*UPDATED* 1/23/07 - Daily practice reports from the South Squad practices.

Player Pos School Height Weight Arm Hand
Kevin Kolb QB Houston 6027 220 31 3/8 9 7/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: At times he looked like the best quarterback on the field but he tended to aim his passes a little too much at times. Kolb moved around the pocket well and was able to read the defense correctly most of the time. Kolb also didn't look to have that strong of an arm.

Jordan Palmer QB UTEP 6053 229 33 9 7/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: He was inaccurate most of the practice session. Palmer looked to be off on his mechanics which caused his passes to be off. He also looked to struggle reading the defense which also caused some deflected passes and one that was picked off.

Chris Leak QB Florida 5117 203 31 1/4 9 5/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Out of the three signal callers, Leak was the most efficient during the Tuesday session. For the most part, Leak was accurate and he did a good job of reading the defense. His timing was off a few times with the receivers but that could be because the receivers may not have run the correct route. Leak also did a nice job on his deep throws.

Kenny Irons RB Auburn 5101 188 31 3/4 10 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes:

Lorenzo Booker RB Florida State 5103 188 30 3/4 9

Tuesday Practice Notes: Shows a lot of wiggle in his running and an excellent burst. Lacks any strength carrying the ball and easily brought down at the point of attack by the first defender.

Kenneth Darby RB Alabama 5101 211 29 1/2 9

Tuesday Practice Notes: Solid day yet needs more consistency. Ran the ball well and did the same catching in. Made several nice receptions yet at the same time dropped some very easy/catchable throws. Struggled pass blocking.

Le'Ron McClain RB Alabama 6000 265 32 9

Tuesday Practice Notes: Fierce blocker very strong at the point. In one-on-one drills rag-dolled his teammate Juwan Simpson. Also caught the ball relatively well.

Martrez Milner TE Georgia 6036 256 34 9

Tuesday Practice Notes: Once again showed his terrific athleticism catching just about everything thrown his way. Was both quick and fast. Displayed terrific route running skills, getting separation from opponents after sharply getting into breaks.

Joe Newton TE Oregon State 6065 257 34 1/2 10 5/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: While he catches the ball well Newton looks sluggish and slow. He is slow releasing off the line, slow into routes and just has a general malaise to his game. Also looked poor blocking.

Courtney Taylor WR Auburn 6015 200 31 3/4 9 5/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: He will occasionally round off his routes but shows the ability to get open and become available for his quarterback. He lets too many passes into his body but has excellent hands, body control and awareness. He seems more comfortable with underneath routes.

Dwayne Bowe WR LSU 6022 222 33 1/4 9 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes: Capable of making some incredible catches, Bowe also dropped a few easy ones. He has the ability to run ankle-breaking routes but often loses focus and runs them sloppily. He does fight for the ball and has great field awareness. Overall his play has stood out.

Chansi Stuckey WR Clemson 5101 193 31 9 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Runs undisciplined routes. He has quick feet and looks most comfortable working along the sidelines. He fails to create enough separation for his quarterback and drops too many balls even when he does.

Johnnie Lee Higgins WR UTEP 5112 183 31 3/8 9 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes: He’s capable of making some exciting catches but too often loses focus on the easy ones. He has great body control and field awareness yet fails to consistently create separation. His quickness is admirable but he needs to show more straight-line speed.

Dallas Baker WR Florida 6030 203 35 3/4 9 7/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Does an excellent job selling his routes and getting defenders to bite on fakes. His hands, body control and field awareness are all excellent. He still body-catches too many balls, but not many of them hit the ground.

Chris Davis WR Florida State 5093 244 31 1/8 10 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes: An exceptional athlete. He has quick feet and in sharp coming in and out of breaks. He has terrific acceleration and his suddenness draws attention downfield. However, he runs his routes inconsistently and needs to prove he can haul challenging receptions.

Joe Staley OL Central Michigan 6055 296 34 1/4 10 1/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Excelled in zone blocking today. Really showed the ability to work his way down the line, hook defenders, and drive them laterally down the field; and overall testament to his athletic ability. Struggled with his handplay today. At times can look like an albatross winding up for takeoff. Can be corrected, but it will hurt him at times during this particular week.

Justin Blalock OL Texas 6033 331 33 1/2 10 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: This afternoon Blalock did not sport the extra wrap on his knee as he did yesterday. One thing is certain; his overall lateral quickness is still affected as evidenced in his subpar pass protection. Saw reps at both guard and tackle again. Did not lead with his head as much today, but at times he would stop his feet after initial contact.

Tony Ugoh OL Arkansas 6054 301 36 9 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Had the block of the day when pancaking Chase Pittman in one on one pass rush drills. This particular play showed Ugoh’s strength to his post leg as he just slammed the defensive end to the ground. Does need to bring his feet with him in run blocking though.

Arron Sears OL Tennessee 6031 317 34 10 1/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Everything stops and started with footwork this afternoon. The coaching staff consistently corrected Sears on proper power steps. Had trouble taking the proper angles and getting to the second level. One scout pointed out Sears is very strong and does have a great punch.

Ben Gubbs OL Auburn 6030 315 33 10

Tuesday Practice Notes: A trend is starting to appear with Grubbs’ footwork and the coaching staff trying to correct it. Plays with his base way too wide at times. Also lead with his head at a few points in the running game today.

Tim Duckworth OL Auburn 6032 304 32 1/2 9 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Hand play was an issue for Duckworth today. Never shot his hands to get a solid fit on the defender. At times he would lead with his head. Also looked a little lost when asked to block in space. Struggling with technique is his main focus at this point and has been consistently coached up.

Leroy Harris OL NC State 6024 298 33 10 3/8

Tuesday Practice Notes:

Ryan Kalil OL USC 6027 291 32 9 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Easily the most consistent and talented lineman on his particular squad. Was impressed to see the 291 lbs. center drive the 323 lbs. Tank Tyler a couple yards downfield with great technique. Kalil showed very good quickness especially with zone blocking and was able to get to the second level to make blocks with ease. The one time he was blown off the ball, he regrouped himself and regained perfect position to wall off the defender.

Mansfield Wrotto OL Georgia Tech 6030 316 33 10 1/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Still erratic, especially with the timing in his punch, needs to be quicker. Did show a strong post leg when presented with an underneath rush. Excelled today in run blocking as he was able to drive a few defensive tackles off the ball on downblocks.

Dustin Fry OL Clemson 6023 326 33 1/8 9 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Struggles with locking out the arms. Does a nice job getting his hands inside a defenders body, but never gets the proper extension to control said defender. Loses a lot of his power because of it. As such he was driven back off the ball by larger defensive tackles. In pass protection, Fry needs to keep a solid base and work on his lateral movement.

Quentin Moses DL Georgia 6047 249 33 1/2 9 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes: A lot of flash with not much substance. Tends to overwork his pass rush moves, thus accomplishing nothing. Did show some very nice quickness off the ball and laterally. Held his own against bigger offensive linemen in the running game.

Chase Pittman DL LSU 6044 272 32 3/4 10 7/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Just not a great athlete and compounds the situation, especially in his pass rush, but taking too wide of a route to the quarterback. Likes to use his hands though and does so well.

Tim Crowder DL Texas 6037 271 33 9 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes: Very quick off the edge, even registering a practice “sack”. While he has shown quite an aptitude for rushing the passer, he tends to struggle with getting linemen’s hands off of him once they are established.

Ray McDonald DL Florida 6033 282 33 1/4 10

Tuesday Practice Notes: Strong for his size and comes off the ball hard. Today McDonald let defenders into his body, could not get off of blocks, and lost his footing a few times. Finally saw a couple reps as a defensive tackle.

Antonio Johnson DL Mississippi State 6027 305 33 3/4 9 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes Fantastic job today with his pass rush. Broke off two picture perfect spin moves to frustrate the opposing blocker. Received reps as both a three and one technique. The one area of concern today was Johnson’s ability to feel a downblock and was driven down on a couple of occasions.

DeMarcus Tyler DL NC State 6021 323 33 9 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: The nickname of Tank certainly applies, it is always straight ahead while trying to overpower everything in front of him. The one nice thing was his ability to get extension, but was never able to get off blocks after doing so.

Ryan McBean DL Oklahoma State 6045 277 32 1/2 10 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Once a lineman got his paws on McBean, he was done. At times during the practice his head did not seem into it as he jumped offsides on numerous occasions. Even got a couple reps as a defensive end, only in pass rushing situations though.

Kareem Brown DL Miami (Fla.) 6040 303 33 1/4 10 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes: Works very hard, but his overall play does not always equal results. At times he will give up his chest to opposing linemen. Saw action as both a one and three technique as the practice progressed.

Buster Davis LB Florida State 5095 192 30 1/4 8 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Did a terrific job leading the defense today and getting his teammates in proper position. Plays with a lot of quickness firing up the gaps to penetrate the backfield or immediately getting to the sidelines. Does get caught up in the trash and can be easily blocked from the action.

Patrick Willis LB Mississippi 6010 240 32 3/4 9 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Once again Willis was very stout in run defense and excels in the box. His change of direction is slow and his hips are stiff. He has not played like the first rounder everyone has anointed him to be.

Tony Taylor LB Georgia 6005 237 32 9

Monday Practice Notes: Looked very stiff all day.
Tuesday Practice Notes: Taylor really struggles to get outside the box and make plays. He has limited mobility and skill in coverage.

Earl Everett LB Florida 6021 235 32 1/4 9 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Was chastised by coaches early in the day for playing with poor technique. When he finally employed the proper fundamentals his playing speed and quickness reduced by one-third. Really did not make many plays on the field today.

Juwan Simpson LB Alabama 6023 223 33 10 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Simpson is a solid athlete who covers a lot of area on the field and plays with terrific quickness. That said something is lost in the translation of reading the action and getting to the play as he was usually a half-step late arriving to the spot, especially in coverage.

Rufus Alexander LB Oklahoma 6007 227 33 9 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Very athletic and covers a tremendous amount of area on the field. Showed terrific speed to the flanks in coverage and a lot of quickness up the field in run support. That said he is easily caught up in the wash or blocked from the action. All and all you've got to say Alexander has helped himself today.

A.J. Davis DB NC State 5102 180 29 3/4 9 3/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Tends too leave too generous a cushion and needs to close on passes much faster. He shows good recognition skills and does a good job of anticipating the play. His technique is solid but as a prospect he seems unspectacular.

David Irons DB Auburn 5107 198 31 8 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: He has the potential to be a shutdown corner. He has good speed and consistently maintains tight coverage. He makes aggressive breaks to the ball and will challenge for interceptions, but his aggressiveness also makes him penalty prone.

Fred Bennett DB South Carolina 6007 196 33 9 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Does a poor job of redirecting players at the line. He seems most comfortable playing center field but his reaction time is sub-par. His balls skills are lacking and he needs to do a better job of distinguishing himself.

Aaron Ross DB Texas 6004 192 31 1/4 9

Tuesday Practice Notes: Is very comfortable in man coverage. He is powerful and near-dominant when jamming receivers at the line. He has excellent speed and consistently shadows receivers downfield. He is aggressive in going after the ball and has the potential to be a shutdown cornerback.

Kevin Payne DB Louisiana-Monroe 6001 215 30 8 7/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: He’s a steady player who needs to do more to distinguish himself. He has solid hands and takes good angles to the ball but appears slow in and out of his cuts and looks uncomfortable given too much space. He appears penalty prone, too.

Brandon Meriweather DB Miami (Fla.) 5105 192 30 8 5/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: He shows terrific quickness. His technique is solid and he is always around the ball. He looks crisp coming in and out of breaks but will sometimes be caught guessing. He has the confident attitude you would expect from a Miami player.

Brett Goode DB Arkansas 6012 232 31 1/2 9 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes:

Michael Griffin DB Texas 5114 195 31 7/8 10 1/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Does a good job of disguising coverage. He will attack the ball at its highest point, but needs to make more assertive breaks and increase his playing speed if he wants more opportunities to do so. His coverage is solid but he needs to author more big plays.

Jonathan Wade DB Tennessee 5097 192 30 1/4 9 1/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Shows playmaking potential, although the consistency isn’t quite there yet. He is sharp coming in and out of his break and is aggressive in going after the ball. He is quick to diagnose plays and has stellar anticipation. His quickness is admirable.

Daniel Sepulveda P Baylor 6021 228 31 1/4 10
Weigh-In Notes: Cut and in good shape.
Tuesday Practice Notes:

Nick Folk K Arizona 6011 220 31 1/8 9
Weigh-In Notes: Solid build.

Senior Bowl North Team Practice Reports

Victor Abiamiri By TFY Draft Preview

Posted Jan 23, 2007

*UPDATED* 1/23/07 - Daily practice reports from the North Squad practices.

Player Pos School Height Weight Waist Hand

Tyler Palko QB Pittsburgh 6007 215 32 1/4 9 7/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: He showed a little improvement with his accuracy but his lack of overall arm strength is clearly evident. His footwork was better on the second day and he seemed more comfortable in the offense. Palko still doesn't have an NFL arm and that's been clear from his first throw in the first practice on Monday.

Troy Smith QB Ohio State 5112 214 32 9 1/2
Tuesday Practice Notes: He still was the best quarterback on the field for the second straight day. He showed an overall command of the offense and he was very accurate. Smith clearly was the most polished of the three signal callers on the North squad. The only negatives were he was off a little on some deep throws but his intermediate throws were mostly right on the money.

Drew Stanton QB Michigan State 6027 226 30 3/4 9 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: His throws were erratic at times and wobbled past 15-20 yards. He did show improvement with his footwork and he did a better job of going through his progressions. Overall, Stanton needs to show more improvement the rest of the week to help his draft stock.

Tony Hunt RB Penn State 6016 239 31 1/4 9 3/4
Tuesday Practice Notes: Hunt had a solid day today looking good in many aspects of the game, especially running between the tackles. Has great vision inside the line, finds the hole and powers his way through the congestion. Does not have a high-end gear, which hurts him trying to get around the corner and once he gets into the second level, and runs upright when tired. Decent hands out of the backfield, and got better at blocking in the team drills after a poor performance in one-on-one blitzing with the linebackers.

Kolby Smith RB Louisville 5112 214 32 9 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes: Seemed stiff all day and almost too muscular for a running back. Did not seem smooth in his running, but still runs downhill and with force. Runs well up the middle, but there is a tendency to bounce his runs outside even to the point of overrunning his hole. Loves to use his stiffarm for runs to the outside, and strong enough to get away with it. Good pad level at the point of contact, can get some major yards afterwards, but is a two down back.

Garrett Wolfe RB Northern Illinois 5073 182 29 1/8 9 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes: Did not practice and found out after the practice he is injured with Thomas Clayton coming for him tomorrow.

Brian Leonard FB Rutgers 6010 224 30 1/4 9 3/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: A hybrid running back and fullback, that questionmark could hurt him in the draft unless a team feels he can fit their philosophy. Needs to add weight, especially in his upperbody, to be a good blocking fullback. Best with the ball in his hands, can actually move very well for his size. Great awareness without the ball, can pass block well, has natural hands catching the ball, and runs well behind his pads up the middle. Changes direction better than expected. Best system would be as a running fullback or power singleback set.

Scott Chandler TE Iowa 6065 268 34 9 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Caught the ball very well today even making some difficult receptions with defenders draped on him. Gave effort blocking but his lack of strength is apparent as is his overall lack of speed and quickness.

Clark Harris TE Rutgers 6053 257 32 9 7/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Will be leaving after suffering with turf toe. His replacement will be Ben Patrick of Delaware.

Aundrae Allison WR East Carolina 6001 197 32 8 7/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: He has quick feet, great acceleration and stellar field awareness. He runs crisp routes but lacks deep speed.

David Clowney WR Virginia Tech 6003 184 31 10 1/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: He has quick feet, runs precise routes and consistently creates separation. He has great acceleration but needs to work on his hands. He tends to catch the ball with his body and needs to do a better job protecting it after the catch.

Jason Hill WR Washington State 6004 204 32 9 5/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Has some deep speed and can catch the ball over his shoulder, although he does best on underneath routes. He tends to round off his routes and catch the ball with his body.

Rhema McKnight WR Notre Dame 6007 207 32 1/4 10

Tuesday Practice Notes: Will make some incredible catches but will drop some easy ones, too. He is quick off the line, competes for every ball thrown his way and catches the ball well over his shoulder.

Brandon Myles WR West Virginia 6007 183 33 1/2 8 1/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Has excellent hands and will snag anything within his wheelhouse. He gets his head around quickly but needs to be quicker coming out of his breaks.

Paul Williams WR Fresno State 6010 200 35 10 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: A long-strider with deceptive speed, he does a good job tracking deep passes. He runs crisp routes but fails to consistently create separation.

Levi Brown OL Penn State 6053 323 34 1/2 9 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes: Better feet than expected. Slid well in pass protection and was able to move well enough to ward off all the Norths pass rushers. Lacked any type of punch in pass blocking, and his hand play overall was awful. Definitely flashed the talent which would make some scouts think highly of him.

Ryan Harris OL Notre Dame 6046 299 33 3/4 9 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes: Technically sound in regards to his initial steps and hand play, but from there everything tends to break down. His stance is a pet peeve simply because he angles himself even before the snap and thus tends to turn his shoulders a little early. If he hits his punch in pass protection then he was fine today, but if he did not; then showed no recovery ability. Saw action at both tackle spots.

Marshal Yanda OL Iowa 6037 304 32 1/4 9 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Well coached in his fundamentals but plays stiff and as a result tends to get too high. Does a nice job especially in pass protecting keeping his back flat, shooting the hands, and getting a nice fit. Playing right tackle for the first unit, and playing some guard with the second unit.

Josh Beekman OL Boston College 6016 315 31 1/2 9 5/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Saw reps at both center and left guard. Beekman showed tendencies to be overaggressive all day. In regards to his run blocking this is a positive as he finishes his blocks with a nasty demeanor. Pass protection though, his lack of patience forced him to be beat clean a couple times. The area he suffered most this morning was not being able to hold blocks after initial contact. Also his second level movement and angles was a bit suspect today.

Doug Datish OL Ohio State 6037 302 32 1/2 9 1/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Started out the day ay guard and eventually got some reps at center. Datish is technically sound in regards to his hand play and footwork but struggles with staying low. A bit stiff in the hips. This was especially apparent when asked to pull and he was much too high trying to find defenders at the second level.

James Marten OL Boston College 6073 303 34 9 5/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Played predominantly a tackle today, seeing most of his reps at right and a few at left. Marten again showed a nice nasty streak as evidenced by getting in a fight with defensive tackle David Patterson after finishing a block. Marten looked athletically limited and struggled at times when his technique broke down: hands too wide, lunging, timing. But when he was able to get a nice fit on a defender, he got nice extension and able to ride them out.

Dan Mozes OL West Virginia 6023 300 31 1/2 10

Tuesday Practice Notes: Mozes was unfortunately the first lineman whom got thrown around like a rag doll on a couple of occasions. He was not strong at the point today and could not hold his ground very well. One of his problems as seen is his inability to shoot his hands which does not help his situation. Not only played his traditional center spot, but some action at guard this morning.

Manny Ramirez OL Texas Tech 6027 335 32 10 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes: Very slow off the snap. Makes up for his lack of explosion by being strong as a bull. But like most brute strong athletically limited guard prospects, Ramirez has a tendency to try and overpower all his opponents and usually ends up in wrestling matches. Especially when you consider he does not get any extension in his follow through.

Samson Satele OL Hawaii 6022 294 31 3/4 10

Tuesday Practice Notes: The question as to whether this Hawaii prospect can run block or not coming out of that system has yet to be answered. Overall run blocking today was subpar. In pass protection, Satele overset on multiple occasions giving up his inside to interior pass rushers. Also saw action as both a center and guard.

Nick Leeson LS Virginia Tech 6014 258 31 1/4 9 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes:

Victor Abiamiri DL Notre Dame 6044 271 33 1/2 10 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Athletic prospect who shows the ability to change directions well. Dips his shoulder off the edge in his pass rush. Does struggle to get off of blocks when engaged and needs to be quicker on his counter moves in his pass rush. Some teams have inquired about him possibly being a 34 outside linebacker.

Adam Carriker DL Nebraska 6057 292 33 9 1/2

Tuesday Practice Notes: Arguably the most consistent player among both sides of the lines today. Strong at the point of attack, reads plays very well, uses his long arms well, and even showed some ability to get to the quarterback. Even registered one practice tackle for loss. Does need to fight through trash a little better.

Jay Moore DL Nebraska 6045 276 32 9 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes Another defensive end that showed multiple moves in his pass rush, some athleticism off the edge; but struggled to get off of blocks. One area where he excelled is being very disciplined much like his Nebraska counterpart.

Anthony Spencer DL Purdue 6024 266 32 3/4 10

Tuesday Practice Notes: Solid day. Showed some speed off the edge and was able to set up his moves in pass rushing situations. Against both the run and pass showed a competency to get off of blocks.

LaMarr Woodley DL Michigan 6013 269 34 1/4 10

Tuesday Practice Notes: Did not practice today due to a tweaked hamstring which occurred very early in warmup drills.

Brandon Mebane DL California 6010 304 32 1/2 10

Tuesday Practice Notes: Excelled in passing situations, but struggled against the run. Has nice hands and quickness off the snap and gave some of the interior offensive linemen fits in passing drills. Needed to hold his ground better against the run overall. Looked very much like a one gap defensive tackle today.

Amobi Okoye
DL Louisville 6020 287 34 10 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Fires off the ball low and hard and is very quick off of the snap. Really gave some of the interior blocks fits at times this morning. But if he does not beat his man initially he can be overwhelmed at the point of attack especially playing as a 1 technique.

David Patterson DL Ohio State 6017 274 32 10 1/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Again, showed the best motor on the field. Works against pressure and just does not stop. Though at times he can be erratic and that same persistence can get him out of position. Also struggled in pass rushing drills with his overall lack of moves.

Quinn Pitcock DL Ohio State 6023 301 32 9 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Corrected by the staff on multiple occasions for not being able to split double teams. Simply does not dip the shoulder to break through them. Does use his hands well in pass rushing situation though. Very strong at the point of attack and was able to reestablish the line of scrimmage on multiple occasions.

David Harris LB Michigan 6022 239 32 1/2 9 3/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Looked really strong at the point. Also showed good footwork in pass-cover drills though he rarely made any plays on the ball in scrimmage. Showed a lot of range and covered a good amount of area in scrimmage which is a big positive.

H.B. Blades LB Pittsburgh 5106 237 31 5/8 10 1/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Stout and built strong. Looked fluid in drills and was around the ball a lot in scrimmage. Not really quick or explosive for a "smaller" linebacker.

Stewart Bradley LB Nebraska 6035 256 32 3/4 9 7/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Solid day. Big, strong athlete who played that way. Took on and shed blocks. Did a much better job that expected in pass coverage. Lacks the great change of direction but his smarts and ability to diagnose the action helped him make up for it.

Prescott Burgess LB Michigan 6031 246 33 1/4 10

Tuesday Practice Notes: Solid in run defense and did an adequate job in coverage. Looks strong and plays that way.

Kevin McLee LB West Virginia 5116 239 31 1/4 8 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Struggled right from the get go. Did not look quick at all during drills and looked even tighter in coverage during scrimmage. Has difficulty trying to shed blocks.

Paul Posluszney LB Penn State 6012 237 32 1/4 9 5/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Strong, stout and intelligent but did not show much ability outside the box. Forced the action up the field and made a lot of plays against the run but really struggled in reverse. Several times he was beaten by Scott Chandler in scrimmage and could not cover the tight end off the line.

Leon Hall DB Michigan 5110 193 32 9 1/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Has great hands and becomes a receiver once the ball is in the air. He lacks elite speed and although he can maintain tight coverage, he does so only sporadically.

Daymeion Hughes DB California 5101 192 31 3/8 8 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: Has a tendency to give too big a cushion and can be had on underneath routes. His quickness and closing speed are both elite.

Tanard Jackson DB Syracuse 6000 192 31 8 5/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Gets a good jump on the ball and is aggressive in going after it. He shows good hands but needs to improve his coverage against the deep ball.

Marcus McCauley DB Fresno State 6005 200 31 1/2 10 1/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: He does a good job jamming receivers at the line and is great against quick hitters. However, he lacks acceleration and cannot maintain tight coverage for very long.

Josh Wilson DB Maryland 5091 188 30 9 1/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Has soft hands and the ability to stay with receivers deep. He is not often fooled by double-moves but is a sure bet for a pass interference call when it happens.

Josh Gattis DB Wake Forest 6010 206 32 1/2 9 3/4

Tuesday Practice Notes: He looks uncomfortable in man coverage and struggles to get a good jam on receivers at the line of scrimmage. Hes a leader in the secondary and appears most comfortable patrolling center field.

Aaron Rouse DB Virginia Tech 6035 218 33 3/8 9 5/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Needs to diagnose plays quicker; he will bite on double-moves. Has the speed to cover receivers downfield but needs to do a better job of looking back for the football.

Eric Weddle DB Utah 5112 205 30 9 5/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Has a tough time staying with receivers downfield and appears uncomfortable in man coverage. He is much better near the line of scrimmage and is rendered ineffective in space.

Mason Crosby K Colorado 6010 214 29 1/2 9 3/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Struggled with his kick-offs and never reached the end zone. Hit a 50-yarder at the end of practice with a lot of room to spare.

Adam Podlesh P Maryland 5106 203 29 1/2 8 5/8

Senior Bowl Buzz: Tuesday Afternoon

Houston QB Kevin Kolb By TFY Draft Preview

Posted Jan 23, 2007

The crowd is still growing as more NFL coaches and general managers attended Tuesday afternoon's practice for the South. There is plenty of coaching and player news buzzing around Mobile and we have the latest.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Eric Green is on hand hoping to land a job with the Miami Dolphins. It looks as though the team could interview Green in the coming days.

There is a lot of talk about Nick Saban down here. Most of it negative at the Senior Bowl amongst the NFL community but on the outside Alabama fans are happy with the Tide's new hire.

One rather humorous story is about Saban and the cell phone given to him by the Miami Dolphins.

Seems Saban was given a cell phone with an unlimited account while he was head coach of the Dolphins. After bolting Miami for the Alabama job the organization continued to get huge cell phone bills from Saban's account. When the calls were traced it seems the former Dolphin coach was using the phone for his new job to recruit high-school prospects for Alabama!

The source told us the phone was immediately shut off.

Several college coaches have been roaming the sidelines looking for jobs.

Yesterday Larry Coker attended the South practice, dressed in full Miami Hurricane garb looking for a new employer. Today Buffalo head coach Turner Gill was roaming the sidelines of both practices looking to possible suitors.

John Dorsey of the Green Bay Packers has told people one of the players whose impressed him the most down here has been Iowa tight end Scott Chandler.

The Carolina Panthers are seemingly zeroing in on taking a quarterback this April. After meeting with Brady Quinn on Sunday the team today spent a lot of time with Kevin Kolb.

As first reported by scout.com, the Dallas Cowboys interestingly denied the Cleveland Browns permission to talk to assistant head coach/offensive line/running game Tony Sparano on Tuesday about their offensive line job. Sources say that Dallas owner Jerry Jones respects Sparano very much and would like to keep him around for the next head coach. Sparano called the plays in 2006 for Dallas but whether Sparano is a serious candidate for the vacant head coaching position with Dallas is yet to be determined. It's believed, however, that Sparano will get an interview for the job.

While the Arizona Cardinals fired offensive line coach Steve Loney on Tuesday, a league source told scout.com that the Cardinals actually denied at least one team permission to talk to Loney shortly after their season was over.

There has been much speculation on the future of New England Patriots running back Corey Dillon of late due to his age and contract status. A league source with knowledge of his contract situation told scout.com Tuesday that Dillon's remaining years on his contract are very salary cap friendly so his contract shouldn't be a determining factor in him coming back for another season. The source points out that his contract is very heavy with incentives over the final three years of the deal (2007-2009). As scout.com first reported at last year's Senior Bowl, Dillon's contract was restructured with more up front money in 2005-2006. The source also adds that Dillon still wants to play another year and it's up to the team whether they want him to come back for another season or let Dillon go with RB Laurence Maroney being the main ball carrier. Dillon is coming off of a season in which he played in all 16 games for the first time since the 2002 season.

After their season was over, it was assumed that Cleveland Browns offensive line coach Jeff Davidson would return for the same role for 2007. But as scout.com first reported last week, Davidson could be a candidate for jobs with the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers for either the offensive line or offensive coordinator positions. As things have progressed, Davidson was in contract negotiations with the Panthers after his interview with the team went well on Monday. The job Davidson wound up getting consideration with Carolina was for offensive coordinator. It's believed that Davidson shares a similar offensive philosophy of head coach John Fox which is a power running game with a vertical passing game.

Here are a couple of boys the Broncos should take a serious look at:

Joe Staley OL Central Michigan 6055 296 34 1/4 10 1/8

Tuesday Practice Notes: Excelled in zone blocking today. Really showed the ability to work his way down the line, hook defenders, and drive them laterally down the field; and overall testament to his athletic ability. Struggled with his handplay today. At times can look like an albatross winding up for takeoff. Can be corrected, but it will hurt him at times during this particular week.

He also was very active in the Hula Bowl game last week. Rare to see a prospect do both bowls.

Senior Bowl Buzz: Tuesday Morning

Ryan Kalil is making friends in Mobile By TFY Draft Preview

Posted Jan 23, 2007

Though there's still a chill in the air the weather cleared in Mobile for the morning's practice as the North took the field. A full compliment of general managers, coaches and scouts were on hand and there was plenty of news swirling in the air.

Sources familiar with the San Diego Chargers feel Michael Turner will be traded to the New York Jets for the team's pick in round one. The Chargers will tender Turner the maximum amount and will trade him for nothing less than a first rounder. Speaking to people familiar with the Chargers around Mobile you get the feeling the deal is done. One sticking point could be the Jets, or any team who desires the acquisition of Turner, coming to terms on a long term contract with the running back.
The Jets were very busy with another team Tuesday morning as it seems the franchise will fill one of their two coaching vacancies with an assistant from Tampa Bay. Mike Tannenbaum and Terry Bradway were huddled before practice with Buccaneer coaches, intensely questioning them. More on this as it comes in.

As usual the Kansas City Chiefs are very active here in Mobile. One position the team is targeting at the Senior Bowl is center as they hope to come away with a developmental prospect in the draft. And a player they really like is Ryan Kalil. They feel the system Kalil played in at USC lends itself to an easy transition in the Chiefs style of offense.

The Seattle Seahawks were actively scouting the backs today and came away impressed with two of the bigger players at that position.

Seattle loved Brian Leonard of Rutgers and the scouts on hand took almost a full page of notes on him. The other player they liked, and one who had a terrific practice, was Tony Hunt of Penn State.

The team also liked Amobi Okoye. So much so that the Seahawk scouts who were watching the running backs looked halfway down the field and were commenting on Okoye's performance in drills.

Detroit had a scouts follow the linebackers but openly expressed an interest in defensive lineman Adam Carriker. The team feels he won't be around for them in the second round and they'd need to do some maneuvering in order to select Carriker.

The Bills scouted the receivers hard this morning but let it be known the real wide out talent resides on the South roster.

Garrett Wolfe will be leaving with an injury and is going to be replaced by Thomas Clayton of Kansas State.

When discussing Penn St. RB Tony Hunt Tuesday, one scout said, "he made some money these two days." Hunt did a good job of running with power and often punished would be tacklers.

Many NFL personnel men around the league seemed to be shocked that the Oakland Raiders hired USC OC Lane Kiffin as their head coach. Some around the league are wondering if the trend of hiring 30-something head coaches will continue in the future.

The comments from some NFL scouts sitting in the stands in regard to Pittsburgh QB Tyler Palko weren't flattering to say the least. Once scout pointed to ex NFL QB Jim Zorn (now a quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks) and said Zorn, at his age, has a stronger arm than Palko.

The general consensus on Rutgers FB Brian Leonard is that he'll have to put on 15-20 pounds if he wants to succeed at the next level.

Indianapolis Colts may be preparing to play with starting CB Nick Harper for the last time when they take on the Chicago Bears in the Super Bowl. Harper, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent come March, is probably on his way out. A team source points out that the team spent two high picks in the 2005 draft (first round for CB Marlin Jackson and second round on CB Kelvin Hayden) and both players need to get on the field more. Harper, who turns 33 at the start of next season, would make a solid nickel back for another team.

Here are a few other players teams were interested in:

New York Jets - Tony Hunt

Browns - Marshall Yanda, Aaron Rouse, Tony Hunt, Josh Wilson, Drew Stanton, Daymeion Hughes, Ryan Harris, Adam Carriker, Dan Mozes, Brian Leonard.

Dolphins - Kolby Smith

Vikings - Brian Leonard

Redskins - Marcus McCauley, Daymeion Hughes

Saints - Troy Smith

Panthers - Anthony Spencer, Marcus McCauley

Patriots - Stewart Bradley, Rhema McKnight

Chargers - LaMarr Woodley, Aundrae Allison, Drew Stanton.

Bengals - Tony Hunt, Victor Abiamiri

Ravens - Mason Crosby, Josh Beekman

Chiefs - Ryan Harris

I still like Carriker in the first .Carriker would make DW a All Pro at linebacker Plus shut down the running game and is a decent pass rusher. In the second I like Staley or Mebane or Merriweather. In the 3a I like Arron Ross or David Irons. Both player could be shut down Corners. With the second 3 maybe Dan Buzuin ,Mike Otto ,Greg Hill or Garry Russell.

On a more serious note i'd like to talk a little bit about what I saw today.

First, Ryan Kalil...I really like this kid, it's too bad we have more pressing needs because from what I saw, he is going to be a damn good center in the NFL. Excelent footwork, good compact size just like we like em.

From most mock sites that i've seen, they have Brandon Mebane going somewhere in the third. After his showing in practice the last two days, he's got to be moving up into the high second round. He looks really impressive and has a lot of power, just seemed to push people off the line with ease. Needs to develop some technique with that power, but overall I think this kid is going to be good.

Overall, the WR's from the north and south didnt impress me much, I saw a lot of droped balls. I'm sure a lot of these guys are still pretty nervous with all the NFL scouts looking at them, but I think there will still be some talent to be had in the later rounds.

The DB's have an unfair disadvantage in these one on one drills so I wasn't expecting to see much from them. Marcus McCauley has some long ass arms and broke up a few passes. I saw Michael Griffin on two plays. On one he played the ball nice, on the other Dwayne Bowe tiped a ball to himself that Griffin should have had, seemed like he quit on the play. Eric Weddle had the deep ball thrown on him every time I saw him, he pressed every time he was up. Each time he was beat by two to three steps. The kid is not a burner, he runs like a 4.5 40, and I hate to see him lined up in one on one. Honestly i'm hoping his stock drops, but i'm sure most scouts know hes not going to play corner in the NFL.

Does this mean we get him in 3 seasons?

Le'Ron McClain RB Alabama 6000 265 32 9

Tuesday Practice Notes: Fierce blocker very strong at the point. In one-on-one drills rag-dolled his teammate Juwan Simpson. Also caught the ball relatively well

The second coming of Howard Griffith?

I hope the Jets dont feed the Chargers a first round pick, the last thing we need is for that team to get more first round talent.

I get the distinct impression that Carriker is moving up beyond the Broncos' reach. :oyvey:

Carriker is pissing me off. He's doing too many good things and like Ro said, he's moving up beyond our reach.

Aaron Ross is pissing me off too. He's destroying guys at the LOS. At one point Mayock said (about .5 seconds after the snap) that WR's play is over. After that jam at the line the QB won't even look his way. Ross' play so far has moved him up into the 2nd round. I wouldn't be suprised to see him move way up in the 2nd and possibly into the 1st. He's doing great for himself and it's pissing me off b/c I wanted him at #70. The good news, Griffin could work his way down to #53 now!

No. He won't work his way into the first round unless there is a trade up from one of the teams in the top-middle of the 2nd that really wants him bad. I guess the Jets are possible, but if the rumors are true that they're trading for Michael Turner they won't have the need for RB or the pick in the first round.
