I've made it known before that I hate overtimes in all football and don't mind ties. However I did hear a different proposal today that makes some sense.
I saw a short bit of Mike and Mike on ESPN and Greenberg (who I think is just some limp d*ck clown they pulled out of the cheap seats during a Jets game) was talking about Belechek complaining that one of the great things about the football rules is how you strategize for the end of a game. When you go into the current overtime system, all of that strategy just goes out the window.
Greenberg's proposal was to just simply add an extra period, probably shorter than a quarter like 7-8 minutes, to see if a winner could be established and if not there would be a tie. He thought that in the NFL, there would be less than one tie per year under this system.
Have at it.

Sudden death....if it wasn't a collision sport....I just wouldn't care.....but since it is....TO THE DEATH

Before hearing it, I was hoping that it would be that sort of half quarter. A final quarter of 7:30 then sudden death in the playoffs after said overtime quarter would be fine with me.
I thought about this, and agree you should get the other chance to win the game instead of some chip shot weenie kicking a field goal because they got the coin toss.
Even if were just a 5 minute OT it would pretty much guarantee two possestions. I would rather see 7:30.

Football is not Hockey. I like the sudden death OT. Belechek does not like having to strategize for a possible OT, maybe he should retire.

You Play To Win The Game and not to play for OT. Well that is unless your first name is Marty. I'm perfectly fine with the way they have it now but I wouldn't mind it if they tinkered around with it to at least give the other team a shot at scoring, but I don't want to see them going back and forth for an extra qtr just kicking fgs.

I guarantee it won't pass anyway. I'm interested to see the vote tho.

For the longest time the NFL used to love to publicize that the team that won the coin flip in overtime only won about 51% of the time. Now the ratio of the team winning the coin flip also winning the game is up to 62%. No longer statistically insignificant, thus no longer talked about by the League.

I guarantee Bowlen will vote for it.
More beer sales unless they no longer sel lit when you need one in crunch time.
I could say something about my ex girlfriend that would be able to sneak a plastic bottle in no problem...but decorum prohibits such a comment. Ha!

I think the notion that not being guarenteed equal offensive possessions in overtime is silly. It essentially argues that offense is more important than defense and special teams. If you lose the coin flip, have your STs and defense come up with a stop. Period. Giving the offense an opportunity to bail out what should be equal parts of the team is ridiculous.
The college overtime system is awful and totally removes the return game from having any factor in the outcome, not to mention it dillutes records. NFL overtime is fine the way it is.

I like the idea of an eight minute regulation period and a seven minute sudden death period. I don't like ties (half a loaf SUCKS).
Eight additional minutes should be more than enough to break the tie.

For all you guys that want to extend the OT period...what happens when a player get's injured for the season after Sudden Death would have expired?

How about the team that never touches the ball in OT...sure they could of stopped them, but don't bring up the lame excuse about injury Garcia...It's weak..everyone is equally tired, and the team that rotated player will have the advantage. Edge better team.
I like the 8 minute OT, followed by a coin toss and SD for another possible 7.
Do you realize how few games would go into second OT? I don't really care if they are tired...they are modern day gladiators, show some balls.

The already had 60 minutes to beat the other.

Lame excuse? For the sake of argument...let's say it's a mid-tier player and he gets injured in OT after Sudden Death would have called the game...then what? Still support it? Now let's say it's the center....or any starter....
I think you would have many ...many people change their tune. This ain't baseball Costos...it's an effing full on collison sport where you can lose your life on any given play.

Your making hypothetical assertions to support a untenable argument. A player can be injured in training camp, preseason and regular games.

Well you pretty much sealed your own argument. I love the Drama Queen argument as well. If someone could lose their life, why does this have to happen in overtime? Players drop dead in training camp, see Minnesota, or the Broncos, Nash dropped dead playing a charity game of BB for his brother that got a heart transplant of, ironically, a heart defect.
Your argument has no legs whatsoever. Yeah, they might be tired. so what. That's when conditioning and rotation with depth comes into play.

He could be injured at any of those times....he could get injured tripping over his dog or getting off the couch...but in this senario....it's in OT....after sudden death would have called the game.
You could potenially...in a season...add an extra game to your team in over times...all of a sudden...your team is gased in week 15.
Sudden Death is the way to go

why not instead of having a seperate coin flip base everything off the original coin flip, if you win you choose either, end, ball first half or second half, or ball overtime, then the other team picks one, just keep switching ends every quater. AND for the love of god dont go the route of hockey and have a shoot out to decide the game.
