SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A radio station fired three morning disc jockeys and seven other employees Tuesday after a woman died from drinking nearly two gallons of water in a contest.

The hosts of KDND-FM's "Morning Rave" were fired a day after the station announced it was suspending the show and investigating the death of 28-year-old Jennifer Lea Strange.

She died Friday after drinking the water in an attempt to win a Nintendo Wii, competing to see who could drink the most water without going to the bathroom.

John Geary, vice president and general manager of KDND's parent company, Entercom/Sacramento, announced that 10 employees were fired.

Strange died of water intoxication, according to a preliminary autopsy. Drinking large quantities of water rapidly can cause brain swelling and lead to seizures, coma and death.

The county sheriff's office said it was not investigating.

Good god. I have heard of water intoxication before, but not death from it. It happens to people that are on anti-psycotics. Some of the drugs prescribed give the users such bad cotton mouth that they just keep drinking water. I know that the water intoxication can make a person act and feel drunk, but I have never heard of a death from it.

Nutty.

This happens all the time to people who are on X. They feel dehidrated and drink tremendous amounts of water. The human body can only process so much water at one time.

They taught us this in Basic Training. Had stories of people dying of dehydration and overhydration. Not enough salt in your body to process the water, you basically drown yourself.

Nutty.

Dateline NBC did a story last year about a kid pledging a fraternity in college who had to drink large amounts of water in the same fashion. He died as well.

Really strange....and sad.

She drank TWO GALLONS in a very short amount of time. These fools at the radiostation should be arrested for I.M.

By the way, most people who do happen to die from taking E do so from dehydration, not over hydration.

Just an update on this story...

SACRAMENTO, California (Reuters) - The family of a California woman who died after participating in a radio station's water-drinking contest will sue the station, their lawyer said on Thursday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, a mother of three, died from suspected water intoxication after taking part in Friday's competition, "Hold your wee for a Wii." About 20 people tried to out-drink each other without going to the toilet to win a Nintendo Wii game console.

Sacramento station KDND-FM responded by firing 10 staffers, including several DJs. The DJs had joked about people dying from water intoxication and teasing Strange about her enlarged stomach.

"The station knew this was a dangerous and potentially deadly stunt, but flippantly dismissed the dangers," lawyer Roger Dreyer said in a statement. "Hearing the tape, it's very clear they knew of the dangers and could foresee that this could lead to Jennifer's death."

The station could not be reached for comment because its phone number was continuously engaged on Thursday evening.

Police are also investigating the death for possible criminal charges.

Water intoxication can prove deadly and cause irregular heartbeat, fluid in the lungs and swelling of the brain.

I think I will just partake of the orange next to me. Sticky suckers. But tasty.

They are back in season but not keyboard friendly. Get a Brawny or whatever handy.

Having a last name of Strange is strange in itself. I'll just have an orange now.

Yeah, that's the part I thought was really crappy too.

It's a tragedy in any case, but a bigger one to those 3 kids she'll never come home to. She was trying to win the Wii for her kids.
