I played handball in college, and my college team won the national championship. Not saying alot because the sport is so far marginalized here, but it was fun!
Did you know that Dirk Nowitzki was raised a handball player, and that his father was a professional?

I played handball in high school (or the German equivalent to it), I wasn't too bad at it but just not tall enough.
I didn't know that about Dirk, I'm not really familiar with his upbringing. I must admit, I'm just a bandwagon handball fan ;D

Yeah, Dirk's father Jeorg wanted him to become a professional handballer. Evidently, basketball is largely considered a women's sport in Germany. I guess that Dirk's success has changed that a little though.
Dirk's sister is a basketball player too.

I never had the impression that basketball is or was viewn here as a women's sport. During the time I grew up there were a lot basketball fans around here. With Michael Jordan and then the Dream Team it just got really popular over here. In school you play handball, basketball and soccer equally (and to a lesser extent hockey and volleyball). The ultimate women's sport is volleyball ;D

Yeah, it was after the dream team came through that basketball became more acceptable for men, I believe. At least that's what Dirk has said. He said that the dream team got him interested in basketball.
It must have been cool later in his adolescence when he played some of those guys while they were in Europe, and Dirk laid a wicked dunk on Charles Barkley's head as a 17 year old. Charles always brings it up to him, and said that from that time on, he tried to recruit Dirk to play at Auburn.

I didnt play it until college. I had never heard of it. I had been out of soccer for a couple of years, and when I was choosing PE hours my advisor asked if I wanted to play handball, so I gave it a shot. It's basically raquetball with your hands.

Ahh, the sport you see people play in NYC?
I was thinking handball was more of a team game. I remember seeing some game in the Olympics a couple of years ago that I thought was called handball. Kind of a soccer played with the hands, indoors.....

yup, this is the one.. it's a pretty physical sport actually (not comparable to football or rugby of course, but more than soccer and basketball imo)

With about the biggest assist ever to the refs, how on earth was that French goal overruled?
Messy messy sport, but I can't help but watch when Denmark makes a run at sth anyways, sure was exciting, double overtime in both semis, overtime in our quarterfinal as well.
