View Full Version : Realistically - What can they get for Asante Samuel?
new-england-patriots messageboard What can they get for Asante Samuel?

I think that he's a hot enough commodity to get a 1st and 3rd from someone. Maybe this is a bit optimistic but I think we'll get at least a 1st rounder. If the trade offer is from someone with a high pick in a bad position, like the Skins it would take more I think because of the $$ demands of a slot like #6.
Snyder's been snubbed by the Bears in his suit for Briggs. Will he come a-courting for Samuel next? What do you think is the most we can get for him? Let's try to be somewhat realistic.

I wouldn't give up 1st round pick for a player who has only had one solid year.

If I were the Pats, Id look at Samuel and one of their firsts for the 6th overall. Throw in maybe a 4th too.

Unlike Branch, who was more of overrated receiver because of Brady, Samuel has the potential to be one of the elite cornerbacks in the NFL. Pioli is going to get him signed if he wants the Pats to compete next year because there's no cornerback right now in the draft that is going to be as realistically good as Samuel is in 2007.

They have an excellent front 7 as well. It's good enough that they were able to plug in a reciever and still be successful. Their corners don't have to be elite for their defense to be good. I don't think he's even worth a first.

No damn way I would give up a 1st rounder for him. I think he a good player, but to demand a 1st for him would be insane. This guy has had one good year!!:nono:

If they can get a 1st for Branch, they may get one for Samuel, too. I would think the Bly trade has hurt his value, though. Bly's a better corner and Denver certainly didn't give 1st round value for him.

I think a 2nd rounder would be a great deal for Samuel
As someone mentioned - 1 good year. But he does have upside so a 2nd rounder is reasonable IMO and NE should be happy to get it.
1st + 3rd? thats homer crack smoking talk there

LOL
Samuel is easily worth a 1st rounder to quite a few teams out there. There were only a handful of elite corners this year and he was definetely one of them. He's almost certainly going to be better than any CB in the draft for at least the next 3 years or so. He's definetely worth more than Branch was at the time, and NE got a 1st rounder for him.

I still can't get over how people value first round picks. Samuel is a proven CB that makes big plays and a very good player. Behind Champ I think he is one of the best and a proven commodity in the NFL. I'd take Samuel today (if I was on a team that needed a CB) over any position in the draft period. Who is to say Calvin Johnson, on down isn't going to be a bust in this league?? I'll take the proven guy any day of the week. I think Bly is a solid CB and a play maker but a notch down from Samuel, his real value is he will be playing opposite Champ and therefore should see a ton of action while covering #2 WRs week-in and week-out.

Yeah. He's too expensive. The offer the Patriots are offering Samuel right now is probably more than what the skins have to say nothing of what Asante actually wants.
Samuel has higher value because he's entering his prime. Bly is better, but he's not worth as much because he's 29 whereas Samuel is only 26.
The Patriots should just sign him for what he wants. Their secondary is pretty average and Harrison is pretty much done. Cornerback isn't the kind of position that you can just draft someone and expect them to upgrade your secondary immediately. It takes some growing into.
As for what he's worth, I think he's better than Deion Branch, so that says something. Though I wouldn't trade more than a high third for Branch. Really it depends on how desperate the team that wants him gets.

One can also argue that Samuel is a one year wonder.
10 picks and 65 tackles in 2006 is great!
2003-2005 avg 41 tackles and 2 ints per season....decidedly average
Will Samuel repeat 2006 like production? Possibly.
But over a 4 year career, 2006 could possibly be an anomaly as well.
That said - teams in dire need would likely be willing to pay a 1st. But that doesnt mean he is truly worth it.
1 good year, 3 average years = 2nd round pick is very fair IMO.

And after 6-7 good years in the league people will say he's over the hill and not worth the $$/pick. I think there are alot of teams that would give up a first rounder for him, but certainly not two firsts with the franchise tag around his neck. Patriots have played this game for a while now, I'm wondering when it will really come back to bite them.
