View Full Version : What's everybody doing to get in (or stay in) shape for the summer?

Ya, it's about that time. Soon enough, the white flabbiness we keep concealed for 8 months out of the year will be exposed at waterparks and beaches throughout the country. Are you ready? I can tell you without hesitation that i in fact am NOT.
Curious to see what everyone is got going to look good and feel good for these killer summer months that are fast approaching(yes, i know fitness is supposed to be a lifestyle, but for people like ME addicted to food and a bit of laziness, it comes once every four seasons).
I recently purchased a Crossbow by Weider. LOVE IT. Kicks my ass and i'm starting to catch glimpses of muscles I haven't seen in a while. also... Lucky for me, my job has me walking at least three miles a day, so that kinda helps. In addition i'm the proud owner of a yoga ball, which usually becomes my video game chair but occasionally see's some action during bedroom olympics.
What's everybody else using or doing?
Curious to see if anyone's used those selectech dumbells by bowflex, I'd like to hear how they rate.

typical stuff
15-20 mins cardio 3x weekly
45-60 mins resistance 3x weekly
clean diet 5 days/wk
cheat weekends
nothing serious, preventative maintenance
One thing I have noticed thats different this year. I also fall off the horse for about 2 1/2 months every holiday season starting around Halloween. This year, the gluttony was no different - but the weight gain was! I am now in my early 30's and I guess age is starting to come into the picture cause I gained a good 10 lbs more than I usually do that time of year.
And its coming off slower too. :-(
But at least I am on pace for summer! Of course where I am at (AZ), summer starts...now. Oops, maybe not quite on pace that I should be! lol

allright people that's what i like to HEAR!
Any goals? I'm down about 15 lbs since last november, but I'd really like to get down to about 230 or so.
What kind of food is everybody eating? Does that whole 5 small meals thing really work at boosting metabolism?

For the last few months, I've been lifting 3x 90 minutes a week and doing cardio 2-3x 60 minutes on the elliptical machine (my knees can't take the pounding of running, even on a treadmill).
Like RMT, I'm in my early 30s and it is easy to gain weight now versus just a few years ago. Last year I noticed that I was a bit overweight (20-25 pounds), so I started with some cardio a few days a week and eating right, then at the beginning of the year, I added lifting back into my routine since I'd much rather lift than do just about anything else in the gym. I'm probably down about 10% body fat in the last 6 months with a bit of the gut to shed still and wanting to add back a few pounds of muscle. I should be ready about the time summer hits.

Food: Keep it clean. Use your head, you know whats right and whats not. Of course, you are also human so thats why I allow myself weekends to live guilt free. M-F its all salmon, skinless chicken breasts, plenty of fruits/veggies, etc, etc, etc. Its worth it though - makes that pizza and wings on saturday night taste so much better! lol
an easy rule for me to follow: Was that food product available 200 years ago? No? Dont eat it! (avoid processed foods!!!!!!)
Yes - eating smaller meals more frequently definately helps. It prevents you from ever feeling like you are starving, therefore eat way too much at one sitting. You will never feel like 'supersizing' at lunch if you had an apple and energy bar 1.5 hours before.
Also - drink tons of water, it melts fat.

10% BF is outstanding! Way to go! You know Sharpe was at 8% during his playing days so you are doing really well!
I am 6'1" 189lbs - had the caliper test at the gym earlier this month and was 19%!
That means I was over 20% at one point during the 'off season' which easily would be highest of my life.
But I dunno if I will ever get down around 10% - kudos to you

We buy most of our meats in bulk. Lately wife has been picking up the salmon at Costco freezer section. Its a big bag of individually sealed, pre-marinade portions. Just thaw and cook.
The fruits/veggies we usually just buy in the produce section of our local Fry's (King Soopers to you guys) Prices on fresh produce have come up a lot the past couple years. But its still cheaper snacking than junk food.
Its huge help that my wife is far more serious than I am about the whole nutrition thing. She does all the shopping - I just eat.
That 6min mile may be a tad ambitious though - I hate cardio and want to dominate it - but I am a smoker, and I think as long as I am I will never be running 6min miles without puking lol But its worth a shot! (yeah yeah, gotta quit smoking, its the last bad health habit I really have, toughest to shake too)

I've been working out since I was 14. First for sports, and now it's been so long I don't think I could stop if I wanted too.
I'd suggest a trainer that has EXPERIENCE, don't just get a kid who started at a gym 2 weeks ago. A good trainer will lay out a nutrition program, a weight routine, and a cardio program. It really takes a combo of all 3.
If that's out of the budget, there is lots of info on the net or some basic books that can get you going in the right direction.
For the average person, I'd suggest Body for Life, it's an easy to follow program that will get you in decent shape...

I have a hard time running because I'm old and my knees suck. I go to the gym 3 days a week and use the stair climber to get some cardio.
Well I'm not old but my knees suck, so until I lose some serious weight I'm not going to run frequently. Went to the doctor and he said if I wanted to run I needed to weigh about 180. Not a chance in hell of that happening as I haven't weighed 180 since my freshman year in high school.
If I get to 240-250 I'll be content.
I use the eliptical machine for 30 minutes (5 minute cool down) three times a week, and do some kind of lifting three times a week for 30-45 minutes. The unfortunate thing is that for some reason I put on muscle weight extremely fast (especially in my legs), so if I work them out to much I won't be able to wear any of my pants.
I started working out 2 months ago, and the first three weeks I gained 10-15 pounds. 5 weeks later I'm back at the weight I started at.

MAn, I hope people have been working out before now if they want to be ready by summer. It's pretty much here in AZ. I try to hit the gym twice a day monday-friday, then I heal over the weekend. An hour or so of cardio, go get lunch, go to class, then lift later in the day. I'd be doing better if I didn't have such a sweet tooth.
Oh yeah, and I'm with you Rubiyat. I did the amatuer body building thing several years ago, the minute you stop it's like all the muscle turns to fat. I've been trying to lean out ever since.

Persistence is the key. Whatever you are doing, keep doing it. Allow yourself to "mess up" once a week. More than that and it becomes a problem. If trimming down is the goal, count calories. You learn to make calories count when you eat. Have meals thought out that have no more than 500 calories and eat those meals regularly. Its a lot easier when you already know what you can and will eat. 2000 calories a day with reg. exercise should be low enough for most men to lose weight. That is what I try to consume.
I am in the process right now of getting into shape (there is no back, because I have never been there in the first place). I have lost about 15 lbs in 6 weeks. Nothing spectacular but noticable. I plan on doubling that by the end of this semester, about 6 more weeks. That would put me around 10% body fat. I have been between 18-25 my short adult life.
One thing I have done for cardio that has worked really well is walking on the treadmill uphill. I usually put the speed at 4mph and incline at 15 (the highest most go). I found that I burn more calories per hour at a lower heart rate than when I run, which allows me to stay on longer. I adjust speed to get my heart rate around 80% of max (about 160 bpm for me). This is a great alternative for those who find it hard to run for long periods of time.
P.S. I hate people that can't gain weight. I went home for spring break and took the week off, and gained 6 lbs. Genetics kinda stinks at times. I feel like I have been swimming upstream my whole life and can never get to where I want to be.
Anyway, theres my rant for the day.

you sound like you are doing pretty good. Keep it up, there's a good chance that you'll see a plateau pretty soon, so don't let it frustrate you. You usually see the biggest change in the first month or 2, and then from there progress slows down unfortunatly, especially if you are creeping under 15% body fat. If your progress starts slowing down change up what you are doing a bit.

Thanks. I'm not worried too much about that, since I didn't have a major change to begin with. I basically added a little cardio and tightened up on my diet from before. I had been lifting weights 4x a week and playing basketball 2-3x a week before that, so I didn't have a huge drop at first. I have some ideas about things I can change though. I have a racquetball tournament I will be at all next week then I have a month where I will hit work hard to lose 10-15 lbs.
I am most worried about the month after though. Its a lot easier to eat well and work out regularly as a college student with a set schedule for me than living at home and having an uncertain schedule for work. I usually am at my best when everyday is the same and I know when I will be able to eat and work out. Plus, my moms freezer has a lot more goodies in it than mine does.

Absolutely, especially for those who mentioned they had knee problems which prevented them running.
A few years back I did 6 days a week, ca. 45 minutes a day, plus stretching and some short stationary bike bursts and it got me into fine shape.

I like to swim, usually 3/4 to a mile a day. I find doing laps 5 days a week with a little bit of free weights is a great way to get in shape. Tennis is also a favorite but is more difficult to have as a routine exercise.

Well, for the first time ever I have actually been motivated to lose weight. The result was going from 295(ugh) pounds to 260 in 7 weeks. My goal is 220 by the end of summer, but the might be a little ambitious.
What I have been doind is going to the rec center 4 times a week(mon, wed, fri, sun) for 2-2.5 hours. The first 40 minutes I lift weights, and the next 20 minutes I go on the eliptical. The rest of the time I play basketball in the GYM. I also play Basketball/Softball on saturdays for around 2-3 hours.
During the day, I only eat at most 1300 calories, and it has filled me up. There are some points that I get a bit hungry, but then I can have a snack thats healthy. I only have one cheat day, which is usually friday, to have whatever I want, as long as the total amount of calories is under 2000.
Overall, I have to say that what I have been doing is really cool and rewarding. I like not having *as many* fat jokes said about me as before :D

I walk about three miles a day (to work). I'd still like to lose 10 lbs or so, (I"m 190-200) but am just too lazy. I go on and off doing pushups/sit ups.

I go to the gym six days a week...5 of them I do 30 minutes of lifting on various groups of muscles (Pecs, then back, then shoulder & triceps, then biceps and forearms, then legs)
I hit the treadmill for about 45 minutes each day run for 20 minutes of it and walk at an incline for the rest. In three weeks I am down from 280 to 268. Changed my diet to low cal, clean food. I have a goal of 230. I have quite a bit of muscle mass from my powerlifting days so my weight is a tad bit deceptive.

Running. That and swimming usually work most muscle groups. So I have heard. Its been years since I have consistently worked out so I am excited about it. Not in a gym tho, I want to be outside so I can see the scenery change and listen to my mp3 player and ignore the world for one hour every day.

Whacking the turtle isn't exactly giving me six pack abs. Since Beezer is in a cookie I need to explore other options. Beezer just has this shiat eating grin when he lays on my spot.

Training for a half marathon in June....And then another in Oct.http://www.racecenter.com/pacificcrest/runs/index.htm
I ran the Pacific Crest two years ago! The course is so beautiful. It intertwines through beautiful Sunriver, OR. The Bend Marathon is mostly along the beautiful Deschutes River and through town. I ran this one a year and a half ago.

Gym 4-6 x a week. 30 minutes cardio (treadmill 4 mph and 15% grade) Then hit the weights for an hour to an hour and a half. As some of you know I was at 260lbs 18 months ago, Now I go between 202-208. A perfect world would be 190ish with some "guns"
The older you get, the harder it is to lose it. Time to head off to Golds now :)

Anybody have any ideas for good, cheep, easy, low calorie meals. I often eat the same 3 meals every day. I usually eat a PBJ for breakfast, wheat pasta with grilled chicken and Ragu, and Grilled chicken sandwhich with BBQ sauce. That puts me at about 1500 kcals and I have a bit of room for some error during the day. I would like more variety though.

I usually go with a bowl of Total raisin bran for breakfast and a Healthy Choice frozen meal for lunch. Some of them are pretty tasty and are in the 250-380 cal range. They don't always fill me up, but I keep lots of fresh fruit around for such occasions.

When I was drinking I spent time as a street person, one time for over 6 months.
I now have assets conservatively valued at over, well a lot of money. The only difference is I now do not put alcohol in my body.

Yeah, not drinking so much will help your life out a little more.
I gotta get one of those.
They are great. Cost less than $50 and you can make greaseless food with great ease. I steam brown rice or millet (any whole grain really) and when the rice is done I steam a melody of veggies, toss in a side of salad and you are set. The variety is endless.

Check out Crossfit.com
I have been doing it for about 2 months or so. I cant do all the stuff, but I feel good about it. If I can ever do a great set of about 10-15 handstand push ups, I feel like the most accomplished middle-aged dude in the area!
Now that I am in mid 30s, "getting in shape for the summer" is a year around activity. So, I was working out starting last fall after recovering from foot surgery on both feet. Little stuff, running a few miles, a couple of bench presses, etc. Then, I started talking to a guy that I work with. Dude is in his 40s and looks fitter than a lot of 20 year old football players. Extraordinary. He turned me onto Crossfit.
Tomorrow he and I and a bunch of us are getting together and doing the following work out.
Run 1/4 mile
100 meter fireman's carry
50 pull ups
100 push ups
100 sit ups
50 dips
50 knees to elbows
run 1/4 mile

I lift weights 5 days a week year round (furnaces and A/C's) and walk around 200 stairs a day taking two at a time, a workout machine would just make for a nice paper weight. Weigh the same as I did 30 years ago.

allright people that's what i like to HEAR!
Any goals? I'm down about 15 lbs since last november, but I'd really like to get down to about 230 or so.
What kind of food is everybody eating? Does that whole 5 small meals thing really work at boosting metabolism?
....
Since 10/1/06, I've lost 40 pounds and more than 4 inches off my waistline.
Oatmeal & Banana for breakfast + Grilled chicken salad for lunch + healthy choice microwave dinners + unbuttered popcorn for snacks + exercise bike (25 minutes 6 nights a week) + enormous amounts of stress and anxiety.
That's really all it takes.
I feel like crap, but I'm looking awesome.

I hope to find a new quiet place in the sun on the water and get back to swimming in the ocean every day. I'm out of Cabo this year, it flat out sucks now. Grown from 25,000 to 250,000 in 18 years.
It does suck.
Wasn't that long ago when we showed up went straight to a rented jeep that was gassed and backed up to baggage claim, idling away, with the requested case of beer iced down in the back.

Well I just started sticking to a strict regimen here about three weeks ago, as I decided I am too damn fat. So I cut down on the drinking (yeah, shocker, I know) which in itself has shown results, but in addition, I am hitting the gym 6 days a week with one day off. My workout has gone like this over the past few weeks:
Sunday: usually run 30 minutes on the treadmill and ride 30 on the stationary bike.
Monday: off
Tuesday: upper body training (chest, back, shoulders, traps, bis, tris in sets that go as follows: set of 12, add weight, wait a minute then do ten, rest a minute, then 8, rest a minute, then 6, rest a minute, then do 12 again, then immediately do another set of 12 on another exercise on the same body part. Rest two minutes and move to the next body part and repeat the sets. Then after the work out, do 30 minutes of cardio.
Wednesday: elliptical 30 minutes, lateral bike 30 minutes
Thursday: Leg workout then 30 minutes of cardio
Friday: Bike 30 minutes and jog 30 minutes
Saturday: upper body workout then 30 minutes of cardio
In three weeks I have dropped about 12 pounds thus far and am starting to see my muscles again. I hope to lose 30 pounds by the end of may and run a half marathon by the end of summer. I have a 5k coming up April 21st, 10k mid-may, adventure race in June and hopefully will be good to do the half by the end of july. Wish me luck

.....I'm utterly impressed!! You people are MOTIVATED! I've gotten some really good ideas from all of your regimens. Definitely gonna start doing a lot more cardio (that uphill treadclimb for 45 minutes is getting the green light tonight), and the diet HAS to change. I was talking to someone today about yoga, she made me a believer. i think there's a class out at Kipling and Chatfield that's pretty cheap i'm going to check out.
By the way, Meck...if you check back on this thread...I saw an infomercial about that 90px thing. Is it really everything it's cracked up to be? 60 pounds?!?! the whole muscle confusion idea seems interesting. hmm
Thanks to everybody so far though, seriously. Got some great new workouts planned and I'm probably going to use the steamer in my kitchen that's collecting dust.
You people motivate me, for real. I've got a before picture (which I'm not subjecting anyone to) that I just put up on the fridge. SCARY! But i'm hoping it helps curb the cravings when you see your fat ass whilst reaching for chubby food. When I get down to where I wanna be, I'll post the before / after.
PS anybody know of any good boxing classes/courses in the denver littleton area?

Only difference from winter is a I will now run outside vs the treadmill. But I swear it great feeling when you are completely exhausted after a great workout.
Lift 5 times week
3 days of cardo (overlapped with weights)
1 day of core training/stretching

I pretty much have come to the conclusion you can do any type of excersise and get results if you watch the diet. Is more important than anything else. I've started supplement creatine and protein powder and I have greatly increased my lifting. Also, in the past three weeks I started sprinting rather than jogging and dropped from an all time high of 212 back to 200. I think intensity is the key. Stil have to high a precentage of fat though, I'm thinking about nutri-system. Anybody tried it? I would love to get down to 175-180 and look cut. I just like to drink and have poor food discipline. I need someone to literally fix the right food for me.

I'm running the Rock and Roll marathon again this year for sure. I had major cramps, had to stop and crap twice, then badly sprained my ankle at mile 21, but I finished with a 3:35.
This year, I am eating better before the race, not going out so fast like last year, (first 10k I ran in 38 minutes), and am not going to sprain my ankle hopefully. I'm aiming for what I should have run last year, a 3:15.
Besides that I lift 4 days a week, and am benching 230 now which is a goal I have been going after and finally achieved after 6 years. Pretty stoked.
For motivation I think

Their new trick is to steal you luggage at the airport while the second guy distracts you and than make you agree to that a timeshare presentation before they "find" your bags. No joke!
