Massachusetts Wants Immigration Detainees Freed

BOSTON — The head of Massachusetts' social services on Monday called for the release of about 20 factory workers arrested in an immigration raid, saying many have children with no one else to care for them.
They were among the 361 people taken into custody following the raid March 6 at a Michael Bianco Inc. factory that makes equipment and apparel for the U.S. military.
Many of the suspected illegal immigrants were shipped to detention centers in Texas before a federal judge ordered the rest to remain in Massachusetts because advocates said the raid created a "humanitarian crisis."
Commissioner Harry Spence was among three-dozen state Department of Social Services workers who traveled to Texas during the weekend to interview more than 200 detainees.
The department workers returned to Massachusetts on Monday after recommending the return of 21 detainees the day before, Spence said. Immigration officials in Texas were releasing nine of those 21, Russ Knocke, spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security in Washington, D.C., said Monday.
Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Massachusetts, sent a letter Monday to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff asking that all detainees be returned to Massachusetts for supervised release.
Kennedy also asked Chertoff to meet with him and other members of the state's congressional delegation this week.
In response to Kennedy's request, Knocke said the department has to enforce the law and added that at least 20 percent of the immigrants snared in the raid had already received deportation orders.
"We have to enforce the law and we will continue to do so in an aggressive and sensible way," Knocke said. "Not enforcing the law is not an option."
(BABronco: Yay! never heard of him before but I like what he is saying.)
Spence said the detainees he wants released have children ages 2 to 16, and a few of the children had medical conditions that required special care, including one child that required a feeding tube. All were believed to be born in the United States and therefore are U.S. citizens. (BABronco: Put the kids up for adoption; unless they have a major illness, ship the parents back to Mexico.)
Knocke, however, said that only two of the immigrants Spence has requested returned are primary caregivers.
Along with the mothers being held, Spence said the group of 20 included a woman suffering from cancer and a 17-year-old boy. Knocke said the teenager is 18.(BABronco: Back across the border you go. GIVE EM THE BOOT!)
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Marc Raimondi said the agency was reviewing the requests.
He said federal authorities previously had released at least 60 suspected illegal immigrants, mostly because they needed to care for their children.
(BABronco: Boo! So let me get this right. If you break the law have a kid over here, who is rightfully an American citizen, you also become untouchable?)
"My information is there's still not a child left in a risky or inappropriate situation," Raimondi said.
In the days following the raid in New Bedford, a 7-month-old child was hospitalized for dehydration because the breast-feeding infant refused to drink formula and the mother was in custody for two nights. Another mother was located in Texas after her 7-year-old child called a hot line state officials created to reunite families.
But Spence said worries that some children may still fall through the cracks have diminished.
"I think that worry is very, very significantly narrowed," he said.
U.S. District Judge Richard Stearns set a Tuesday deadline for DSS and immigration authorities to report the status of any unresolved cases involving children. Stearns also said he would consider whether he has jurisdiction over the detainees being held outside Massachusetts.

This is a travesty that these dishonest illegals are allowed to push and pull at our government workers. I hope they are all deportrf along with their illegal children.

Their kids already have a better life. They were born here, they are legal citizens. Their parents are illegal, thus they should be punished, and rightfully so. I have a family, but I'm only a teen. Since you have a family and several kids, ask yourself this: do you want your kids to be paying for illegals to live here for their entire lives? Illegals are a huge strain on the economy. It sucks that family gets separated but the kids will have a better life than they would have south of the border and the parent gets punished for breaking the law.

You'd commit a crime for your kids? That would be about the dumbest thing you could do...because eventually you'd get caught. Then your kids wouldn't have a provider either. These are the tough choices...but those kids should be deported with their criminal parents.

spare me the drama , if I lived in Mexico , and I could support my family , buy swimming the river or jumping a fence ? answer your own question
i liken it to playing the lottery - illegals take a risk by coming here and if they don't get caught (jackpot) they are lucky ... but if they get caught is it someone else's fault the illegals decided to play the lottery?
then if/when families get split up they act like they are victims, the "who me?" mentality ...
tonight on one program it was stated that 55,000 illegals are housed in our prisons. they committed over 700,000 crimes to be put there, which means they AVERAGE about 11.5 crimes EACH ... of course, they are the victims in this, too, right?

Problem with that senario is the rat is not a human being governed by laws.
They have both broke the law...the should both pay the consequences

good point, GB ... if my family lived in poverty and i resorted to stealing to support my family and i got caught, i wouldn't get any "amnesty" for that - i'd be in jail. sure, some would pity me, but i intentionally broke the law, regardless of how noble it was.

I would not jump the fence or swim the river Spider....I wouldn't have kids and not be able to support them legally.

people need to stop having kids beyond their means ... bring back "zero population." one thing i don't understand is why people in poverty have more kids than those who are more affluent (i'm in the middle). that seems backwards to me.

i have 6 internationally adopted siblings. they came here, jumped through all of the hoops, and are productive citizens. they didn't drop out of school, steal other people's identities, and are proud (not resentful) to be Americans.
btw, i don't support abortion, but you probably already know that about me :)

spider - i have a legit question for you ... and i know you'll be honest ...
what if someone came into your house, stole your food, some of your belongings, and stayed there as an unwelcome guest without asking and did so posing as someone else?
yes, it's a loaded question, but that's how i view immigration. perhaps if we took over mexico and added it as a U.S. territory, they could have a fighting chance at making their country appealing enough to entice their citizens to stay there.

Separation never good? I disagree. Imagin your in a POS country, which is being invaded. Americans are sending in evacuation copters to pick up some of our boys and some civilians. You are on the roof of your apartment building and you have your child in your arms. The pilot says that there is only room for one. There are crowds all around you still trying to get in... and you offer up your kid to the copter. They take him and then depart.
This separation (sending the parents back across the border) is not as glorious as the example above, but it is just. It's the law. It will be good for the child.

if I was mexican I'd run across the border, I just wouldn't join the bleating idiots who scream at the rest of the population for not liking mass immigration.
the funny thing about all this is the biggest effect immigration has on america is it drives down the wages of the lower classes. especially immigration as large as the semi failed state of mexico is now offering us.

exactly - there were "immigration protests" here ... you can imagine how many of them were NOT flying the U.S. flag ... funny how people forget how bad their country was, enough so that it made them flee to another country yet continue to support it moreso than the country that is helping them and their family survive.

That's all well and good, Spide.....but it's still ILLEGAL. When should the rule of law hold up?
And why should their problems become our problems?
Besides, every day I'm lead to believe that the U.S. is such a horrible place.....ship them off to the Euro trash countries.....
