Rod talks ongoing.

The Broncos remain among a handful of teams strongly interested in free-agent tight end Daniel Graham, who'll have to weigh the benefits of playing in his hometown with the accompanying distractions. . . . There has been no resolution in ongoing talks regarding a restructured contract for receiver Rod Smith. . . . The revised contract negotiated with defensive tackle Gerard Warren is expected to reduce his cap figure to about $2.2 million, down from $4.8 million. . . . One running back the Broncos have significant interest in is Green Bay free agent Ahman Green, who has excelled in a similar zone blocking scheme

Sounds like Rod may be playing hardball in his restructuring talks...fair play to him, he's cut his financial throat for the team before, however there is no way you pay a #3 reciever $7M so something has to give.

Rod's a shrewd businessman so maybe he likes the free-agent market? I know, say it ain't so, Rod should finish his career in a Broncos uni, but this is a business at the end of the day.....

$8.6m is Rod's cap number this year.

BTW in answer to the 1st question. Prior to the Warren restructure the Broncos were $1.9m under the cap after tendering contracts to Sapp ($1.3m) and Kyle Johnson (850k). The Warren savings took the team to $4.5m under the cap.

Once the Bly deal goes through with Dre's current contract we'll be sitting at $1.7m under because the trade costs us $2.8m in cap room to facilitate as it stands.

So in summary once Bly's confirmed it's $1.7m under.

Rod has never cut his throat for the Broncos. Anything restructuring he did in the past ended up with mr. Bowlen handing him money upfront in the form of a check instead of paid via salary. He has been very willing to do what the broncos wanted but he never lost money. Usually he got a big check to deposit in the bank and accrue interest, he's not a saint.

I thought we would be much more under then this. Taking into account that we will be getting rid of Plummer's cap, Brown's cap and most likely Rod's cap. I can't see Mike giving Rod anything more then 3 million for next year. I also want to say that I think it was a good move to keep "meat" under contract as long as he restructured. Now let those big toes heal, give him some help along that line and let's rock and roll with Bates and the new D.
