PHOENIX - Al Wilson is healthy enough to play in Denver or somewhere else in 2007.

At least that's the opinion of Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

The New York Giants were ready to make a trade for the linebacker last week but failed Wilson during his physical because of concerns about his neck.

But Shanahan said the Broncos' medical staff and consultants that include renowned spine and back surgeon Dr. Robert Watkins have cleared Wilson to participate in team activities and play in games.

"I will say any time you've got a guy like Dr. Watkins who approves a guy, approves his neck and his playing ability, for (Wilson) to be failed in a physical is interesting," Shanahan said Tuesday. "You've got one of the best neck specialists in the world, OKs him to play and he flunks a physical in New York. That's a little bit unusual."

Wilson, 29, has had some neck troubles in his career. In 2003, he described "an unbearable" ache, and he previously has endured "stingers" - a blow to a network of nerves that branch from the neck, running down the shoulders and into the hands and fingers.

He said he hasn't had much trouble since, but he was carted off the field last season after colliding with defensive tackle Gerard Warren against Seattle. He played in the next weeks.

Wilson's agent, Peter Schaffer, is trying to secure trading partners for the Broncos, though he and Shanahan have left open the possibility Wilson could return to the Broncos for the 2007 season.

However, with Wilson bearing some hefty salary-cap figures during the next four years, including more than $7 million in 2007, it's likely the Broncos will ask him to redo his deal if he is to stay.

"But I don't really want to talk about Al until I talk to him," Shanahan said.

Denver isn't stupid, they wouldn't have sent Wilson over there if they didn't think he would pass the physical. Obviously he passed ours... and in a case where a player doesn't, a la Courtney Brown, they took other steps.

I think the Giants freaked about the cost and spun it whatever way they wanted to.

Dr. Watkins said his neck checked out. The Giants failed him due to his back not his neck.

I think the Giants failed him because they ok'd Arrington and they are now set to be a lot more strict about players coming in and taking physicals.

Could be that they got a last minute offer from the Skins at a point where the only way they could nix the trade was via the physical - so they failed him on a BS reason so they could pull out of the trade. however in doing so they also trashed Al's trade value....this is the kind of thing that can sour relations between two franchises....

Of course this is all speculation but we're not really going to know anything more untill there are some further developments...

Even if teams are convinced Al is fine they will still use the NY physical to force the price down...

Here's another thought...maybe the Giants didn't really want him at all. Maybe they just wanted to make sure he didn't wind up in Washington or Philly. What better way to accomplish that than casting him as damaged goods?

We now know why they flunked Al's physical. You just have to look at the pittance of a contract Mitchell got from them-$1m. They chickened out because of the hefty salaries Al had and maybe the fact that Al wanted paid as the Pro-Bowler he is.

OK, where is the real smoking gun here? The grassy knoll?

My question is, and has been, who the hell do we have in place to replace Al? Pierce is long gone and Predator left this offseason. Fine, we move DJ to the middle, then who plays Sam?

I don't think we were getting fair value anyway...cut his salary down to 2.6 and a SB of 1m they can put into next years easier cap. That would shave about 2.75 off this years cap.

I would chose to believethe Broncos, and not the Midgets. An easy way for the Midgets to back out of the trade. I truly hope that Al is our MLB in 2007. I think that will be the case.

I just want BIG AL as one of our starting LBs next season (and many seasons to come). He might be able to wreck havoc from the SAM. Plus if he's been calling signals for so long, be it a new scheme or not, he could be really dangerous because he could diagnose and attack the opposition, making him twice as dangerous.

If we could JUST get a decent D-LINE it would make the rest of the D so much better, because it wouldn't have to cover for their arse on every play. All they would have to do is THEIR job...

Makes sense, especially after the Mitchell signing you pointed out...

"But I don't really want to talk about Al until I talk to him," Shanahan said.
That pretty much confirms that no player is in the dark on these matters.
