Over at Draft Countdown, I bumped into the story behind this picture. This reporter asked Kiffin why it would be different for him in "the black hole of coaching." That's when Greasy stepped in. Ha!
Here's that reporters story:
Killion: Davis refuses to see the depth of problems
By Ann Killion
Mercury News
Marcio Jose Sanchez / Associated Press
Lane Kiffin addresses the media after being introduced as the Oakland Raiders new head coach in Alameda on Tuesday.

Kiffin promises offensive revival around corner
At first, I wondered why that fresh-faced young intern had boldly wandered onstage with Raiders owner Al Davis and chief executive Amy Trask.
Oops. That was the new coach of the Oakland Raiders, Lane Kiffin.
He was easy to overlook because he was sitting next to someone impossible to ignore. The young man and the old man sat side by side and spoke of leading the Raiders back to greatness.
The young man awkwardly sounded like he was reading from an unfamiliar script. The old man was reciting the same words he has growled for four decades.
The young man, in response to questions about the Raiders' recent horrors, woodenly channeled Mark McGwire and said he wasn't there to talk about the past. That's fair; at 31 and with a scant résumé, there isn't much to discuss.
The old man, on the other hand, talked primarily about the past. About when he was at USC in 1959. About the anniversary of the 1976 Super Bowl team. About the Raider greats in the room -- also old now.
The problem is both guys have it wrong. The past is crucial. But not the past Davis likes to talk about. The important past is the last four years, when the Raiders have been the worst team in the league.
Kiffin needs to know what has to be fixed. Davis needs to acknowledge how deep the problems run. He doesn't want to do that. That became clear when I asked Kiffin how it would be different for him in the black hole of coaching. Davis answered instead.
``I take that as an affront,'' Davis said, taking issue with my generalization of eight coaching changes in about a decade. (Actually, it has been 12 seasons. Davis later, amusingly, agreed to play nice and call it 11.) But Davis didn't want to acknowledge that no matter how you slice it -- eight coaches in 12 years, seven coaches in 10 years, 15 wins in four seasons -- the Raiders have been a disaster for a very long time.
Is Kiffin the right guy to lead the Raiders to -- forget greatness -- how about .500? We don't know. We're glad he's a new look. We figure he knows about talented, highly paid athletes from his time at USC. We know the last time the Raiders went young, it worked out.
But first impressions are important, and Kiffin didn't make much of one. He had none of Jon Gruden's wink-wink demeanor. With Gruden -- who used self-deprecating humor to balance the Raiders' bizarre culture -- you always knew he understood what was required and was playing along.
Kiffin's only flash of humor came after I asked him if he had turned to Gruden -- his father's boss with the Buccaneers -- for advice.
``The last person I talked to was Jon Gruden,'' Kiffin said. ``I called and asked if he was interested in being the offensive coordinator.''
That drew Kiffin's biggest -- well, actually his only -- laugh of the day. He added that he didn't actually talk with Gruden about the job, which seems kind of strange for a detail guy who knows the former Raiders coach.
Kiffin didn't get a lot of laughs, but he said a lot of funny things. That the Raiders players will play happy and will play hard. That the game will be easy because practice will be so hard. That he was extremely excited ``that I was Al Davis' first choice to be the Raiders coach.''
That last point was part of the spin of the day, a gyration that has transformed Steve Sarkisian's rejection of the Raiders into Kiffin being the first choice all along. That second-choice perception is just one hurdle Kiffin has to overcome.
So is his defensive players' loyalty to coordinator Rob Ryan, who didn't get a sniff for the job. So is the joy emanating from Trojan Nation over Kiffin's departure, since USC fans blame Kiffin for failing to win the past two national championships.
The biggest hurdle is that Raiders past he so doesn't want to talk about.
But the day wasn't really about Kiffin. As always when he appears in public, it was about Davis.
Davis was, as ever, fascinating, combative, revealing. He peppered his post-news conference remarks with the F-word, insinuated that he wanted to draft Matt Leinart last year, and called last season ``a year of infamy.''
Every time Davis talks it is high theater. Every time he talks I realize what an original he is, and how boring the NFL will be without him. It's always more entertaining when the Raiders are relevant.
So, good luck, Kiffin. It would be great to have the Raiders back in the realm of the living. But it's hard to imagine how a 31-year-old ingenue can gain credibility with his players. Not when the legendary Davis is at the controls.
At the end of the formal news conference the lights mysteriously went out. The room became a black -- dare I say? -- hole. When the lights came on, Kiffin had vanished -- apparently winging his way to the Senior Bowl. But Davis was still at the podium, willing to hold court for several more minutes, to scold reporters and provide a window into his thinking.
The new coach wasn't missed. Not at all.

I think he feels the noose on his career tightening after his lapse in judgment in taking over that lost cause.
Hopefully for that teams sake, he convinces Davis to forget about Vick and just use the number 1 pick on Brady Quinn or Troy Smith.

I am a CU alumni who has no hate (except on game day) for CSU. I hope Kiffin gets sick of the Oakland zoo in a couple of years and comes back to take over for Sonny. Would be nice to have three excellent college teams in the state.
Amy Trask will inherit that team when Al departs.
A whole new era of hate will ensue.

Didn´t Kiffin openly campaign for the CU job a year ago?

I will say this:
As much as we bash Al Davis, one thing I love about the man is that he's always clad in Raiders clothing. You never see owners wearing that, always suits. I'm not necessarily knocking on them for doing it because after all, it is a business and a suit is appropriate too, but I do find it cool that Davis always has Raider stuff on.

The Bears have no cheerleaders because Virginia McCaskey didn't want them. Now THAT'S evil. Could Trask actually take away the Raiderettes? I shudder to think...zowie!

If they were really smart they should trade down and pick up a couple of draft positions, since they need so many. But unfortunately, or fortunately for us, Al Davis' pride is too big and he knows he will be on center stage having the #1 pick on draft day and will want all attention on his team and himself. So he will probably draft and over pay another Robert Gallery performance level player.
