They had us taking Joe Staley and Victor Abiamiri in the first and second.

I know DE is a huge priority, but how would everyone feel if we took Staley at #1?

I would feel like killing everybody in the general vicinity. He's a project who has some physical gifts, but they're canceled out by his physical shortcomings. He's got a skinny butt. He didn't face top competition every week. Based on his performance at the Senior Bowl, I have to conclude he's a bit more stupid than you would prefer in an offensive lineman. I guess I could live with him @ 56, but I would be livid if we totally reached for him @ 21.

Allen Barbre has similar physical tools and should be available in the middle rounds of the draft. Both will need time to develop, why not just wait for Barbre?

Considering he's getting mentioned as a top-10 pick, it's really not a reach at all, but I'm still not a fan. If we go OT in round 1, I want a little surer bet than Staley.

I haven't seen Joe Staley mentioned as a top ten pick on anything...

Would hate that move in the 1st.

There's a couple of mocks linked to this site with Staley going #10 (I'm too lazy to look them up) and I've seen him mentioned on a couple of other sites as an outside possibility for Houston or Atlanta. I'm not saying that's my opinion (I think he's a 2nd rounder), but I've read it multiple places.

I've seen a lot saying that Staley is fighting Levi Brown for the second tackle taken, and that isn't based on Levi Brown falling. Staley moves exceptionally well for a fat fella' and he's risen a lot. Whether he truly merits it on his football impact isn't being talked about as much as his 40 times.

You do know that Norv Torner installed and called four fire blitz protection packages in that game and Staley was supposed to allow the RB to slide weakside to pickup the DE. SOB was asked to see how the RB's would protect the QB's and made Jay Moore look five times better than he is by being lined up over the OT who slid inside.

Despite that, Staley was just average in drills, but he was just as good as any other OL there including Levi Brown for the most part. Plus, he handled Crowder with ease all week during practice.

You do believe every bull**** story some kid's agent throws out there, too. How about backing up your hearsay with a link this time?

I guess the times Moore just kicked Staley's ass straight up were Norv's fault as well.

He handled a third round DE in practice. Well, I'm convinced he's worth a top 20 pick.

Slap, I watched them install that on Tues. Stupidest thing I ever saw a Staff do at an all star game, but Turner sat right there and did it. There are NO blitzes and they were installing blitz protections that required the RB's to take the DE's straight up. Stupid. I have a feeling that scouts wanted to see the RB's on the south Pass pro and Norv just put in some stupid ****.

BTW, the reference to Staley blocking Crowder is a shot at Crowder, not the ability of Staley. I am not Sold on ANY of the OT's in this draft including Joe Thomas and Levi Brown. I personally would not pick any of them in the first, but hey I am no OL guru, that's Kaylore ;D

I am not sold on Crowder with the pads on, and he was blocked easily by a developmental OT all week and got his as kicked in the game by even more developmental OT's.

No on Staley at #1 but I'm good with Abiamiri at #2.

Did Norv notice the RBs never even engaged Moore when we came storming in on Palmer like a runaway gravel truck?

I also recall Moore doing well against Staley on the occasions where there there weren't scheme issues. Two of Moore's sacks were gifts, but he just flat beat Staley on the other one.

See, this is a situation where I don't hate the player, because Staley does have rare movement skills for an OT, but I hate the hype. Being able to locate and bury guys at the second level is nice, but that shouldn't be the best part of your game. Its far more important what you can do against the man in front of you. Based on that criteria, I can't see any way Staley carries a first round grade. Not unless people are simply placing a premium on him because he's a left tackle.
