Limbaugh returns to football analysis: "[T]hey're dumping on" Grossman "because he is a white quarterback"
Listen to the MP3 (http://mediamatters.org/static/audio/limbaugh-20070205-football.mp3)
On the February 5 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Rush Limbaugh, responding to media coverage of Chicago Bears quarterback Rex Grossman, stated "they're dumping on this guy -- Rex Grossman -- for one reason, folks, and that's because he is a white quarterback." Limbaugh later insisted in conversation with a caller that, "they just want this guy not to do well 'cause he's a white quarterback," and that Grossman was "targeted for destruction." The Bears lost to the Indianapolis Colts 29-17 in Super Bowl XLI.
Limbaugh was forced to resign from his position as a football analyst for ESPN in 2003 after he claimed that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was overrated because "[t]he media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well." The following season, McNabb led his team to the Super Bowl.
Several weblogs took note of Limbaugh's comments, including American Princess, Night Bird's Fountain, and Skull/Bones.
From the February 5 broadcast of Premiere Radio Networks' The Rush Limbaugh Show:
LIMBAUGH: And before we go to the break here, folks, I've got to get something off my chest. You know, the game was the game. And the game was what it was. But I - I can't handle anymore press criticism of Rex Grossman. They're writing his name W-R-E-C-K-S. They're just -- worst quarterback ever to play in the Super Bowl. And it's been like this since the Green Bay game -- actually since the Arizona game, a little crescendo of it in the Green Bay game, the last game of the season for the Bears. And it's just unrelenting! It's just -- they're focusing on this guy like they don't focus on anybody! And I tell you, I know what it is. The media, the sports media, has got social concerns that they are first and foremost interested in, and they're dumping on this guy -- Rex Grossman -- for one reason, folks, and that's because he is a white quarterback.
[...]
CALLER: But, I also wanted to say that I appreciated the fact that you were having some compassion for Grossman. I sat there last night watching the game and I felt sorry for him. He is a Hoosier, by the way. His grandfather played for the Baltimore Colts.
LIMBAUGH: Yeah.
CALLER: And I -- you know, he's a young guy. You know, it's a team effort.
LIMBAUGH: It's, yeah, they're just all over this guy. They can't wait for this guy to fail. They are hoping he fails.
CALLER: Yes, they're terrible.
LIMBAUGH: They're talking about before the game, they're talking about him as the worst quarterback ever to play in the Super Bowl and they're asking [Bears head coach] Lovie Smith all during the week, "When are you going to bench the guy, Lovie? At what point in the game?" And that's the only time Lovie Smith apparently lost his cool a little bit during the week with, with media sessions. You know what this is: The media - you, you know the social things. I don't need to go into this.
CALLER: Well --
LIMBAUGH: They, they just want this guy not to do well 'cause he's a white quarterback.
CALLER: Even during the game last night. Before, before they went on the air they were all saying who they were going to pick and why and everything and when the, you know, the - they made their first runback with the score - then they started turning the tables on everything. It's like, "Now, wait a minute. I heard what you said before the game started." You know? Now they're changing tunes because --
LIMBAUGH: Well, because they're -- no -- they were all acting surprised. Everybody was acting, "Whoa. Grossman can actually complete a pass. Why nobody thought this would happen. Let's stop everything and give him the MVP now. He actually completed a pass." But he came through for them in the end. All those fumbles. The wounded-duck interceptions. He gave them the copy they wanted to write today all last week.
CALLER: Well --
LIMBAUGH: They were hoping to write that Grossman was an embarrassment and that Lovie Smith needs to seriously bring in somebody to compete with him next training camp. I can, look it, I feel for the guy. He's, apparently, bores, bears up under it rather well or has borne up under it rather well or so his teammates say and so forth. But the guy's been targeted for destruction.

Mariotti, you damned racist!
Can't ignore Grossman's shortcomings
<!-- Article Publsih Date -->February 5, 2007
<!-- Article By Line -->BY JAY MARIOTTI (inbox@suntimes.com) Sun-Times Columnist
<!-- boxscore --><!-- Article's First Paragraph --><!--dropstart-->MIAMI -- So, who's ignorant now? Rex Grossman called out the analysts who wondered why he throws hideous interceptions and fumbles simple snaps, then responded in his defining game by throwing hideous interceptions and fumbling simple snaps. When challenged to win a sterling silver trophy in the fourth quarter, Bad Rex played like he didn't belong. And if that's harsh, let me remind him it was the Super Bowl and that he may never return again.<!--dropend-->
While I might be ''ignorant'' about some things, I know you can't win a championship without a quarterback. That is especially true when Peyton Manning is cutting that meat, audibilizing and waving like a madman, confusing Brian Urlacher and punishing the defense with big downfield passes and handoffs and flips to robust Indianapolis running backs who softened the brawny, big-city defenders. In the end, the difference between experiencing a confetti tornado and becoming one of those quickly forgotten runners-up was that the Bears tried to convince us they had a real quarterback when smart people knew they did not.
Ignorant? Bad choice of words, Rex. Very bad.
''We had a chance to win the game, and we just didn't have it,'' Grossman said. ''I'd like to have the two interceptions back. I don't have any excuses.''
Good. Because he would have misfired on those, too.
We will remember these Bears for a nice season, but also for not backing up their smack in the roman-numeraled cojones test. Long live the 1985 legends. We sensed all season that this team was vulnerable and living a little too large, and its holes were exposed in a 29-17 loss to the smarter, more physical and better-coached Colts. Shut up already, huh? Grossman and Urlacher made brash boasts that seemed unnecessary and turned out embarrassing. It's beyond me why Urlacher took on the '85 Bears, basically saying he was sick of their grip on Chicago culture and wanted ''our own identity.''
Seems an apology is in order. This team was another heartbreaker, full of hiss and vinegar but ultimately full of you know what. As Manning the football scholar strategized and, I'm sure, sometimes teased the Bears with his barking at the line, Urlacher looked panicked, responding with his own pointing and gesticulating but rarely getting results. Manning ran a clinic, and the Bears lacked consistent answers. Maybe they would have had more with Tommie Harris and Mike Brown, but the evening seemed preordained for Colts coach Tony Dungy, a fine man who has endured hell and deserves a championship after so many years of falling short.
The criticism won't stop Afterward, Urlacher and Grossman sat side by side in a damp concrete room. After walking slowly from the locker room with his head slumped, Urlacher answered questions softly at the podium and revealed watery eyes, looking devastated. Grossman tried to keep a stiff upper lip, but as CBS' Jim Nantz said on the telecast, he is going to take loads of national criticism now.
The last interception? ''It got away from me. It was about 10 yards to the right and maybe needed about 10 more yards,'' he said. ''It was a poor throw.''
The killer fumbled snap? ''It was a good snap. My hands were right there,'' he said. ''It kind of slid right out of there.''
Did the rain affect him? ''It was the same for both quarterbacks,'' he said. ''You won't hear me make excuses and say things like I'm a guy in his first full season. We're going to have a great team next year. If people don't see that, it doesn't matter.''
There he goes again, challenging ''people.'' When asked about his ''ignorant'' comment, he said he ''was just being honest'' and muttered something about not remembering it.
Most frustrating about a feeble offensive performance -- five turnovers, 11 first downs, 10 points after Devin Hester's smashing touchdown return of the opening kickoff -- was that the Bears were starting with great field position. Because the Colts feared kicking to Hester, they squibbed to upbacks. But one, two, three and out -- the Bears couldn't capitalize. The master plan was to run all night on the Colts, but except for an early 52-yard burst by Thomas Jones, the idea went awry, partially because Cedric Benson left with a knee problem. They needed the QB to win them a Super Bowl. He did not. Manning did, elevating himself to legendhood and retiring the gorilla forevermore.
''The quarterback has a lot of influence on a football game,'' said Muhsin Muhammad, who caught an early TD flip from Grossman but had only two more catches. ''His decision-making, his ballhandling -- all those things factored in the game.''
The talk coming in was about money: Lovie Smith deserving a fat contract extension, Ron Rivera needing bigger pay to keep him away from the Cowboys, even Grossman angling for a lucrative new deal. Smith will get his, but Halas Hall would be nuts to reward Rex and not open the competition to Brian Griese in July. When the fourth quarter called for efficient, dynamic leadership, the gunslinger just winged the ball foolishly. Earlier, with the game up for grabs in the driving rain, he suffered successive 11-yard losses, tripping over his feet on one play and fumbling the next snap.
To be fair, Grossman is a young player who never should have been in this position and had no chance in this mismatch. Also, the Bears went 56 actual minutes between offensive snaps, having to wait out the marksmanship of Manning and the halftime screams of Prince. And so much for the theory rain would favor the Chicago team and hurt the dome team.
The Bears had their butts kicked and their brains picked.
Which means -- gulp -- that Denny Green was right. We will not crown their asses.
Little help for Hester
And to think it started so magnificently. Hester walked calmly to the end zone before the opening kickoff, waving his hands to fans and pointing to the Bears logo on the ground. His turf, his team, his city, his Super Bowl? Adam Vinatieri kicked the ball near the left sideline, but it didn't deter Devin From Heaven. He cut back to the middle, instinctively flowed through a hole, blew past a diving Vinatieri and didn't allow a Colt to touch him until he was tackled around the ankles in the other end zone. As the stadium rumbled with Bearphoria, a replay showed Hester looking at himself on the Jumbotron as he covered the final 20 yards.
Alas, he had little help from his team.
The good news: A talented nucleus remains in place.
The bad news: Rex is an enigma. You hope he'll spend the offseason studying Peyton Manning tapes and not moping about critics who, it seems, weren't so ignorant after all.

The local station here runs conservative talk all the time, from Medved to Hannity and of course the EIB network.
I'm a moderate conservative, but PigBoy has been steadily digressing into total insanity. Comments like there is no global warming, Polar Bears are migrating to IceLand, how we should increase pollution to warm the earth. I think he's found some designer drug or something.
Grossman, Black or White, had 5 plays that were horrific, all at crusial times. First, he escapes pressure and has a clear line of sight and might of gotten the first. Instead, he throws into double coverage along the sideline. Second, when crunch time came around, he falls down for a 7 yard loss,,,followed by a fumble that rolled thru his legs. Punt. They were in plus territory. Then came the infamous underthrow to the wrong shoulder, a total duck...the moose was wide open. Late, underthrown and too much loft. Finally, the CB doesn't bite on the stop and go, yet he throws it anyway right into a pitch and catch to the CB.
That is 4 drive killers right there.

Limbaugh isn't making much sense.
Because he's not being serious.
One of his catchphrases is "illustrating absurdity by being absurd." Apparently TJ and Media Matters don't get that. This is his way of tweaking the media over the Donovan McNabb flap that got him fired from ESPN.
I wouldn't have suggested going there over this one but I think he's trying to say that the media lustily rips into white quarterbacks but refuse to be so harsh with black quarterbacks. After all, when was the last time you heard the media tear into a black quarterback the way they've ripped into Grossman?
He frequently says things he doesn't mean in an attempt to be funny or to be provocative. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If you just pull quotes from "watchdog" groups instead of listening to the show, you'll never understand when he's serious and when he's not.

You mean the drug addled Limbaugh? The one who always used to say "FemiNazi" whatever the ****that meant?
I'm not sure what his point is (he rarely has any) but I will agree the Chicago media is the most childish and unprofessional I've ever seen. Even the headers of their super bowl coverage is silly. It's like they're trying to talk Grossman into failure so it can justify what they say. Sure, we know the guys been inconsistent. But this endless obsession with ripping him makes me wonder. Just what's the agenda in Chicago? Run the guy out? Then what, 100 yard 50 completion passing games by Orton? They'll be whining about that, too. The problem isn't Limbaugh (who's basically a cartoon character anyway) the problem is the loser mindset of Chicago in general when it comes to sports. They're frontrunners, despite having a rich sports history. The lovable losing Cubs syndrome. Endless hype on the one hit wonder 85 bears. If thats what you still cling to, then wallow in your misery. How fake are the folk in Chi town? Most of them expected their team to lose. Well, you got what you wanted. So why be upset? Just wallow in your tradition of pain, which is something you're good at. Never mind your defense sucked. After all, TRADITION says Chi teams always have great defense. So we ignore it even when they don't. Just rip Grossman! Everything will be cool, then. So what if Urlacher and crew got run over like an express train. So what? All that matters is that Grossman stinks, right? If the Defense was giving it up in the third quarter did it ever occur to these Mo-RONS that it would be WORSE in the fourth? Duh.
BTW, funny how Big Ben was pumped because he managed a ring. Know what his qb rating in his super bowl 'win' was? 22! Barely at 100 yards and two picks. The Steelers win and he's hot stuff. Romo? Crashed to earth like all inexperienced qbs. Young goes to the pro bowl because he runs around. Geez, I thot qbs were paid to THROW but that's me being silly. His rating should be through the roof. I mean if you don't throw you can't have picks, right? On and on...someone needs to tell the media in Chicago to GROW UP. Its like they sit in a circle and say "hee, let's f*** with Grossman one more time! Write another 'bum' article! Make more silly nicknames! Paralysis by analysis...get in his head! Read his mind! Explain why he'll be a failure! and so forth and so on.
I would love to hear Shanahan's take on Grossman. Anybody with an objective view not prone to hysteria. The only clear voices on the matter seem to be the coaches, Lovie Smith and Ron Turner the O coordinator. Wanna roll out tape of all these so called 'great' qbs their first year? You might be frightened. :pimp:

His comment about McNabb wasn't totally untrue.....all he said was that the media was desirous for a black QB to have great success. I agree. Just like they were spooging over a black coach finally winning the big game. Why can't people stop pointing out that Dungy and Lovie are black? Who cares? Why can't we just agree that they are great coaches? Why the need to constantly point out their skin color?
I know the media loves to THINK Rush is a racist.....yet I've never seen/heard strong proof that he is.....hating racial PANDERING doesn't mean you're a racist. I hate racial pandering, as should everyone.

The "meat"?
There's some "meat" there? I just thought you were being a good samaritan and "helping people out here" that just don't get it but I guess I could be wrong.
Yeah, there was substance......
You, I'm sure, are one of the many who claim Rush is a racist.....I ask for proof, while at the same time telling you he has a black fill-in, which would (to the logical person) somewhat prove that he is NOT......you, of course, have no comment.....that was my point.

Ocassionaly I get him when in the car...listen to this...
"I say absurd things to illustrate absurdity..."
His exact words...I couldn't believe it. As if half his crap isn't allready absurd! I'm a moderate conservative, but damn...there is a difference between conservative and pompous facism and racism.
I love the "I was just being absurd to show absurdity" routine.
Then he goes to a caller and tells him go get off the line and explain everything to him...a brit...it's funny because his own staff didn't put him off the air...the guy was ripping him a new A-Hole for good reason. But he was going to "explain" how being absurd exemplifies the absurdities. I think he's on drugs again.
I've always found him amusing honestly, but he's gotten so far out there he makes Andy Rooney RIP sound coherent.

You guys crack me up. Maybe we should crush some of those pills into a Cuervo black, and EVERYONE would be friends! And if you find yourself walking naked across the Arctic Circle at minus 90 degrees don't worry...some archeologist will find your carcass in the future. Ha!
Hey...I fell thru the ice not once but twice trying to retrieve a lure at 11,000 feet. I'm about 8.5 lives into this existence. I'm in overtime honestly.

LIMBAUGH: They, they just want this guy not to do well 'cause he's a white quarterback ... They were hoping to write that Grossman was an embarrassment and that Lovie Smith needs to seriously bring in somebody to compete with him next training camp. ... But the guy's been targeted for destruction.
This indicates some kind of psycho-pathology on his part.
The McNabb nonsense at least had a plausible basis: People/media do want black QBs and blacks in general to succeed (see: all the "first black coach in the SB" coverage). In time, that opinion might have been slighty vindicated - a la Cosell's "monkey," and the Greeks "breeding" comments.
But the inverse argument - that the public/media want white quarterbacks to FAIL? That opinion is very strange indeed.
Something is wrong with his brain - there's a paranoia there of some kind. Form a psychological basis, this is definitely more than just racism - racism is just a subjective belief. These comments, evincing his belief re: society/media attitudes, is more than just racism, and is simply strange.

They absolutely refused to call out McNabb for dogging it in the Super Bowl.

stopped listnening to him after that. Thing is, there are so many other conservative talk show hosts that are better, and talk about real stuff, and are deeper than Limbaugh and Hannity's "Republican good, Democrat bad" crap. And when he says something that is mildly critical of Bush, you can tell its killing him. Real **** that might be critical of Bush that everyone else is talking about, Rush won't give the time of day. He is getting irrellevant, but hey, its his show, he can say whatever he wants, so long as it doesn't piss off the FCC.

Maybe he'll do for the Senate what he's done for liberal talk radio.

I think that's what Rush's point about McNabb was - that the MEDIA was wanting a black QB to do well and had overrated McNabb without giving enough credit to the defense. And to be accurate BOTH Steve Young and Michael Irvin AGREED with Rush that day. I don't. That's just the media anytime a team does well, they give all the credit to the QB. See: Brady, Tom. (don't get me wrong, he's a great QB, but NE's defense is still one of the league's best and deserve at least 1/2 the credit for them winning).
Only people with an agenda won't recognize this for a joke (funny or not).

As a young broadcaster in the 1970s, Limbaugh once told a black caller: "Take that bone out of your nose and call me back." A decade ago, after becoming nationally syndicated, he mused on the air: "Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?"
In 1992, on his now-defunct TV show, Limbaugh expressed his ire when Spike Lee urged that black schoolchildren get off from school to see his film Malcolm X: "Spike, if you're going to do that, let's complete the education experience. You should tell them that they should loot the theater, and then blow it up on their way out."
In a similar vein, here is Limbaugh's mocking take on the NAACP, a group with a ninety-year commitment to nonviolence: "The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies."
When Carol Moseley-Braun (D-IL) was in the U.S. Senate, the first black woman ever elected to that body, Limbaugh would play the "Movin' On Up" theme song from TV's "Jeffersons" when he mentioned her. Limbaugh sometimes still uses mock dialect -- substituting "ax" for "ask"-- when discussing black leaders.
Such quotes and antics -- many compiled by Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR) for our 1995 book -- offer a whiff of Limbaugh's racial sensibility. So does his claim that racism in America "is fueled primarily by the rantings and ravings" of people like Jesse Jackson. Or his ugly reference two years ago to the father of Madonna's first child, a Latino, as "a gang-member type guy" -- an individual with no gang background.
In 1994, Limbaugh mocked St. Louis for building a rail line to East St. Louis "where nobody goes." East St. Louis is home to roughly 40,000 residents -- 98 percent of whom are African-Americans. One of its 40,000 "nobodies" is star NFL linebacker Bryan Cox.
Once, in response to a caller arguing that black people need to be heard, Limbaugh responded: "They are 12 percent of the population. Who the hell cares?"
