Broncos | Team showing strong interest in Ramsey
Wed, 7 Mar 2007 12:04:10 -0800

Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports the Denver Broncos are very interested in signing free agent QB Patrick Ramsey (Jets) to be the team's new backup quarterback. Ramsey is drawing interest from the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans as well as the Broncos and could have a new team by the end of the day.

I really don't understand why there's any market for the guy. He can't keep a job no matter where he goes or how many chances he's given.

I believe Schefter said this morning that don't be surprised if Ramsey is signed today

Pay him the vet minimum and give him a shot in camp....cut him if/when he sucks.

Same problem exists for Ramsey as Brad Johnson -- no chance to play in Denver. Houston would be the favorite beause of the mess that is their QB situation.

He's a capable QB with starting experience. He didn't get a legit chance in Washington and he didn't get a legit chance in NYJ, both cases the coaching staff and ownership had their favorites they were just waiting to oust him for. He isn't Joey Harrington.

At least it doesn't appear they are talking to Jeff George

This guy could "develop" some value. Give him some solid coaching, let him play a little, rebuild his confidence.

Turn on the Shanny press machine and trade him for a pick or 2 next year.

Getting a backup QB for our situation is tricky.

There is NO QB competiton and NO chance, barring injury, for the backup to play.

We don't want a young guy to develop because our starter is a young guy.

Vets usually still want to have a chance to really play, or at least get paid as such.

In addition, does anyone who wants to be a backup really have the drive to be prepared for when the times comes?

Tricky.

No matter what, we are screwed if Culter goes down for any length of time, so just get someone cheap.

You make some good points. What you need is a guy that knows his role. Those guys (like a Batch in Pittsburgh) are great. They get a pretty good deal as well -- they make a boat-load of money (relative to other careers) and they don't take the beating that the starter takes.

But yeah if you don't have a guy with that mentality then it will be short-lived. For example, Ramsey will likely only take a short deal if he agrees to come to Denver so he can survey things again next year and see who is looking for a starter.

As a Skins fan I'm familiar with Ramsey. The redskins organization messed with the guy's head, got him beat up under Spurriers insane "Run n' Gun" failure in the NFL. Spurrier had the guy throw deep a lot with minimal pass protection and he got creamed. Then management infighting eventually caused him to leave washington. Guy's big, strong, has a CANNON for an arm and can make all the throws. He's a good teammate and never complained publicly even when the Redskins jerked his chains (coach wanted/didn't want him, so called GM wanted, didn't want him, Owner wanted/didn't want him). He needs to go to a stable franchise where he'll get a shot at starting. Hopefully his brains arent' too scrambled to make a go of it. He falls under that 'talented guy whose opportunity never worked out' category. Hopefully he won't be shuttled around the league until its too late for him to be considered a starter.

I think Ramsey would be a good pickup. I think with all the miles he's put behind him he'd be happy to put a couple of years in Denver.

Ramsey is capable and a former first round pick. He's had some nice games in the NFL. Who keeps suggesting Weinke? He's terrible

When are we going to show serious interest in fixing one or both lines?

What do you hope happens on the O-line?

LT Lepsis is coming back
LG Hamilton
C Nalen
RG Competition between Kuper and the new guy
RT Competition between Pears and Meadows

Pretty good shape I think

As far as the D-line goes, I think you'll have to wait for the draft.

I think the DC and his crew are serious about talking about it for now. This good. The more press articles the better are players will be.

The OC is dancing in the back room with X's and O's on a board somewhere. He probably doesn't realize there is a long road from the board to the grass.

The Special teams guy actually brought in a player. Holy crap! We have a third phase to our game? Dare I be excited?!

I don't agree with your assessment at all.

Fact is...he CAN'T make all of the NFL throws. He has a serious problem with any throw that requires a soft touch. We cringed in Washington whenever he attempted dump offs. Plus, he likes to force throws into double/triple coverage...AND he simply can't be taught to throw the ball away. He would rather hang in the pocket and take the hit, which tends to lead to turnovers. He got an early reputation for being a "tough guy who takes hits" so I think he would rather take the hit for the press, than throw it away and live to play another down.

Secondly, he DID complain as a Redskin; at least on two different occasions. He complained the day they brought in Brunell when was told he would have to actually compete for the starting job. He also complained when Gibbs benched him in week one for Brunell, who eventually took them to the 2nd round of the playoffs.

He was given every opportunity to compete for the starting job each of his last two seasons in Washington and he simply crumpled under pressure. His preseason games are running jokes with Redskins fans.

Overall, I guess you could say he is a "nice guy"...but I think he has entitlement issues when things aren't given to him. But you are correct that he has a cannon. Kyle Boller had a cannon also and look what that got him.

Sounds an awful lot like all young, strong armed qbs who think they can throw through a wall. Heard that about a guy in Denver, too.

Well, dude's brains got scrambled by minimal pass protection from an average Skins line. Part of it was personnel, part of it was Spurriers screwball offense where every down was "first and 80."

Secondly, he DID complain as a Redskin; at least on two different occasions. He complained the day they brought in Brunell when was told he would have to actually compete for the starting job. He also complained when Gibbs benched him in week one for Brunell, who eventually took them to the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Maybe, I remember a couple of comments. But there were no direct attacks on coaches or teammates, and he's a competitor. And a grown man. Was he supposed to say "Gee its okay...I'll just stand here and be a stump?" People are human, no one wants to lose their job. But he had the support of the team, even after he was promised the starting job and was yanked at first convenience by Gibbs. Who, as we suspect in Washington was being blackmailed by compromising pictures held by Mark Brunell.

He was given every opportunity to compete for the starting job each of his last two seasons in Washington and he simply crumpled under pressure. His preseason games are running jokes with Redskins fans.

On the surface it may seem so. But take any young qb and yank him around and I guarantee you'll get similar results, I don't care WHO they are.

For the most part he was quiet and gave good interviews. I'm not sure about these instances you're talking about. The NFL is littered with talented guys you'll never know about because they never got the right situation. Look at Favre...he was an unknown backup in Atlanta that got a chance because Ron Wolf liked some things he saw. Holmgren cultivated the guy and made him a pro bowl qb instead of a wild thrower. Joe Montana wasn't regarded AT ALL by scouts. Only Walsh felt the guy would fit his offense. Brady was another washout physically throughout college, and drew no attention from scouts. Got a chance through injury and again, Belly-Check liked what he saw. Even now the main thing you can say is Brady wins. There's still nothing that stands out, although he's considered a 'late bloomer'. He's cool, regimented and systematic with the same coaches through his career. He got a chance over the more physically talented Bledsoe, who has (again) the 'lapse' syndrome he can't shake. So Brady won the battle between the ears. Some guys get beat out of their confidence early and never see their potential.

RT is still a revolving door.

RG is a complete unknown (except for the fact that neither player has produced at the level we expect from Bronco linemen...we know that much)

JUST SAY NO TO RAMSEY - someone will cut their overpaid QB before camps begin and there will be 3-4 good ones to choose from. Maybe Trent Green can 'back up' our STAR, eh Chief fans???
