View Full Version : Niners joint venture with a broke Al Davis?

I thought it was a joke when I first read this. Somehow I can't imagine Raider fans in the stands one week and niner fans the next.

Monday, January 29, 2007

Here's the latest twist to the Bay Area's topsy-turvy stadium politics: Word is the San Francisco 49ers have informally approached the Oakland Raiders about building a new home -- together.

The stadium, which would be shared by the two rivals, very well could be in Santa Clara, where the Niners are pursuing new digs next to Great America.

Niners executive Jed York, the son of team owners John and Denise York, said that while a joint stadium idea has merit, there has been no contact with the Raiders on the subject.

"I think it's a good idea, but we haven't gone down that road yet,'' he said. "First we need to work on Santa Clara, and make sure we can actually get a stadium down there.''

That's not what we are hearing from inside the Raiders organization, and from others in the know who have contacts with the Niners.

Those sources tell us John and Jed York approached the Raiders management in a casual setting in the latter half of the football season about the possibility of teaming up.

Raiders chief executive Amy Trask said only, "We are enthusiastically focused on the 2007 football season, and don't believe this is an appropriate time to discuss stadium opportunities. ...We are playing in a nice stadium, which our teams and fans enjoy.''

Wild as it may sound, the economics for a Forty-Raider stadium just could make sense for both teams.

For starters, the 49ers -- after nearly 10 years of trying -- still haven't found a stadium plan that pencils out financially given that football is only played about 10 times a year.

Hooking up with the Raiders for a stadium would instantly double the usage and could make financial sense.

Plus, the teams could get a big boost from the National Football League, which this past season agreed to kick in $300 million to the New York Giants and Jets to build a joint stadium at New Jersey's Meadowlands.

The thinking goes that if the Niners and Raiders could get a similar handout from the NFL -- and that's still a big if -- it would go a long way to helping them get over the stadium money hump.

As for the Raiders, their current 16-year-lease at the remodeled Oakland Coliseum is set to expire in four years -- or about the time the Niners hope to have a new stadium built.

The Raiders, despite upgraded football digs, are still unhappy about playing in Oakland -- but currently have few real prospects for moving out of the area again.

What's more, owner Al Davis -- who only recently was forced to spend a bundle to buy out the unhappy heirs of a silent partner -- doesn't have the cash to build a stadium on his own, sources say. And given his past battles with the NFL, he doesn't appear to have many friends in the league looking to do him any big favors.

The Jets and Giants share the Meadowlands... This seems like a reasonable thing.

Maybe so but there was no Al Davis in the Jets/Giants equation.

Hey! I remember Great America! Went there when I was about 15.

Have I ever mentioned I hate the San Fran Bay Area?

I hope both teams do jointly share a stadium, and they have a game together there. Then, an earthquake can open the field and swallow them both.

Have the Niners really become that much of a loser organization? Guess so.

The difference between the Giants and the Jets sharing a stadium and this proposed arrangement is that the Giants and the Jets are the only teams in that area. This just seems...awkward...

Why is it the league has a non-stop desire to have as many teams as possible in Kalifornia but the teams there receive well below average support and tax payers and governments think so little of them that they can't pull off new stadiums?

If small markets like Green Bay can get substantial upgrades and Indy can get a top notch new stadium deal done then what the hell is the deal with Kalifornia?

The deal is if any of us ran our finances the way Cali has, we'd be eating dog food because thats all we'd be able to afford.

The self delusion about that craphole is astounding. Hopefully this dimwit will be with Oakland for a long long time. Everything I've read tells me the stadium is a POS. Of course, there is Mt. Davis where the Stith reside, but the rest of the place is a slum.

I'm not a niners fan, but I can't believe they actually gave an open hand to the dark side...It's like trying to pet a three legged feral Mastif. It will attack you at the first chance.

The NY/NY agreement works because both franchises want it to.

"Oh, darnit, Scooter. I left the cheese knife at home, and we have this georgeous imported smoked gouda."

"Oh no, Pumkin Breath. I've been positively lustful for that gouda at halftime since last Monday."

"Oh, SCOOOTY, look under your seat, there's a spoon and some old hypodermic needles....."

So we can watch the crime rate go up and down each week as the teams switch usage of the stadium. Both teams need an upgrade. NoCal sucks to high heaven.

Huh the more I think about it the niners would have to be out of their flippin minds to do business with Al Davis. Come on Taco think about it. Al is lawsuit happy and has ripped plenty of people off.

Business 101 in college "Don't do business with wackos or people who like to sue other people". Al fits both of those profiles. He can't run his team let alone cut a deal like this with another franchise and make it work. It's totally absurd.

Living in New York for awhile I can tell you Jets fans HATE having their home games in Giant Stadium. And Giant fans are very arrogant about letting the Jets play in their stadium.

But if it were a joint venture 50/50, I could see it working.

Yeah, you're right about that. I don't know how eager I would be if I were the Niners to get into bed with Al Davis. But the thing is, they need to modernize their stadium just like any team does in order to have the kind of escalating cap money to offer their players that every "modernized" team does. Their situation is certainly an unattractive predicament.

Man we're lucky to have an owner like Bowlen.

I'm pretty sure that they aren't packaging Al Davis' passed gas for commercial sale... You're going to have to go straight to the source... ;D

Actually, our kids would be eating dog food. We'd be eating Filet Mignon, and figuring out new ways to raise taxes on our kids.
