Before this year I had never gone to more than 1 or 2 womens basketball games. I'm now hooked on the Wyoming Cowgirls (something I thought I'd never say). We put 15,400 screaming Poke fans in the Dome of Doom today and absolutely crushed Wisconsin to be the WNIT Champs. There are only 2 seniors on the team and neither of them play much.

It's a lot of fun to watch fundamentally sound basketball. These girls set picks, pass the ball and shoot lights out.

If you have the chance next year, come on up to Laramie and watch the show.

I think I will pass. I'm not a big fan of women's roundball.

Uh, good job, I'd be more excited about next years men's bball team all JR's and Sophmores this year. They'll be good next year!

Congrats to the ladies - maybe next year they'll make the real tourney!

The Women's NIT? Congrats to Wyoming, but wow, that's scraping the bottom of the barrell as far as an accomplishment. I hate that ESPN shoves women's basketball down our throats from January to March.

From my experiences watching basketball the women generally play better fundamentally (I mean at programs that actually try to field a decent team, not some pickup league or something) and they are also meaner. As far as they're concerned it's their ball and you can either rip their face off and take it or get the hell out of the way.

The most exciting part of today before the NCAA semis was that gal from Purdue beating the hot shot from Oregon in the 3 point competition...she was pretty good.

Congrats to Wyoming. MWC belongs to the UNM Lady Lobos four conference crowns in the last five years.

Do they play in bikinis? If not, call me when they do.

Example of crass objectification of women.

For more perspective, when Legerski was hired as head coach of the perennially floundering program four years ago, the season ticket-holder base numbered 16.

"We've now got close to 1,000," he said, "and I've got a pretty good feeling that's going to jump for next season."

Legerski had a feeling that he could build the program to this level. He recruited an interesting mix of players who hail from Australia (three, including Hanna Zavecz) to Poland (Podziemska) to Missouri (Jodi Bolerjack) and the basketball not-so-hotbed of Wyoming (Megan McGuffey and Aubrey Vandiver). The eclectic group has helped the Cowgirls set program records for overall wins with 26, for conference wins with 11 (good for second place in the Mountain West) and play deeper into March than ever before.

"There's no way you could envision what is happening with this WNIT run," he said. "We hoped to build our fan base to where we could get 2,500 on a given night. We did that this year. It's a big part of what we want to get accomplished.

"But this has become an event and is truly something special. I've been talking to the players, telling them they need to enjoy this run while it's happening."

Without Zavecz's 12 points or her making life completely miserable for Wisconsin guard Jolene Anderson, UW might not have won this game 72-56.

Without her efforts, UW may not have won the WNIT title.

For efforts like the one Zavecz put forth Saturday - and has been putting up the whole tourney - she was named WNIT MVP.

It took triple overtime for the WNIT Champs to beat the Kansas State women in the Final Four. We could have easily been repeat champions...:strong:

There are alot of similarities between this team and the '85-'86 mens team. That year the cowboys made a run through the NIT, they made it to New York, beat Florida and lost the championship to Ohio State. Almost everybody on that team came back the next year to go to the sweet 16 in '87.

The NIT home games energized the fan base that year in a way that the NCAA tourney can't do because you play home games. Every major contributor to this year's Cowgirls will return next year. Don't be surprised to see this team regularly draw 5000 to home games and carry that energy and momentum deep into the NCAA Tourney next year.

I don't know if your school has a National Championship, but mine does. We have a rich tradition of basketball in Wyoming and this year's Cowgirls show what a basketball starved fan base will do to watch and help their team win.

Regardless of what you think of the NIT, ultimately at the end of the year only two teams end the season with a meaningful win.

Congrats Cowgirls!!!

Man, I used to enjoy running my 5K on the indoor track above the BB courts watching the young ladies play intermural BB during the cold Laramie winters. One of the few things I actually enjoyed there. Not a bad place all in all, but it was a down time for me. Laramie did have more women than sheep. Laramie would be a decent place to live, if I could make a living, and if my wife and daughter wouldn't leave me if I suggested it.
