</td></tr></tbody></table><!-- T10119161 --><!-- Sesame Modified: 04/10/2007 13:06:24 --><!-- sversion: 2 $Updated: alanh$ --> (April 10, 2007) -- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has informed Adam Jones of the Tennessee Titans and Chris Henry of the Cincinnati Bengals that they have been suspended without pay for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy and engaging in conduct detrimental to the league on numerous occasions, the NFL announced today.
Jones was suspended for the 2007 season, while Henry was suspended for the first eight games of the 2007 regular season. Each player must earn the right to be reinstated.
“We must protect the integrity of the NFL,” Commissioner Goodell said. “The highest standards of conduct must be met by everyone in the NFL because it is a privilege to represent the NFL, not a right. These players, and all members of our league, have to make the right choices and decisions in their conduct on a consistent basis.”
In a letter to each player, Commissioner Goodell wrote: “Your conduct has brought embarrassment and ridicule upon yourself, your club, and the NFL, and has damaged the reputation of players throughout the league. You have put in jeopardy an otherwise promising NFL career, and have risked both your own safety and the safety of others through your off-field actions. In each of these respects, you have engaged in conduct detrimental to the NFL and failed to live up to the standards expected of NFL players. Taken as a whole, this conduct warrants significant sanction.”
Jones will be strictly monitored by the Titans and the NFL during the suspension as part of his opportunity to earn reinstatement through adherence to a set of conditions. His status will be reviewed after the Titans’ 10th regular-season game to determine the extent to which he has complied with the conditions and whether the suspension should be affected by the disposition of any pending or prospective charges.
The specific conditions that apply to Jones’ suspension include the following:
He must have no further adverse involvement with law enforcement. He must fully cooperate with all required counseling, education, and treatment assigned under league or court-ordered programs. He must adhere to the restrictions on his activities that have been agreed to by he and the Titans. He may not be at the Titans’ facility through May 31 and may not participate in any practices or organized workouts during the term of the suspension. Beginning June 1, he must visit the team facility once each week to meet with the team’s player development director. Also, beginning June 1, he is permitted to spend one day a week at the team facility for conditioning, film study, and other similar activities. In conjunction with the team’s player development director and other professionals working with him, Jones must develop with the Titans a structured program of community service or other activity. This program must be submitted to the league office for review and approval.
Henry will be reinstated after the Bengals’ eighth regular-season game if he meets certain conditions during his suspension that will be monitored closely by the Bengals and the NFL. Those conditions include the following:
He must have no further adverse involvement with law enforcement. He must fully cooperate with all required counseling, education, and treatment assigned to him under league programs. He is eligible to be at the Bengals’ facilities during the rest of the offseason for customary activities and he must meet weekly with the team’s player development director. If he fully complies with all other conditions, he may participate in the Bengals’ training camp and preseason games. During the regular season, he is permitted to be at the Bengals’ facility for team meetings and must meet weekly with the team’s player development director, but he may not attend or participate in practice. He must fully comply with all conditions imposed on him by any court, including requirements of community service.
Jones and Henry were told that any failure to comply with these conditions will result in additional discipline, including possible banishment from the league.
“I must emphasize to you that this is your last opportunity to salvage your NFL career,” Commissioner Goodell wrote to Jones and Henry. “I urge you to take full advantage of the resources available to support you in that effort.”

His implications alone in all of those scenarios are enough to warrant this punishment.

If he had cooperated with the police on the shooter when he "made it rain", it might of been a lesser punishment.
Don't forget, he had ties to a multi-million dollar drug bust and was "robbed" for 200k supposedly, soon after.
Maybe now he will wipe that smirk off his mug.

I love it. Pacman may not have pulled the trigger but he is the one responsible for it. For those that think it is to hard if you did the same thing and it made headlines from cost to coast do you realy think he (the owner of where you work) would want your face at his business. Absolutly not. Fair or not people associate the business with those working there and if you are seen as a thug that beats women and inspires a shooting well lets just say you could loose a bit of business.

It is a privilege to make millions of dollars playing a game and enjoying the fame that comes with that.
Its not a right - its a privilege. And one that should be easily taken away with far less crap than Jones has produced.
I am glad Goodell dropped the hammer with a full season suspension.
IMO Jones should be banned for life.
Talent? So what - there are thousands of young men eager to take Jones spot in the NFL.
Its a dream job
Players at very minimum should stay out of trouble - if they cant - they simply don't deserve the opportunity to earn more money than 20 people would over their lifetimes.
Not convicted? Again - so what? I dont think my employer would care about that technicality if I had been in trouble with the law 10 times in just over 2 years. Thats plenty to show a pattern - enoughs enough.

Like Goodell said, it's not a right to play in the NFL. It's a privilege. Every contract in the NFL has that "conduct detrimental to the image of the NFL" clause in it. He wouldn't have a leg to stand on. I doubt that any court would even entertain the case beyond briefs.

It is good that the NFL cleans up its image. Between the arrests, the 'roids, and the rampant drug use among its players (even star players), they really do have a problem.
The NFL poster boy for bad behavior (Micheal Irvin) is now a TV personality for the NFL's biggest marketing partner (ESPiN).
As of today, the NFL looks like a country club for affluent partiers with little concern as to whether or not they get themselves into legal trouble. When you think of role models, you dont think of arrogant, lush, lascivious, crooked, inhumane, drug pushers with no regard for the youth that iconize them.
Luckily they have a fanbase that would rather be entertained than to provide decent boundaries for the children that they raise. Otherwise, the NFL would spiral down the toilet pretty quickly.

I thought he would give 8 games till a formal felony indictment was announced.
I'm sick of this tight lipped BS from these punks like Ray Ray and Pacman and Dwill's killer.
Don't worry about Brandon Marshall, it's totally different. There are conflicting things all over the place on that affair. I'm not going to elaborate other than it's pretty damn easy to call 911 in a fit.
The Titan GM was doing damage control a couple weeks ago that he did due dilligence, but didn't know Pacman had been arrested twice in college.
Here is the reality. Someone can get by with crap multiple times without getting heat. A drunken driver might drive 500 times over the limit before he or she gets busted. I absolutely don't drive after drinking. And never go to bars anymore. If I do, it's one or two beers.
It's not that you can't function after 4 in a couple hours, it's that the man is out there watching, especially at closing time.

Due process nothing...this isn't a court of law..while I would imagine it will get reduced through the union....the NFL can basically do what it wants to protect it's image. Jones doesn't have a right to a job with them.
One of the things I laughed about when Artest assaulted the guy in the stands was after Stern suspended him for the rest of the season....some reporter asked him if there was a vote and what was the results...he said "yeah...1 to nothing." LMAO

I was laughing at the TV because they had Deion on the show and he was predictably furious. Then he says "I was talking to Ray Lewis and he couldn't believe the suspension and thinks it's not right."
Yeah I bet, Ray-Ray.Hilarious!

Chris Henry got 8 games. Tank was looking at 4 games as of last month but I have not heard anything.

Yeah, Henry got 1/2 of the regular season. Plus he has to earn the right ot be reinstated. Same conditions as Pacman. That is going to hurt the Bengals next season. I wonder if he can only be at the facility one day a week, whether he will have the discipline to come in at mid season in any kind of shape to play?

Check that. I see Henry can go to training camp and play in pre-season games?
But he cannot participate in practices for the next 8 games.

“I must emphasize to you that this is your last opportunity to salvage your NFL career,” Commissioner Goodell wrote to Jones and Henry. “I urge you to take full advantage of the resources available to support you in that effort.”

</td></tr></tbody></table>“We appreciate the Commissioner’s thoughtful decision today and the discipline plan imposed on Adam Jones. We respect this decision and are confident this is in the best interest of the League and the team. We are hopeful that it will achieve the goals of disciplining the player and eventually enabling him to return to the field of play. Our goals for Jones are consistent with the League’s in that regard.
We are one team among 32 in a league that has collectively bargained with its players on a number of issues. One of those issues is discipline and the Commissioner has far greater discretion and power in matters of discipline than individual clubs. This level of corrective action is simply not available to the team, and we made the conscious decision to defer to the Commissioner’s action with respect to the League’s Conduct Policy. We also believe that any suspension by the Commissioner has ramifications to the player’s contract status and can be dealt with by the team in due course.
Unfortunately this decision does not end our deliberations about this player for our team. We will need assurances from the player on a number of issues before we are comfortable having him return to the team. Until we see a change in behavior through his actions and until he shows the ability to avoid controversy off the field, we will move forward with the possibility that he may not return to this team.
We feel that the future for Jones rests with him, his ability to meet the standards required by the League and the team, and his effort to earn back trust from the organization, teammates, the NFL and the fans. Only if he meets these guidelines will he be allowed to return to the team.”

I can't believe I finally agree with you on something.
A year might be a long time but tell that to the guy who is in a wheel chair for life, shot by a thug who was ordered to do so by Pac. Several witnesses have claimed Pac gave the order, it doesn't matter if he pulled the trigger or not. He was trying to be a hot shot, now he gets to sit for a year with his thugs and play video games. Oh, how sad. Dude is still a millionaire thug.

"It is a privilege to represent the NFL, not a right," Goodell said. "These players and all members of our league have to make the right choices and decisions in their conduct on a consistent basis."
:notworthy I really like this commish. I don't think its too harsh at all. Afterall, those guys on "To Catch A Predator" are usually fired immediatly from their jobs and nobody whines about due process with them because their employers do not like their behavior. This is the same thing, if you want to get paid you need to play. Being a thug = No Pay in the NFL :notworthy

This comish is not messing around. He's like the cleaning man no one wants to see unless you are squeeky clean. There are going to be a lot more suspensions coming down the pike. Players better ask themselves what's more important. Being a baller and partying all over town right now. Or putting that on hold for 10 yrs, making 50 million dollars, then retire and be as bad as you wanna be. Or maybe they just need to leave the country to have a good time. Go somewhere that maybe will cater to you and protect you a little. You know somewhere like Bahamas where nothing bad happens to celebrites. :)

There is some language that Pacman may be review after 10 games. Per ESPN. And pending his legal issues.
Who would pick this bootlip up even when he comes back knowing one throwdown and he's banished . What will happen to Tank when he gets outta the pokey?? Goodell is tougher than Ric Flair when he ran WCW.:strong:

Professional scumbags like Ray Lewis, Michael Irvin And Deion Sanders notwithstanding, the majority of NFL players are not going to have a problem with this ruling. The silent majority of them are sick and tired of pieces of **** like Pacman making them all look bad.
I'm sorry Goodall wasn't in office when Ray Lewis and his posse were slaughtering people in the street. The empty suit Fagliabue didn't suspend Lewis for a day.
