BRONCOS MAKING A PLAY FOR KERNEY?
There's talk in league circles that the Denver Broncos will make a strong push for Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney once free agency opens at 12:01 a.m. EST.
Kerney was able to void the remainder of his contract after the deadline for applying the franchise tag, ensuring that he'd hit the market.
The Broncos' interest in Kerney is being interpreted as evidence that the team is prepared to part ways with defensive end Courtnet Brown, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 draft.

I think we're making a push to win the thing this year. The next step will be marquee running back.

I don't know what I think of Kerney? Good character guy can be very good but I'm afraid he will be severely overpaid and is on the decline. Plus White DE's aren't very good according to some guys here. :)
Can we really afford him???? Would be a great addition!

Apparently, MaGahee is the top choice. Don't like it since he has not had a remarkable career so far and will cost a first day choice. I agree, though, looks like Shanny wants to load up for a major push. I'd rather go with Lewis who at least won't cost a pick.

For some reason I have always liked Kerney. I would love him here.

We signed Neil Smith late in his career and netted us 2 superbowls and he went to the probowl.

Honestly, Kerney does not excite me, either. Hasn't had double digit sacks since '02, and is 30 years old, which is usually around the age pass rushers hit a wall.

Neil took an incentive laden deal and was at any rate better than Kerney. Patrick is a nice player, but not worth the scratch he'll command, especially at his age.

I wonder if this is wise though. I mean, I know we just saw Big Ben win in his second year, but is it really worth it to spend on players to win this year with a very young QB?
I'm on the Cutler bandwagon as much as anybody, but I do wonder if we would have been better served to make a push next year, Cutler's 3rd year in the NFL.

Smith was 34 when we signed him. Kearny is 30. We pick up an outside threat for our passrush, I dont see the negative here.

PK could be in Seattle as early as Saturday. The guy also says that Denver is the team to watch for Graham.

But, again, Neil signed a one year $1 miilion dollar deal plus incentives. We won't get Kerney for anything like that. The negative is tying up big money in a guy who hasnt had more than 7 sacks since 2002 at an age when lineman tend to hit a wall.
sign graham quick, let kerney go for big money, draft two d-line on the first day.... we'll be set

Can anyone imagine if we landed Kerney, Graham, Bly and Mcgahee. Break the rules do what it takes, next year is a special year. We have to win it for Darrent and Damien. I do not care if it takes another 10.

Here's a piece of an article on Foxsports. I don't know if I agree.
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6519368
Patrick Kerney, defensive end, Falcons
With Dwight Freeney and Justin Smith getting the franchise tag, the available pool of defensive ends is shallow. That means teams looking to add a defensive end might overpay for Kerney, thinking he's their only option. That would be a mistake. Last season Kerney, a nine-year veteran, looked like he had lost a step. His annual sack total has declined from 13 in 2004 to 6.5 in 2005 to 4.5 last year, when he was limited to nine games because of a torn pectoral muscle. The team that signs Kerney needs to understand that the dominant pass rusher from 2004 is long gone.

when you're right you're right....chris brown will be cheap....trade for thomas jones is backup plan, but i'd rather keep the third and draft a rookie RB with it...it think, maybe not...not sure how i feel about trading for an older RB....

I'm looking at the draft and where we are sitting DE and S seem like the best options at 21. I'd rather add a FA DT then DE.
If by chance we do land Kerney and McGahee I hope we trade down.

But, he's the best DE on the market and it looks like we're going to be willing to pay the premium for a guy who can make an immediate impact. We'll see if Bill Johnson's presence and the chance to play for a great organization in a real sports town brings any kind of discount.

We should just draft DE & DT cheaper.

It's funny you compare them .... didn't the Bills choose McGahee coming off major knee surgery - over Henry? And now their respective teams are getting rid of both of them.
I understand Henry is trouble off the field ... but why is Buffalo bailing on McGahee?

I've been telling everyone to look for Broncos to make some big moves this offseason. Bowlen will consistently throw a good chunk of bonus money each yr to bring in players. It's just that last 2-3 years we had to pay Bailey(huge bonus) lepsis, nalen, hamilton, warren all good size bonuses. This year we don't have any of our own FA to throw big signing bonuses at so we will throw it 2 or 3 FA. Getting FA like Kerney/Graham to go with trading for Bly would be really something. Not saying it would = wins you never know but it can't hurt.

The Broncos would be fortunate to sign Kerney. He's solid against the run and can get to the QB. I really don't understand the belief he is on the decline. People make it sound like he's about out of the NFL.
He's still only 30 years of age. Sure, his sacks dropped from 13 in 2004 to 7 in 2005, but he did have 4.5 in 9 games before he got hurt last year. Maybe getting 13 again isn't going to happen, but I think getting 10 isn't far fetched at all. Again, add he's solid against the run and isn't that what we're looking for, a complete DE type?
And I'll add last year was the first year he missed any games in his career, had played in all 16 games since 1999, so he's history isn't one of being exactly injury prone.

Henry had sex with an underage girl his rookie season, but claimed she lied about her age and he had no idea she was too young. As far as I know, that's the only off the field incident Henry has had.
McGahee attempts to fornicate with anything with labia. He also went out if his way to be a complete bastard to Bills fans. I guess I would prefer him over the washed up asshole Jamal Lewis, but just barely.

Lewis won't be going anywhere - Baltimore cut/waiver him not to pay the bonus that was due today. It strongly believed by the media and fans in Wash/Balt area that he will resign with the Ravens.
McGahee is a punk and trouble waiting to happen. we need to stay clear of that idiot.

Another blurb from ESPN this morning, looks like we will be seeing KErney and Graham ASAP. At least our guys are trying for the best available.
Free agency opened with an explosion of phone calls to set up visits for the 308 NFL available players.
Teams couldn't contact agents of free agent players until 12:01 a.m. ET Friday. Once they did, visits were set up for later in the day. The Broncos, Seahawks, 49ers and Browns were among the most aggressive teams.
Bengals guard Eric Steinbach is heading to Cleveland for a visit, with secondary trips set up with Tampa Bay and Seattle. The Seahawks talked Chargers guard Kris Dielman into making Seattle his first stop. Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney will begin his free agency tour in Denver. If no deal is worked out there, Kerney is off to Seattle for a visit.
Patriots tight end Daniel Graham visits the Broncos on Friday and has the Seahawks on his list of visits for later in the weekend. The Vikings persuaded Rams wide receiver Kevin Curtis to visit them first, but there could be weather problems. Most people thought Curtis would go to Detroit. The Vikings are also scheduling a trip for Giants tight end Visanthe Shiancoe for Friday.
Leonard Davis of the Cardinals hasn't scheduled a trip because negotiations were heating up with at least three NFC East teams, including the Dallas Cowboys.
Ravens tackle Tony Pathos scheduled a visit to Jacksonville for Friday. Falcons fullback Justin Griffith plans to go to Tampa Bay. The 49ers are expected to get a visit from Ravens linebacker Adalius Thomas. The Redskins were expected to be working on Bills linebacker London Fletcher. Colts halfback Dominic Rhodes plans to visit the Giants. Bills cornerback Nate Clements was talking to the Browns, Titans, 49ers and several other teams.

A agree. Kerney won't leave Denver without a contract. TBay or Houston will give up something for Plummer, maybe a third if we're lucky, and the Broncos will package some picks to move up for Lynch. :~ohyah!:

The guy is tough as nails and runs really hard. He plays a lot bigger then he is but everywhere he goes he seems to bring a great running game to that team. I think he would be great here.

From my point of view, we would be trading out C. Brown for Kerney -- how can than not be a good thing? Not that Brown is a bad player or person; he simply is not on the field that often due to his many injuries. We would be moving out a player that seldom sees playing time for someone who will.
Does anyone know what Brown's contract is? If he is cut, how would it affect our cap?

Lang had good year, is cheap and will get better once he gets to play the role they wanted him play last - a veteran rotational player that comes in to play on pass downs.
I'm more concern with the rush defense then getting a "pass" rusher. It becomes a lot easier to get the QB in 3rd and long then 3rd and short. I'm all for Kerney if he able to stop the run.
