I wish the NFL would go back to the one week off. I hate this weekend with no football. Maybe put a little more hype behind the senior bowl and put it at an NFL stadium and sell it more, or have a 3rd place game and let the losers from the conference championship battle it out for the 29th and 30th draft positions. I just need something to watch other than golf or tennis at work.

In some years, the Super Bowl has been played on a normal one-week layoff and the games have usually been crisper and better-played. In most, though, there is a two-week layoff and the reason (though unspoken) for it dates back to 1963.

When John F. Kennedy was assassinated, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle decided that the Sunday games be played that weekend. Later, he called it "the biggest mistake of my life". The nation, and even the players, were still in mourning and interest in that week's games was very low.

In retrospect, he should have postponed the week and re-played it at the end of the regular season, pushing back the championship game a week.

Today, the Super Bowl is a major international event with literally millions of logistical aspects to consider. My belief is that the extra week of build-up exists as a bubble week in case a major national disaster forces another postponement.

There have been two major events since then that disrupted the league's playing schedule. The first was the 1987 player's strike and the solution was to use the bubble week to push back the playoffs but hold the Super Bowl on it's pre-planned date.

The other was 9-11 and the league orchestrated a massive switch of accomodations with the Automobile Dealers Association to delay the Super Bowl a week and push up the ADA convention. Of course, the league had the benefit of almost four months' notice to rearrange schedules but I'd bet at least some people with Super Bowl tickets had to sell them because of the schedule change.

I agree that the Super Bowl ought to be played the Sunday following the conference championship games but the reason they don't is because they don't want some late-year national tragedy to prevent the Super Bowl from being played at it's normally scheduled date.

I didn't mind it. It allowed me to turn off the TV yesterday and do something productive...
