Cartoon Network head resigns after Boston bomb scares
By Globe Staff

The general manager of the Cartoon Network resigned today as the fallout continues to grow from a botched guerilla marketing campaign that sparked a series of bomb scares last week in Boston.

Jim Samples told colleagues today in an e-mail provided to the Globe that he deeply regretted "the negative publicity" spawned by the blinking cartoon characters meant to publicize the animated show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" and saw no other choice but to leave the network after 13 years.

"As general manager of Cartoon Network, I feel compelled to step down, effective immediately, in recognition of the gravity of the situation that occurred under my watch," Samples wrote in the e-mail.

Almost 40 of the devices were placed on bridges, underpasses, and other pieces of infrastructure throughout metropolitan Boston and were mistaken for possible bombs when people saw wires and circuit boards.

Why should he be persecuted, I mean prosecuted when Bostonians were just retarded?

Every advertising target was also a terrorism target.

Don't put electronic crap under bridges and the like. Period.

Seriously, the idea was dumb, but the reaction by those idiots up north was worse.

Kudos to you, GB. You get it.

Hell, nobody thought sneakers would be bombs either.

Sorry, but I agree with the sweet smelling Urinal cake. I think that Bostonians are overreacting to this. And Patswin, if shoes can be bombs too, should we get freaked out because we found some Nikes under a bridge? Should we have the head of Nike step down? Gimme a break.

The reaction to one device was justifiable. After discerning that it was not a bomb and also being told by the network that it was their stuff, the reaction was retarded. The guy shouldn't step down and nobody should be prosecuted.

Could you please explain to me how putting a LED panel with a cartoon character in a public place is a prank?, They had no intention to make it look like a bomb, there was no intention to deceive.

"I think that the marketing company should at the very least apologize for what they did."

Its like someguy making a barbecue in his own backyard, then some neighbors see smoke and yell FIRE!, call 911, then the FD rush to the house, stop the traffic, etc. And somehow the guy should apologize?

Good. He's an idiot anyway.

I mean, my God, they've dropped Samurai Jack, Justice League, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Johnny Bravo and every decent creative animated effort that has crossed their desk, and what do we get?

Aqua Teen Freakin' Hunger Force.

My Gym Partner's a Freakin' Monkey.

Squirrel Freakin' Boy.

Xiaolin Freakin' Showdown.

Ed, Edd and Freakin' Eddy.

Camp Freakin' Lazlo.

Prince of Freakin' Tennis.

Nar- freakin' - uto.

What a bunch of crap. This dude's been sniffin' way too many crayon shavings.

They dropped those? I liked those. No wonder there never seems to be
anything any good on there anymore.

The things weren't actually bombs...what could he possibly be charged with?

Just an innocent mix-up. I'm glad he's resigning for the reasons Old Dude listed.

Great post. I can remember when cartoon Network used to be fun to watch, and now we have cartoons about fast food and freakin' soft drinks? Who could possibly find that crap entertaining?

I think this guy should be put in jail for broadcasting the garbage that is Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Funny how you know the whole lineup Florida, including cancelled shows. I couldn't even tell you how to find the Cartoon Channel without looking it up. I watch things like the Simpsons and Family Guy and Futurama, most other things are nothing but toddler fodder.

Old Dude posted the lineup Mock, not me. I'm a big Simpsons fan myself and it's really the only animated show I watch now.

Fair enough Florida...the last old style cartoon that was rather funny was the Flintstones. Just once I wish the skeptic on Scoobie Doo would actually be bafftled by some phenomenon....of course, the speckled one always caught the old man behaving strangely.

I just don't get Boston's reaction to this. Before acting like a bunch of chickens with their heads cut off, they could have done a little thing called "investigation."

I fricken love Aqua Teen Hunger Force. It's the type of ironic humor that I love. Though, Season 4 was pretty hit and miss. I think they're running out of ideas.

It was still a poor decision because it's a post 9/11 world. Noone likes it. With bombs going off like firecrackers overseas in several countries, safe is better than sorry. I'm sure he will get a nice severeance package.

BTW...4 car bombs attacked a red cross hospital last night in Kashmir in N. Pakistan.

i already said my piece about this on the original thread. this didnt happen in any of the other cities. i still hear it described as a prank on the news. a prank? not even close.just a publicity scheme gone wrong. publicity stunt isnt even accurate.
sending anyone to jail(well maybe not dreadlocks dumbass) over this would be like prosecuting the WKRP staff for not knowing turkeys couldnt fly.

Actually they did this in New York as well. You know, New York City - the place that was actually bombed. Authorities removed the devices without incident.

Of course they were terrorism targets. A location becomes a terrorist target because it is highly populated or highly trafficked. If the location didnt fit those characterizations, it would defy the point of advertising.

thats what i meant. in all the other cities that the lite brites were placed, only in boston did they panic. i wonder if the lite brites would have had cartoon network stickers on them, the boston braniacs still wouldnt have gotten it.
if the authorities in boston cant even understand american culture, how the hell are they ever going to figure out the muslim terrorists and stop the next attack?

To put it into perpective what if the Boston tea party was now a days. We would be scared to death that unknown brown substance washing ashore and turning water to a light brown color. Terrorism. Freakish algae. Global warming to blame. ETC. Everyone needs to laugh again.

Kinda being hard on people in Boston .......... Sure they over reacted , but Boston is busy place , alot of good going in and out , rich in history , could very well be a terrorist target .........The Cambrige market is just as huge as any Market in houston and Cali ......... Hunts point is about the largest market I have ever been in
