Rudy Giuliani Officially a Presidential Candidate

Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor whose popularity soared after his response to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, moved closer to a full-fledged campaign for the Republican presidential nomination on Monday.

In a sign that he's serious about running for the White House, the two-term mayor was filing a so-called "statement of candidacy" with the Federal Election Commission. In the process, he was eliminating the phrase "testing the waters" from earlier paperwork establishing his exploratory committee, said an official close to Giuliani's campaign.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting any disclosure by Giuliani.

Unlike chief GOP rivals Sen. John McCain and Mitt Romney, Giuliani has been somewhat ambiguous about whether or not he would ultimately pursue the Republican nomination.

He took the initial step in November of creating a committee to explore a candidacy but added the caveat that he was simply "testing the waters" — a provision that allows truly uncertain candidates to move forward without any commitment to seek a top spot on the ticket or the need to identify donors. At the time, Giuliani also did not file an official statement declaring that he was a presidential candidate.

The steps Monday put Giuliani on the same level, legally, as McCain and Romney, the other two top-tier GOP candidates who have formed regular exploratory committees and filed statements of candidacy.

Giuliani's cautious and noncommittal attitude has caused some critics to publicly question whether he would abandon his bid even before formally entering the race, as he did in 2000 when he was considering a Senate campaign against Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Fighting back in recent weeks, Giuliani has started to sound and act like a strong contender, traveling to early primary states of New Hampshire and South Carolina, and arguing that his vision for the future and performance in the past would make him a formidable GOP nominee.

Still, he has stopped short of committing to a run, insisting that he has to decide whether he can make a "unique contribution" to help strengthen the country — his barometer for whether to run.

"There's a real good chance," Giuliani said Saturday, another coy response to what has been a constant question on the campaign trail.

He showed leadership during 9/11, but the feeling I got was that he was pretty much ineffective as New York mayor prior to that time...

we'll see. My old man said he had some damn good things to say on Hannity and Colmes, so I might have to watch the repeat at midnight.

I just can't see anyone with the past or views of Julie's getting the GOP nomination...true, he'd be a good moderate choice for the undecided voters, but (much like Pataki) he'll never make it past the base with the track records he has.

Look for him to exit sometime near the midway point of the primaries.

My old man said he had some damn good things to say on Hannity and Colmes, so I might have to watch the repeat at midnight. So your old man is voting democrat (Giuliani) this time or is he running as a right winger? I can see Republicans coming out in droves to vote for a guy who once married his cousin and champions Gay rights.

If its between Rudy, McCain, Hilary, or Obama, thats a pretty bad field, but if you were to put a gun to my head and tell me to pick one, I would go with Rudy.

It isn't the gay thing that worries me, its him making New York an assylum city for illegals that is troubling. I'll give him the time of day, but I don't know if he would get my vote or not.

And what Spider said, I didn't know that either.

All I know is, my vote this coming election will go to someone I believe in, not the lesser of 2 evils.

I liked Rudy for the most part , thought it was ****ty the way he did his wife , but that was between him and his wife , I really didnt hold that against him , but when he went on GMA and blame the troops , that did it ....... I have no use for him from that point on .............

I cant really see myself voting for Rudi BUT I really liked what he had to say last night in his interview. They pushed him on some major sticky issues and he gave answers. Alot of early canidates would have spun in circles to avoid answering questions on gay marriage/abortion/immigration etc. I give him some credit for being pretty stand up.

That being said so far Im not impressed with the field of canidates at all. Billary not in a million years :nono:

I guess Im just a redneck since I would be less concerned about a bear or mountain lion on my front deck then I would about a democrate in office........I kid I kid Ha!

What exactly was that about. Did he really just blame the troops or did he blame the specific ones that were abusing human beings for laughs???

I mean, i know it's a hypothetical.

But really this isn't about some stupid game - where *your* side wins. This is about America (cue Hank Hill, lol). If you are going to vote for party, and not for this Nation. You are a traitor IMO.

So if someone is going to hold a gun to my head, and make me vote for someone that's going to ruin this country - then sign my name with a bullet and bury me free.

Yep, I use to play that game, as recently as the '05 elections...not anymore. Now I'll vote for someone because I'm behind em, not because I hate their opponent worse.

One politician from New York said about people's opinion of him there,
"He was Richard Nixon on 9/10 and Winston Churchill on 9/12."

Guiliani lost me when I heard a couple soundbites on the radio today. He came out and said that he hated, despised, couldn't stand the killing of an innocent baby, but was pro choice, and defends a womans right to choose. OK, to me that is talking out of both sides of his mouth, yet in another soundbite he acknowledged that if the situation ever came, he would pay for his daughter to have an abortion.

Now for a minute forget the abortion thing, don't care where people stand on it, what I FU&KING HATE is people that do the Bill n Hillary and talk out of both sides of their mouth to appeal to both the right and the left, so they don't have to take a stance and upset some people. If he is for abortion, just come out and say he's for abortion. Don't go out and appeal to the religious right by saying that you hate and despise it, you lost the right when you said you were pro-choice. Just be a man, stand up for your convictions and quit being a fckin used car salesman.

I seem to recall a good many on both sides of the aisle putting it on the troops. With respect to the situation I believe with all my heart that these were bored soldiers ill equipted emotionally to delicately deal with human rights issues inherent in what they did. They were likely told to "soften" up POW's prior to interigation but I still doubt anypne over the rank of SSG had anything to do with what endede up happening. All that said I know what they did was wrong but as a former corrections NCO the real problem with what they did is still available on the internet via a simple google image search

To get back to the heart of this thread I think Rudy is a damn fine candidate for the oval office. I'd love McCain in there but his party likely won't support someone as moderate as John and so we the people would be again screwed out of a potentialy good leader because of politics

Pataki will find this out as well. Like I said earlier, expect an early to mid primary exit by both.

So if your so conivnced that the GOP won't nominate a moderate(and I hope your right) what conservative out there would be nominated? I don't see one out there.

Working in a few industrial places - i've seen the sherrif show up several times to deliver papers to guys while they are at work. Totally gutless - i agree.
