This story was going around a couple years ago.


The U.S. Department of Energy’s report, “Strategic Significance of America’s Oil Shale Resource,” is catalogued at www.evworld.com/library/Oil_Shale_Stategic_Significant.pdf The report was issued by the Office of Naval Petroleum and Oil Shale Reserves, which has been touting oil shale for nearly a century. Since no nation (http://a-steep-hill.livejournal.com/62853.html) has ever produced more than 16,000 barrels per day, it is absurd to contend, as this report does, that the U.S. will soon be producing 1,000,000 barrels per day. Of course, anything is possible on paper.

I've been in the oil shale mines near Parachute Colorado while working on the Union 76 shale to oil "cookers". Exxon had plans for a huge "cooker" and refining process back in the early to mid eighties in this area but mothballed the construction saying it was'nt cost effective with the current oil per barrel prices.

It is absolutely beautiful country back in the canyon passing the Union 76 refinery and driving up to the property gates that lead you further up the side of the mountain to the Union 76 pilot plant ("cooker"). The Exxon gates are (or used to be) near the Union 76 entrance.

Small world! The Boilermakers sent guys up there for awhile although I never worked in Parachute I was working in Cameo (power plant down the highway towards Grand Junction on the river) while some of that work was happening.

I worked maintenance shutdowns on both the Union 76 shale oil refinery and the shale oil "cooker" on the mountain. Almost bought a home in the Parachute area. I know the power house you are talking about. I spent alot of time in Grand Junction.
