Its official -- Denver is in the market for a big time back. They have now lost two of their top 3 backs. ouch.
My guess is they sign Jamal Lewis and then draft someone as well.
Since we got rid of garbage I am okay with the Bly deal. Of course I am sure he'll get a big contract as well :(

Lions trade Bly to Broncos for Tatum Bell, Foster
By Michael Smith
ESPN.com
The Detroit Lions have agreed to send cornerback Dre' Bly to the Denver Broncos in exchange for running back Tatum Bell and tackle George Foster. Trades cannot become official until Friday, the first day of the league year.
Bly, a two-time Pro Bowl performer who earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the 1999 St. Louis Rams, did not fit well in the Tampa 2 defensive scheme employed by second-year head coach Rod Marinelli and new defensive coordinator Joe Barry. Thus the Lions granted Bly and his agent, Kennard McGuire, permission to seek a trade two weeks ago.
The New Orleans Saints, New York Giants and Washington Redskins also were in the running for the 29-year-old Bly.
Neither Bly nor McGuire was available for comment.
In Denver, Bly will join Champ Bailey in forming one of the game's top cornerback tandems. The Broncos needed a replacement for Darrent Williams, who was killed in a drive-by shooting after a New Year's Eve party in Denver.
Bly is considered one of the game's best big-play cornerbacks. In eight seasons he has intercepted 31 passes, forced 17 fumbles, and scored eight touchdowns (five interception returns, two fumble returns, one punt return). Last season Bly tied for the team lead with three interceptions and led the Lions with 18 passes defended and four forced fumbles.
Bly has one year remaining on the $22 million free-agent contract he signed in 2003 and the Broncos are expected to begin working on a long-term agreement with McGuire.

Foster started 45 out of a possible 48 games the past three seasons at right tackle. The Lions were last in the league in rushing and allowed the second-most sacks (63) last season, so improving the offensive line is one of the team's top offseason priorities. This is great news! We get back depth at safety and at cornerback. This is AWESOME. That frees us up in the draft...wait. Weren't those a first and second rounder?
Doh!
This is just purely a steal for us. We keep all of our draft picks and we've got a highly productive corner on our hands who probably still has about two or three good seasons left in him. Not only that but he is a ballhawk too.
I know the emphasis is to get defensive linemen in this draft but if our guy isn't there at 21, I hope we find a way to pull in another ballhawking safety like Griffin or Nelson. Lynch would be free to play in the box and our CB's and safeties could lock down the opposing pass offense.
To give up just Foster and Bell? God, this is like an early Christmas present!

I wish Tatum and Foster well, but they clearly had limited futures with the Broncos. Tatum just was never comfortable in the Bronco running system and Foster was just a big disappointment. I can see Tatum doing well in Detroit, hopefully for him, will work on holding ono the ball. As for Foster, maybe they will get more out of him than the Broncos seemed able to.
For the Broncos, they get a CB who has Pro Bowl credentials, though yeah, that doesn't always mean much. But anyway, he's still in his prime and has been a guy known to make big plays and that's what needed on the other side of Champ. He might get beat taking some chances here and there, but I'd rather get beat that way than having my CB playing 10 yards off and giving up easy completion after another.
Like Requiem said, it's a good deal for both teams.

I like this article written on rotoworld.com
Broncos acquired CB Dre Bly for Tatum Bell and T George Foster.
It will become official Friday. No one works the trade market better than Mike Shanahan and GM Ted Sundquist. They got a Pro Bowl quality player at a position of need in exchange for spare parts they weren't going to use. Champ Bailey, Bly, and Dominique Foxworth will make a great trio. The Broncos will start working on a long-term deal for Bly.
It is also reported on their site that Detroit optioned for Foster instead of a 3rd rounder. Denver would of done either deal.

It's a steal for us because Foster sucks, and Tatum's speed is only good for about 10 yards before a stiff breeze or his shoe laces bring him down.

Yep... they lost one fragile soft track style HB and replaced him with another. Foster will be camp fodder.

THis trade helps both teams IMO.
Foster will be a better RT in Detroits system then he was in Denver. Plus Detroit needed a RB since K JOnes is out for at least 1/2 the season last year. Denver didn't fleece detroit IMO, but they did get a good deal at a position of need for two players that were not expected to stick around much longer.

Also, don't assume that Foster and Bell will be wearing Honolulu Blue come the fall. There's talk that either or both of them could be traded by the Lions, as Detroit tries to amass more picks in the April draft.
Bly is signed through 2007. He'll likely be the replacement in the starting lineup for Darrent Williams, who was shot and killed on January 1

I love how they always fall back to the argument that neither team has won a SB, so it's a wash. No, you gave up someone who is a borderline HOF if he retired today for a RB who was maybe Top 5 when you acquired him and is maybe Top 10 today.
Wish they didn't have to give up a 5th, but this is only considered an average draft so it's not huge. I wouldn't be surprised if they trade 3b on draft day for a 4th and a 5th.
Good trade for both teams, both got rid of players who were not part of their future.

Not all of them in that thread were that dumb but some of them need help. Bly isn't old and he has been to 2 Pro Bowls. Foster and Bell haven't. They also don't understand that Foster was benched here and was going to be a goner anyways. Bell can be replaced. Just like every other RB we've had. This is a nice move by the Bronocs, at least from initial appearances. We have to see the contract they are going to give Dre, but so far it looks good. Considering all of the draft picks and waste we have allocated to the CB position over the years, it would be great if we can keep things intact for 4-5 years. We thought we would havethat with Darrent and we should have.
What has it taken to get to this point:
1st rounder for Deltha
1st rounder for Middlebrooks
1st rounder for Foster, used to get Dre
2nd rounder for Portis, who was used to get Champ
2nd rounder from Wash used for Tatum, then used to get Dre
2nd rounder for Darrent, which was a tragedy, but impacted us having to make a move for Dre
5th rounder for Dre
So when I look at it, in order for us to get Dre and Champ, it has taken three 1st round picks, three 2nd round picks, and a 5th round pick. That is a lot of human capital. At this point, it is a sunk cost, but it would be nice to not have to worry about it for 5 more years or so.

Bottom Line: The broncos are a better team today, than yesterday........
Anyone who has watched film on #72 the last year and a half can tell you right off the top that the guy is a tremendous UNDERACHIEVING lazy offensive lineman. He didn't know all of his plays, he didn't react with the proper awareness, all he was and all he ever will be is a drive blocking specialist. Why did denver ever draft this guy? Some blame must go out to Shanny and the boys. Lets face it, the guy almost got Cutler killed last year, he didn't even block the guy.
As for Tatum, nobody inside Dove Valley ever imagined that he was that soft. They new he was soft, but not this soft. His ego was a problem, his injuries were a problem, his mindset was a problem. He couldn't catch, couldn't block in pass pro, just really soft. This team should have never let Mike Anderson go.
The good news is that the team had already decided to cut bait, so the next step was maximizing these two guys percieved value. Dre Bly in return is a huge success. Even better news comes in the form that this team already has replacements in mind. Eric Pears, Adam Meadows, a drafted/Free Agent will compete at Right Tackle. The broncos are going to draft a RB early, on day one and possibly add a free agent. We all know the track record there.
On defense bly immediately affects this club. Jim Bates likes to play aggressive, not passive like Larry C. Less zone, more Man to Man. Cover corners are a premium in his defense. Bailey and Bly will make recievers earn every yard in Man, they will be dangerous players to face. Teams will have to rely on the short quick passes to move the ball. Hopefully this means more blitzing by DJ and Ian, supplemented with bigger more athletic D-Lineman.
The draft must reap help at RB, Defensive Line, Safety, Offensive Tackle. The broncos have their 1st, 2nd, and two 3rd's to address these areas. Free agency will yield an impact player either at Tight End, or Defensive Line.
This is why its so great to be a Bronco Fan, they do what it takes to stay competitive! Admitting mistakes/failure is the first step to success.

My favorite post from that thread:
Kind of funny how most here were saying Bly is too old, and if we did get him we'd need Smoot backing him and we couldn't give up too much for Bly.
Now that Denver has him, they have the best secondary in the NFL? Giving up a tackle and running back isn't too much? If we had given up Betts and Pucillo for Bly, people here would be forming mobs and going after the FO. But Denver did good? Denver just got fleeced. Our deal for Portis looks much better than Detroit and Denver's deal.
Our FO was smart and backed out of the deal as to avoid giving up too much for Bly. They did something smart. Yet few are willing to praise them for a good move, but rather bash them for a forced-trade from 3 years ago.

In eight seasons, Dre Bly has intercepted 31 passes, forced 17 fumbles, and scored eight touchdowns (five interception returns, two fumble returns, one punt return). Last season Bly tied for the team lead with three interceptions and led the Lions with 18 passes defended and four forced fumbles.
The nicest thing about this trade is Dre Bly is EXACTLY the type of guy you want opposite Champ Bailey. He will not shrink from getting thrown at every week, he'll embrace it. He'll keep his head up when he gets beaten, and he'll make enough big plays nobody will care about his bad ones.
On one hand, we only gave up spare parts and a second day pick, but Tatum and Foster still have trade value and it will be interesting to see what Detroit gets for each one if they try to flip them for picks, as has been speculated.
I wish both of those guys the best. Tatum played some very good football for us. I'm sorry his career with the Broncos ended on a sour note. Turf toe can be a crippling injury for a speed back and he struggled trying to play through the pain. I still believe Foster's progress stopped after the Tony Williams injury and I think a new environment might do him a lot of good.

Lions CB Dré Bly Adopts Middle School to Help Improve Academics and School Infrastructure
By Ayana Richardson
Detroitlions.com
September 29, 2006
Bly spoke to the students at Longfellow Middle School on Tuesday.
DETROIT, Mich. -- As children we have dreams and goals that we set and hope to accomplish in life. They may seem unobtainable to some, but sometimes it takes a supportive role model who believes in our goals to make all the difference in our life and in our world.
One Detroit Lions’ player has taken the initiative to be dedicated to the dreams of the students at Longfellow Middle School in Detroit by being that supporter and believer in them. Lions’ cornerback Dré Bly has adopted Longfellow Middle School for the 2006-07 football season and school year.
Bly’s foundation, “The Dré Bly Foundation”, and the school’s principal are working together to create incentives to inspire students to achieve excellence during the school year. Longfellow was chosen by Bly’s foundation as the recipient of the “Dré Bly Playmakers Program,” that was set up to give kids the opportunity to experience the excitement of attending a Lions’ home game at Ford Field.
To show their appreciation and to welcome Bly into their family, Longfellow had a day entitled, “Dré Day at Longfellow”. This day happened on September 26, and was filled with events that brought cheer to Bly, the students, the staff and parents.
“Dré Day” featured an assembly at the school, which was filled with students and staff wearing a colorful button with Bly’s photo on it. Bly talked to the students about the things his foundation has planned for the school year. He presented the school with Lions’ home game tickets for the remainder of the 2006 NFL season and a certificate of commitment to the school for the year along with an autographed football and helmet.
The students performed cheers and songs as a part of the assembly to show their appreciation of Bly’s dedication to them and the school. The school also filled a trophy case with photos and memorabilia of Bly. Bly’s scheduled day at the middle school also included lunch with the students, a tour of the school and a competitive game of chess with one lucky student.
Not only on the side of education will Bly be focusing his efforts in improvement at Longfellow, but he will also be working on supplying the needs of a wish list that the school provided. Bly plans to have a fundraiser at Seldom Blues for the school and arrange donations around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Bly’s continuous support and involvement with Longfellow Middle School will give these students something to aspire to. Inspiration derives from encouragement and support from a positive role model that students can relate to. Bly is not only a positive role model and can share stories of his success, but is a sports image that young girls and boys admire and respect. Bly’s influence can be a driving force for excellence in the daily lives of the students at Longfellow Middle School that could ultimately result in a bright future and the accomplishments of numerous young peoples’ goals and dreams.

Looks like open competition for RB this year. I would venture that a Free agent is brought in on the cheap and our typical annual Draft RB. I'm obviously rooting for Mike, but if someone else makes their mark all the better. Tatum had his shot, I wish him well. He'll probably be dangerous again if he doesn't have to be the man.

I didn't search through all the pages, but doesn't Bly return punts? Just in case Hixon and Morgan don't work out. I mean it's dangerous to invest a lot in him for that, but it'd be a bonus, yet a risk. Got a great #2 corner and possibly a KR! Pretty great dump to add!

I was reading on ESPN and Jeremy Green believes that Detroit got the best of the deal. HIs argument was that Detroit is getting two starter and we are getting a decent corner but one that also gets beat too often. I think its a good trade, because Denver isn't losing two starters its just that Detroit sucks so much that our backups are their starters. So I guess a long story short who got the better end of the deal?
Please try and think of it from both standpoints.

Well, I'm gonna take this trade from the Lions perspective real quick:
1. They got a starting tackle(potentially).
2. Now they don't have to draft Joe Thomas and can draft Quinn or trade down.
3. They got insurance for if Jones isn't ok. (I know there are Tatum haters, b/c I'm one, but it's an upgrade over what they have).
4. Finally, th draft doesn't matter b/c Millen will prolly mess up and draft ANOTHER WR in Calvin Johnson.

Honestly, I think its a push - with slight edge to Detroit.
We traded 2 of our opening day 2006 starters and 1 draft pick - essentially 3 players - for one above average CB who was originally rumored to be had for a 3rd round pick.
Dont get me wrong, I believe the team is better having Bly - but I do think we kinda overpaid for him.
I wish we kept Tatum to package in another trade to move up the draft board, or have at least kept that 5th round pick.
3 players for one is tough to swallow. IMO he isnt a 'shutdown' guy simply because at 5'9" most of the AFC WRs tower over him.
But again, I do think our secondary has improved

Lions to swap draft picks, Bly for Broncos' RB Bell, lineman
March 1, 2007
By NICHOLAS J. COTSONIKA

Editor's note: Story updated at 4:50 p.m.
The Lions have agreed to trade cornerback Dré Bly and their sixth-round pick to the Broncos for running back Tatum Bell, right tackle George Foster and a fifth-round draft pick.
President Matt Millen declined to comment because the trade cannot be made officially until midnight tonight. Bly did not comment when reached by phone.
The Lions also agreed to a three-year contract with linebacker Alex Lewis and tendered five exclusive rights players and two restricted free agents. More moves are expected Friday.
The Lions will part with defensive end James Hall and tight end Marcus Pollard. If they cannot trade them, they will release them because they are due roster bonuses. There appears to be interest in Hall, but not in Pollard.
With the opening of the free-agent market, the Lions are expected to pursue wide receiver Kevin Curtis and defensive end DeWayne White. The Lions have needs at both positions. Curtis played for offensive coordinator Mike Martz when Martz was St. Louis’ head coach. White played for coach Rod Marinelli when Marinelli was Tampa Bay’s defensive line coach.
It is unclear what role – if any – Bell and Foster will play for the Lions and how acquiring them will affect the Lions’ off-season plans. They could be trade bait. They could play important roles.
Bell rushed for 1,025 yards last season, though he also fumbled five times. The Lions need insurance at running back because Kevin Jones has a serious foot injury. They are optimistic Jones will be ready for the regular-season opener, but they can’t be sure.
Foster, a first-round pick in 2003, has been inconsistent. The Lions already have Rex Tucker and Jonathan Scott at right tackle, and backup Barry Stokes can play right tackle, too.
The big question is how that might affect the Lions' No. 2 pick in the draft. Some had the Lions slated to take Wisconsin’s Joe Thomas and play him at right tackle. Will the Lions take him anyway and part with someone? Or does this mean they are more likely to try to trade down and address another position, such as defensive end?
Bly signed with the Lions as a free agent in 2003. He went to two Pro Bowls and was a first alternate for another in his first three years in Detroit. But after Marinelli arrived and installed the Tampa Two defense last season, Bly was less effective.
In the Tampa Two, Bly was supposed to play zone and stuff the run. But Bly is a pure cover corner and prefers man-to-man coverage. He will play opposite Champ Bailey for the Broncos, replacing Darrent Williams, who was shot and killed Jan. 1 in downtown Denver.
The Lions tendered five exclusive rights players: fullbacks Will Matthews and Sean McHugh, defensive linemen Claude Harriott and Langston Moore and offensive lineman Stephen Peterman. That means they offered them one-year deals to retain their rights.
They tendered two restricted free agents: longsnapper Don Muhlbach and cornerback Keith Smith. If Smith signs with another team, the Lions would receive a third-round pick. They did not tender defensive lineman Cleveland Pinkney, making him a free agent.

He doesn't very often. According to the espn player's page he returned three punts last year, and 1 kick. He didn't do any kick returning in '04 or '05.

I seriously doubt he'll see any playing time as a Lion. He will be like 3rd sting on the depth chart. More than likely he will be used as trade bait, and end up Rt for the Fade. Hilarious!
If Detroit was smart, they would draft Thomas still, kick Backus over to RT and play Foster at LG. Damian Woody can play at RG and they have Raiola at center. I would never let Foster protect the edge but he is a good enough athlete with enough size to hopefully become a impact player on the interior. Tatum is a spot player and better than some of the guys they have. Plus Martz could be better at using Tatum all over the field than Denver was.

Great trade by the Broncos. Essentially, they are getting rid of two players whom they have lost confidence in, and getting a pro-bowl CB and a draft pick. Not bad.
As for Foster and Bell leaving, I think Bell has a decent chance of becoming a good player on the turf in Detroit, esp. in that spread offense that Martz runs. As for Foster, I'm so disappointed in him, I'm just glad to see him gone.

I wanted to pawn Tatum off for a 3 or 4 (the market probably would have allowed only the latter, thats fine) and Foster for like a 6, rather then bring in another corner and pay him what would appear to be a relatively decent extension. We need picks not players. Bly is a good player, I don't mind the acquisition in the pure abstract, is he an upgrade over Fox? Prolly, but I would have rather gone with Fox and Paymah (and maybe bring in a cheap vet) rather than give away some assets that we could have turned into picks and now also we are going to have to pay Bly too.

I disagree with your premise that we need picks, not players. I think todays NFL is driven by playmakers, not constructing complete teams. Look at the two SB represntatives. If you were to break down their teams in terms of "needs" as we assess them on this board, you'd have a list as long as your arm. Look at Indy, in particular. Bob Sanders, a single playmaker, returns healthy to the lineup for the playoffs, and they miraculously go from being a sieve all season to being fairly stout. Adding a playmaker like Bly gives us a guy who, as Slap has noted, will embrace the extra activity he'll receive playing opposite Champ, and has the track record as a playmaker to suggest that going too much in his direction will result in extra trunovers. I think you'll see a 7-10 INT season from Bly next season. That will be huge. A 4th and 6th versus that type of playmaker is simply a no brainer, especially given the landscape of todays NFL.

Bly goes from the #1 corner to the #2 corner. Paymah & Foxy make damn good young, cheap backups. I'm glad Denver didn't send picks for him. Yes, it's still unkown that a 2nd day pick is included. But, atleast it's not a 1st day pick. I'm warming up to the trade. DW got burnt so many times it made me barf. I'm not bagging on him, but that is how I felt during the season. Obviously he had room for improvement and was young with upside, and the unexpected death which sucked. Make no mistake though his play did piss me off during the season.

I trolled some of the Lions message boards and they are mostly pleased with this deal. The good news for us is that many are sad to see Bly go and don't believe he was a bad player but that he was in a poor situation (Tampa Cover 2) that didn't fit his style. I agree. Anyway, in trades such as these I get nervous because sometime you don't wonder if people think the guy is garbage (or in the 'Skins case, think as soon as someone isn't a Redskin they aren't good anymore).

I look at it like this. Rucker is a solid DE, but when Peppers got there he became that much better. If we can find someone like that in the draft then I'm willing to bet that Ekuban has a career year and we will still get a good amount of sacks from Vil and Lang.

I agree that it's nice to have another playmaker on D, it's a big deal to me too. But SoCal is right that the FO will have to pay out a lot of money for 2 CB's like Bly and Bailey over the next 4-5 years. Rod Smith may end up getting cut to pay for those two and whatever other FA's the Broncos want, if he doesn't restructure.
