After throwing punches at big-dollar targets since the free agency bell rang four days ago, the Broncos landed a knockout Monday with the high-profile signing of veteran running back Travis Henry.

In their biggest out-of-house transaction since the trade and signing of star cornerback Champ Bailey three years ago, the Broncos landed their most experienced, and expensive, tailback since the days of Terrell Davis.

The Broncos signed Henry to a five-year, $22.5 million contract. Henry, whose deal is front-loaded in the first three years, will make $12 million in guaranteed bonuses.

"I'm glad to be a Bronco," Henry said. "This is where I think I belong. The sky is the limit for me in Denver. ... With Jay Cutler being an up-and-coming star, this offense will be able to do great things."

The Broncos are not done swinging even though they lost out on defensive end Patrick Kerney. He chose to go to Seattle on Monday in a six-year, $39.5 million deal that includes $19.5 million in bonuses.

With Kerney out, the Broncos likely will turn their attention to the April draft for a new defensive end. The draft is heavy at the position, and Denver has the No. 21 pick.

Denver still is in the running for New England tight end Daniel Graham, a former Colorado star. Graham is awaiting word from Seattle. A decision could be made today.

Denver may have to cut a few players to find salary cap room to get its entire wish list. Even if they don't get Graham, the Broncos already are distinctly different from the team that faded and finished 9-7 after a 7-2 start.

The Broncos traded for cornerback Dré Bly on Thursday, traded for defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson on Saturday, signed New Orleans guard Montrea Holland on Saturday and signed fullback and special teams ace Paul Smith of St. Louis to a three-year deal Monday.

Bly and Henry are the biggest newcomers so far. The Broncos have found their starting tailback. There will be no trade to move up in the draft and select Adrian Peterson or Marshawn Lynch. There will be no trade for Willis McGahee.

"When I was on my visit, I just knew Denver was the right place," Henry said. "I just felt so much love from Coach (Mike) Shanahan."

The Broncos have a proven NFL running back, which should help the Cutler era. Sure, the Broncos have had success trotting out the likes of Olandis Gary, Clinton Portis, Reuben Droughns, Mike Anderson, Tatum Bell and Mike Bell, but Henry comes to Denver with a track record of NFL success.

Henry rushed for 1,211 yards with the Tennessee Titans last season. Henry, a 2001 second-round draft pick from the University of Tennessee, spent his first four seasons with Buffalo and the past two with the Titans. In 2002 and 2003, he combined for 2,794 yards rushing for the Bills. Henry should fit in well with the Broncos because he is a one-cut running back.

But Henry comes with a yellow caution flag. He already has served a four-game suspension for violating the league's drug policy. If he violates the policy again, he will serve a one-year suspension. Henry's last infraction was two years ago, and many in Nashville say he has been a model citizen since.

"This is just a great move for Travis," said his agent, Hadley Engelhard. "Denver is perfect for what he does. It will be a great fit."

Denver pounced on Henry as soon as he was cut by the Titans on Saturday. He was released because he would not restructure a contract that was scheduled to pay him an $8.3 million roster bonus Monday.

The Broncos kept Henry in town Sunday night, postponing his visit with Oakland. Now Henry will be an Oakland rival.

Portis doesn't have a track record of success? Anderson was the ROY...always wonder if Burger Bill really watches football games or just writes columns.

He's talking about having a track record of success before he joined the organization. That's some pretty key context.

True, but when was the last time a RB had a track record of success coming to Denver?

The point is rather moot since under Shanny the broncos grow RB's and have no need to bring someone in. Which I find bizarre to pay a large amount of money a 28, going on 29 this year, a RB who is one joint away from a suspension. And who's production is rather incosistent year over year.

Very odd Shanahan would go this route.

NEVER once has Henry produced a great season. His best season was his 2nd year and produced 1400 yards. Now, he's a middle of the road RB who turns 29 years old this year.

And for all the flak Mcgahee has received on this board in regards to children, Henry is one puff puff pass from a year's suspension. Mcgahee carried the rock an avg of 289 carries per season(excluding his rookie year since he was coming off os surgery). Henry's 4.1 ypc vs Mcgahee's 3.9. Big whoop. Mcgahee is younger, and playing for a new contract. He would have exploded in Denver's scheme this season. The man would have been hungry for a new contract. I'm not happy with this trade, because Denver could've spent better.

Willis McGahee is an overrated lop of **** who would have cost the Broncos a draft pick and a new contract. **** him and his douchebag agent. Let him rot in Bufflao.....oh wait, I forgot, Buffalo's not big city enough for him, so I'm sure he'd have been thrilled with the idea of being in Denver. ::)

He wouldn't cost denver a new contract. And the douchebag agent currently represents another bronco.

You yourself just said that he's "hungry for a new contract." I'm pretty sure that McGahee and Rosenholdout are planning to try and break the bank for him despite the fact that his career has been mostly non-descript.

And yes, Rosenholdout represents Chris Myers, our backup guard/center. Whoop dee doo.

Yes, hungry for a new contract. Mcgahee would make **** demanding a new contract now. He has to go out and prove it to get a new deal. Like any RB who wants a new deal, they have to go for it.

As much as fans on this board hates Drew, doesn't stop the Broncos drafting the players he represents.

Myers was a second day pick. Not even Rosenholdout could make an issue out of his rookie deal.

Yet, he was a selection. Doesn't matter if it's 1st or 2nd day. The Broncos invested in one of Drew's clients.

Then why the phrase "the likes of", and "proven NFL running back", which generally denotes a degree of disdain for those that played here. He seems to be advocating the "anybody can run in this system" idea...and like most FANS, he probably doesn't realize that certain skill sets have to be present to run in this stretch zone scheme and not all backs who are successful elsewhere will be successful here. Hence, our ability to find players deep in the draft that don't fit the measurables typically sought by other NFL teams. Besides...Portis and Droughns both have had solid NFL seasons for other teams, so who cares if it was prior to Denver or after Denver. Talent wise, Portis and Bell were both 2nd rounders just like Henry. And he obviously ommited TD from the group as well.

The only good thing about McGahee coming to Denver was my plan to copywright the Denver bumper sticker of "Honk If Willis Is Your Baby's Daddy".

Now I'm still searching for a get rich quick scheme....

Which one of those backs had you heard of before they took the field in Denver?

Why not just admit you didn't assimilate what "proven NFL back" meant in this context?

bottom line is that it didnt cost us a draft pick...plus mcgahee is a fag.

get over yourself...chris myers has nothing in common with willis mcgahee...willis is a primadonna who just wants to get paid and get random girls knocked up in his fantasy "big city"...no thanks. rather have travis who's hungry and plays hard whether a contract is on the line or not.

Chris Myers was never expected to come in and start right away. If we had brought McGahee in, he would have been the de facto starter and that's where RosenTurd strikes...

I would have prefered McGahee, problem is he costs a pick. I'm content with Travis Henry, and we save a pick. Still have 4 within #21 - #86.

GOOD THINGS.

If some people don't want a player who has children born out of wedlock on the Broncos roster, there are probably about 20 players on the current roster who you should recommend cutting from the current roster right now.
