Blades last 3-5 times as long and it's the smoothest possible shave one can get.

My experience with this stuff is that a guy that can give a high recommendation to any product probably has an easy beard to shave (even though he doesn't think he does).

For me, nothing works well. I still have to shave against the grain to make it look like I even did anything...and this is after having most of it lasered off!

Braun Activator is probably the best elect. shaver I've had. Although a good regular razor is best. My Braun Activator is just more convenient and does a good job.

I use the Mach 3 fusion with the fusion gel. Mostly because i shave my head, the best shave ever, i can shave in less time without the nicks and cuts. I buy mine from the swap meet, i get the eight packs for half the price that i would pay in stores

Is it because if the heat in the shower opening the pores?

Is it because if the heat in the shower opening the pores? That might be part of it but the warm water and soap softens your facial hair better than anything else.

Talk to Kaylore. He had a very good post about shaving about a year ago. I still think about it when I shave with my razor.

Crap I shave against the grain and have to shave twice a day to keep the stubble off and my face thank goodness is tough to handle eletric or blade. In fact if I go on vacation and don't shave for two days big foot sightings start to happen. I tend to use the gel foam or addias face cream and work it in to the skin and lather it up lots to get the hairs ready for shaving. I Personally use a Mach 3 razor.

If you’re having trouble shaving it could be you are still in puberty
You have “milk whiskers”. They are soft and won’t stand up.
In a few years when you become a man and grow real whiskers the problem will go away.

I've tried shaving w/ a electric razor and it doesn't work for me. I should shave every day but don't since shaving is way down on my priority list. But when I do shave and want to get it as close as possible, it take as hot as shower as I can, stick my stubbly face under the hot water, dry off and immdediately rub a foaming gel (any type of your choosing) on my face and shave first with the grain and then against the grain. It works for me but I know everyone is different. Thats why there are so many types of shaving, creams etc. You'll just have to experiment and see what works best for you. As for me, if I shave twice a week its enough. I hate shaving.

Yup, shower in the shower softens up the whiskers. I can get three to five shaves with one (WAY too expensive) blade. Any other mach 3 user pissed at paying $11 for four blades?

Just so you know, I use an old school straight razor. It's double-sided, cuts closer than any multipy-bladed deal, I use one blade a month and thirty cost me 15$

Here's the original thread I made about it:

Give it a try. Using a hot lather and letting your face soak before you shave can really help eliminate those red spots/bumps.

Try Shaving in the shower with baby oil. I think you will be very surprised.

If you plan on shaving other parts of your body I recommend a beard trimmer.

I use the Panasonic ES8077S Vortex after being a razor guy for years. I really like the Mach series, but the Panasonic works pretty well. If you switch from one to the other, make sure you give it a few weeks for your face to adjust.

I've tried a lot of different products looking for the best and easiest shave.
The Mach 3 Fusion is an outstanding razor.
I like the 'Art of Shaving' products a lot.....not cheap, but some of the best.
Try the oil, if nothing else, it's terrific. If you really want to go the whole hog,
check out the link to their site.
A Badger bristle brush, oil, shaving soap and aftershave balm.....with a Mach 3 fusion should be a good combo.
And as suggested by others, shave in the shower....or use a hot towel on your face before lathering up.

I was a Mach 3 man until I got a free sample of the Wilkinson Sword Quattro Titanium, which I think is branded as Schick over in the states.

It was so much closer than anything the Mach 3 ever did.

Although now I've got a Phillishave Coolskin electric one, and after a few days/weeks of getting adjusted to it, I can now use it and get a fairly close shave.

I came back from Uni one weekend and forgot my razor and had to use some bic disposable ones - every stroke felt like it was peeling a new layer of my face off. Agony.
