Hey all, its that time of year again. The FIFTH annual Orangemane NCAA brackets are ready to go again for March Madness!
For those interested, we use an on-line bracket group set up for us 'Mane' folks over at Sportsline.com and its free to sign up and play!
Its free again and is for bragging rights here on the board as well as impressing all your peers with your awesome picking skills ;)
As always, use the Sportsline bracket page to make your bracket selections. Once the tournament starts, you will be able to track your results LIVE!
Last year's big winner was Thomas Smith with an impressive 97 out of 177 possible points. Now, just one thought... Who was Thomas Smith? Be sure to use your Mane names so you can get proper credit people!!!
Second place went to Dean Peros with 95 points, Third Place went to the 2x previous champ Darkhawk24 and lest we forget,
DEAD LAST PLACE went to our own Casey Conklin with a miserable 41 out of 177 total points (A new record of futility!!!) Ha!
So be sure to set up an account with sportsline and join the group! Make sure to set your name to match your Orange Mane name so we all know who to laugh at/hide from when the games get started.
Scoring for this year will be based on a
-First Round: 1 point per correct guess
-Second Round: 3 points
-Third Round: 5 points
-Fourth Round: 7 points
-Semifinals: 9 points
-Finals: 11 points

I had a problem with this year's choices. You'll notice that more often than not one conference is able to get two teams into the Final Four but there just aren't many good fits for that this year. Do you trust a wounded Wisconsin to get through four games? Do you think any SEC or Big XII school is capable or joining Florida or Kansas? Besides North Carolina, what other ACC school could run the table? I like Oregon and UCLA but the Pac 10 is usually exposed for the pretenders they are come Tourney Time.
So, I forced Pitt to go further than sense tells me they should so they can join Georgetown in the Final Four along with Ohio State and Florida.
We'll see if this hunch pays off or if another twosome makes it to Atlanta.

I think it has been the past 8 years that 2 teams from one conferance have made the final four. This year didn't seem that tough to me, Big 12- Kansas & Texas A&M could both get there and not suprise anyone. A&M gets the weakest 2 seed imo in Memphis- It doesn;t really matter though since UNC is taking it all this year, depth will win out in the end.....

Great teams don't worry about who they play........
I would be more concerned about that Niagara team you are going to have to face.....They won't be a cakewalk, I was shocked to see them in the play in game- started the sesason 1-6 w/ 6 players suspended they finished 21-5 and have won 11 in a row. Not saying that Niagara will win, but they will give you boys a game for a while.

The problem with this year is that I didn't see any team that didn't have clear cut weaknesses that could easily be exploited. Typically there is one or two teams that are just good. This year, every number one team has had some problems along the way. I thought NC was great this year. I thought they would go all the way, but they didn't fair well near the end and had some upsets. That's why I couldn't put them in through the end.

I know I shudder when I look at game matchups and see one team finished the season 5-5 in their last ten games and the other finished 6-4 and thinking "this tournament is just a bad joke". The big conferences get too many teams in.

Yeah. But then, they shut his ass down in second halves and blank him in OT.
KUs biggest weakness has to be free throw shooting. Their early and mid season free throws were horrible, though they have come around here lately. Id say another of their main weaknesses is being up big and then taking it for granted and taking poor shot selections until they realize the other team is catching up or has caught up.
The "experts" say because KU has no one single go-to guy that this is a weakness, but really its a HUGE strength. Because you just never know from night to night who you gotta watch out for, and no team in the country can effectively gaurd 5 guys that can kill you multiple ways.
Free throw shooting though, that would be my guess as to what does them in if they lose in the tourney.

While Nova over UK doesnt seem like a big upset, considering the fact that UK never loses in the first round it would be at least an upset.
Also, I like Winthrop over ND in round 1. ND is playing really good basketball down the stretch but I think Winthrop is a damn fine team that got shafted at seeding time. Ive seen them play twice this year which isnt much but it was enough to know that the teams they played looked like high schoolers and they looked like NBA all stars.
I like Ga Tech over UNLV and my biggest stunner, Im taking ORU over Washington State who is seeded about 6 spots too high at #3.

First off, I think it would be ignorant to not have UCLA making the final four. Once again they can make it all the way through to the final four without leaving the state of California. This was key for them last year, and I think it will help once again.
Also, I think everyone is severely underrating Memphis. They see a team from what has essentially become a mid-major conference and think they can't play. Well this team is a better team than the Tigers who lost to the Bruins in California in the Elite Eight last year. Last year we had Rodney Carney, Shawne Williams, and Darius Washington and some other guys. The two first round picks both tried to be a one-man show and D-Wash was far too much of a ball hog for a PG. This year we actually have a squad that plays like a team. Andre Allen and Antonio Anderson are much better at distributing the ball than D-Wash and Allen. Chris Douglas-Roberts is a better defender and a much mroe consistent scorer than Rodney Carney or Shawne Williams. Having Jeremy Hunt back on the team as an elite shooting guard who can defend is an improvement over last year's team. Dozier is long, rangy guy at forward who can score. And Joey Dorsey is an absolute beast in the paint. He has the athleticism of Rodney Carney with a good 3 or 4 inches. He is very well built and at 6-9 / 6-10 with his leaping ability can guard any big man in the country (That means you, Greg Oden). Add in guys like Willie Kemp and Kareem Cooper, and you've got a team capable of going all the way.

Tips for Filling in Your Bracket, for dummies V.1
1. Pick whichever team's name sounds more familiar. For example, unless you bleed yellowish-orange and blue, you're probably not too familiar with Oral Roberts University. (We're not.) Therefore, you go with Washington St., which actually has a state named after it. (Or is it the other way around?)
2. Compare mascots. If you obviously prefer dogs over cats, then pick the college with the multicolored dog. If you have no preference, imagine the two mascots in a fierce battle and pick the one that would come out on top. For example, what if the Florida Gators duked it out with the Jackson St. Tigers?
3. Pay attention to the rankings. As much as you want to be the only one in your league to pick 11th-ranked Winthrop to win the whole damned tourney, keep in mind they share the same region as Florida, Notre Dame, Oregon, and Wisconsin. Don't be an idiot, seriously.
4. Pick upsets. Here's the exception to tip three. Everyone knows that the higher-ranked team will not always beat the lower-ranked team, and some giant killer (term used to refer to overachieving underdogs) will crawl its way into the later rounds. Playing personal biases and the other tips, select a few likely upsets in the early rounds. You'll probably get smirked at when you miss a majority of them, but you'll certainly look like an "expert bracketologist" come Butler's semi-final win.
5. Ask around. Get a feel for which teams and upsets your fellow leaguemates are selecting, and jump on the bandwagon. This is one game where blending in is sometimes actually a good thing.
6. Pick by color (also known as the "fashion pick"). Screw expert analysis. If you're sick of watching white jerseys, go for Florida's blue and orange combo. Or Texas orange.
7. Pick a number, not any number. Most leagues require you to predict the final score of the championship game (or a point total) as a tiebreaker. In the event you actually make it that far with these tips, which the odds we place between Brett Favre retiring and Lions GM Matt Millen firing himself, actually put some thought into this: if your bracket totally crashes down in flames and you guess the score on the spot, you have at least some psychic power to brag about. Keep in mind that each team can score somewhere between 60-90 points, although Championship games mostly run a little high.

I literally have not watched one college basketball game, start to finish, this year. And if you combined all the college basketball I've watched all year, I bet it'd be less than two hours.
So, the moral of the story is that anyone I beat really, really sucks.
Then again, when we would do this for our employees, we had some years where the winners were random women who never watched games in their lives. We "experts" that watched college basketball every night really looked like brainiacs.

I can't tell you how many times I went back and forth on that game while making my picks.
Oh well, I did the same thing with Old D and Butler and finally ended up with Butler... I guess I'll live w/a 50/50 split.
It's actually better for me that Duke lost b/c a lot of people had them going to the Quarters, and I did not.
I can't remember what it's been like in years past (too much beer, and I've slept A LOT since then!) but there seems to be an awful lot of different championship teams, or so our picks would indicate. North Carolina (my team!) has the most votes it appears (11). Ohio St. (my pick) has a bunch as well (10). But, I've seen a ton of different teams listed. Texas has a few, Texas A&M, Kansas, UCLA, Floriduh, and Georgetown all have votes and I understand why. I can even go along with Memphis receiving one person's vote (of confidence). But who in the he!! would vote for Arizona? Come forth and speak... you have to be a big time homer to pick'em!
I'll route for NortCackaLacky the whole tourney and you better believe I'll be pulling for them to beat up on the *uckeyes, but at the end of the day I just don't see them getting past OSU again. With Oden on the court I think they're a different ball team and I don't think Carolina can beat them again. Hopefully somebody else knocks them off and gives Carolina a cleaner path, but I don't see it happening. OSU is playing some of the best ball in the nation right now. As are Florida, Kansas, Georgetown, Memphis, and YEP... TEXAS. Should be a great tourney. Kevin Durant may be a bean pole, but the dude can flat out ball!
Last but not least... DUCK ***E!

Even though I took five losses, only one was a team I picked to win this weekend so I'm still in decent shape. In fact, practically everyone is. That actually makes me a bit nervous about Friday because I didn't forecast many upsets.

Opening day for the NCAA Tournament.
Game/Upset of the day:
West Region:
#11 Virginia Commonwealth 79
#6 Duke 77
Great game with about as good as an ending as you can hope for. This thriller kept me on the edge of my seat during the first upset of the tournament. At one point, in the first half VCU was down 22-9. Great perimeter shooting and defense brought VCU back. During the final minutes there were several lead changes and ties. Also a rough game, as four Duke players had to leave the game because of bleeding. Scary moment late in the game when Duke guard Scheyer was unintentionally hit by a VCU player drove to the basket and bled from the eye. This looked like a follow through hit a la Kobe, but fortunately Scheyer was fine and able to return to the game. Congratulations to the rams and first year coach Anthony Grant to pull off the upset against the Blue Devils, who had a disappointing season. This is the first time the Blue Devils have fallen in the first round, and this is the lowest they had been seeded in quite a while. This also breaks the streak of Sweet 16 appearances at 9, what was the nations longest active streak.
Stat of the day:
In an extremely low scoring game between #9 Michigan State 61 and #8 Marquette 49, the Golden Eagles failed to score until 10:46 remaining in the first quarter. Not a big deal, but I wanted to see Dominic James lead his team into the Sweet 16.
Also:
#2 UCLA 70
#15 Weber State 42
UCLA dominated Weber (pronounced wee-bur) State, Head Coach Ben Howland's alma mater as expected. Nice bounce back after a disappointing loss to mediocre Yoo-Dub in the regular season finale and not much better Golden Bears in their opening game in the PAC-10 tournament. Look for Bruins to make a deep run in the tournament.
Collison's mildly sprained ankle seemed fine and he played at full throttle against the Wildcats.
My bracket:
As of 7:40, my bracket is pretty good. Only misses so far are Duke and Marquette.
99th Percentile in all of Yahoo! Tournament Pick'em Brackets.
Not too shabby.
Buzz of the day:
Jeff (Cleveland): I think I my bracket is busted already. That FAMU/Niagara game killed me.
Site of the day: (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/ncaatourney07/news/story?page=animations0314)
ESPN site offers animations and explanations of key plays for Florida, North Carolina, UCLA, and Wisconsin. Interesting, and give you something to watch for while watching their games.
What to watch right now (8:00 PM PST):
17:47 2nd Half
(10)Gonzaga (http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/clubhouse?teamId=2250) 35

Always pay attention to the Time Zone Advantage. You take a long flight and then screw up your body rythyms. If one team has to do that and the other one doesn't, that's a huge advantage.

Pretty sure Julian Wright is coming back. He is going to graduate in 3 years and this is year 2. He promised his mom he would graduate. Not sure about Rush but he kinda fell off the radar this year (or was overshadowed by other big names like Durant, Law, Boggan in the Big 12 alone). Chalmers should come back and I think Sherron Collins will too. If all four of those guys come back I'll be stoked.

So, I looked it up to see how well A&M does in road games. They beat Kansas on the road but, otherwise, not impressed. Lost at Texas. Lost at Texas Tech. Lost at LSU and UCLA back in December.
While Louisville won't technically be a road game, I'm guessing 80% of the crowd will be Louisville fans and they showed during the Stanford game that they don't sit on their hands.
The irony is that if A&M beats Louisville, they get the home cooking advantage the following week down in San Antonio. But first, they have to beat Rick Pitino.

That's actually my theory, as well. I still feel good about a lot of the second round matchups. I had a feeling that there weren't going to be a lot of upsets in the first round, but I didn't go with my feeling. I tried to force a few upsets that never happened...

Ditto. I agree with STG (and I think its true of most players) that the losses so far did not do a great deal of harm to their bracket projections. 14 of my Sweet 16 candidates are still in play (and I meant to switch Georgia Tech too) so I could get well in a hurry if things break right.
So the real contest becomes who handles the second and third rounds the best. Will we see upsets or will we see the seeds stay true to form?
I gotta say there are some teams that I have going deeper (Pitt, Oregon, S. Illinois, Memphis) who didn't impress me much and I hope they show better.
I'm still pissed over the Illinois-Va. Tech game.
