View Full Version : How do you pay the bills?

I'm just curious on this one...for those of you living together/married ... Do you have a joint account or separate account in which each of you pay some of the bills. My sister's both have joint accounts as do my parents, but a lot of my friends...that are married...still treat the bills as 50/50. Or do you have a joint account for bills and your own separate accounts for other stuff. Do you keep your name on stuff that you had before you were married or change it to both of your names. How does it work at your house?

Back when I was married, my wife thought the money I brought home was Our Money and the money that she made was Her Money...can't understand why I am divorced.

In our family everything is "ours"; not "his" or "mine". Well, except "his" golf clubs. I have no interest whatsoever in those. Ha!

Me to. The money I make is the money I spend and I spend it on
whatever I want to with no one else complaining.

We have seperate accounts and try to split things up as evenly as possible... Got started out this way because of a legal situation I was in when we first started out married thanks to my insurance company screwing me over. We never changed it, and it seems to work for us.

Rule #1 - Never, ever co-sign a loan for anyone no matter who they are.

Rule #2 - Never, ever have a joint checking/savings account with anyone no matter who they are.

Joint account only. We've never worried about separate accounts. Just tell each other about the "silly stuff" we buy. So long as you communicate it's not a problem. Been this way for nearly 10 years. The only problem we've ever had is deciding who was going to actually pay the bills. Now I do it online and it takes 5 minutes so it's not that big of a deal... before though, man we used to argue over bills. Not the cost but who's sending them out in the mail. Thank goodness for online checking!

I think it has a lot to do with how you're raised...did your parents do it the same way you are?

No, my parents always had separate accounts.

Joint and everything that can be is on auto-pay via the credit card. Credit card is then paid off monthly from the joint checking account.

not from personal experience but the word from the street and one reliable friend confirmed she waits until that final final final notice to deal with the lights, cable, phone companies.

It took an act of congress to get the current utilities in my name in the house I am at b/c the owner is in an assisted living housing. I was thinking this thread was more along the lines of electronically or through snail mail. And most of my bills are paid thru online payment or me driving to the office to pay (utility and cable apply here). Yes being in Arkansas we get a post card size bill and forget online payment although they do have drive thru for payment.

The thing that sucks aboutpaying online is computer problems. Yeah one time I paid my car note on line and the button took a while and then I got four emails messages they accepted my 200 dollars. I freaked out b/c I couldn't afford a 800 dollar bill at the time but lucky most on line payments is delayed at least 24 hours so you can modify it and so I deleted three of the four payments. (customer service department helped me).

Computer problems that way...and NO ACCESS at all. Right now my computer has been acting up for a month~can't sign in to anything~ so I have no email at all and can't buy anything online. Hey, at least I have access to the Mane! But anyway...If I had to pay bills online now, I wouldn't be able to at this point.

For excitement I mail my estimated income tax voucher on the day it is due. And see how long it takes for it to clear.

No email that is so sad. When I moved and didn't have service connected to the present place it was about three days wait with out internet, cable, phone. I was depressed. My parents laughed at me b/c when the cable guy came I was so happy again. They said I was experiencing withdraws. I am a creature of comfort and love internet, cable. Would be lost with out it. Is it a computer problem or service problem?

My one and only V-day date was going to I hop and walking out b/c it was so God awful slow and then going to Applebees and afterwards going to Baskin Robbins I excused myself to go to the restroom and when I came out I saw a sad girl drowning her sorrow in a quart of ice cream and then saw it was my date!! I work every V day now so no depressed feelings for me.

I think it's a "windows" problem (quit laughing POPPS!) Anyway, I tried to update media player and now I'm getting a "this copy of windows may be counterfeit! Anyway, I had it into a computer shop before this and he had to reload windows. I'm thinking that has something to do with it. No matter. I'm thinking about a new computer anyway. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I can, however, access my email off of any other computer. It's sign-in that I'm having a problem with on mine.

I am getting a new computer this summer when vista has settled down and bugs and glitches worked out. Right now I am experiencing some stuff working better on Explorer and most other stuff working on Firefox. Use Firefox for all bill payments though.

I have a yahoo account and hotmail account. My computer worked fine until I tried to update Media Player... It keeps telling me my copy of windows might be counterfeit and won't let me update anything windows related or sign-in to any accounts. I can't sign into MSN either...don't know for sure how I'm getting online...just hitting signin and when it dials (yeah, I know) I go to google and search for The Mane and it gets me here. It's weird.

No...it won't let me either...I get "page cannot be displayed" as usual.
I refused to take it in for 75 bucks an hour and have to reload windows AGAIN for 3 hours. It's not worth it.

It's all mine!!! Kidding.

I don't work, so he makes the money and I spend it. :D I have to admit I'm really shocked there are so many people that are married that have the whole separate account thing going on.

He does do a lot of side work and recently opened an account for the business part of it, so we could easily sort it out come tax time. That money is his to do with what he wants. In the beginning we didn't have the luxury of that because every penny counted. He's been trying to save up for a decent pick up for a couple of years now, and after he opened that account, he had saved up quite a bit of money. I wanted to get braces. I had it all figured out how we were going to pay for it, and he came to me and said he was paying for it with his side money. Awwwww. Whatta guy!

For me it's committment. 100% of what we both get goes into the joint account. I have a setup for work funds for expenses.

We don't charge unless we have the cash to pay for it when the statement comes. She grew up with barely enough money for expenses, I grew up in a family that borrowed every chance they had. I learned from my wife how to handle finances, we have benefited from the lessons.

The other half of the committment is a financial wizard. We were able to payoff our 30 year mortgage in 15 years. We've been able to pay cash for the last 3 cars we've bought.

I guess what works for each is what works.
