Now pretend killing yourself hasn't worked. You can't get out. So let's say you're stuck as the man that calls the shots in the organization.
Do you really draft Russell? Think about it.
Their line is total garbage. Do you really want a blue-chip guy like that to come in when he's just going to get killed every play? Bringing in a young rookie who will be like a deer in headlights most of the year will not help keep your sacks down even if you can upgrade things.
And who on their team is good enough to tutor quarterbacks and develop a talent like that. Ordinarily I'd say Norv Turner, but you know about that...
What do you do?

Lets say killing myself was a success? the rest is downhill.

I stage an auction for the 1st pick. Move down, get as many O-Lineman as possible, trade for Carr with my 4th round pick, and maybe try to sign Drew Bennett and Eric Johnson. I spend zero picks on defense.

Seriously whatever the raiders do it's going to be a mess the team mojo is a complete joke and not one ounce of pride is left on that organization. The new coach looks like another loser i don't see much coming from him next season sadly the owner just needs to die hes become his own teams worse nightmare.

Lets pretend I'm the Raiders...
Ok, first, get gang members to gloss your gear
Then get Grandma to take charge of your team
Then hire a staff that was last relevant when the "Other" Bush was president
Then draft your team starting with druggie kickers and Superbowl has-beens
Then finish in the bottom-tier of the NFL for 5 years.
Ok, I'm close to being the Oakland Raiders...
Do I dare draft any player that could possibly make a difference? Hmmm. in a word? Only if that player could make a difference in the NFL Euro.

We don't want that to happen, the team might actually improve.
But to stay on topic, that's what I would do.

You suck...seriously...this is the football version of the Kobayashi Maru. So to win the no win senario...you have to cheat.

Wow. Nicely done.
I'm seriously wondering what the "right" answer is. I don't think Russell will help them. No QB will; they need protection.

They have no QB and Russell would be an excellent pick.
But so would trading down and adding OL and maybe a FA QB (Garcia or Kitna if Lions draft Quinn)
Next year they will be top 5 again, so they can then add Brohm.

What was the the big game(s) Russel won to deserve to be the #1 overall pick? I forgot.
But, he can throw the football very far. He is a perfect fit for that amazing downfield passing game the Raiders display every Sunday.

Take a QB at #1 because you need someone to really want #1 to make it worth trading down and I don't think anyone is that desperate now. Now you can get a good OL at 33 and another with the 3rd rounder. You could trade moss for another pick but I would try and talk Porter and Moss into buying into Kiffins system which probably will be hard since both of those two have more NFL experience.

Kaylore, you'll be getting my medical bill in the mail. I tried this little experiment of pretending to be the Raiders, and I'm now on numerous anti-depressants.
Thanks a lot, jerk.

I say trade down for 2-3 more first & 2nd round picks. Get a whole bunch of o-lineman. Work ur butt off to resign Randy Moss. Trade for David Carr. Draft or sign a FA wide receiver. Ur defense is pretty good

Russell fits their offense perfectly. There's no way you pass on him.

Seriously, I'd be very torn about this if I was the Raiders. They desperately need that key QB that will learn quick, and the growing pains will be beyond terrible given the lack of protection he's likely to have.
Personally, I'd trade down and address other gaping needs first. A QB is a luxury that they just cant afford until they assure themselves a quality backbone protection to start with IMO.

Do you really draft Russell? Think about it.
If you believe Russell's the truth than you pull the trigger. You have too.. you'll likely never be in that position again.
Their line is total garbage.
I fault the dopey Art Shell/Tom Walsh "lead step" system rather than using the drop step in pass pro like every other NFL team is taught. That **** didnt work in the 90's either, with better OL and a vet savy QB.
I suspect Tom Cable will do a better job, as he's actually coached in this milenium.

4/5ths of these guys started the previous season and didnt look nearly as bad.
And who on their team is good enough to tutor quarterbacks and develop a talent like that. Ordinarily I'd say Norv Turner, but you know about that...
WTF are you talking about.. USC ****s out franchise Quarterbacks practically every other year... ?
I mean who did the Rat develop? He had a HOF guy fall into his lap, then he broke out the Penn and Teller smoke and mirrors to hide Plummer behind center for a few seasons
What do you do?

He got Griese and Plummer to the pro-bowl.
Re-read that and then ask your question again. He'd probably make Brooks look all-world.

Draft Brady Meier so you are insured of having next year's first pick.

Russell has huge upside, but I agree with your premis that it'd be a wasted pick because the entire team is so bad, esp. the offense and offensive line.
The smart thing for the dumbazz faiders to do is trade down and stockpile picks. That's what a smart GM would do. But thank the good Lord above, the faiders are run by a crypt keeper who's too egotistical to see his own ineptitude.

Sadly, I think they will draft JR. I'm so torn on this. Objectively, what they need to do is sign atleast two OL, draft JR, draft OL #33, RB in round three, more OL, maybe receiver, TE, kicker. I hope that they draft CJ
Oh and whoever asked which big games JR has won...try top tens:Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, #15 Arizona State after Katrina, Sugar Bowl against #11 ND, and plenty others.

Condoms are free across the Bay, in the bars of the Castro district.
Who knows, maybe the Raiders could find their next tight end and some happy wide receivers on the same trip.

Draft him. Some how I don't see the Raiders going his whole career without talent around him. Plus the Raiders D is much much much better then anyone around here thinks.

Pretend you're the Oakland Raiders...
I tried and tried. I just can't do it. Just trying, somehow, feels unclean and unworthy. Silly little plastic pirate swords. . . Arghhhh matey . . . pirate eyepatches . . . "commitment to . . .hahahahaha" (can't even finish that one) . . . stupid biker regalia with skulls. So I stopped trying. There. That's better.
