That was absurd...he could of cut his neck if it had been one inch lower. He needs to be suspended for the rest of the year.
I don't know much about "The unwritten code", but after the game he knew he was in for a real bad dog beating.

It was bad. I don't think he deserves a rest of the year suspension though. Melrose is calling for the rest of the year and playoffs, so since it's the Rags it would just be the rest of the regular season. Ha!

It's not like the first time he's been suspended. He got checked fair and square prior.

If that swing had been a inch lower or higher, Hollweg would have had either his windpipe crushed or lost an eye....Simon plays for the Islanders....dumb ass;)
He deserves the whole year + playoffs.....Dale Hunter did less and got more.

Darnit. I forgot that. Well he did play for the Rags. I knew you'd be all up on this one, Fink.
He does have a prior record. This is the NHL though, lots of handslapping goes on. We'll see.
I guess if you looked at what could have happened, it's a lot worse. If you look at the result, its not that bad. Who knows which side of the fence Campbell will be on this time.

Ok, I watched it again. He does lay there for awhile.
It was worse than I originally thought. I think a rest of the season suspension would be fair.

Nope...it was a clean hard hit by Hollweg too....I thought it caught him in the throat...luckily it hit his shoulder first and slid up into his chin.

Yeah, I agree Hollweg's hit was clean, it was a nice check. Simon is dirty, he always has been. This really shouldn't be that big of a surprise to anyone.
The Rangers got away with one though. That no-goal call was crap. I don't know how the hell they didn't see what everyone else saw.

Personally I dont, but maybe i'm biased because I love the Av's

Dave Brown his Tomas Sandstrom in 1987 with a cross check to the head that was brutal.
And then of course you have McSorley and Todd Bertuzzi, in fairly recent history.
This ranks up there, but I don't think it was any worse than those others. I hate it whenever people say "this is the worst ever" and totally forgte about history.
I like the Mike and Mike show but this morning, Greenberg was asying how "this is the worst I've seen". C'mon.

I don't either. I am biased though too. :)
Lots of people do though. It could have ended up worse.
What a weird coincidence this comes on the 3 year anniversary to the day of the Moore/Bertuzzi incident.

Read EJ Hradeck's take on it....He mentions it was bad but that craps on Hollweg, I can't stand that POS....
I couldn't tell if it was a goal or not. The puck was on edge, if it was flat, I think it would have counted.
No, I do not think this is has bad as the Bert/Moore incident but it's still brutal.

I think that's just as bad as what Marty McSorley did to [Donald] Brashear. .. You can't just two-hand a guy in the face with your stick."
-- Rangers winger Sean Avery.
"Let's just see if Colin Campbell finally does something about this stuff and doesn't give him three games like he gave that other meathead from New Jersey."
-- Avery, referring to the NHL's discipline of the Devils' Cam Janssen for a hit on the Maple Leafs' Tomas Kaberle.

I was watching it with my girlfriend and she goes "Ummm... I think he's dead".
But it was a clean check by Hollweg. Simon just lost it, it looked like. It's funny because the Islanders, it looked like, totally outplayed them in the first 2 and 3/4 periods. I don't think it could have been out of frustration. I honestly would like to know what goes on in someones head when they decide to do that. It's scary.
And about that goal, like Finkle said the puck was on edge, so that was probably the reason they didnt call it. But as a Ranger fan, I thought it WAS a goal and we got away with one. But a wins a win. And plus, if they did call it a goal originally they probably wouldn't have overturned that either. So it works both ways.

Eventually we're going to see the day where an NHL player does get killed and another goes to prison. Unfortunately it will take that to get the game to reform itself.

Avery is a jagov, but he's right about the Cam Janssen situation. The fact that Janssen only got three games for that cheap shot on Kaberle is a joke. But this is the NHL we're talking about, so it's basically a running joke that's been going on for years. Rarely do you ever see a guy get what he deserves when he does something stupid that results in someone getting hurt.
Simon should be suspended for one calendar year.

Hollowig did hit simon from behind but it's not an excuse to tomahawk chop a guy simon could of just grabbed him and kicked his a**, why he did is beyond me.
Hollweg quoted:
“I’m a little surprised,” Hollweg said. “As far as I knew we respected each other as hockey players and that’s it. I just play my game. And playing my game helped us win, so that’s good.”
he could have said i hit him in the numbers and probably shouldn't have (too be fair) but simon will get what he deserves and it's going to hurt his team.

Heck this used to happen all the time back in the day, today NHL isn't remotely as bad as it used to be it's a very intense game and some lose their tempers and make poor decisions. Over a hundred years of hockey and i can't find a death sure some guys get ***** up and fines and suspensions occur but it's far from needing to be reformed that's a bit heavy handed don't ya think. How often does this type of offense occur? with as many games that are played weekly (shyt happens) just like in any sport.

Can someone find the Dave Brown Tomas Sandstrom clip? Brown just cross checked him right in the side of the head-neck and put Sandstrom out for a while.
I haven't seen that one in years.

Is not even as close to being as bad as the Bertuzzi mugging. Yes, he hit him with a stick and that is unacceptable but the Bertuzzi assault was planned 2 weeks in advance, he stalked him for half the game, and attacked him from behind being the P.O.S. low life scum coward that Bertuzzi is.
If Bertuzzi got 30 games Simon should get 5 in my opinion.

Bertuzzi's suspension ended up being 20 games. 20 games for ending a man's career.
I'm saying that the NHL has a chance to start cracking down on bull**** like this. Will they do it? Probably not.
As Brett Hull and someone earlier in this thread have said, I guess they're gonna wait until someone gets killed to clean up the game.

The timing is real ironic as Real Sports has a piece on Chris Simon and Ted Nolan this month. It's a piece on Nolan, but mentions Simon reuniting with Nolan, because Nolan thought the world of him.

Yeah, 20 games. This irritates me when I see this:
Todd Bertuzzi missed the final 13 regular-season games and the playoffs because of his blindside punch to the head of Colorado's Steve Moore on March 11, 2004. But the banishment was extended to 17 months and prevented him from playing anywhere during the yearlong NHL lockout.
They can't tack the lockout onto his sentence. No one played in the NHL that year and that was what the suspension was for. Not the minors, not the Euro leagues.

I'm certain that had there not been a lockout...Pink Panties would have been reinstated at the start of the season.
Fighting is one thing...stick work is another. They need to send a severe message...use your stick as a weapon and you miss 41 games...at the minimum.

Are you trying to classify what Bertuzzi did as fighting? Fighting is when you square up face to face and drop the gloves which Steve Moore had done with someone else earlier.
What Bertuzzi did was a premeditated pearl harbor mugging of a criminal nature.
I'm still pissed about it like 3 years later. I've been boycotting the Avalanche for the last two seasons because they then had the arogance and gall to sign that other criminal Brad May... now that he's gone I've actually watched a couple games funny as that is.

You boycotted the Avs because of the May signing? No offense, but that's kinda lame. You gave up on the rest of the team because the front office had their heads up their asses?
Crazy.
