Sterilization as punishment? Mom offers 7-year-old daughter for sex

I wish I could say this was an April Fool's joke. So, here's a question (since polls seem to be all the rage :)): if the court had the option of sterilizing people like this, would you be for or against it?

The easy answer, based on an emotional response to something like this, is to sterilize the crazy bitch. But from a larger perspective, legalized sterilization carries some pretty heavy repercussions.

So, seriously - would you want a sterilization penalty for stuff like this?

TAYLOR, Michigan (AP) -- A 33-year-old woman was arraigned Sunday on charges alleging she offered to let an undercover investigator take pornographic photos of her 7-year-old daughter and have sex with the girl, authorities said.

The woman was arrested Friday after taking the girl to a hotel in Romulus, near Detroit Metropolitan Airport, where she had agreed to meet the investigator, the Wayne County sheriff's department said.

A not guilty plea was entered on behalf of the woman, who wasn't represented by a lawyer at the arraignment, department spokesman John Roach said. She was held in lieu of $1 million bail, and a preliminary examination was scheduled for April 12.

Authorities said the woman offered to let the investigator take the photos for a fee and, when she met with him, discussed being paid in exchange for sex with the child, the Detroit Free Press reported.

"This is truly a horrifying case," Sheriff Warren Evans said in a statement. "To think that a woman would offer up her own daughter in this way impossible to comprehend."

The girl and her four siblings, ages 12, 11, 9 and 6, all were in protective custody, Roach said.

The name of the woman, who lives in this Detroit suburb, wasn't being released to avoid identifying the child, the sheriff's department said.

She faced five charges, including child sexually abusive behavior, illegal use of the Internet for child sexually abusive actions or materials and distribution of child sexually abusive material, Roach said.

She also was charged with prostitution, since the department said she propositioned the investigator herself. The department said the woman advertised herself online as a prostitute.

If convicted, she could get up 20 years in prison.

A friend of mine thinks all people should be sterilized at birth and then you have to apply to be allowed to bear children. I obviously don't agree with such measures but I can definitely see . I do support the death penalty, though.

It's truly unbelievable to me. Once you have kids, and you realize how you would do ANYTHING to protect them from even the slightest harm - well, I guess I don't consider someone like this to be human.

And then you throw in the physical development of a seven-year-old girl. My son is eight, and we have neighborhood kids in that age range here all the time. I can't imagine physically what that would do to a kid that age - and the physical harm would be a drop in the proverbial bucket compared to the long-term mental damage.

I answered no to the poll question - I think that slope could become slippery pretty quickly. But I wouldn't be against what Garcia mentioned. If someone is capable of this, I don't see any possibility for rehabilitation. Some things are worse than murder.

I voted yes. I'm wondering why anyone would vote no. Especially with the views on abortion by some people here. My step daughter had 7 children and was a drug user. When she had only two kids we kept turning her in and they kept giving her chances. All of this while on welfare. Eventually they took them away from her but she would not agree to having them adopted out. She did nothing to improve her situation, continued using the drugs and even had another baby. Fortunately they took the baby away also and put it up for adoption. The other children are older now, all of the girls except one became pregnant and one had her first baby at 13. It's a vicious cycle and the system does not work.

I find it so disgusting that someone could do that to a child. That poor innocent child.. my heart breaks for her! I don't know about sterilizing, but she should rot in a jail cell for the rest of her life. Put her in General Population, see how long she lasts.

i think abusive drug addicts should have this option also. Less time in jail if they get there tubes tied. I heard about a private group that actually did this. Less drug babies on board and drug addicts (or maybe welfarers) got a free operation. We all benefit if this was more widespread.

In this case, I would opt for the "bigger is not always better" option and go with one about the diameter of 2 of my fingers. And I would need backups for the busted ones. Afterall, its not the size of your stick, its how you swing it.

I wonder if the mother pimped herself before she pimped her daughter? I am gonna make a guess about this women... I am gonna guess that the one thing she has learned, the one skill in life she has is pro-creation. She is a person of low self esteem, low education, and low economic means.

And, of course, when this case goes to court, the defense will bring this up - provided it goes to court instead of getting plead out for lesser charges. They will bring her children into the courthouse, and they will drape their arms around her neck - cuz thats what most kids do. And then her mother will come in and say something like I didnt raise her correctly, its my fault, her father used to beat us, etc. They will bring up her poverty - cuz everyone knows that only poor people commit crimes and if there was just more compassion and more $$$, she woulda never done a thing like this. And then for the coup-de-grace, the defense will parade a caravan of kittens and puppies thru the courtroom, the jury's hearts will melt, and they not only find the women innocent, but they will award her a nice sum of money so that she can go forth and sin no more.

Seriously, she will probably loose her kids. But dont look for a huge sentence here. Look for this women to be out on the street and having kids before she is 40.

I would say that sterilization is probably a good option. However, as castration for male rapists has already been struck down in the courts as cruel and unusual (my guess is that none of the Supreme's daughters has ever been ganged raped), dont expect that forced sterilization for people of this ilk will ever become a law.
