Champ not chafed by Clements' deal
By Mike Klis
Denver Post Staff Writer

Way more than usual, Champ Bailey heard from friends and teammates the past month.

They wanted to know if he was upset about the new contract cornerback Nate Clements received through the power of free agency from the San Francisco 49ers. How could Clements get an eight-year, $80 million deal when Bailey, the undisputed top cornerback in the NFL, isn't yet halfway through his seven-year, $63 million deal with the Broncos?

That's the problem with friends. They have a way of inadvertently agitating more than pacifying.

"How I respond to that is, 'OK, I know he's not as good a corner as I am,' and I think anybody in this league would tell you that," Bailey said Thursday following his offseason workout at the team's Dove Valley headquarters. "But, I need to find out the terms of his deal because there is some question about that. I don't think he should be getting paid more than me, but at the same time, the salary cap is a lot higher than it was three years ago. So it's not the same situation.

"I'm glad he got it, though. It's going to help the rest of us."

Upon closer inspection of Clements' contract, some financial experts would say Bailey remains the league's highest-paid defensive player. Bailey's $9 million average salary represented 11.1 percent of the league's $80.58 million salary cap in 2004, when he signed his new deal. Clements' $10 million average is 9.2 percent of the current $109 million cap.

There is also what the football industry is calling a "phony" final year of nearly $16 million in Clements' contract. Those dollars and that year would automatically evaporate should he collect a $10 million roster bonus, as expected, following the 2008 season. Not collecting that roster bonus would mean termination of the contract, so, at best, Clements' deal is for seven years and $64 million.

Still, when Clements, who had 23 interceptions for 341 return yards and no playoff games in his six NFL seasons in Buffalo, has a $1 million richer contract than Bailey, who in just the past two seasons has 19 interceptions for 401 return yards, eyebrows raise, mouths gape and cellphone minutes whir.

Will Bailey be asking the Broncos for a new contract?

"I'm not that type of guy," Bailey said. "I know the time and place to do that. We weren't really worried about it, but then I've had so many phone calls about the Clements' deal that you couldn't help but be interested in it."

As a general rule, teams revisit contracts with top players after the fourth year, so don't be surprised if the Broncos and Bailey discuss a new deal after this season - when the salary cap will climb to an estimated $116 million.

Check back in eight years

Veteran receiver Brandon Stokley met the local press Thursday for the first time since he signed his one-year contract with the Broncos. Stokley is impressed with Broncos second-year quarterback Jay Cutler, who passed for 1,001 yards in five games last season, but isn't about to measure Cutler's talent next to that of his former quarterback, Indianapolis' Peyton Manning, who has 37,586 passing yards in nine seasons.

"I believe Peyton is the best quarterback to ever play the game," Stokley said. "So to compare someone to Peyton isn't fair to everybody else, in my standards, anyway."

Bailey had what like 6 red zone ints?

I keep saying this but we have to get this guy a ring. He deserves it. I've always believed the true test of any player isn't when things are going great, the players around you are executing and the other side of the ball is taking care of business.

It's when you have to play injured (like he did for all of 2005 with a dislocated shoulder/hammy), when there's no pass rush and when teams are gameplanning against you to throw the ball away from you, not to mention the wussies at the league competition committee who made it harder and harder for CBs to play hard ball.

Champ Bailey with a pass rush would be death to QBs.

It would be absurd to redo his contract. He's making elite coin.

On the contrary,it would be stupid not to redo his deal in the next 18 months!

I don't ever see Champ pulling one of these holdouts or whatever but the bottom line is he is the best at his position and the Broncos would be better off re-working his deal next year.... IMHO. He put his best foot forward this year to save the team 3 million in cap room and it would be crazy to even let him entertain talks with other teams knowing what Nate "freaking" Clements just booked. It should be a top priority in the offseason (next year) to get Champ a new deal.

don't worry, Champ is going to get his ($$$)...he knows it, he's just not going to be a distraction...the front office will redo his contract at some point....

in regards to Stokely's comments, he's right on some accounts, Peyton is the best right now....Stokely could actually be an asset, provided he's healthy....dumb question though, what's the difference between Stokely and Kircus?

Experience. Nothing like experience, mental confidence, and awareness.

I would take Champs deal a few years ago over Clements deal this year. An extra three years of earning interest will turn into huge gains down the road.

just for fun lets say that Champ got all 63 million 3 years ago and and invested the entire thing at 9% for 15 years or until the year 2019.
It looks like that would come out to about $229,474,500. Now lets say Nate gets all 80 Million this year and invests the entire thing until the year 2019 at the same rate. That comes out to $225,016,000. 4 million less than Champ. .

Someone needs to inform Stokely that when your in Denver, there is no question who the best QB to ever play the game is and he doesn't have an overly large forehead.

Maybe this isn't homerish enough but I still think the best ever was Joe Montana.

rly this can turn into a HUGE debate about talent and rings and whole bunch of other junk....basically you could say either Elway or Montana was the best and you couldn't go wrong.

Actually you have almost 2000 posts in 15 months not 27. AND you post "(4.37 posts per day)" I got this from your profile. I dont have anything against you or anything but I just could not help but put out these true facts.

There is no reason to redo his contract. He's making serious coin and Bly is the almost perfect compliment. They allready know each other and both have Washington ties.

Don't underestimate the need to keep your players happy. If Champ wants a raise, give the guy a raise. He deserves it.
