We had begun to discuss this, but I think it deserves it's own thread. I was terribly undersized to play SS and suffered three concussions one, quite severe...of course...back then, you were told to "shake it off". Well, I knew I couldn't keep at it making 15 tackles a game. We were terrible. One hit I took off a thigh pad with some beast with a beard knocked me out cold for a few seconds. I was 95 pounds with a baby's butt. Late bloomer obviously.

That's why I was so upset letting Jay back in. Just because Jay was able to find and put on his helmet didn't make him fit to go back in.

Mike Golic was talking about how he had to ask a teammate where to line up.

I'm not going to say that the revolution helmets are "pretty" but they look better than they did when they came out. I'm going to be angry if they don't make Cutler wear anything that can protect his brain.

I saw your post on the other thread, and wanted to comment that now they are making helmets that have the holes on top to release air like the revolutions, but they're basically just a modified standard helmets.

On a side note, I wouldn't hold my breath on Jay wearing one. Chances are if he was gonna wear it, he would have one already.

The holes don't have anything to do with the protection. The reason a revolution helmet protects against concussions better than a standard helmet is because the revolution helmet comes down and protects the upper jaw and frontal part of the skull better. They found that many concussions are caused from trauma to the jaw and this added protection on the Revolution reduces those injuries.

The air holes are just that: holes for air.

I stand corrected. I assumed that it was involved in cushioning somehow. Anyway, I put a pillow in the helmet if will protect our potential franchise QB.

A Revolutionary Change
The design of the Revolution helmet is based on the findings of a long-term study of professional football players conducted by Biokinetics & Associates, an independent engineering consulting firm, and several universities. The research revealed that of all the hits to the head that resulted in a concussion, nearly 70 percent were to the side, face, or jaw area.

The new Revolution helmet includes innovative features specifically designed to help reduce the risk of concussion. The Tru-CurveT protective shell extends to the jaw area and has been computer designed around the head's center of gravity to offer superior front-to-back fit and stability. The new Z-pad design provides protection to the side of the head and the jaw - helping to lessen the energy of impact on these areas if a collision occurs. The patented VSR Air-FitTSystem features padding that can inflate to offer a custom fit to every player's head shape.

the holes are for ventilation and reduce the weight of the helmet.

That's what I get for listening to Mock :giggle:

They're still damn ugly though and I'd never wear one.

No doubt the first part of your statement is correct. It's the second part the troubles me. If not many people know that perhaps they should try reading. And if that is just to much trouble - watch a little TV.

Most people don't read up on concussions unless they've personally experienced one or they're doing a biography on Troy Aikman.

TV has advanced as an educational tool with more channels geared for education (i.e. The History Channel, Discover Channel, etc.). "CSI" is also very good. However, mainstream America seems more drawn to "South Park" (great show), "Jackass", "American Idol", and watching contestants open boxes on "Deal Or No Deal".

Correct, which is why boxers get ko'd when hit on the jaw. A considerable factor in severity of a concussion is whether or not a mouth piece is worn. The mouth piece helps absorb a considerable amount of shock that would otherwise be transferred to the brain to cause a concussion. Most QBs in the NFL don't wear mouth pieces and a big reason why they are more prone to a concussion.

Many qbs say the revolution helmets hinder them looking side to side.

If Foster is still on the team then Cutler better wear this helmet. WHo cares how it looks. How will Cutler or any other QB look 40 years from now as he dribbles on the rocking chair? (Here comes the Google Image photos!)

I've heard that too. My sophmore year of high school, they tried to give me a revolution helmet. It took 1 game of wearing it before I told them what they could do with those helmets.

You can tell just by looking at it that it will impede peripheral vision.

That 6-5 230LB Peyton Manning guy wears one, and he is an all right player :)

Eventually they'll get around to blaming the helmet.

Well since Cutler isn't as good as Rex Grossman why should we care?
