Just found out we've been feeding the cat one of the recalled foods (Special Kitty pouch). She's been pretty lethargic the last week or so but I thought it was from the flea medication I gave her, now I don't know.

Animal owners frantic on pet food recall (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070317/ap_on_re_us/pet_food_recall_20)
By MATTHEW VERRINDER, Associated Press Writer 39 minutes ago

UNION, N.J. - Pet owners were worried Saturday that the pet food in their cupboards could be deadly after millions of containers of dog and cat food sold at major retailers across North America were recalled.

Menu Foods, the Ontario-based company that produced the pet food, said Saturday it was recalling dog food sold under 48 brands and cat food sold under 40 brands including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba. The food was distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico by major retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.

An unknown number of cats and dogs had suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, the company said.

Many stores that sold the affected brands frantically pulled packages off shelves.

At a Petsmart store in Union, Silviene Grzybowski became worried when the four types of Iams products she buys for her cat, Smokey, had vanished from shelves. The cat was very sick and had not been eating for days, she said.

"The vet told us to buy her her favorite food, but I'm going to call the vet right now," Grzybowski said, looking at an announcement Petsmart had taped to shelves announcing the recall.

A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates was available from the Menu Foods Web site, http://www.menufoods.com/recall. The company also designated two phone numbers that pet owners could call for information — (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708 — but callers kept the lines busy for much of Saturday.

Menu Foods' chief executive and president Paul Henderson told the Associated Press on Friday that the company was still trying to figure out what happened.

He said that the company had received an undisclosed number of owner complaints that dogs and cats were vomiting and suffering kidney failure after eating its products. He estimated that the recall would cost the company, which is mostly owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, an estimated $26 million to $34 million.

Sarah Tuite, a company spokeswoman, has said the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, which has since been dropped for another source. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman Julie Zawisza said it is still too early to determine what could have affected the food. Zawisza added that even if wheat gluten is the source "it doesn't necessarily mean the wheat gluten per se. It could be another substance associated with the wheat gluten."

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches from Dec. 3 to March 6.

In Omaha, Neb., Susan Balvanz said she sometimes feeds her five cats packets of sliced meat and gravy sold by Nutro Products, one of the brands affected.

"I've done so much research on pet food. It didn't surprise me but it scared me all the same," said Balvanz.

She said her 9-year-old cat, Boots, was especially fond of the food but seemed to have lost its appetite in the last few days.

At the Missouri Valley Veterinary Clinic in Bismarck, N.D., veterinarian Jacob Carlson has been referring worried pet owners to the Menu Foods web site.

"We've had a lot of calls," Carlson said, although none of his patients were sick.

The company said it makes pet food for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co.

dry is fine I think...if you click on each recall it will show the specific ones. It appears wet with gravy is the culprit.

We switched foods just 6 months ago to http://www.biljac.com/ and what a difference. Sometimes my dog would eat her food and other times just leave it alone. Very fussy eater. I did some research on dog foods and one thing common to all of them was they were sprayed with oil to enhance the flavor (all except Bil Jac). Sometimes I wonder if our dog would have even eaten that food if not sprayed with oil. It's all mostly filler crap.

Long story short - Bil Jac dog food totally rocks. It's the most all natural dog food I know of and it's not sprayed with all that oil crap. Our dog is very picky about food and she has no problems finishing off the entire bowl now. We used to feed her Nutro and have even put down wet dog food next to the dry Bil Jac and she goes for the Bil Jac every time. She eats less of the food because it's not filled with "fillers" is the best way I can say it. Give it a try, I bet your dog likes it better and you will notice their poop size is smaller and they will poop less often because their not getting stuffed with commercial fillers sprayed with fatty oil just to attract them.

This is what the website says, in a nutshell.

Bil-Jac is unique. Your dog is a carnivore - a meat eating animal. That's why Bil-Jac provides the MOST Fresh Meat protein in his diet. We start by using the highest quality and quantity of fresh chicken, which we source fresh from nearby chicken processors that make the fresh chicken for your dinner table.

From there, we protect the meat's nutrients by using the industry's only slow-cook, low temperature vacuum process. This means the heat sensitive Amino Acids are protected from heat damage that occurs in most "expanded" dog foods. And we add just the right amount of vitamins and minerals after processing, protecting the vitamins from heat damage.

Because of our unique processing, no fat is added to Bil-Jac. Fat occurs naturally with the use of fresh meat ingredients. Most other foods list fat as an added ingredient. At the rendering plant (where our competitors purchase most of their protein sources in powdered meat form-not fresh) the fat is separated from the meal in a high temperature/high pressure process. Not only are the Amino Acids subjected to high heat and pressure, but our competitors also have to spray fat on the food at the very end of their process. The quality of Bil-Jac's fat is superior because of its absolute freshness, because it has not been repeatedly subjected to high heat and pressure, and because it was never separated from the meat in processing.

Not to rag on you but "natural" is the biggest joke of a word in the food industry whether it's human or pets.

I only feed ole' Poopy wet but he can get dry...he's so old his teeth hurt I think...or he's trained me. He's the Methusula of cats. This dumb cat will STARE at me for an hour if I'm out of canned food...I mean for an hour, and he hates me. He's OLD and will be planted "age unknown"...I'm guessing he's around 18.

Anything gravy by that company should be tossed or taken back. Poopy is a pain in the ass but I'm not going to kill him.

I serve my dog nothing but the best. Advanced Pet Diets is what its called and according to my vet it's the best dog food out there. Of course the occaisonal boiled boneless chicken breast is on the menu 1 night a week because she's such a special lady. Then I also give her nothing but the best Brita filtered water because anything less and she may not love me.

My nearly 15 year old beagle/spaniel has been raised on kibbles and bits, grain that falls from the horse feeder, and the occasional table scrap. She's been known to have a few slurps of beer now and again. It's good for her heart/soul.

Yeah, but does it smell like daises now?

If I gave my dogs something that they like even better than what they're eating now I'd have to buy a bigger shovel.
