Gents,
I have been getting many PM's. I am sorry baseball was not included. We did the best we could to include all relevant sports. Baseball was on the list....but didn't make the cut.

I use my other vote for Baseball. WWE should be a choice as well.
Top sports that embody America or top sports today in America?
If its the former it'd be Baseball, Golf, and Football in that order closely followed by Boxing, then Horse Racing and Basketball.
If its the most popular sports in America today it'd be Football, Baseball, Basketball followed by golf and everything else is a distant fifth.
My personal favorites, in order, baseball, football, and world strongest man competitions! ;D

The WWE isn't a sport, its a live stage performance.
You ask me to be called a sport a game needs to be able to produce a real winner based entirely on the competitor's skills without a judging system. Golf is a sport, boxing is a sport because if we took the judges out you can still get to a winner, it'd just be a lot more bloody. Olympic diving, figure skating, etc. are not sports, its a pre-practiced performance that is only wrangled into being competition by subjective opinions.

Golf, Horse Racing and Boxing did not originate in America so I find it hard to believe that they "embody" American sports. They may be popular here, but certainly do not embody our American identity with Sports.
Football, Baseball and Basketball. NASCAR is gaining ground though but auto racing did not originate here so I dont think it can really be an embodiment of American sports.
Most popular, NFL Football and you'd never believe it but Women's figure skating is the second most popular sport in America.

NFL football
Women's figure skating

Of course, the study is a little dated, NASCAR in recent years and Golf have both generated tremendous growth and popularity.

The first thing I ever loved was Baseball. I was born a Husker and then became a Bronco fan, but I will never forget what baseball meant to me. You can say what you want about the sport being hard to watch but to play the game is what makes baseball a great sport. Baseball is summer, baseball is in one word "smell."
Based on that criteria, Basketball is really the only 'home grown' sport.
And it was created by a Canadian.

I think that's one of the best reasons to like any game we played as kids.
