Checking both the measurables and production on this kid, I was impressed. Barnes is 6'1", 240 and ran a blistering 4.40 at the combine, the fastest time of any linebacker there. He also put up the 225 lbs on the BP 31 times, 2nd best among LB's, so this guy has got very solid NFL speed/strength numbers that physically make him look like an Al Wilson type physical specimen. He played defensive end starting in the 3rd game of his juninor year, switching over ther from the LB spot but projects as an OLB in the NFL. Looking at his production is what has me interested though. http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/playerDetail.jsp?yr=2006&org=231&player=42 Barnes finished 3rd in the country in tackles for loss (TFL) with 22 1/2 (19 solos and 7 assisted), and notched 6 sacks in just 12 games. As a junior he had 9 1/2 sacks (8 solo) and was in on 15 1/2 TFL's (14 solo). Barnes is also a 4 year starter and totaled a nasty 57 TFL's in his career...so he's obviously a playmaker who has been doing it over time, not just his senior year...and that speed is big time. In addition to this he blocked punts or field goals every year he played, so he might be the kind of special teams ace we're looking for as well.

Florida International was one of the worst teams in the country, going winless this year. They were the opponents in the infamous brawl with U of Miami. This school played some good competition though. Along with Miami, they faced Maryland, South Florida and Alabama. One negative...his overall tackle numbers for a LB don't seem that high, but he was young when he started...he was in on 69 tackles (42 solo) from the DE spot which is great production for a D-line guy but against top competiton he dropped off. That might be because the D-line probably got pulverized and I imagine he faced a lot of double teams with 300 pounders on him.

I've seen him listed as high as a 2nd rounder. Anybody seen this kid play? I'm thinking with that speed and play making ability he might be a good replacement for Ian Gold on the weak side and he's about 20 pounds heavier. Would he make a good 2nd or 3rd round pickup for us? Everyone talks about whether Elvis is to small for an every down DE but part of the problem with that is certainly the fact that Gold right behind him is safety sized. Check out the FIU report on his career...note that he picked FIU over Miami, Michigan State and LSU...so big schools obviously wanted him.

Here's what Todd Mcshay recently wrote,

Antwan Barnes (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfldraft/draft/tracker/player?draftyear=2007&id=11383), OLB, Florida International
The 6-foot, 240-pound former defensive end ran the fastest 10-yard split of the 33 linebackers who ran at the combine. He also turned heads with a 35-inch vertical leap and 31 reps of the 225-pound bench press. All of a sudden, his 22 career sacks at FIU carry greater weight with NFL scouts. Once considered a fringe late-round prospect, Barnes should now expect to hear his name called early on Day 2 of the draft

So he's slotting at this point somewhere betweenthe 2nd and 4th rounds it sounds like. If anyone has any video footage I'd like to see it.

Drafted him in the OM mock draft, really hope the Broncos find a way to get him. His ball skills impressed scouts at his pro day as well, so there isn't much question that he should be able to transition back to OLB.

I don't think I'd want to take him in round 2, but I'd start to consider him with our late 3rd, and if he was there at our early 6th it wouldn't be a question.

I would love a guy like this if it ment we could ship gold out of town. the thing about Gold is he is a saftey playing linebacker. He puts the DE in front of him in a tuff spot because he dosnt have the size or strength to really shut down the run. he is wicked fast and he used to hit but unless he is in coverage or teeing someone up he tends to dissapear.

How bout giving Cameron Vaughn a chance? He looked really well last year in pre-season. And he's gotta year in the system under his belt.
