I love how the picture they use in the article is that of Shawn Merriman. They should call this the Shawn Merriman Cheater Rule.

Players who fail the NFL's substance abuse policy next season likely will be banned from playing in the 2008 Pro Bowl.

Sources tell ESPN's Chris Mortensen that commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL Players Association executive director Gene Upshaw have agreed to ban any player who tests positive for performance-enhancing drugs from playing in the Pro Bowl that same season. The policy would take effect beginning with the 2007 regular season.

Upshaw met Monday in Miami with player reps, who supported the ban, union and league sources told Mortensen. One more discussion is planned at the winter scouting combine in late February, with a formal announcement no later than March, Mortensen reported.

A ban also would have financial implications for some players, because some have Pro Bowl bonuses and base-pay escalators tied to the Pro Bowl that would be negatively affected.

The news comes in the week leading up to San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman's appearance for the AFC in Saturday's Pro Bowl in Honolulu. Merriman was named to the AFC roster despite serving a four-game midseason suspension for steroids use.

Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor, the NFL's reigning defensive player of the year, said in December that players who fail drug tests shouldn't be allowed to reap any postseason awards.

"You really shouldn't be able to fail a test like that and play in this league, to begin with," Taylor said then. "To make the Pro Bowl and all the other awards, I think you're walking a fine line of sending the wrong message.

"A performance-enhancing drug is, obviously, what it is," Taylor said. "You enhance your performance by doing that. You fail that test, I think it's not right. It's against the rules and ultimately I think it's sending the wrong message to the youth in America and the people who look at this game not only as entertainment but also to learn lessons from it."

Merriman has denied he's a steroid cheat and blamed his positive test on a tainted supplement.

Merriman, the 2005 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and a Pro Bowl starter, knows some people will remain skeptical.

"You have to understand that the kind of person I've been and the kind of person I am, there should be no question in nobody's mind -- even though there will be -- about my ability on the football field," Merriman said. "This is God-given talent and that's what I've been showing since I've gotten on a football field. I think over time everybody will see that and know that."

It will henceforth be known as "The Shawne Merriman Rule."

If athey really had a sack, they would make it retroactive for this pro bowl. :wiggle: Merriman would whine like the b!atch he is.

Merriman is worthless in the Probowl anyway since LB's can not rush the QB and they must play a 4-3 front. He was an embarassment last year as he had no idea what to do on the twenty or so plays the defense called all game long. They really should ban him from the game this week, but instead they prefer to hassle local Churches in INDY ;D You know, because they want to send the right message!

Yeah, I'm sure this will clear up the problem.

No doubt. Since about all the Pro Bowl is anymore is the sixth or seventh guy in a dubious chain knowing everyone ahead of him will probably come up with an excuse not to play. Now apparently all it will take is a well timed pee test...

I don't think it was so much an embarassment because Merriman didn't play LB in college so he's still learning the position. Right now he's a pure pass rusher who is still learning the ins and outs of being a complete linebacker. But leading the NFL in sacks will get you a spot in the Pro Bowl. Next year, he'll just have to keep clean though. ;)

It's not his fault that he plays for a 3-4 defense and not a 4-3, which the majority of the league plays and that the NFL completely neuters the rules of the game for the Pro Bowl. All 3-4 defensive ends in the NFL will never get a Pro-Bowl berth because of the responsiblites they must keep in a 3-4 and not rack up the sexy stats that a 4-3 DE will.

Looks like what Taylor and Champ said was actually heard by front office. I think it's great. Roid heads shouldn't be honored.

That's not true. Good theory but facts get in the way.
Seymore from the Pats plays DE. He is in the Probowl every year. When Denver ran a 3-4 in the 70's Barney Chavous and Lyle Alzado made Pro Bowl teams. Rulon Jones was getting plenty of sacks when Denver ran a 3-4.

Ends have ample opportunities because of the blitzing LB causes confusion thus freeing them up.

Didn't Seymour go as a DT in the past? The Patriots play a mix of 4-3 and 3-4 anwyay so he's a bit of an exception to the rule.

I actually take back what I said earlier on and I'm cool with this "Merriman rule". Stay clean (whether it be by accident or not ;) ) and you can get all your accolades and awards.

You made good points Atlas, but Barney Chavous was never selected to the Pro Bowl.

Good read...I had to quit reading in the middle to delete posts and ban an OrangeMane user who was representing OM by posting hardcore porn all over the place...and has been banned multiple times. But when I got done I felt it was good decision by the NFL.

I was surprised they let Merriman participate this year but I suppose if there isn't a rule in place? They don't llike hanging themselves out that much. I think I read a few weeks ago the NFLPA agreed to more instances of random testing for next season. Sounds like another good step.
