NEW YORK (CNN) -- He fought and triumphed over Hitler, Tojo, international Communism and a host of supervillains, but he could not dodge a sniper's bullet.

Comic book hero Captain America is dead.

After close to 60 years in print, Marvel Comics has killed off Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, one of its most famous and beloved superheroes amid an already controversial story line, "Civil War," which is pitting the heroes of Marvel's universe against one another.

In the comic series, Rogers was to stand trial for defying a superhero registration law passed after a hero's tragic mistake causes a 9/11-like event.

Steve Rogers eventually surrenders to police. He is later mortally wounded as he climbs the courthouse steps.

Marvel says the comic story line was intentionally written as an allegory to current real-life issues like the Patriot Act, the War on Terror and the September 11 attacks.

"Every child knew about 9/11," says Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Comics. "If [he] could see a TV he knew what 9/11 was. The other similarities [to] things going on are just part of storytelling."

It was a violent and strange end for an American hero.

Captain America first appeared in 1941, just as the United States entered World War II. He was a symbol of American strength and resolve in fighting the Axis powers, and later Communism.

As originally conceived by creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Rogers was a man born before the Great Depression in a very different America. He disappeared after the war and reappeared only recently in the Marvel timeline. For a superhero many thought perfect, it was perhaps a fatal flaw for "Cap," as he became known.

"He hasn't been living in the modern world and the world does move," says Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Queseda.

Queseda said he wanted to readers find their own meaning in Cap's end.

"There is a lot to be read in there. But I'm not one who is going to tell people, this is what you should read into it, because I could look into it and read several different types of messages," he told CNN.

Still, one has to wonder: Is Captain America really dead? Comic book characters have routinely died, only to be resurrected when necessary to storylines.

Joe Queseda agrees -- but said times are different now.

"There was period in comics where characters would just die and then be resurrected. And the death had very little meaning and the resurrection had very little meaning," he said. "All I ask of my writers is if you're going to kill a character off, please let that death have some meaning in the overall scope of things."

Besides, he said, there are other important questions left unanswered.

"What happens with the costume? And what happens to the characters that are friends and enemies of Cap?" Queseda said with a smile. "You're going to have to read the books to find out."

My buddy saw a sneak preview of 300, best movie ever. He said.

Captain America dieing is a plot mirroring what Emperor Bush has done to our country.

Symbolic and touching. I'm sure this will rally millions of folks like these to flock to the streets and protest!

Doesn't matter - he'll still be around in some timeline/universe/mythos - there are so many alternate worlds and timelines that reading them becomes a second job anymore.

That idiotic trend, along with utterly absurd prices for their product, all but killed the industry.

Captain America will never die and Stan Lee remains my favorite living American.

Political correctness is an oxy-moron. Captain America rules, as does his namesake.

Oprah and Hillary should move to France and start a country....Gore could be the offical weatherman.

Ehh it'll end up not being him thats actually killed (just the symbol he reps or some crap) or he'll eventually come back at some point, they all do. Making it a big deal just means they'll wait a little longer before they bring him back. Good way to bring up sales by equating it to real life events heh.

Is that all the more respect you have for the guy after he battled those Russian commies back in the day?

Come on Mock I thought you were much more patriotic than that.

Mock hails from a long line of draft dodgers.

He would have sooner sold military secrets to the Nazis (if he knew any) than participate in the Super Soldier Program.

It's communism and PC c**p that killed Capt. America. Joe Quesadilla will probably want to substitute Ron Mexico for the Capt. Capt.

Once officially. Some alternate realities and changed timelines.

considering only one person officially...and another Tuskegee "volunteer" have successfully become a Super Soldier rather than dying or going insane and having to be killed...it's not a slam dunk for me either.

Bastards. Captain America was, next to Batman, my favorite super hero. So symbolic.

He'll be back eventully, though. Book it.

half of my working vocabulary as a maturing adult came from marvel comic books. (I know, its not much.) DC sucked for dialogue. I'm amazed they still make comic books with cheapo DVDs available. if i was a kid today ( i guess i still am inside) i'd rather play video games and watch videos than read [anything].

Marvel does it again. This is just another stunt, "Civil War" ended poorly are was plagued by missed shipping dates (as are most of their titles) this is just a way to try and keep sales up. Hell they brought back Norman Osbourn, Gwen Stacy, Jean Grey (more than once) and others. They broke the #1 rule of all by bringing Bucky back. (Cap's WW2 partner that was killed in the accident which put Cap on ice for 50+ years.)
Cap isn't dead, currently there are at least 2 new heroes whose ID's are a mystery one named Penace is on a team that is made up of super-villians called the Thunderbolts (Cap would seem to be the perfect watchdog over these former baddies) and the other is known as Roniann with the Avengers (Cap's former team). Dollars to doughnuts one of these guys is Cap. All the "speculators" went out and bought this book thinking they will sell it on ebay and pay for their kid's college but when Marvel promotes something like this the print run is a little higher than usual if everyone owns it there is no demand for it, short term prices will go up but after a year and Cap's return you will be lucky to get $4 over cover price.

Well, as an avid comic book collector I wasn't surprised since I've been reading the CIVIL WAR storyline and tie ins...they even announced this on ABC news in my area. But like anything else with Marvel, "death" translates into "convenience". I'll look for this "cap" to be a clone/fake and the real cap is stashed somewhere...besides, the door's already open for his return. I'm just not interested in the 'big dramatic death scene.' that's coming our way.

I need to sell my old comics on EBay, but its too much of a hassle to have them graded. I've got tons of Marvel dating back to the 60s and 70s. I was thinking about just selling the less valuable ones in lots of 30 or 50.

Sounds a lot like my collection (I started collecting in college). You could try selling them at an open air market, say package certain groupings and sell them that way. Or go to a comic convention and see if any of the major collectors would be interested in your stuff. 8')
