And the offspring would be 100% female. Hmmm, what would be the point for the existence of men any longer?

The prospect of all-female conception (http://news.independent.co.uk/world/science_technology/article2444462.ece)

Women might soon be able to produce sperm in a development that could allow lesbian couples to have their own biological daughters, according to a pioneering study published today.

Scientists are seeking ethical permission to produce synthetic sperm cells from a woman's bone marrow tissue after showing that it possible to produce rudimentary sperm cells from male bone-marrow tissue.

The researchers said they had already produced early sperm cells from bone-marrow tissue taken from men. They believe the findings show that it may be possible to restore fertility to men who cannot naturally produce their own sperm.

But the results also raise the prospect of being able to take bone-marrow tissue from women and coaxing the stem cells within the female tissue to develop into sperm cells, said Professor Karim Nayernia of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Creating sperm from women would mean they would only be able to produce daughters because the Y chromosome of male sperm would still be needed to produce sons. The latest research brings the prospect of female-only conception a step closer.

"Theoretically is it possible," Professor Nayernia said. "The problem is whether the sperm cells are functional or not. I don't think there is an ethical barrier, so long as it's safe. We are in the process of applying for ethical approval. We are preparing now to apply to use the existing bone marrow stem cell bank here in Newcastle. We need permission from the patient who supplied the bone marrow, the ethics committee and the hospital itself."

If sperm cells can be developed from female bone-marrow tissue they will be matured in the laboratory and tested for their ability to penetrate the outer "shell" of a hamster's egg - a standard fertility test for sperm.

I wonder how much of our tax money is being wasted on this project.

Yeah it's the Off Season - i'm with beerslug on this one....

Anyway - this is cool - but very scary in a way - and not the "no use for men" kinda of thing. (There will always be a market for hetero relationships)....but just very wierd....

Probably less than the $4 billion that the Army spent just on recruiting commercials last year.

That means some other mod or Taco let you take the fall for it.

I was under the impression that an automatic PM would be sent when a thread was moved. I am no a big move it around person. If I had my way there would be one forum and let the chips fall where they may.

Like every poster on the forum, a mod can use "invisible" mode... so making the assumption that a visible one made any move at any given time leaves one with huge odds of being incorrect. Just as an example, I'm currently using invisible mode... and other mods very well may be as well. I wasn't the mod who moved the thread, but I don't necessarily disagree with the decision to move it, either. It's long-established OM policy that even in the offseason, only a few (maximum of 5, if memory serves me correctly) political threads will be allowed to remain on the main board. And today, important Broncos news was announced...

This thread and others were moved in favor of keeping the Imus, Genes make me fat, Should Hotrod be a trained monkey?, Whitlock on the Imus Situation, Attorneys: No DNA Match in Duke Scandal, Are you a first born, middle child, or last born?, why white people shouldnt listen to rap, etc...

So I'm not buying any kind of farce that this thread was political and that's the reason it was moved.

And there was no important news happening early this morning but what would that have to do with anything?

I'd imagine that when the mod who did move the threads sees that the move was controversial, they'll probably offer an explanation. In the grand scheme of things, however, it's really not earth-shatteringly important, is it? The threads are still accessible; one just has to look on a subforum for them. As far as I'm concerned, Imus discussions should go in a subforum and the birth order one definitely belongs in Off Topics... but they'll slide off Page One in short order so oh, well...
