View Full Version : Still Plenty of Cap Space

Not counting the signings of Graham and quarterback Pat- rick Ramsey this week, Denver was left with a healthy $8.2 million in cap room without having to release any players.

Denver probably will need $3 million to $4 million of that space to sign its six-player draft class, barring any compensatory picks it's awarded or future deals that increase the total number of selections. The team's half-dozen picks currently are No. 21 (first round); 56 (second); 70 (third, from Washington); 86 (third); 162 (sixth, from Detroit); and 215 (seventh

If there is any kind of d-lineman available we need to bring them in for an interview, and I would like to look at K Hamlin or Deon Grant (not sure if he signed with Seattle though).

The Seahawks signed D. Grant to a contract on Friday.

I think Broncos will try and wait for some bargains now.

It's going to be interesting to find out what they had to do to clear off all this space. I think we should stop now and wait to see what happens in the draft, so we have some flexibility when the right move comes along rther than just signing players who won't be more than backups.

It's going to be interesting to find out what they had to do to clear off all this space.

Gerard Warren restructured. Opened up $2.6 million in cap space.

Champ Bailey restructured. Opened up $3.6 million in cap space.

Rod Smith took a pay cut. Opened up $5 million in cap space.

See if a trade can be worked out for Charles Grant!

So we've actially $5.7m in space prior to adding Ramsey. Graham's 2007 cap charge is $2.8m so reduces that $8.2m by $2.5m.

Great job Rod.

Eddie Mac! Any idea of our free agents going into 2008? I would love to use some of that cap room to lock up some of our younger players like Fox who'll be a FA during the season if the continues to play well instead of waiting for next offseason.

He listed next years free agents in post 53 on this thread.

Spring they may well wait to see how he performs and his attitude. I'm sure the front office weren't too enheartened with the press specualtion regarding his favourtism towards the Redskins. At this point why would they give him a ton of money up front then find out he still wants to go thus leaving a massive cap hit whenever he's traded or better still finding out Foxworth is better??? Remember that our CB's 2-4 are all on the market next year whether UFA's or RFA's somehow I dont see us keeping all 4 but you never know and as Shanny always says you never have enough corners.

AFAIK he, Paymah, Cox, Myers, Pears and Abdullah will be RFA's/ERFA's so we'll have 1st dabs on all of them, but IMO if there's cap room left over this year I'd give Fox some money up front in terms of base salary with any extension much like we did with Veal and Webster when we extended both in December after Sauerbrun was cut.

I dont know if it has been posted anywhere but Grant Winstrom was cut the other day. Not stating I want him, he never has realy impressed me. Just thought this would be a decent place for the news, if there is a thread well I am hung over and to lazy to search at this time.

Here's my thinking EMc:
1. He's been an all pro - those don't grow on trees, if you get one keep him.
2. I like the combo of Bailey, Bly and Foxworth a whole lot better than Bailey, Foxworth and Paymah.
3. A player under contract is all about "control". If we don't sign him, he walks as a FA next year, we get nada. If we sign him and he wants to be traded, then we have control over where he goes and receive compensation for him.
4. I'd like to see a "contract satisfied" Bly - in the clubhouse and on the field he would be a positive factor, not a negative one.

Obviously I think he is a great addition and would love for him to be part of the team for a long time.

I'm thinking that money get spent on depth at OT, DL and maybe S. No big names, just guys that can come in and contribute in case of injuries.

Well if the team talks to Bly and he does in fact want to be here like the Bailey article stated, then I think we should extend him atleast a year and then more if his play warrants it. There's no reason to think he's going to have a dropoff in production, so if he is happy, why not resign him?

Franchise tag him and if he goes somewhere we get something!

Like Adam Meadows last year? Bring somebody in during camps after seeing how the depth is. Obviously they wouldn't light the world on fire if they're out of football but could provide depth if the team feels a position is lacking.

How come nobody has mentioned bringing in Brandon Stokley? He'd be a great #3 and probably wouldn't cost too much.

Yes, like Meadows, but hopefully healthier. There are a couple of decent tackles still floating around out there. Colombo is looking for a team. He was a beast in college, but I haven't followed him since.

neh, he was injured twice last year and I think the team is really high on Domenik Hixon, we still have Rod and Morgan. Stokley would be a little too expensive IMO considering he might not be #3. With the WRs in this draft, no need to spend excessively on FA WRs.

Because our #3 receiver just took a ten million dollar pay cut to stay here.

If Bates can generate the pressure he has in the past, the need for a high priced corner goes down, remember we won a superbowl with Darrien Gorden! Our CB's covered guys for 5-10 seconds some times, a little pressure would have went a long ways. Just a thought

We also still have Kircus and Clark as well. Clark might not be more than an STer, but Kircus had some good chemistry with Cutler in preseason and made some regular season plays as well.

Staley wouldn't be our #3, thats a battle between Marshall and Rod for #2/3 work that'll probably go on all season. He'd be competing with Kircus and Hixon for #4 work, not worth adding more fuel to that fire when Morgan is already a decent 3rd competitor, Clark is an ok dark horse, and the second day of the draft is going to be ripe with athletically gifted WR projects.

Good to see we have some breathing room. Has there been anything said about Walker's deal being overhauled? Warren's, Bailey's, and Rod's have all made news, I'd think Walker's would as well. Maybe it was guaranteed but I doubt it as the sentiment at the time he signed it was the Broncos had it as an escape clause in case Walker's knee was shot. I'm guessing that was where the Kerney money was going to come from but now that we don't need it they'd just as soon pay him and enjoy a largely subsidized Walker for the next five years.

The market has pretty much been picked clean, I'd rather see them wait to see if someone unexpected becomes available rather than spread it around over multiple players.

I read that you guys gained $1,175,718 in 'likely to be earned' incentives that weren't reached last year. We lost $2.6 million, and the underachieving queefs gained $8,559,275.

The real question now is who the June 1st cuts are going to be. I think we're best off standing pat at the moment and seeing if any talent becomes available then.

And none of the three teams won anything other than SD won AFC West which is just a banner.

So much for the gloom and doom by the media. Denver has been more active than any team in the NFL in FA.

My favorite part of the offseason is Bob telling us that Parker is "really going to break out this year. No, seriously!"

He's should put the weed down.
