List the jersey numbers for the (appx) 1971 secondary:
Charlie Greer
Bernard Jackson
Grady Cavness
Bill Thompson
TIME'S UP!
This is sad, guys ... somebody shouldda got these (is anyone still playing?)
I said "appx 1971," and actually, Bernard Jackson came along in 72, a year after Cavness left. Nonetheless:
Charlie Greer - #20
Bernard Jackson - #29
Grady Cavness - #40
Bill Thompson - #36

Rod Smith's career touchdown receptions are the most in history in the NFL for an undrafted player. What Kansas City Chief is second with 49?
Rod Smith has caught more passes in his career than any other undrafted player. What New York Jet is second on the list with 712?
1) Gotta be Stephone Paige from Fresno State
2) Gotta be Wayne Chrebet from Hofstra

Paul Martha wore number 47, and had a game with 3 picks. Might have been against rookie Terry Bradshaw.
There is a great NFL Films clip of then Falcons coach, Norm Van Brocklin, insulting Martha.
Actually now that I think about it, Paul Martha's 3 pick game might have come against the Falcons, who may have been coached by the vile drunk, Van Brocklin.

I know he busted it out on his shoes during his record setting day in KC. I seem to remember Trent Green gave him the name but I can't remember the context. Makes more sense if it was Grbac, but that doesn't seem right.

Ron Egloff and Larry Canada attended what college together?
BroncoBuff
02-04-2007, 04:56 AM
Egloff went to Wisconsin - but that's too easy. I'l bet they played to gether at a small college, and Egloff transferred. Canada was a small college guy I think ... I'll guess Wayne State.
Stephone Paige is right I'm sure, but Wayne Chrebet is wrong - I peeked - and he had just 580 catches.
What about Boyd Dowler?
Beat me to Tuskegee ...
How did Ken Woodard leave the Broncos' team?
Billy Clyde Puckett

Both Canada and Egloff played at Wisconsin, BB.
Hard one here:

BroncoBuff
02-04-2007, 12:12 PM
Stanford ... Stanford ... hmmmm ... Bill Laskey? #45 ... no, he was a safety.
I give.
And Egloff #83/Canada #35 was a DECEPTIVE QUESTION! Too simple, I wouldda thought there was a trick there. I was thinking Larry Canada (nobody's Rhodes Scholar) was probably a small school guy.
What Broncos FB kicked off for the team in the mid-70s?
How many guys from Oklahoma played for the Broncos BEFORE we drafted Steve Sewell?
B-Love
02-04-2007, 12:26 PM
Lonnie Perrin was our kickoff man, and he actually wore #35 before the Mailman did.
In '78 when Canada joined the team, Lonnie settled for #33. Once Jim Jensen appeared to be fully healthy from his injuries in '77 and '78, Lonnie was let go, and finished his career with a cup of tea in Chicago.
BroncoBuff
02-04-2007, 12:32 PM
NICE! That was what raised Lonnie in my mind - that #35 jersey.
What number did RB Oliver Ross wear? What was Oliver Ross known for a s a Bronco?
B-Love
02-04-2007, 01:15 PM
Ross wore #30, but don't know the other part. Ross and Fran Lynch got considerable time when Otis went down with hammy problems in 1975.
Towards the latter part of the 75 season Orange Crush started to sparkle. And we had John Hufnagel and/or Steve Ramsey handing off to Fran Lynch, Oliver Ross and Jon Keyworth. Not exactly the 94 49ers eh?
Anyway, they went to Oakland and Miami late in the year and Orange Crush played incredible games, even though Denver lost both games. The initial roots of great Denver Defense came into light late in the 75 season. Most say '77, some go back to '76, but it was the end of the '75 season actually.
And another thing I have never been able to conform, is our Oliver Ross related to the former Steelers O Lineman??
Is that his son?? Someone??

Bit of a trick question here: the answer is Willie Brown cornerback Raiders, who scored a td in Oakland's Super Bowl win over Minnesota in the 70's. Brown was traded by the Broncos to the Raiders in the mid-60's.
Boyd Dowler did play for the Colorado Buffaloes in college but never played for the Broncos to my knowledge. The pro football encyclopedia has him with Green Bay since 1959:

I'll never forget how I learned that about Paige. I went to Hawaii Christmas 94 for the Buffs bowl game vs. Fresno, Dilfer's last college game. I got my hands on the Fresno media notes, and they were so insecure! They were like, "the NFL has to draft Dilfer in the first round, they HAVE to." They went on and on for like three pages about how Henry Ellard and Stephone Paige from Fresno had become these legendary NFL 'greats,' but hadn't even been drafted, or in Ellard's case not nearly high enough.
This, of course, proved there actually WAS a conspiracy, that Fresno State WAS disrespected!! But now ... now Trent Dilfer is SO great that the NFL has no choice but to draft him in the first round ... they have to! Or we'll SUE!" Ha!
I remember laughing, because it reminded me of the early 70s small-town Denver mentality, where so many people thought it was a "conspiracy to disrespect Denver" if Howard Cosell omitted the Broncos highlights from hs MNF halftime highlight show. :gripe: ~Popps~
Anyway, I think the Fresno media guys were probably right all along! They were disrespected! Because I lived through a decade of that bastage Paige against the Broncos, and before that day I never had any idea he went to Fresno! ROFL!

Tommy Lyons, Larry Evans and John Hufnagel all made the Bronco roster after being drafted in what round?
titan
02-06-2007, 07:07 PM
Arrowhead was (and is) a football only stadium (with Royals Stadium right next to it) - that wasn't in the plans for Denver. Denver's stadium (which was turned down) was a multipurpose, combo baseball/football stadium. I was pretty young but I remember seeing a model of it before the vote, and I was depressed when the stadium was voted down (most people thought that meant the Broncos would move). An organization called the DOERS raised enough money to expand Bears stadium which allowed the Broncos to stay.

Griese was more like 20 TD's and 5 INT's if I remember.

He wanted to stay away from the south side of the field to avoid the stuff being thrown at them from the South Stands (snowballs? or beer bottles)
I remember in the old days (before the bottle ban) all sorts of stuff used to come out of the south stands. The half loaves of bread for Lou Saban's return was the highlight. Also somebody threw a snowball at Lenny Dawson who was walking towards the locker room on crutches.

It's a little outdated, but here you go.
Famed NFL Player Pens Novel, Bush Justice, A Tale Of Rape, Murder And Revenge
Market Wire, May, 2000
Mike Current played hard and tough for 13 years as a National Football League star. He butted heads for the likes of the Denver Broncos, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Miami Dolphins. Instead of a helmet and body blocks, he now wields a pen, a mighty weapon in the war of words.
The former football great has taken his talents to quite a different playing field, the literary marketplace. Writing books seems a natural progression for Current following his glory days of brain and brawn. After his life in the NFL, Mr. Current purchased Angler Rapids Wilderness Lodge on the shores of the Churchill River, 350 miles north of Regina, the provincial capital. His experiences in this pristine spot inspired his novel, Bush Justice.
Set on remote Keg Lake in the wilds of Saskatchewan, the novel unfolds in the aboriginal community of Cree Indians. Thoroughly familiar with the harsh bush country and its people, the author leads the reader through a tangled tale of rape and murder, political intrigue and retribution. According to noted book reviewer Marvin Jensen, "Bush Justice is full of characters that you will love and hate. Characters that you cry for justice to be enacted upon, both the good and the evil, for even the good have injustices committed against them. Bush Justice is a novel that you will be glad you read. Mike does a wonderful job of keeping your interest until the end."
Current's time spent in the region heightens the reality of the story and lends authenticity to the travails of the native characters. His knowledge of local lore and language pulls the reader into the vortex of this riveting tale. Said Current, "It was the futility of their daily lives that motivated me to write this story."
As proprietor of the Wilderness Lodge, he ran the Canadian fly-in operation for wealthy sportsmen. Sensitive to their mistreatment of the local Cree Indian population, he was moved to tell the story of a corrupt legal system, political pandering, murder and mayhem. Seeking validation for the people he came to know and respect, the author kicks off with a pointed plot. Bush Justice explodes into an intricate, horrifying and believable blockbuster.
Having launched his second career with the unforgettable Bush Justice, Current wrote his next spellbinding book scheduled for release next month. Rememberin' Life in the Trenches tells his own story as a boy growing up in Ohio and progresses to his 13-year career in the National Football League. The book will make you laugh and cry and beat your fists at the antics of such greats as Woody Hayes, Don Shula and Vince Lombardi. Few writers are more qualified than Mike Current to take you inside the real people and the real game of football.

Best catch in Bronco history? Maybe, maybe not. Haffner's catch was great but he was wide open. I remember a Riley Odoms catch where he caught the ball one handed and then was creamed by the Raiders safety (Jack Tatum?) and still held on to the ball.

Punt from your own 1 yard line and put the opponent back to their 1 yard line. That's incredible!!
Babe Parilli entered the game late to try to tie the game after Dave Costa mangled Namath. Parilli's 2 pt pass was no good and Denver escaped 21-19 for a huge win.
Parilli was then Craig Morton's QB coach in Denver for several years, under Red Miller.

Vance Johnson made a catch against the Raiders at home in either 1990 or 1991 that was unreal. When you watch it at regular speed, you think there is no way he could've stayed in bounds.
But when NBC slowed down the replay you could see the diving extension and toe tap near the sideline that was just incredible.

What player did the Broncos draft with the third round pick they received from Washington in 2005 in the deal that sent Denver's first round pick to the Redskins?

In 2000 Mike Anderson finished first among rookie rushers with 1,487 yards. Jamal Lewis finished second with 1,364 yards. Who finished 3rd?

Yeah. I remember hearing from some commentator that jumpy used to use shoe polish for his grey hairs. Hilarious!

Rod Smith! Be ready Rod Smith!
40 yard (?) TD to win it at the gun ... I think it was Rod's first catch in the NFL.

A little history study and language practice. I teach English to get by. Its a tough place to live, but i like it. I get my Broncos news from the mane and can catch just about all the games over the net (sometimes at sportsbars). It sucks though because when I say to my friends over here, "****! I cant believe we're trying to trade Al Wilson!" They just look at me like I'm crazy.

Who was the first one through the tunnel?

No, I just figured that when you said Elway, that meant the offense was introduced, and the offense-intros aways start with WR ....
.... then TE, T, G, C, G, T, WR, ...

Romo was the first one out of the tunnel.
GB won the toss and the first play was a handoff to Levens.
Dang these players look young.
On our side...it was a handoff to TD.
