View Full Version : Sanjaya Sanjaya They call the Wind Sanjaya
India is keeping Sanjaya in American Idol.
In spite of denial race is a factor.
It don’t mater that American Idol is broadcast a day late in India.
I am an old redneck who can get on the Internet and look at the sun coming up In India.
The Indian kids who were born with the Internet can program their computers
To vote weeks ahead of the show. I am old and dumb, I can do it.
If Sanjaya was a member of the Orangemane can you imagine the votes he would get?
We take care of our own.
I am voting for Sanjaya next week if for no other reason to prove a point and piss Simon off. I don’t even have to watch the show, at 8:56 pm my computer will start voting for Sanjaya.

He is horrible. Between Howard Stern, votefortheworst.com, and 11 year old little girls he isn't going anywhere. I wonder what the Hell American Idol is going to do if he gets closer and closer. He tried to pull off the Fro-hawk and I wanted to reach through the TV and choke his little ass for disgracing DWill.

BINGO. As bad as Sanjaya is (and he is bad), he's publicity for the show. There's no chance in hell he'll win, but the producers will do what it takes to keep him on the show as long as possible. The stylists come up with a new look for him every week.

That's my take on it....it's a form of backlash, pure and simple.
If he wins....and it's a very real possibility given the support and the ideal behind it, then American Idol should just fold up it's tent and cancel itself. The reason? The public would've sabotaged the show's very premise by voting for the very worst performer they could. For a show based upon the supposed idea of finding the most talented person in a field of canadates, a Sanjaya victory couldn't be seen as anything other than the kiss of death....a blow against the Empire and , as you said Dukes, just a flat out mockery of a show that now has a bloated air of arrogance and self-importance to it.

What I am saying is that American Idol voting system is flawed. Computers can be programmed to vote as soon as a line is open. I am adding a line to my program to count the number of times I vote for Sanjaya.
What ever the outcome it won’t cost lives like our flawed voting system that elected George Bush …the winner with fewer votes.

I think its typical human/misery loves company cynicism. First of all, no one is forcing a gun to your head to watch American Idol. So people who are voting for him just to ruin it for everyone else are incredibly lame. It's really making a mockery of the show and thats why its currently jumping the shark. No one on American Idol deserves anything so anything that happens to them is pure entertainment only. It's a sham that promotes everything that is wrong with the music biz. Singers that dont write on songs. Singers chosen for reasons other then musical ability. Cookie Cutter producing that has us listening to the the same ole pop music on the radio every day. The list really could go on and on.

While this is all true to a point, you both fail to realize that the more this guy wins, the more the show's premise and credibility is damaged....the industry as a whole will not look favorably upon it and all post Sanjaya contestants/winners will possibily suffer for it as a result in the form of limited oppertunities. That's why I think they should just pull the plug on it if he wins and wait for things to cool out before trotting out the Star Search/talent show concept again....at least in any form that gives the public a electronic say in it's results.

If you guys actually believe that Simon and the other producers are upset that Sanjaya is still around, I have a bridge for sale. He is the ONLY one that the average household can name. No one else stands out for their marketability (only two or three stand out for their vocals). This happens every year, and every year the person that Vote For The Worst and others pimp falls out around the five spot (look at that Kelly girl last year). Idol LOVES this publicity. By the time Sanjaya is voted out (and he will lose around five like all of the other VFTW candidates), someone will have probably stepped up into the marketability area (like the dude that thinks he's Justin Timberlake).
EDIT -- also some of you take this show WAYYYY too seriously. If you're really that upset that someone wins a stupid talent show, or consider this "ruining the music industry", you need help. Mainstream pop has NEVER been the place for talent. But hey, if nothing else it makes it entertaining to read the "back in my day, music was legit" lecture that always comes out.

Well, I'm sorry, but it rubs me the wrong way. In the 70s and 80s, pop stars were created much more legitimately: record companies sent sleazy scumbags around to every radio station and they bribed the station programmers with coke and broads to play that record companies hottest property.

Several random thoughts:
1. I want to have my way with Haley Scarnato!! Of course I'm old enough to be her Dad, but does that make me a bad person?? She would look great in orange. If someone photoshopped a picture of Haley in a Broncos tee top and orange short shorts, my name would turn to Watermock.
2. I think Simon hates the white broads. Every season, he is so much more kind to the black girls than the white girls.
3. I think that Melissa Doolittle is great, and Phillipi Sparks daughter is pretty good, but I think Lakisha sucks. I know she has a great Aretha voice, but I don't want an Aretha voice when I hear someone cover Donna Summer. I hate that over boisterous fat diva voice, that everyone seems to jerk off to. I never change the channel faster than when I see Aretha Franklin on my TV. All of that howling and screaming makes me cringe.
Lakisha has the same effect on me.

American Idol loves Sanjaya. They love votefortheworst, Stern, etc talking about American Idol. You think they care about the credibility of the winner? It's ratings, which means ad $$$$. Controversy=ratings. Which is also why Ryan and Simon have their little lover spats and why they have the judges there in the first place (Simon in particular).
Sure there is a side bonus if one of the top contestants makes good music and sells CDs, but (here is the key) the winner doesn't have to be the successful one for them to have "credibility." Yeah it's nice for them to have Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson as Idol winners, but Jennifer Hudson, Kellie Pickler, Chris Daughtry, and Clay Aiken are all successful without winning. The money is made in the TV show, not all the extraneous stuff (which includes the post-Idol music careers). Yeah it's a nice chunk of change, but it is secondary.

I totally agree. I don't think the show's producers even get too freaked out by Paula's incraesingly bizzare behavior. I'm sure part of the reason some people (besides me) tuned in earlier this year was to see if she would show up goofed on something.

I think the suggestion that they should fear endeavors like this is that should the "haters" create a "worst" winner it could well drive away serious fans who don't feel like their votes count and that they'll be watching inferior people the rest of the season.
Its legitimate reasoning, it gets huge publicity for them now, but should it fall in favor of the haters then the very concept of the show is invalidated. That will hurt their product in the long term. Fox is probably hoping this can be an "American Bandstand" type of thing with a decades long run, but that won't happen if haters succeed in sabotaging the voting process.
Personally I've never watched the show, not my thing, but its just sound business sense. Any PR is good for the short term, but bad PR catches up to you in the long term.

Sanjaya won't win. I do watch the show and this week he didn't get the most votes. At best he was 4th, at worst, 6th. They divided the 9 remaining contestants into thirds (top, middle, bottom vote getters). Sanjaya was in the middle group. There is usually one pretty bad contestant every year (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Savol) that goes much farther than they should, but they end up going in the middle weeks.
There might be a small number of people who votefortheworst, but this show also has a ton of loyal fans as well, much more than the 'haters'.

Idol is that wierd think you can't hate to love. If not for the show, alot of good and talented singers may not have been discovered. But then, somebody good is discovered, like Chris Daughty, and they have him singing top 40 ballad rock crap, when everybody knows he likes the heavier stuff. It doesn't matter what Sanjay does, just like William Hung. He was a fad until it wasn't fun anymore and then he was nobody again. The talented ones always find their way and end up staying the course, making albums long after their season was over on the show.
But, I will admit, I have not watched it in two weeks and I won't again until crapboy is cut. It goes to show you, even though you got pipes and can sing like a bird, MOST times, if you're ugly or fat, say bye bye. It's your looks that get you to be noticed and becoming famous.

I couldn't of said it better myself! Sanjaya sucks, plain and simple. They have let some talented singers go because of Sanjaya. But I know that some of those singers will be picked up somewhere. A lot of American Idol castoffs are more popular than the winners were. Clay Aiken was an American Idol castoff and he is way more popular than Fantasia or Ruben Studdard. Same with Josh Gracin or Chris Daughtry.

Isn't Ruben like selling shoes or something now? If not, then he should be.

Idol ratings were incredible before Sanjaya and certainly havent risen because of him. if he were gone, i seriously doubt they'd drop (there is nothing to suggest they would). They don't love it and they dont need it.
I agree. The popularity of that show isn't hinging on one 17 year old kid who has at best, extremely marginal talent. They don't need the ratings. They have them. What Simon doesn't want is to have market the kid with a record contract.
Thing is the worst for first will have to grow votes exponentially as others get voted off. Those votes will then be cast towards another talent. That's why the worst can usually get someone to about the top 5 but no further. Unless everyone who had voted for the rocker chick (yes, apparently there were people voting for her) suddenly start dialing in for Sangina, which is doubtful, because those voters are obviously fans of the show.

Just curious as to how you and the country of India do this? I understand the programming but how do you know what number to affix "weeks in advance"? They go in a different order every week so how are people getting the lineup?
If its a completely random assignment of the number, there isnt a way. However if they have some algorithym to assign the numbers, then its possible, though unlikely.
I dont think they need to "cheat" as there are 1.1 billion or so Indians compared to a mere 300 million Americans. I am by no means a math major but 3 times as many Indians as American's puts the odds of Sanjaya staying greatly in his favor.
As for "race" not being an issue. That's absurd. Everyone votes for their own countrymen in competition. Americans do, Russians do, Chinese do, Europeans do with each of their small little state-sized countries, India is no different.
My program does have to have the number added before it will work.
At midnight it reverts to the default number 000000000.
That is in case I get too deep in my cups or find something interesting to do.
I just deleted the program. My mission was to help get Sanjaya on tour.
Simon was not happy. It don't take much to amuse me.

Actually, the theory of all the enmasse calling from India has already been debunked but people still hold on to it. Look at the numbers you just posted. Why wouldn't he be the top voter every week? He's not. And if everyone votes for their own countryman in competitions then Americans should be voting for Sangina, regardless of his name, he is an American kid. -- Which they are. Does anyone over the age of 14 actually watch that show?
The show has always been a joke. Now the joke is just more self-referential--postmodern irony to the max. I think it fits perfectly.

Haley needs to go. It's just painful watching her. I don't understand people keeping her around because she's hot either. I mean, if we're keeping someone because they're hot, shouldn't they actually be...um, well, hot? I hate those people that constantly complain that superstars aren't hot over the internet, but I just don't get the Haley love. She has decent legs, and she's pretty, but I don't get why everyone is going ga-ga over her.
Unless Blake somehow steals the title, once again AI is going to have a hard time marketing their winner. The three great singers they have are all hard to really mass-produce.

I think the worst for first people have missed the boat. Haley is just God awful. And if seeing someone teeter around on spike heels like a four year old in mommy's shoes is hot to some guys, well, umm..... okay. Sanjaya isn't going to kill off American Idol. This whole pack of performers will. Either no one of any real caliber is trying out anymore or the producers finally made a bad calculation of what would give the show a different hook this season. The reason there aren't any memorable performances is because all these folks are pretty easy to forget.

You would think but apparently, not so:
Malakar is still on Idol, and Idol is still slipping, down five weeks in a row now when compared to its monster year-ago numbers. Last year's Top Nine performance show was watched by 28.8 million; Tuesday's Idol, featuring this year's Top Nine largely ignoring the advice of Tony Bennett, was watched by 26.7 million (first place). Last year's results show, expelling Mandisa, was watched by 26.2 million; Wednesday's Idol, not expelling Sanjaya, was watched by 26.1 million (second place).
While still number one in the ratings race the fun is fading. Despite how cynical and jaded we may have become, and how corny it will sound, I think generally Americans still want a fair game. -- And to know their votes count.
While being amused by the lengths people will go to who don't watch the show or care about the concept or outcome, I will admit that type of meddling lessens the appeal for me. For every parade someone wants to participate in there is someone who wants to rain on it...

Are the ratings down because of Sanjaya or because they ALL suck? I would venture to say it's the latter. My wife loves the show (and I like it, just not nearly as much as she does). We still are watching it this year, but even she is commenting of the lack of talent from everyone. I don't think they've had such a boring group ever, including the dreadful 3rd season.

Yeah, I agree with that, too. I don't know if the quality of people trying out has been eclipsed by the dumbasses just looking for their 15 minutes of foolishness, or if the producer's were trying for a different type of hook for the show, but whichever, it isn't working.
I don't know why they took the age up to 29 either. The only legitimate candidates for "pop" stars are Jordin and Sanjaya. It seems like they are now looking for Vegas lounge acts.

Here's the deal:
They don't need Sanjaya for ratings. The ratings of Idol can't go any higher than they have already been. It's having a negative effect because his presence is causing the show to be mocked. American Idol isn't just a show, its a cultural phoenomenon. You can't talk about turn of the century entertainment without it coming up. Because of its cultural significance and its effect on the business (its made countless dollars), the fact that it's becoming a bit of a joke (due to the Sanjaya thing) only hurts both the integrity of the show as well as it's influence. The show has created 2 platinum artists, an oscar winner, the fastest selling album of all time, and a slew of other successful albums/artists. It's a machine. The new backlash is a wrench in the mechanics and that has to be detrimental to the fate of the show.
Having said all that, even Rome fell. As with anything (aside from sports because of its ever changing culture, team allegence, and heroic nature) interest will wane. You can argue that there hasn't been a contestant with a better voice than Melinda, so i don't think its a question of the talent being bad (every year there are a bunch of clunkers in the top 12..you just arent remembering properly). I think the show is just simply running its course. Listen, yes, the ratings are going down, but the ratings are still incredible! Anytime any form of entertainment that isn't sports related gets saturated in the media, there is natural backlash...this is just the way humaity works, misery loves company.

The difference this year is that there are maybe 3 that are good and the rest are not very good at all. In years past it seemed that each singer had their week where they blew the rest away. This year it's continually those 3 while the rest have yet to blow anyone away and I doubt they will. I think people tune in but don't watch the whole show anymore because this crop is so bad. There's no real competition.

That's really not necessarily true...go through year by year and youll see its always been full of less than singers. It usually comes down to three or four. I think last year's poorer singers just had more personality (kellie pickler for example..well, she can only do country, bucky, paris). It's a combination of things, but a great deal has to do with natural progression of human interest and expectation, i honestly believe that

But that's just it. Melinda has a good voice but no personality. Her current nickname is Nana. She can relieve Celine in Vegas but she doesn't come close to being a pop star. And she has zero appeal. Every week is the same. Great vocals, but so what? It is starting to become apparent why in the professional ranks her niche was as a backup singer. And, sorry, but she knows she has a good voice, that golly, gosh, gee whiz, you think I sang good stunned surprise is getting old. She can't even think up new schtick for that part.
I think one of the things hurting the show is bumping the age to 29. Maybe having the younger kids was a pain in the butt but they had more personality and were more entertaining.
At least Haley is back to being a wedding singer. Which is her talent level, anyway.
This is just a bad crop. None of them are particularly interesting.
Did you watch Nashville Star this year?

It's more than simply "the talent is not there." Taylor Hicks is a crap singer with zero commercial appeal. Yes, the crop this year might not be as flashy as some years (Season 3 comes to mind as a blah year ...Fantasia's year), but it also has to do with fan expectation. I thought tonight's results show was a nice celebration of the show. I just think it peaked last season and will run down hill. The show is more than just about the contestants, always has been. And as we get closer and closer to the finish line, youll see the ratings go up a bit because, no matter what, we love to see a winner we can relate to.

It's going to get increasingly hard for Sanjaya to win this thing. The public is losing interest in the Sanjaya phenomenon and he's going to slip in calls. Plus, with each person getting knocked out, there are more and more votes going to legitimate candidates from a pretty large crowd of people who take this stuff seriously. These next three weeks are going to be really tough for him.
However, if Sanjaya somehow makes it past the top 5, all bets are off. That's where the public interest in him would catch a second wind... all bets are off at that point.

The Sanjaya phenomenon got me wondering if the producers will be forced to change the format of the show.
I'm aware of the internet/Howard Stern movement to keep Sanjaya on as long as possible. He is as entertaining as a train wreck, but America loves to watch a train wreck!
Anyway....if the format was changed such that people voted for the one they wanted OFF the show, then the people that love the show could concentrate their votes on ONE person. Then the people that wanted to protect Sanjaya would have to concentrate their votes on someone different each week.
Seems like a simple fix to me.

I'm so glad too. I was sick of him and the hype. Now the DJ on 95.7 the Party, Blaze, can come down off of the Elitch's tower where he and his intern are holed up until Sanjaya got the boot. Nice timing too.. it's windier than heck tonight.

I knew John Q Public didn't have a long enough attention span to keep up the Sanjaya vote. Or the ground swell to keep increasing the vote to keep pace.
And dude (?) WTF? Boys don't cry when they get the boot. Jeez. That poor kid really needs to figure out who he is and what he is. I doubt this experience helped much with that process.

when i quoted a stand up comic i would have thought most people would have seen i was just playing . "my bad" . but if you dont think watching SOME of the reality shows that are on "maybe not all" is a little low end on the iq scale well it kinda proves my point ... pls note i said not all ... and maybe even not idol if thats what floats your boat cool ... but as a person that used to write alot of music to perform, its like Sheryl Crow said something to the line of MOST of these people on idol are bubble gum ,mostly limited talent company made performers ... not artist ... not proven song writers ... ready made stars owned by the company ... yum you should see the contracts from idol ... they own you ... what songs you can put on the cd where you can promote , what shows you can be on . music with the company line ... good clean music ... with what we want you to hear ..
But if you dont think Fear factor .all the sex based reality shows like geek date shows ... wife swap shows . surreal life with mini me peeing in the living room "tho it was funny" . to insert whatever lame activity you want done by celebrities... dancing with the stars ... skating with the stars ...cooking with the stars ... celebrities trien to be cops ... celebrity boxing ... BUT yet no celebrity in the Wild ... i watch if we took 5 celebrities and dropped them in lets say ... Iran ... to make it fun lets go with ann coulter , michael more , Al sharpton , Rosie , and Imus ...
or maybe we take to catch a predator dateline nbc "which i support" and take it one step further ... to hunt a predator ... we take the parents of kids that have been hurt by this trash ... give the parents guns ... and the crooks handcuffs dump the preds in a open field and show it on pay per view ...
just seem to me like we will be watching "The Running Man" soon so lets get crazzy ...
but if you dont think some of the stuff they dump on us and they call it entertainment is somewhat low brow im sorry but we disagree
as far as me spelling prophet wrong ... sorry i didnt know we was being graded and i was a C.A.D. guy and worked with #'s ... everything i write is normally almost shorthand cuz i jot ideas and Fs up my spelling sometimes sorry ... and grumpy yes ... douchbag no get it right please

i ment stupid for watching it ... cuz if you give it ratings its all theyll make cuz theyll think its ok ... not stupid in full cuz i know not a one of you or anyone that watchs reality shows to make that call so pls i repeat ..

No sweat TD. And for the most part I agree with you. Reality shows aren't reality but they are cheap to produce and highly manipulative. For the most part when one of home teams isn't playing somewhere, on some network, I read.
Idol is corny but with the exception of this season there have been some talents. Country may not be your cup or tea but Carrie Underwood is a huge star. Kelly Clarkson is probably more talented than Britney Spears. Pop music really isn't know for anything but image. So no harm, no foul.
As I said before I've been around choir groups and singing for most of my life. So I just enjoy watching. There are worse things than media created pop stars.

Reality shows like American Idol aren't going anywhere any time soon. People enjoy watching real individuals placed in certain situations. It's one thing to watch an actor play a character. It's completely a different thing to watch this.

Right on Taco. I watch with my wife, Son and Daughter, and we have a great time.
Last night, my Son and Daughter had a sing off and dance off during the commercials breaks. We eat Ice Cream, and just have fun.
Both of my kids like music so it is great for the whole family.

I don't understand why American Idol is a bad thing. I've heard the argument that it's fluff and it's networks and record companies manipulating you, but really is it? Has it not produced talent? What's manipulating is someone like Britney Spears, who clearly cannot sing, and lip syncs at all her concerts? Why does Idol need to go away? What's wrong with seeing an everyday Joe/Jane become a superstar in four months time. Isn't this "the american dream?" I just don't get the American Idol is fluff argument at all.

There is nothing menacing about it. And I hardly think a marginally talented 17 year old kid is anything close to being an anti-Christ. One station broadcasts the show and subsequent results two consequetive nights so I'm not sure how you are being bombarded every other night.
And here I always thought needless drama was mainstream.

Oh I know. There are only about 5 programs between both commercial and "cable" television that I watch. My daughter got us started on Idol, otherwise I probably wouldn't have turned it on. But I enjoy it, so not a big deal for me.
I get that a lot of people actually like the whole "reality" venue. But I can't say I get why. My sister stayed with us for a couple months a while back and I was completely appalled by her television watching habits. Some people say if you just watch some of those shows you'll get hooked. But not true.
Besides, people have great "justification" processes. So I don't find a bunch of kids looking for a shortcut to stardom nearly as horrifying as a bunch of women competing for some dork to "marry".

Jordin got screwed last night. Bon Jovi night? That's death for her. I still think she wins just because she's the most "marketable". Best voice has to be Melinda. No reason to really discuss the guys, but I like Phil because you know he's just thrilled to be on this ride. LaKisha scares me. She's screaming most of the time.
I love the backing band. That's the whole reason I started watching the show. Some of the top musicians out there right now are in that band and they deliver EVERY night. Same thing with the "Rock Star" show that was on CBS. Although "Rock Star" also had Dave Navarro's unintentional comedy. Thank God Navarro now has a show on ManiaTV. (http://www.maniatv.com/)

I kind of liked Blake's performance, and this is coming from someone who grew up listening to Bon Jovi. When he actually sang the song as it was meant to be sung, he did very well. He made a seamless transition from his own version to the actual melody. I disagree that Jordin was doomed from the beginning. I think a song like "Runaway" would have been good for her. Jordin and Chris should go home tonight if I had my way. Of course, I don't...ROFL!

I kind of felt bad for her. She knew that she struggled with her song and Simon didn't make it any better by telling her that her hair reminded him of something you would see on the Addams Family.

They all agreed Rock was not her genre. Simon even knocked her "Morticia Adams" hair and clothes. She took it well and agreed with them that she didn't do very good with the song selection.
