Kind of sad. I loved Boston in high school. I remember when Third Stage was released - I've never looked forward to an album that much.

Boston lead singer found dead in his home
POSTED: 10:38 p.m. EST, March 9, 2007
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Brad Delp, the lead singer of the 1970s and '80s rock band Boston was found dead at his home in southern New Hampshire on Friday, local police said.
Delp, 55, apparently was home alone and there was no indication of foul play, Atkinson, New Hampshire, police said.
With Delp's big, high-register voice, Boston scored hits with "More Than a Feeling," "Long Time," and "Peace of Mind."
The band's popularity peaked in the late 1970s, but it remained active off and on, producing its last album "Corporate America" in 2002.
Delp was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and bought his first guitar at age 13 after seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, according to his Web site. Since 1994, he spent his spare time working in a tribute band called Beatle Juice, the band's Web site said.
The band's Web site carried a statement, "We've just lost the nicest guy in rock and roll."

It's a nostalgia thing for me. They released Don't Look Back in 1978, when I was nine. I started listening to them a few years later, and literally wore out the cassettes of both their debut album (Boston) and Don't Look Back. There was always talk about how they had a third album. But they were all fighting with each other, so it never got released. Finally, in 1986 - my junior year in high school - they released Third Stage.
I'll never forget - I was driving with four of my buddies up to Cripple Creek to see a basketball game when the first single, Amanda, came on the radio. It was like a religious fanatic reading the long lost 67th book of the Bible. We were all talking (shouting, more like), and the DJ on KBPI says, "Here's a sneak preview of the new Boston album." Everybody immediately shut up, and no one breathed until it was over. It was the greatest song I ever heard. Now I hear it, and it's cheesy. But then, the anticipation made it great for us. A few weeks later, the album was released, and I bought it as soon as the store opened.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I thought I'd post this video, too. When I was sixteen, my buddy and I used to clean Little People's Landing - a daycare out on Wadsworth and Chatfield. He had this girl he liked, and he'd play this song over and over and over and over, bemoaning his unrequited love. I'm embarrassed for him now that I think about it.

Boston was the very first LP I ever bought. I still like it a lot. As everyone knows, it went on to be one of the more remarkable debuts in Rock and even though it was pounded into the ground ad infinitium in subsequent years and was pretty much the poster album of corporate rock, I never really tired of it. A true rarity.
I didn't really think too much of Don't Look Back...even at 12 yrs. old I knew it was a rehash. It's fairly safe to say that the resulting momentum damage of the weird and very long layoff between that album and Third Stage was crippling....subsequent releases cemented the fact that the band blew it's wad on the first album.......sadly, that happens.
Sorry to hear of Delp's passing.....too bad he never took that voice into a solo career (unless you count RTZ...which I sorta remember vaguely, but I couldn't tell you anything about it now)... R.I.P.

Boston was my favorite band of all time. Their music would always pick me up and take me places I'd never been. I finally seen them in concert at Deer Creek in Indy several years ago. Wow, total power is all I can say. It just never stopped! They cranked out one ballad after another. Some of my fondest memories are of me, my car, my stereo, my falsetto and Boston cranked up going down the highway of life. This is the first death of a rock singer that I can truely say I am deeply saddend. All the others I had the feeling of "Oh well, life goes on and someon will take their place". Brad was truly one of a kind.

Bum, I know you do the Neil Diamond crooner type thing but for the life of me I just can't picture you doing a falsetto voice like that......you just have to touch off some of those "screaming for vengence" type howls the next time we run into each other...I just have a hard time believing it otherwise.

Its' a little more alternative than the Boston Albums but you can still hear the roots of what made Boston so great. Journey(Lights etc.), Elton John(Bennie and the Jets), Frankie Valley & the 4 Seasons(Rag Doll, Sherry, Dec "63" those are the ones I like to do the best. My falsetto is either there or it isn't. I have nights where I can sing it all nite long and the next time I lose it after one song. I've had it break up right in the middle of a song(not a pretty site). Maybe next year if we can all make it to any of the 3 Bronco games at either Indy, Detroit(Ugh) or Chicago we can find a karaoke bar. Haven't been doing it much lately as I have been sooooooooo busy. Any chance you and Sassy will be making it to the game in NY next year? I know Brian was talking about it a while back.
BTW: FYI I have tried to do several Boston songs and I can't do it. Brads voice is so unique and powerful it cannot be duplicated. The only song I have been able to come close to singing is "Man I'll never be"

How odd is that that he was in one of the 70's most popular and famous bands and then has played in a Beatles tribute band since 1994.
Boston would be a band that probably has it's own tribute bands out there.

If you get me beyond drunk, I'll do the karaoke thing...but I'll clear the room shouting along to Grand Funk Railroad's "Some Kind Of Wonderful" as well, so it's not really advised Ha!
And yes...the last time we discussed it, we are planning on catching that game in NYC next season, provided we get some help from Brian as far as airport transportation, tickets and the like goes. It's quite a ways off, but as of right now, it's condition green.

This is the first I heard of it and I am crushed. Those guys were such a local phenomenon it's good to hear that most of you knew and loved their music.
Personally, I don't think a band has ever had a better debut album....one that you played both sides of, all the way through without ever wanting to skip a song because it was a filler.
Hogan, you may be the only one that remembers 1984's Orion the Hunter tune "So you ran". That was Barry Goudreau's project that included Brad Delp.
Just this week a high school buddy of mine sent me this link. Aparently Barry Goudreau and Sib Hashian are still playing together (with billionaire Ernie Boch Jr. whose dad owned many car dealerships).

I don't know if anyone here was at, or remembers ColoradoSunday at Mile High. There were like 6 bands and I was deep in the middle of the mob. Been so long ago...but Boston was just awesome...I have heard they used some computer audio but man, talk about on key...Last act were the Stones and Mick threw roses into the crowd from a giant crane or somethiing...right over us...even the Doobie Brothers were there. I even hooked up with a super cute HS chick there...there were 3 we partied with along with sheese, I would guess at least 30K. It was like Woodstock in a bowl. Pleasantly exausting. I think Foghat was there too. It was something else. Kinda fuzzy to remember it all, but man, what a party. Not a bit of trouble either.
Great band, Boston, and a unique yet somehow familiar sound. Very harmonic unlike so much of the crap out now. Everybody had that album back in the age of vinyl.

The only time I saw them was prior to the Patriots/Titans "ice bowl" playoff game when it was 4 degrees with a windchill of 30 below. Beers were freezing before you could drink them. I remember hearing they were going to play before the game but thought that for sure they would cancel. Sure enough they played in the endzone "just another band out of Boston ect..." and I remember thinking this is ridiculous that they are doing this. They weren't wearing any heavy cold weather gear and they looked so cold. I can't imagine trying to play the guitar in that cold. They also sang the national anthem.

I remember it ... and so did Scholz. Scholz in a genius, but he was also vindictive.
The other members wanted to put out albums and tour, but it took Scholz - the brains behind the band - 9 years to finish "Third Stage." During this time, the other members, led by guitarist Barry Goudreau, formed a separate band (mighta been OTH), and there were lawsuits between the label, Goudreau and Scholz. Scholz won in the end, controlling the band and its name, and he accepted Delp back into his sphere. But Sib Hashian, Fran Sheehan and especially Goudreau were out for good. Delp left to join them in about 1990.
When Scholz released "Boston's Greatest Hits" in about 95 or 96, he pointedly omitted any songs written by any of the other guys - keeping them from songwriter royalties. He included two separate versions of a forgettable song he wrote and dedicated to the 12-Step Alcoholics Anonymous program ... but left out "Hitchin' a Ride."
He realy was the brains behind Boston ... he was an audio engineering inventor who created some remarkable things - including among others the "Rockman," an advanced compression/distortion unit for guitars - the unit that gave the Boston guitars that unmistakeable sound.

That's just the portable version .... they made rack-mount and footpedal versions as well. I had the rack-mounted version ... the sustain/chorus II setting was literally infinite sustain.
These inventions (though the text above says Goudreau was partly responsible) were ahead of their time, and were so futuristic sounding, that Scholz was prompted to include the disclaimer on the debut album: "No synthesizers or computers are used on this album."
Brad Delp's voice probably was another reason for the disclaimer. The sonically neo-realistic guitar harmonies made possible by his inventions were curiously bookended by Delp's amazing harmonies - as many as 10 parts on a single song. Sang like a bird, he did. RIP.

You are absolutely correct. The sound is too perfect for a live show and indistinguishable from the album.
It is the studio recording dubbed over the live video. They did a remarkable job synching the audio & video. There's a couple parts though, where the guitarists fretwork doesn't quite match the audio.

It's so funny when - after Delp 'sings' the first line - he looks over at Scholz who (presumably ;D) belts out a spot-on Brad Delp answer phrase in perfect pitch. :~ohyah!: ROFL! Hilarious!
I counted at least six voice tracks there ... and that was definitely the album version ... did they actually have the cajones to simply play their studio recording live?! At least U2 (and Ashlee Simpson) use some recorded tracks, and some live. I once heard that Van Halen's backup singers sang backstage. I thought it was true after I saw them live and witnessed Eddie and the bass player clumsily moving their jaws, implausibly, 36 inches away from the microphone. To be honest, I think Van Halen was lip-synching too back then ... nobody was backstage, the backup vocals were too good ... and there was rhythm guitar :ouwknow: ??? ... at least Eddie soloed and David Lee sang live.
Best way to tell is - look for headphones on the drummer. They need to hear the "click track" to keep in sync with the pre-recorded parts.

Family: Rocker Brad Delp's death was suicide.
By Associated Press Writer | March 14, 2007
CONCORD, N.H. --The family of Brad Delp, the lead singer for the band Boston, said Wednesday his death was a suicide.
"He was a man who gave all he had to give to everyone around him, whether family, friends, fans or strangers," the family said in a statement relayed by police. "He gave as long as he could, as best he could, and he was very tired. We take comfort in knowing that he is now, at last, at peace."
Delp, 55, died Friday at his Atkinson home. Police have said his fiancee, Pamela Sullivan, found him.
Toxicology tests by the state medical examiner's office showed that Delp committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning, said Lt. William Baldwin. Delp also left two notes taped to a door and letters to his family and Sullivan.
Baldwin said police do not know the contents of the letters because they were sealed.
The family's statement said Sullivan, Delp's children and their mother, his ex-wife Micki Delp, were grateful for the sympathy they had received and asked that their privacy be respected.
Brad Delp joined Boston in the mid-1970s and sang two of its biggest hits, "More than a Feeling" and "Long Time."
Delp had planned to marry Sullivan this summer during a break in a tour with Boston. A lifelong Beatles fan, Delp also played with a tribute band, Beatle Juice.
Beatle Juice performed a benefit last year to help build a new public library in Atkinson, a small town of about 6,000 residents on the Massachusetts border.
The family said last week it planned a private funeral followed by a public memorial to be scheduled later. Family and friends directed donations to the American Heart Association in Framingham, Mass.

How odd is that that he was in one of the 70's most popular and famous bands and then has played in a Beatles tribute band since 1994.
Boston would be a band that probably has it's own tribute bands out there.
I had a chance to go back stage during their Corporate America tour a few years back. After the concert Brad changed into a beattles t-shirt. I was really impressed that even though it was late and they were in a hurry to get onto their bus to head to the next town, they took the time to make sure they did a good meet and greet with all of their fans. I asked Brad about his beattles band and he said he was a huge Paul Mccartney fan. He also said trying to sing the beattles songs helped him keep his voice in shape and worked on his range.

My heart sank when I read that Brad Delp was gone. Although I'm mostly an alternative rock fan these days, my favorite band at age 13 or so was Boston. Wonderful harmonies, musicianship, and terrific songwriting. I still have a soft spot in my heart for their work.
Now knowing that Brad committed suicide pushes the dagger even further. I wish I could have seen them live.
Thank you for your wonderful vocals Brad and for all the great memories that they were a part of. You really lifted me up during some sad times and made some good times even better. I hope that when my time comes I'll get to see you perform live in the great concert hall in the sky.

So I guess that anyone that isn't heavy metal is "Pop" in your book. Not at all.
That would make make Van Halen, Journey and REO Speedwagon also pop. I'm so hurt. All this time, I thought I listened to Rock N Roll and I was just another pop listening teenager.Pretty much but people's definition of rock and pop vary.
They were produced for radio play almost exclusively.

RIP.
I still have the rack mount version (Rockman XPR), midi pedal and the X100 practice version as well. And I say practice version when I shouldn't...some well known 80s guitar tracks were laid down with an X100. I'm not parting with mine but most of the SR&D Rockman units are now bringing more than they cost new on eBay. Incredible guitar tones that no other equipment emulates well to this day.
And Brad's voice was amazing. Not just in Boston but also in his Beatles tribute band called Beatle Juice. Lots of clips available on YouTube. He could sound just like Paul.
Big props to those that remembered the Orion The Hunter release. Barry Goudreau also had a solo album with Delp making a guest appearance. Both of those are currently available on Amazon.

Does this mean he owes carbon footprints to Al Gore?

Can you be any more dumb or gullible? I am making fun of Gore d!pShiat. This reminds me of you buying a broom at the $.99 store and I asked you how much you paid for it. You were dumb enough to answer it with a smartass remark. BTW: You said I was on your ignore (even though you say you never do that). Stop being a Hillary Clinton and make up your mind. You either put me on ignore or take the abuse I dish out to your gullible mind.
CATS DO MAKE NOISE WHEN HUMPING. That is why pops shot the cat in the A$$. Dont worry mock, I dont think the cat died. I wouldnt care, though, if it did.

Boston set out to be what they called(as bassist Fran Sheehan would say) a "city-fied" version of The Allman Brothers, complete with dual leads. I live no too far from New Hampshire.
Here in New England, the band is held in high esteem. As several people have mentioned in previous posts, you could be at any party, you put that first album on, heck even 'Don't Look Back", and instantly the party kicks in. They unfortunately got lumped in that corporate rock category. I don't know where that even started. (I know, Journey, Foreigner etc...)
There is always great music to discover, and i'm not one who always has to maintain that frame of mind, "ahhh, man, music ain't what it was", but I seriously doubt in this age of i-pods, satelite, internet, that people will come across an album like the first Boston album, where they know and build an emotional attachment to every track. You wanna hear one of the greatest guitar moments ever, listen to the end of "Hitch a ride"...
Brad was a sweet and gentle soul, he will be missed. And as cliche' and hokey as this is, great music lives forever....

When Boston first started out..didn't they say on the back of the debut album. " We shall never go commercial" or something to that effect. I was impressed as a teenager about that. They were in it for the music, and for the fans! Brad was a great live performer, and will be missed.

Delp's suicide note: I am a lonely soul
By Katharine Webster, Associated Press Writer | March 15, 2007
ATKINSON, N.H. --Brad Delp, the lead singer for the band Boston who killed himself last week, left behind a note in which he called himself "a lonely soul," according to police reports released Thursday.
Toxicology tests by the state medical examiner's office showed that Delp committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning. Police said Delp had sealed himself inside a bathroom with two charcoal grills sometime between 11:30 p.m. March 8 and the next afternoon, when he was found by fiancee Pamela Sullivan.
Sullivan told police that Delp "had been depressed for some time, feeling emotional (and) bad about himself," according to the reports.
He was found on the floor of the bathroom, his head on a pillow and a note paper-clipped to the neck of his shirt.
"Mr. Brad Delp. J'ai une ame solitaire. I am a lonely soul," it read.
Sullivan called police after noticing a dryer vent tube connected to the exhaust pipe of Delp's car. In the garage, police found a note taped to the door leading into the house.
"To whoever finds this I have hopefully committed suicide. Plan B was to asphyxiate myself in my car."
In a third note on a door at the top of the stairs, Delp cautioned that there was carbon monoxide inside.
"I take complete and sole responsibility for my present situation. I have lost my desire to live," he wrote. The note also included instructions on how to contact his fiancee. There was a picture of Delp and Sullivan in the bathroom.
"Unfortunately she is totally unaware of what I have done," the note said.
The notes also said the couple's cat, Floppy, should be in a room that was safe from the deadly gas and asked that someone find her and make sure she was all right.
Police later found four sealed letters in an office addressed to Sullivan, his children, their mother, Micki Delp, and another couple whose identity was not disclosed. Police Lt. William Baldwin said police gave the letters to family members without reading them.
Outside the bathroom, police found a carbon monoxide detector with the battery removed.
Delp joined Boston in the mid-1970s and sang two of its biggest hits, "More than a Feeling" and "Long Time."
He had planned to marry Sullivan this summer during a break in a tour with Boston. A lifelong Beatles fan, Delp also played with the tribute band Beatle Juice.
Delp was cremated Wednesday, police said. A private funeral was held earlier this week.

After reading this...I couldn't remember anything like that so I pulled the album out and reread the comments on the back of the jacket. No such statement is made there....it just goes on about how they all met and some of the tech stuff concerning Tom's sound.
