View Full Version : A bike for Sam

If one of the mods could make this a sticky, I would appreciate it.
I am wanting to be able to take Sam on bike rides with me. The only thing is, that there is no adaptive equipment that will allow him to enjoy the ride like I think he would. Sam loves to feel the wind rushing by him, and most of the things you can buy will put him in a position that is behind me. The only thing that I have seen was what the father from Team Hoyt used. The son Rick actually sits in front of his father. I have emailed the Hoyt's, and they indicated that this was a bike that they built themselves.
I am what you would call mechanically inept. So I was wondering if anyone here believes that they could construct a bike similar to what Team Hoyt uses. If there is somebody here, I would be interested in talking with you. I will pay for the parts and labor, as long as we think we can keep it to a reasonable cost.
Thanks,
Falconer

Falconer - post a pic of the Hoyt's bike if you can find one.
I can't help you, but hopefully someone can. :)

I could not find one at first, but I finally did. We do not need the shield in front, as we won't be riding the amount that they do, and Sam loves the wind. Samuel is also much smaller than Rick. He is about 34 inches long at the present time.

Looks like something that someone with just a little bit of welding skills could cut up a traditional bike and modify without too much trouble.
Hopefully somebody can help you out.
If the expense gets a little higher than you want and you are open to donations for the cause just let me know. I would be happy to pitch in a few bucks.

Good luck! This is an awesome Project.
I would ask a local bike shop (motorcycle shops included) & see if someone would be willing to fabricate one for you. You might pay a premium but I am sure it would be well worth it.
I hope there is some kind soul out there might like the challange of building you one.

At my school they have an organization set up that specializes in cases just like this, it's called UVATT. A lot of the designs are done by engineering students as part of our curriculum and I've seen cases much more complicated than this. This is their website: http://www.uvatt.org/ might be worth getting in touch with them :)

Great idea Falconer. Hope we find a mod that will sticky this.
Give him a hug from the Mane and post a picture when you get a chance.

I emailed your original post and a link to the thread to Da Vinci Designs, a Denver-based bike designer who specializes in tandem bikes. I've dealt with them before and they're pretty cool guys who might take on something like this (or know someone who might). Good luck, and I'll get back to you if they email me directly.

Most bike shops aren't going to be capable, the jigs and fabrication tools are generally not something that shops keep around, beyond that your run of the mill shop will not have fabrication-capable mechanics, it's just a wholly different set of skills. I would also be very careful with anything other than a fabricator with bicycle experience. The geometry is finicky, you can build a completely unrideable bike by shifting the angles by a few degrees, especially by cantilevering his weight off the front of the bike, as they have with the hoyts. BUT there are many people out there with these skills, Colorado is full of bike builders, I don't know about Southern Illinois.

A tandem builder is a great idea, they are used to building non-standard. You might also look into a recumbant builder. Also, one builder that comes to mind is Doug from the old Manitou customs, he used to build custom aluminum mountain bikes (and forks) before he sold the whole thing, I imagine he still builds and is a really good guy.

I'd be willing to donate as well. We could set up a paypal account (or use one already set up) and then just send the money (similar to how we've done the tailgates) to Falconer if he doesn't have one already.
There is also a bicycle store/builder locally that has a shop online. They do awesome bikes and I've seen some pretty creative ones here locally from these guys. They might be able to build something for you as well.

First off, I would like to say thank you to all the individuals who posted great ideas here. I am hoping that one of them may pan out for us.
Secondly, I would like to thank each member of this community (it is truly a community) for all the support that they have given my family and I. I have been around for almost 3 years now, and it has been awesome to say the least. I originally joined up to keep abreast of my beloved Broncos. The news here was better than I could find anywhere else, and there was a ton of great football knowledge. It soon became my one stop website to get all of my Bronco information. It has continued to get better every year it seems. We now have Training Camp reporters who give some of the best information I have ever read.
However, about 2 ˝ years ago I came on this board looking for some consolation after hearing the doctors say that my son probably would not live to be 2 years old. The outpouring of thoughts and prayers were overwhelming. I had only expected it to be a kind of cathartic release for me, but it turned into so much more than that. Now my little boy is 3 ˝ years old and doing great! He has a mouth full of teeth that he was not supposed to have, and the best smile I have ever seen. All of my prayers have been answered, and then some.
Now once again I have come here asking for some assistance, and once again you have exceeded any expectations I ever had. However, this is something that is a "want" for me. I have become acutely aware of the differences between wants and needs over the past 3 ˝ years. I do hope to be able to use the information provided on this thread to get a bike for Sam and I, but I cannot with good conscious take any donations from anyone here. If it were something that Samuel needed, I would not hesitate to do so, but the fact is that he does not need this. Heck, he probably likes it more that I run pell-mell through the yard with him screaming and yelling than he would the bike. He enjoys the old man making a fool of himself I think. The crazier I act the more he laughs.
So I thank each and every one of you who have made such a kind and noble gesture. It is good to know that the human spirit is so alive and well in so many people.

Falconer, you know they have carbon fiber material that is easy to make now days. There is a Myth Busters where they made cowlings out of foam and then coated it with carbon fiber. It made it extemely light yet really durable. If you are stuggling with getting something retrofitted let me know I have time next month and I can fiddle if need be.

Ok Falconer I have an idea! We have a go kart track located on the Airport at Centennial here in Denver. Now this isn't go-karts this is racing Karts like what F1 drivers start to learn in types. They have ultra-light weight seats as weight is a concern. They look like this:

Now they are damn expensive but I can talk to the owner and see if he can locate one. Then we can fab up a bracket and brace that places same over the wheel but allowes for eyesight. Let me know what you think.

The seat doesn't sit as prone and upright like the pictures looks it actually tilts back a little and we can do it more if need be. We can also come up with a harness system to keep Sam safe.

I second that. You certainly have things in the proper perspective. When life throws us curveballs it certainly can make us stronger if you take it the right way. This certainly appears to have done that for you. When I had a lower back fusion in August it went awry and initially caused nerve damage that made me lose the use of my right leg. I laid in the hospital for over a week prior to my 2nd and 3rd surgery with a very strong possibly that I may never walk again at the age of 34. That was a horrible period followed by several tough months of recovery afterwards but it was probably one of the best things to ever happen to me. It certainly helps you get your priorities back in line and reminds you that friends, family and the simple things in life are what is really important.
While I certainly respect the fact you understand it is a want and not a need but much like steven pointed out I would still be glad to help out as a gift as opposed to charity if the cost of the bike exceeds what you can comfortably do.

Okay, I believe I can step up here. Just so happens The chinese just put my battery business out of business. I have all the tools and welder needed to build this for you as well as an engineer as a partner to make sure it is put together right. Since I have all these fancy tools just laying around might as well do something with them. Now I know how you feel about charity and believe me I cant do it for free. With that said my youngest son was born with cerebal palsey and so I know how great it is to do something for children with special needs. My suggestion is if we do run over cost let the mane pitch in as I am a firm believer in what goes around comes around and this project would probably benifit everyone;. Lets do it !!!!!

The nice thing is there is a second hand stoe here where I bought my wife and I both a couple of mountain bikes in very good condition for $2o.00 total. They were in awsome condition so getting a couple 2 or 3 bikes I can assemble this one bike with will be no problem plus I have the tools to build a frame jig with no problem.

I agree 610. I think the thread title A Bike For Sam should be a community project. Nothing would make people feel better than to part of that!

Hey bronco610,
I did receive your PM, but you have your mailbox set to not receive messages right now. That is ok though; I think that communicating right in this thread is a good idea. This is exactly what I was hoping for bronco610, and the fact that you have a son so similar to Sam is awesome.
I also think that communicating in the thread will allow others to chime in with good ideas. I am not sure how all of this is going to work, but I thought ApaOps5 had a good idea with the seat. You have a good idea what assistive equipment costs, so if we can use other technologies we might be further ahead.
As far as Sam's weight and length, he weighs about 24 pounds and is 34 inches long. The good thing about this is that he doesn't grow very fast. So if we build it just a little bit big, it should last him for a good while. He has very little muscle control, and is not able to sit up without assistance. He does try to curl himself up sometimes, so he would need some kind of restraint system for the seat. Right now the stroller/wheelchair that we have has a four point harness. I will be standing by for any further questions.

Falconer, if I can procure a seat for cheap or free I will let you know. There is club races going on this weekend so I will mosey on down their in my Airport Operations Truck and speak to people. Once they know the reason I am sure I will get tons of offers. I can get seats of all sizes and if its bigger thats fine as long as a good restraint system is made. As for that I am sure we can put our minds together and rig a system for the harness. So I will be in touch with seat options if I can find one.

Maybe they would have a seat that is not fit for racing(like a slight crack) that they can't use maybe?
I'd try a local college with an engineering program as well like someone suggested. I've heard of similar projects.
Also, for seating/restraint, carpet matting is a good material for stability mixed with comfort. It's not hard but it also contours a little. That or like one of those mattress pads.
Good luck and please post pics!

Three wheel bikes tend to be slow and clumsy. Definetly not good around any hills.
I believe I like the designs of the seats over the front wheel two wheel bikes better from both an engineering standpoint as well as handling.

Can you get me some dimensions on this seat. Im not sure Im completely sold on it how ever. It doesnt look like it would give support everywhere I would want as Sams legs get longer. Part of my battery business was a plastics oven and vacuum table that I could make a vacuum formed ABS seat out of to custom fit for Sam.

If you want you can do it your way if you want because that sounds like a more personalized fit for Sam and will ultimately make him more comfortable.
That seat pictured is just one model. I am fairly confident I can get one so I'll let Falconer make the decision and he can let me know before I go asking around.

The seat will be one of the last components anyway so believe me I can make it work if Falconer likes it. In the mean time I do greatly appriciate your help and input and dimensions would be great. Is there a model that comes out a little further for more leg support so as Sam grows his legs dont end up just hanging off the end of the seat?

And here is another website selling something that gives us another option that looks really cool. I am not sure what Sams legs are like though so the stirup option might not be best:

Okay I have the info I need and the dimensions I need I will start on the frame jig tomorrow. If everyone wants I will post pictures of the bike as I go so other people can give me suggestions or ideas as it is built. As far as expense I think we can bring this in for a decent budget. I have all the nessesary metal for the jig and since I will just tack weld it I will be able to reuse it so there will be no expense for that. I will look for the 2 or 3 bikes I will need tomorrow but I am pretty sure that will be less than $50.00. I also have all the welding equipment and supplies so we are good there. My wife is an artist and I will have her do a drawing and rendition of the plans. Of course the one thing I do ask is that we make it a Broncos bike unless Falconer has an objection. This means I could use all the Bronco Logo stickers any one can get there hands on and of course I will paint a custom job of orange and blue. As far as labor goes Falconer and I can decide on that as we go. I usually work for beer.:~ohyah!:
So what do you say Falconer are we good to go ?
The only thing I dont have is the paint supplies and we have to figure out the shipping.

I believe were are a go bronco610. Taco John and I talked yesterday about the bike being orange and blue. It seems great minds, or at least bronco minds think alike. I am a retro guy, so I am hoping for more orange than blue. :)
Everyone in my family is pretty excited about this. !Booya!
I may have forgot to mention in my previous posts and PMs that Sam has very little head control. That is why the regular bike seats that you see will not work for him. The pictures that I post or send you tomorrow should be detailed enough to give you a good idea of how he sits upright in his chair.

You know for shipping would could do a relay type of thing. Where maybe like 4 people drive a leg. One from Dallas to Oklahoma some where, another to Kansas somewhere, and another could meet Falconer in Southern Illinois. It may be cheaper to ship the bike but its another idea.

You have a good point on relay. The shipping would mean I would have to tear it all down and then it would have to be re-assembled and the Idea I have for a stand for loading Sam on is kind of like a Tire boot to hold every thing still and support it wich would cost for weight for shipping since it has to be pretty sturdy.

I have to say I am really excited about this project right now as it is keeping my mind off of other things like what I am going to go into next. How ever like I said my youngest son has cerebal palsey and I wish I had thought of this when he was young. He now is 26 and is 6'4" and weighs 240 so I dont think he would fit in the seat anymore. I know I am kind of a jerk but when it comes to special children I would do anything for them. Many people including myself think wow if I had a son or daughter that was born with a permanent handicap I wouldnt be able to deal with it. Well let me tell you when you have a special child like this it teaches you what love is all about and you love them even more. Off the bike for a minute, my oldest son is just like me and being raised in what I call a redneck house I was pretty rough on him expecting him to be tough and a perfectionest just like me. When Scotty my youngest was born and we found out he had cerebal palsey I dont even remember having a reaction. I can tell you I never had a problem disciplining the older boy(Franklin) but all Scotty had to do was look at me with those big brown cow eyes with tears in them and a trembling lip and I became the biggest wuss in the world. He is the most loving child in the world and if everyone had his spirit there would be no more wars or hate or prejudice in this world. That is why I stepped up to build this bike for Sam because I know Falconer Knows what I am talking about. Not looking for cudos or rep but all special children will always have a special place in my heart. The rest of man kind can jump in a lake as far as I am concerned. But hey, I'm a red neck what do you expect.

I know this is sappy but I can't imagine what my mom went thru and I dont' even have a "real" disabiblity. I am hearing impaired in both ears moderate to severe. But this erma bombeck story sums it up good:
Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures, and a couple by habit. This year, nearly 100,000 women will become mothers of handicapped children. Did you ever wonder how mothers of handicapped children are chosen? Somehow I visualize God hovering over Earth selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As he observes, he instructs his angels to make notes in a giant ledger.
"Armstrong, Beth; son; patron saint, Matthew.
"Forrest, Marjorie; daughter; patron saint, Cecelia.
"Rudledge, Carrie; twins; patron saint.... give her Gerard. He's used to profanity."
Finally, he passes a name to an angel and smiles, "Give her a handicapped child."
The angel is curious. "Why this one, God? She's so happy."
"Exactly," smiles God. "Could I give a handicapped child a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel."
"But has she patience?" asks the angel.
"I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she'll handle it. I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independance. She'll have to teach the child to live in her world and that's not going to be easy."
"But, Lord, I don't think she even believes in you."
God smiles. "No matter. I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness."
The angel gasps, "Selfishness? Is that a virtue?"
God nods. "If she can't seperate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, there is a woman I will bless with a child less then perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a 'spoken word.' She will never consider a 'step' ordinary. When her child says 'Momma' for the first time, she will be present at a miracle and know it! When she describes a tree or a sunset to her blind child, she will see it as few people ever see my creations.
"I will permit her to see clearly the things I see --- ignorance, cruelty, prejudice --- and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as surely as she is here by my side."
"And what about her patron saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in midair.
God smiles. "A mirror will suffice."

still not it but another good story:
When God Created Fathers by Erma Bombeck
When the good Lord was creating fathers, He started with a tall frame. A female angel nearby said, "What kind of father is that? If you're going to make children so close to the ground, why have you put fathers up so high? He won't be able to shoot marbles without kneeling, tuck a child in bed without bending or even kiss a child without a lot of stooping. And God smiled and said, "Yes, but if I make him childsize, who would children have to look up to?"
And when God made a father's hands, they were large and sinewy. The angel shook her head sadly and said, "Large hands are clumsy. They can't manage diaper pins, small buttons, rubber bands on ponytails or even remove splinters caused by baseball bats." And God smiled and said, "I know, but they're large enough to hold everything a small boy empties from his pockets at the end of a day, yet small enough to cup a child's face."
And then God molded long, slim legs and broad shoulders. The angel nearly had a heart attack. "Boy, this is the end of the week, all right," she clucked. "Do you realize you just made a father without a lap? How is he going to pull a child close to him without the kid falling between his legs?" And God smiled and said, "A mother needs a lap. A father needs strong shoulders to pull a sled, balance a boy on a bicycle or hold a sleepy head on the way home from the circus."
God was in the middle of creating two of the largest feet anyone had ever seen when the angel could contain herself no longer. "That's not fair. Do you honestly think those large boats are going to dig out of bed early in the morning when the baby cries? Or walk through a small birthday party without crushing at least three of the guests?" And God smiled and said, "They'll work. You'll see. They'll support a small child who wants to ride a horse to Banbury Cross or scare off mice at the summer cabin or display shoes that will be a challenge to fill."
God worked throughout the night, giving the father few words but a firm, authoritive voice and eyes that saw everything but remained calm and tolerant. Finally, almost as an afterthought, He added tears. Then He turned to the angel and said, "Now, are you satisfied that he can love as much as a mother?"
The angel shutteth up.

It doesn't matter. These are God's special children and they are sent here to teach us so much......patience, tolerance, pure love, compassion. And the parents he picks are so special also because they are the one's that can see the lessons, blessings and joys these children bring. The rest of us are the one's that need to see that these children bring these things, not the sorrow, heartache, and impatience we think we would feel.
Please let any of us know if we can contribute. I would gladly donate. You are all so awesome!

Good afternoon,
I am sorry that it has taken me so long to respond, but we finally put in a sidewalk to the ramp we built for Sam today. I also had to get the lawn cut. I swear that the grass was growing about an inch a day. If I didn't get it done today, it would have started looking like a wild praire out there. :)
I would say that I am in pretty good shape. I have a 21 speed mountain bike that I ride now. I try to ride it back and forth to work during the summer, which is about a 7 mile trip one way. I mostly ride on the roads, so you shouldn't have to worry about it being too heavy duty.
I just wanted to thank you for sharing your story about you and your son Scotty, my wife and I really enjoyed reading it. The funny thing is that I was much like you in the fact that I did not have much of a reaction at first either. I always remember thinking that I could deal with any disability except for a mental disability. When the doctor said that Sam had massive brain damage, I just was in a kind of shock at first. Now 3 1/2 years later, I am so thankful to have a son like Sam. He has taught me so much of what makes me the person I am today.
I used to think of how miserable people were who had children with mental disabilities. Now I would not trade Samuel for a son who played defensive end for the Denver Broncos (it is true that they really don't have a good defensive end, but you get what I mean ;D ). Samuel and I have so much fun together, and he even thinks that I am a pretty funny guy. The impact that he has had on people is tremendous. I think that he has had more of an affect on peoples lives in his 3 1/2 years, than I have had in my 36.
He is getting ready for his first big challenge though. He is getting a little sister in about two months. He is not really fond of children who cry. He usually ends up crying himself. So our little Abigail better not cry very much, or Sam might send her off to live with somebody else. He already had me offer her as a birthday present for Sassy's father, but she declined. He tells me he has a backup plan, but he is not ready to share that with me yet. ;)
P.S. I will be getting the picures ready this afternoon.

EVERY TIME I COME IN HERE YOU ARE SITTING AROUND. GET OFF YOU ASS AND GET SAM HIS BIKE, WE HAVE DEADLINES. MIKEY YOU ARE AN IDIOT.
Thats my best impression of Paul Sr. They remind me of me and my dad. We worked together in the summer while I was in college. Man he would lay into me.
Nice work. Let me know about the relay thing. If we can time it around the middle of the week for delivery I can do it without taking vacation time. If not its no big deal I can take time off on the weekend. I am on weekends this month for my rotation.

Heres whats left to do:
1. Cut and weld frame.
2. Build steering mechanism
3. Make molds for seat and vacuum form seat parts.
4. Assemble seat and glue(I invented a special formula of ABS glue for my battery business)
5. Get leather for bike seat and seat for Sam and do custom stitching with bronco logo.
6. Do mock up of bike.(put it all together and make sure every thing fits).
7. Sand blast frame and primer.
8. Paint frame and put on all the Bronco logos.
9. Clear coat frame.
10. Assemble bike.
11. Test using wife in Sams seat(She weighs about 98 pounds, If it supports her and me peddling I weigh 200 pounds) I wont be worried about Sams saftey.
12. Get bike to Falconer and expect Christmas card every year.
NO PROBLEM:thumbsup:

Nothing to sell except tools and my plastic oven and vacuum table I made. I wont sell any of that because the mad scientist in me waits for projects like this to come along.
I only had one customer who was a good friend of mine who asked if I could make a specific battery and case for him for a german vaccum cleaner he owns the rights to in north and south america. It would have been worth $10,000 a month but china and indonesia bought up all the reserves of nickel. Last Jan. of 06 Nickel was going for $1.50 a pound. Jan. of 07 it is up to $14.00 a pound and the chinese govt. has put sur charges on top of that for any nickel or stainless leaving the country. Last year I could use a US supplier and pay about $5.25 for 7.2 volt nicad battery pack and now no one will even ship in large quantities that will keep my price under $20.00 a pack. I was only able to sell at $12.50 a pack in the case I made. So I basically lost everything.

Funny, thats what happened when my boys were little. Luckily they really took after their mom.
I spent most of the day on seat design, had to get away from the frame for a day as it takes a lot of grinding and re-welding to make sure the frame is good on structural integrity. Yesterday like a dummy one time out of all the grinding I did, I didnt wear my safety goggles and got a metal shaving in my eye. Its fine now and hopefully tomorrow I can finish the mock up on the frame. Sorry no pictures today, but I promise more tomorrow.

Wow, what a couple of days. Yesterday the temp was in the 40's today we actually have snow flurries with an actual chance for a slushy accumulation tonight. I know people in Denver and north are used to this, but here in north central texas we are usually in the 70's and 80's. Have been running around every where trying to find a smaller bike like a stingray for the front forks and wheel. Unfortunetly everone seems to be taking time off for the Easter holiday. I re-designed the front end a bit to make the bike more user friendly for the rider but am stuck until I find the smaller bike to finish with. Arghhhhh ! I will try and at least post a drawing of the bikes desighn this weekend. I wanted the wife to do the actual artist rendering of what the bike will look like completely finished but she has a ton of college homework this weekend. Thank all of you who have contributed so far. This is really a group effort. We could use a little more help as this going to be a little more expensive than I thought. How ever even if everyone has done all you can I greatly appriciate your help and in no way want to give the impression the Mane has not done enough. I know Falconer is thrilled with everyones help and he has a special gift headed your way soon. I think what I will do is give everyone a print of the artist rendition in frame to all of you who participated. I believe it will be something you will be proud of to put on a wall, desk or shelf. Thanks Again we are getting there.:sunshine:

Frame almost done. Tested it today for strength and weight... Put some wheels on it, rolled around and bounced on top of it. It held about 250 lbs of me & another guy and it held up fine. Will finish last part of frame that holds Sam's seat tomorrow. Still looking for a 13-inch Stingray bike for wheel and fork. Now that Easter is over I should have better luck. Will finally send some new pics tomorrow, providing wife (the artist) gets home in time to take them. Would have had more done, but i forgot this was Easter weekend... Happy Easter everyone.

Finished up all the touch-up and prep on welds. This is a mock-up photo.... it is still the wrong fork in front and the steering isn't done yet, because I have yet to find the smaller bike I need.

I'm going to reinforce all the welded joints with fiberglass (not really needed, but better safe than sorry!)
So the next few days won't be a lot to report because it'll be primer, sand, primer, sand. However this weekend I will be starting to work on the seat, and I think a lot of people will find the pictures interesting as I will take everybody through step-by-step how vacuum molding plastic is done. I already have a design for the seat with springs. The shocks on a fork are for weight distribution behind the forks not directly over. The guys at the bike shop said even some one as small as Sam could bottom out the shocks with the weight right over the wheel and fork.

Problem with BMX style they have an entirely different fork set up with a different size top nut and a collar to run brake cables thru. May be a moot point as I think I found the bike I need at the place that I have found these other bikes. Just waiting for the money to clear pay pal so I can go get it.

My son had a high dollar BMX he managed to destroy in a couple years but he's 600 miles away. I doubt he even has it anymore. A high quality fork is important.
A quality fork is very important. Thats why it has to be the newer 1 1/8 " bearing. BMX will not work tho with out major modification. I have looked. Thanks for the offer tho.

Problem with BMX style they have an entirely different fork set up with a different size top nut and a collar to run brake cables thru. May be a moot point as I think I found the bike I need at the place that I have found these other bikes. Just waiting for the money to clear pay pal so I can go get it.
Great! :yayaya:

By the way Mock on that suggestion you pmd me about brazing. The problem brazing has is it is not a true weld. It uses a filler to join 2 metals with out really melting into them. Brazing would work if the pipes fit in to one another but is not really recomended when the two pipes are at a 90 degree angle with pressue being put directly on the joint and are not fitted one inside the oter to form a t first. But it was still a good idea.8')

What a great project. Be sure to get a beefy over sized headset is a must and also disk brakes for more reliable and smooth braking. With that much extra weight so far up front you are really going to have to dial in the breaks and make sure they're smooth.
I raced cross-country and downhill sport class Mtn. bikes as a hobby back in the day when the downhill bikes were still somewhat real bicycles. You wouldn't believe how much the geometry of the frame matters. weight distribution as well. A light pack over the bars could sent you endo! Cant image a little person up front.
Please be careful.
Did you have blue prints for this frames angles or did you just eye-ball it?

Okay, sorry about the lack of updates. My stupid car engine decided to blow on top of everything else. The bike is great. Took it on a 5 mile run today with it just mocked up in 9th gear out of 18. Then had my neighbor ride it and he took it jumping curbs to test the welds. Did a test of 50 pounds where Sam would set to make sure of the handeling. This bike rides like a dream. Sorry no pics tonight as the wife, who is the real computer genius has been working a brutal schedule between work and going to school has not been around to post. Pics tomorrow I promise. Rode it up to the local convience store where 4 people oohed and awed it. Loved the steering set up whitch ended up being a set up like us old timers used for double deuce carbs in the old days with linkage. The idea I had for chane drive steering didnt work it was way to squirley. How ever on a good note my neighbor who rides bikes often said it handled better than a normal bike. I cant tell you how pleased I am with the bike, it rides smoother than the normal bikes out there. As far as the breaking it is wonderful,. as well as the weight distribution factor over the wheel. The 50 pounds didnt slow it down at all. I am really going to have a hard time parting with it, as not only is it perfect for Sam but just a great handling bike to ride.:sunshine:

Not blue prints, a pictue. A lot of the bike is my own design. The regular brakes of a mountain bike work fine even with the weght up front. The steering is amazing, better than an off the shelf store bike. Nailed the set up of the front wheel. I swear it takes less tork to peddle than the regular mountain bike even with 50 pounds of weight on the front. Sam is going to be the happiest kid in the world.:sunshine:

And when Sam is too big for the bike, you know Falconer will "pay it forward" to some other deserving family. This is a very cool thing.

Rides like a dream! Still have not sandblasted or fiberglassed yet as I have to do more welding to mount the seat. Also wanted to check road worthiness. Actually handles better than my mountain bike did! The bike is an 18-speed steers on a dime and should be able to handle any terrain. Even took it in a field and my old worn out body didn't have any trouble.

Custom made oven heated to 400 degrees fahrenheit (it can go up to 700). Cooks a pizza faster than any oven out there, and yes we actually baked 2 in it!
It is a convection oven with a blower, made out of an old Sears gas BBQ grill with a gas regulator from a DNA machine that my neighbor got for me so that we can really crank up the gas.
Sheet being put into oven in this pic, through slot in door.

Put in place over mold on custom made vacuum table. This table has 2 vacuum pumps that pull 30" of vacuum. There's over 200 holes in the table, that pulls the air out and pulls the plastic down around the mold. If all goes right we have a panel.
Yes, we have a successful shell. Six of them will make up the bulk of the seat. More pictures tomorrow as you see the seat come together. In the meantime those of you with any engineering knowledge try and figure out how I will use 6 of these panels all identical to make a seat.
Answer tomorrow!

I encourage any of you to donate that are holding back merely because you "don't know how it works". It was virtually painless...just a credit card form with name and address....through a secure "https" site.
Of course, I had to call my sister at work and ask her "so tell me...how does this PayPal thing work?" It's OK, she already thinks I'm a wuss anyway. Ha!

Along with the shirts, I am planning on letting everyone here see Samuel's maiden voyage on the bike (we need to come up with a good name for it). However, I will need a little technical help. My idea is to post it to Youtube and then post it here. What I need to know is what kind of video camera do I need to get ahold of? Also, do I need to record it in any kind of special format, or do all cameras automatically do that? I will probably have more questions when I am ready to upload the video, but I will save them for later.
Thanks in advance,

For all the kind PM's from every body thank you so much. I think we are in the home stretch. I cant wait for the pics with Sam. I built the seat to sit out upfront so his view is unubstructed.
