Way to go Coach!!!!

Colts coach Tony Dungy said he knows some people would prefer him to steer clear of the gay marriage debate, but he used a speech Tuesday night to clearly stake out his position. Dungy told more than 700 people at the Indiana Family Institute's banquet that he agrees with that organization's position supporting a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between one man and one woman. "I appreciate the stance they're taking, and I embrace that stance," Dungy said. Local and national gay-rights organizations had criticized Dungy for accepting the invitation to appear at the banquet. The institute, affiliated with Focus on the Family, has been one of the leading supporters of the marriage amendment.

Marriage is between a man and a woman. Doesn't mean the government has the right to exclude certain people from having their union recognized by the state.

Come on, it's Whitey's fault 20% of african american males have legal issues!

Sort of reminds me of an old Sanford and Son episode where Fred has
to go to court, and when he shows up in court, almost everyone
there is black. Fred makes the comment "There's enough n****rs
here to make a Tarzan movie".

(This was back in the days when people could say n****r on TV.

Well bendog thats whitey's fault also. It's all those damn laws about beating and stealing from people we formulated just to go after them.

it's not the fault of the african americans who have not been socially conditioned to accept whitey's middle class values.

These guys should form a leadership caucus without the words "black" or "African American" anywhere in the title.

Dungy, Cosby, Rice, Obama, etc.

Much could be done if someone would show some real leadership for that community.

At some point, someone is going to have to tell it like it is. They are going to have to say that black Americans can either accept where they are at, and begin to put effort into becoming at least a part of mainstream "white" society to chase the white picket fence. If they dont do that, then their only other options are pretty dramatic. They could secede, they could move, or they could go out in a blaze of glory. The door is as open as it has ever been here for them to choose any of those options.

I think that Aunt Jemima was something of a pioneer. A trend-setter. She sported a modified doo-rag over a century before her time. She's something of a gangsta-style genius.

Screw the hypocrite .... where was he when his son was slipping into suicide? At work, that's where - choosing his profession over his son, period. But is Dungy a bad parent? NO WAY! He is a good guy, and he'll 'courageously' walk over his dead son's grave to tell others who they can marry. F*** that hypocrite.

I'm sick of parents refusing to admit they screwed up ... if you listen to these Kurtwood Smith characters from "Dead Poet's Society," nobody's a bad parent! It's society's fault, the schools' fault, drugs, etc... Andy Reid, Rudy Giuliani, Dungy .... they are all excellent Dads!

Losers.

I'm all for better fathering, but I would like to know how you have been able to make the link between Dungy's son's suicide and Dungy's profession.

That seems like a non-sequitir to me. I have never seen any information confirming that, and I wouldnt expect that anyone could choose to be that classless in media.

He was probably working 24/7 throughout James' childhood, llama - unless he's a Bud Grant throwback. You know how coaches are.

And I never said it was a CAUSAL link to the suicide, I'm inferring - quite reasonably - that his son deserved about 10x more attention than he got from his Dad growing up.

Chris Rock said it best: "If your daughter is on the pole, you pretty much f***ed up as a father." He wasn't entirely joking there. And I'll take it a step further ... if your child is a suicide before age 21, you probably f***ed up as a parent.

So there.

That's just physiologically untrue. You have no medical history. You have nothing but baseless speculation.

Dungy's son was a typical suicide victim...he was a college student away from home.

One of the best families I know lost a son/brother to suicide while he was away at school. In fact, he did it when he came home over the summer. He went to a park and put a shotgun in his mouth. Why did he do it? He made some mistakes at college that cost him his dream career.

I'll reiterate my point, and that's that you are being wreckless with that speculation, especially in light of the absence of any information that would support your position with anything more than extremely circumstantial evidence.

Sorry, cuts ... but I've been thinking this stuff since James commited suicide, but was keeping it to myself. Now, though, the #1 Champion coach in the #1 sport has decided to tell OTHERS how to run their families?!?! No way! I truly feel pain for him and his loss .... but he made his choice. And his choice was 20 hour days since James was a kid. From a distance, it's should be no big surprise James was lacking something ... (and llama's partly right, I don't know the whole story, maybe James was schizophrenic, but they've never said such).

If you wonder what I'm talking about here, just rent "Dead Poets Society," and tell me you think the Dad is blameless and Robin Williams shouldda been fired. That's EXACTLY this dynamic: parents never think it's their fault ... but it usually is.

This whole gay marriage issue will be another hot button issue politicians will love because it polarizes religious people vs non religious people. Two very different groups that they can divide up between them. Meanwhile we skirt the issues that are important. You know the ones that cost money like taking care of our wounded. Paying for a war on Islamic Terrorists. Healthcare people don't have or can't afford. Stopping illegal immigration. The list goes on and on. We are sick of abortion so lets move on to gay marraige. At least they could make it stem cell research as the dividing issue. At least that matters. Who cares what people want to do in their private lives. I just don't see why things need to be changed just because a small percentage of people want to have a gay marraige.

Sometimes parents can be blamed, sometimes they've done all they could. Sometimes the one's that do make that judgment get slapped in the face by their own child's actions. Sometimes obviously bad parents have children that turn out amazingly well, sometimes obviously good parents have children that turn out amazingly bad. I don't believe it's a call any of us can make.
