Who knows why, but I found myself scanning this prick's column today. Here's a snippet from his mailbag:
Now, to give our lasagna a little piquancy, we offer our array of exotic cheeses, namely this sharp little item from John of Washington, D.C.: "Is Grossman the worst Super Bowl quarterback ever?" I mean Trent Dilfer looks like Joe Montana compared to him."
Dr Zippy: Interesting question. Of course one can't pass that judgment until the game has been played, and Rex is capable of putting up serious numbers, with enough time. But the worst ever? No, my choice would be Craig Morton with the 1977 Broncos. Teammates of his often questioned his dedication that week. Plus other things I can't go into.
What a load of bull****. Johnny Unitas on the best day of his life wouldn't have stood a chance the way the Broncos blocked for Morton in that game.
Of course, Zimmer**** doesn't even critique Craig's performance. He just alludes to some totally unfounded rumors he made up in his empty bald head, 30 years after the fact.
Classless sonofab**** every day of his life.

Craig Morton got out of a hospital bed to play that game. Someone else had to tie his shoes for him. If flaccidface is making oblique reference to someone that injured shouldn't be playing, there may be a point.
But in general, it's a crappy statement from someone who supposedly is a journalist. Other things I can't go into? Gosh.... isn't he the noble one.

Only QB to start for two franchises in the SB. What a load of crap. Plus to diss his willingness to take a hit. Unfreaking real. One might possibly just off this take to the idiot being too lazy to find out who the broncos were who partied rather than getting ready to play, but the reality is that Morton's the only one on the offense with the name recognition for the asshole to mention the 77 team. LOL What's a shame is people are dumb enough to pay him lots of money, or buy the mags that publish his ****.

Dr. Z got a book published? Wow! That was even before they had on demand publishing too I guess.
His hatred for Shanahan and DEN is so blatant that I wonder if he lost money betting on that game? Jeez, i bet he might have even brokered the deal and got screwed on it to boot!

Go PFW. They continue to give you access to adjustments right up into the season usually online with the purchase of the mag.

basing it on stats, morton made a case for being the worst ever, that day.

The question itself was ludicrous, given that Grossman has less than a week before he actually plays in the game...

Zimmerman was right that Morton owed some back taxes, but he never accused him of throwing the game. That came later from other fans, etc.
Before anyone takes this info too far and Hogan comes in with his 100 time/year "I always hated Craig Morton cause Charlie Johnson was the man" :-* , .........
1. Remember who Paul Zimmerman's favorite NFL team was/is?
2. Remember where Craig Morton came from when he arrived in Denver in 1977??
3. Paul Zimmerman wrote unflattering article after article about Craig, especially in late '75 and '76, while covering the Giants.
4. Morton tried a true fresh change, and adopted a pseudo born again persona in Denver, and it resulted in great benefits for the Broncos. Zimmerman was with Alzado all Super Bowl week writing Alzado's book, and Craig would not give Dr Z. the time of day.
Good for Craig. Don't believe any of this from Zippy.

Even more ludicrous because Zippy probably made it up so he could indulge in a little character assassination.

Craig had a few holes in his career for sure.
But there are just lies in what Zippy writes. NO ONE EVER accused Morton of his commitment level while in Denver, EVER.
While in New York, Morton did grow his hair long, unbuttoned his mid 70's shirts down to just above his navel, rented a high class studio apartment in midtown Manhattan, and partied like it was 1999!! And it did rub people the wrong way.

Even wierder because it was around that time that Morton "found" religion. But, yeah, Z would hate Morton for having gotten run out of NY and then getting Den to the game, esp cause the Giants sucked.
Was it the center who was hung over at game tiem? I forget. However, I recall the fans and the parties. We didn't really care about winning till the game was over, and then we all said, "hey, wtf?"

What Zimmerman does not have the balls to write is that Morton's 2 1/2 years in New York, ranks very high on the all time unmanageable NFL situations of all time. When you read this below, try to think of a more difficult situation for a new QB.
1974 - Morton is traded to a 1-7 Giants team midseason, that is already awful from a talent standpoint. They play their home games in Connecticut, at the Yale Bowl.
1975 - The Giants finish 5-9 and are very competitive in several losses. Still completely devoid of any major Offensive talent, with a post injury Ron Johnson as the feature runner. Ron Johnson used to be a stud, but by '75 Johnson was what TD was in 2000 and 2001. And Ray Rhodes was Morton's only deep threat, and he was a DB convert.
In '75 the Giants played their games in Shea Stadium, out of an emergency situation due to the Meadowlands not being ready. Due to ticketing snafus, the Giants played their Shea games in front of numerous Jets fans.
1976 - Due to the Meadowlands being sooooo behind construction schedule, the NFL schedule makers hosed the Giants by giving them 4 straight road games to start the season. Then they opened the Meadowlands in week 5 against Dallas, went to Minnesota in week 6, and then came home for the Steel Curtain in week 7, in the middle of the Steelers record setting Points Against streak in '76.
With Ron Johnson officially sent out to pasture, the Giants replaced him with a fat and out of shape Larry Csonka, fresh from the Hawaii Hawaiins. Csonka had been out of the NFL for two full seasons.
In 2 1/2 years in New York, Morton played his home games in three different stadiums, in 3 different states, with three different fan bases, wearing three different uniform designs.
Not to mention, three different sets of blatantly mediocre Skill position players to boot.
Again, I would challenge anyone to come up with a more unworkable situation for a new arriving QB, in the history of the game. Dr Z. should have been big enough to point some of those things out. But he lets personal vendettas get in the way.

Typical, he's an ass clown like 90% of SI's staff.
I got a strong hunch that a lot of people bashing Grossman now are going to feel pretty stupid late Sunday night. He's got talent, he's just been hot and cold all year with his decision making. He's done pretty good in two playoff games now though....

I was never a fan of Morton's, hyperventilated in much the same way I did when Maddox was drafted when they brought him to Denver. My mother was an avid Dallas fan and I had watched Morton in Dallas and cringed at the thought of him doing the same in Denver. I think too much credit has been given to his injuries in relation to his play in that SB, BUT, I've seen worse QB play in the SB......Rich Gannon? Fran Tarkenton against Pitt? Yes Morton is up there but not the worst.

Thanks for the kind words.
Morton's ego had been greatly bruised during the end of his 9 1/2 year tenure in Dallas. What people who only remember the broken down old man in Denver don't realize is, Craig was considered a can't miss 'Cover Boy' when drafted by Dallas in '65. Most Cowboys players thought he should've started over Don Meredith right away, but Tom Landry had a 5 year rule for grooming QB's.
Morton was squeezed out by Dandy Don on the front side of his career, and squeezed out by Roger Staubach later in his career. Morton was only the untested starter for 3 of his 9 1/2 years in Dallas.
So he made an unfortunate decision, desperately wanting to start again, and accepted a starting assignment, in the New York fishbowl, with crappy Offensive players.
Craig should not be villified when you consider the Giants were lousy for 5 years before Morton got there and 4 years after. Tarkenton is a HOF Quarterback, and he was run out of town. Tarkenton, Norm Snead and Randy Johnson were all booed unmercifully before Morton's arrival. And Joe Pisarcik, Jerry Golsteyn, Phil Simms and Scott Brunner were all booed unmercifully in the first few seasons after Morton left.
It was the nature of that untalented beast.

Watch the tape of Super Bowl XII sometime, and you'll see how little time Morton had in the pocket (and he wasn't all that mobile at that point in his career). No coincidence that Dallas DL Randy White was a co-MVP. Maurer was eaten alive at OT, and Tom Glassic, who was probably Denver's best overall OL, lost nearly 40 pounds due to illness in the weeks leading up to the game. He was supposedly down to 225 by gameday. White tossed him around like a rag doll.
The situation was hopeless and no QB in the NFL could have withstood that kind of pressure.
That's the story of SB XII, but "Cowboys Take Advantage of Sick Guy" is a headline that would not have sounded too sexy.

Denver went with Weese specifically because Morton couldnt escape the pressure.

Are you aware of what those injuries were? I wasn't a big fan of the guy either but when I saw the pictures of the bruises resulting from that hip pointer? Man, I really don't know why he took the field that day.

How do you rate the worst QB in a Super Bowl ever without quantifying the criteria. Is it worst one game S.B. performance? Is it worst season leading up to S.B. appearance? Is it worst total career of S.B. starter?
Worst one game performance: Rich Gannon
Worst year leading up: ???
Worst career: Vince Feragamo
