Looks like they might, guess we'll have to target somebody else in FA.
DE Justin Smith's agent, Jim Steiner, said Thursday that the Bengals want to keep him. So it wouldn't be a surprise if the Bengals decide to franchise Smith by the Feb. 22 deadline even though it would cost them $8.6 million this year. If the Bengals make Smith their franchise player, it would virtually take him off the market because compensation is two first-round draft picks. Steiner said Smith won’t fight the tag and it gives the Bengals’ incentive to get a long-term deal done before July 16. Tagging Smith would probably take the Bengals out of the hunt for any of the big names in free agency.

Sucks for me. I wanted that guy bad. The thing about him is that you can't judge him by just sacks. Watch him game in and game out affecting all aspects of their defense from taking up blocks, to his motor, to the impact he can have rushing the passer.
The Bengals would be wise to tag him.
If they don't, we would be wise to try and sign him. He would solidify one of our starting d-line spots into a strength.

IMHO Kerney is the only top-mid tier DE we'll have any chance of landing.

They couldn't let him go. Their front seven would be an even bigger joke next year without him, even with O'Dumbass Thurman coming back.

Denver will not sign top dollar FA's anyways.
Denver will not sign top dollar FA's anyways.
I'm sure that Smith wants his scratch but I would bet he is willing to take a little less money for an organization that is always in the hunt, does things the right way and will give him some added talent to play with.
That sounds right up Denver's alley.
If we don't ask, we'll never know. We would have to spend a little to get him but in getting an every down defensive end, I would be willing to fork over the jack. We haven't had a completely player here on the defensive line since Pryce was healthy four years ago. Even then, we didn't have any talent around him. I believe that Warren is better than last season as long as he can stay healthy and we get some players around him at DT and DE. Along with our LB's wearing down as the season went along, i'm sure our star-studded two man rotation at DT was a little spent since we only had 3 players there for most of the season.

I also read the Lions coach reall wants Cory Redding back. Wonder if there are are willing to Tag him to?
Lions coach Rod Marinelli is pushing for the team to re-sign DE Cory Redding. "Believe me, if there's a band marching, I'm the band director on this one. I'm marching full straight ahead on this," Marinelli said. "He's a guy I just, I have to have back here." Somewhere, Redding's agent is smiling. Jan. 24 - 8:16 am et Detriot Free Press
