I know PFT is hit or miss but this is pretty interesting......

BRONCOS ALMOST TRADED UP TO NO. 2
We mentioned several days ago that a team that we did not name nearly pulled off a trade with the Lions for the No. 2 overall pick in the draft.
We can now report that the team was the Broncos.
The package would have included linebacker Al Wilson, who was linked on Thursday night to a potential trade to the Giants by Adam Schefter of NFL Network. But Wilson's agent, Peter Schaffer, tells the Associated Press that a deal that would send Wilson to New York is not imminent.
"It's a little premature," Schaffer said. "There are a number of teams that are interested in Al -- Al is a player who is definitely in high demand -- but no decision has been made even whether Al will be traded. There's a number of moving parts. We're just going to take it one move at a time."
Schaffer was hired recently by Wilson because his former agent, Norm Nixon, is no longer certified by the NFLPA to represent players.
Wilson, a five-time Pro Bowler, apparently is on the trading block because the team has overspent in free agency.
If the Broncos were to snag the No. 2 overall pick, they likely would be targeting left tackle Joe Thomas, another Schaffer client. They clearly aren't in the market for a first-round quarterback or running back, given the addition of Jay Cutler and Travis Henry in the past 12 months. The other possible pick for the Broncos at No. 2 would be receiver Calvin Johnson.

Wow.. Losing Al would be rough, but how sweet would it be to add Joe Thomas or Calvin Johnson on the opposite side of Javon Walker. :)
Let's see, the Broncos are dealing Al because the have cap problems. Solution is to move up to the #2 over all draft choice, now that is a cost cutting move for ya.

I ain't complaining if we can get the #2 pick....
I just keep asking myself....would I rather have Calvin Johnson or Joe Thomas?
Joe Thomas would fill a need but Calvin Johnson is the best player in the draft....
I'd go with Johnson if the Raiders didn't beat us to him...(this is all hypothetical of course)

I think the Broncos are working the Giants to get the Lions to pull the trigger. That would make sense......Shanny wanted Schefter to leak out the info of a possible Giants trade in order to make the Lions think twice, as they really want Al Wilson.
If we do this trade for the 2 spot and Joe Thomas turns out to be a Galley or CJ turns out to be a David Boston we will suffer the move for years.

Why would they balk at moving Wilson for the #2 (granted we dont know all the details) and then start getting hot and heavy with the Giants for a mid round pick/D Lineman? Something doesnt add up.

I think we are trying to get the Giants 2nd rounder at the very least if not better....
that would give us 2 2nd rounders & 2 3rd rounders...
we could then try and package our 1st, a 2nd rounder, & a 3rd rounder to move up to the #2 pick....who knows, maybe we'd have to give up a little more also...but maybe that's the path denver is going down

You can't think that way and be afraid to make these types of moves. That's just weak.

You could say the same about trading up for Cutler last year, or giving any big contract to any player. There is always risk involved when you guarantee money to someone in such a physically demanding sport.
At this point I'd rather have Calvin Johnson or Joe Thomas locked up for 6 years over paying Wilson's salary the final 3-4 years of his career.

Exactly...something smells fishy about all this. I don't buy the salary dump goal as the reason we're trying to move Al. Either the front office knows somethiing about Al's physical condition or this is another patented Shanahan smoke screens to muddy the waters for teams trying to figure out what we'll do. Maybe he's trying to make it look like we want to move to #2 to take Johnson when the real target is Jamal Anderson. I just can't see possible trade as a money saver and if it is then what in the Sam Hill were they thinking paying out all this $$$ for half the free agents on the market?

I agree....I don't think it's as much about paying him 5 mil.....
I think shanny is just trying to improve his team overall and sees value in Wilson on the market....
Slide DJ into his place and have a minimal decline (if any) in production from our LB core....DJ has been out of position since his sophmore season....and i've always said that there is no reason for us to have 3 really good linebackers....Nate Webster will be just fine on the strong side....
trade wilson while he still has value because Al will start to decline soon....
I for one am excited with what shanny & co. are trying to do

Calvin Johnson all the way. Him, Walker and Marshall...with Schef and Cutler...wow.

i can never figure shanny out. Is he throwing smoke screens or is this for real? I guess time will tell, but trading big Al isnt such a bad idea if we get what we really need out of it, if we get anyone id like to be Joe thomas.

I'm thinking Al is just getting old. He has a pretty hefty paycheck and the broncos want to move him now instead of later when physically he may not garner as much. Some solid defensive prospects this draft... Makes sense to me...dman

I have really mixed emotions about trading Al. Tough call. Glad I don't have to make it.

Yeah, NOTHING but downside on that move, huh? ::)

Wilson has been a great player for the Broncos, but he is definetly in decline. Plus you have to get DJ on the field more. With all the nickle packages Defenses are forced to play it doesn't make sense to have 3 top tier linebackers. If we could get a 3rd for him, it makes it that much more likely we can move into the top 10. The Skins probably want to swap picks and recieve a 2nd and 3rd, so the Wilson move would help. Plus his value is as high as it will be right now. He has had some concussion problems this past year and those things add up quickly.

And if he turns out to be Johnathan Ogden then we look like geniuses... It's all a moot point since this trade didn't happen.
I love Al....but I love the Broncos more.
DJ will be getting his $$$ soon...and he needs to be locked up long-term.
Al's value will never be higher than now.
Financially it seems to make sense.
Calvin Johnson....wow. I have watched him ball for four years now. Great guy and HOF possibilities as a player.
If it went down like that...I would be pretty excited.

Denver has both Rod and Javon to make cap room, then a rumor comes out that we are trading wilson to free up more cap...why? What is the need for 10m in additional cap space? Find that answer, and the trade scenario makes a ton of sense...if we are moving up to get a top 6 draft pick...

This is def. not about cap room, it's abut trading Wilson at the height of his value ad the fact that he won't see the field as much next year because DJ will replace him in Nickel situations. Very curious to see what kind of compensation we get for him. Something like a second rounder and Tuck (if its with the giants and considering Tuck's health) would make sense.

Can you imagine any scenario in which the Broncos do not take an offensive lineman in the first round?
If the Broncos were to snag the No. 2 overall pick, they likely would be targeting left tackle Joe Thomas, another Schaffer client.
Damn Gonzo, how do you do it? How do you know so much? You are amazing. Simply amazing.

Gonzo, didn't you just finish stroking yourself in your own thread?
Also, your thread was any scenario in which the Broncos don't take OL with #21. Well Cheesedi.k, there's a scenario. They trade away the pick. You lose.

Considering that this is just a rumor, I would wait a bit before you pat yourself on the back, Gonzo. Do we REALLY have to wait another month to get this draft going?ZZZ...

Or even better yet would be to snag the #2 pick and use that for leverage to stockpile picks from another team that desperately wants to move up.
