Atlanta (WXIA) - A 2001 teen comedy movie named "Sugar & Spice" depicted a group of high school cheerleaders as bank robbers. Now, in the Atlanta area, the robbery is for real and police say it isn't funny.
"That's what I thought of when I saw the photos," said Cobb County Police Officer Wayne Delk. But he added that real bank robbery can be a federal crime with serious prison time.
The photos Delk mentioned show two young women, possibly as young as 16, robbing the Bank of America branch inside a Kroger grocery store on Mars Hill Road in Acworth around 12:15 Tuesday afternoon. Dressed in casual clothes, the brunette and blonde only wore sunglasses to disguise themselves. The blonde even smiled as they handed the teller a note demanding money. They didn't show a weapon and left with "an undetermined amount of cash," according to Officer Delk.
"It's extremely unusual to see young female bank robbers", says Delk. It's not known if the pair left in a vehicle. But Delk says the photos are so good police are hoping someone will recognize them and turn them in.
"They do actually, appear to be, like this is all fun and games," Delk added, but pointed out there are stiff penalties for such crimes.
Last year an 18-year-old Pennsylvania boy got an 11-year sentence for bank robbery. Just last week, two 17-year-old boys were caught shortly after allegedly robbing a bank in Douglas County.
