If it was anybody but LT saying it I would just laugh it off.

It was bad enough losing to New England, but the way the Patriots reacted to their AFC divisional playoff win is what made LaDainian Tomlinson lose his cool.
Nate Kaeding's missed FG set off the Patriots celebration that set off the Chargers' mouths. The San Diego Chargers running back, upset that some Patriots were dancing on the Chargers logo at midfield after they had silenced the record crowd of 68,810 at Qualcomm Stadium, went after an unidentified Patriots player, yelling and pointing, and had to be restrained by a teammate and former Charger Reche Caldwell, who had a huge game for the Patriots.
"I would never react in that way. I was very upset," Tomlinson said. "When you go to the middle of our field and start doing the dance Shawne Merriman is known for, that is disrespectful. They showed no class and maybe that comes from the head coach."
Merriman, nicknamed "Lights Out," did a spasmodic dance to celebrate each of his NFL-high 17 sacks. Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said he some Patriots pointing to the scoreboard, mimicking the dance, and stomping on the Chargers logo at midfield.
"I think what got LT, and I was right there, was just a little of the taunting," Rivers said, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "Hey, celebrate -- we'd have been sprinting on the field, too, I guarantee you. But it was a little finger pointing and I don't know where it came from."
"It was upsetting to see because they won three Super Bowls," Merriman said, according to the Boston Herald. "It's like a guy on a fast break in basketball and dunking the ball and getting excited. You've won three Super Bowls. You don't do that."
"When you go to the middle of our field and start doing the dance Shawne Merriman is known for, that is disrespectful. They showed no class and maybe that comes from the head coach."
-- LaDainian TomlinsonThe Patriots rallied from eight points down in the fourth quarter. Tom Brady threw a touchdown pass to Caldwell with under five minutes remaining, then executed a fake on a direct snap to running back Kevin Faulk that helped spring the tying two-point conversion. Steven Gostkowski added a field goal with 1:10 to play to give the Patriots a 24-21 lead, and Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding missed his 54-yard attempt to tie in the final seconds.
The bottom line: No matter how they responded to the win, the Patriots are headed to next week's AFC Championship Game in Indianapolis against the Colts.
"They won and they deserve a lot of credit," Rivers said, according to the Union-Tribune. "Personally I was disappointed in the way they handled winning. ... But that's neither here nor there. They're playing next week and we're not."
"We lost to a better team today," Tomlinson said. "Hopefully the next opportunity we have we'll learn something from this."
Tomlinson ran for 123 yards and two scores, and caught two passes for 64 yards in the loss.
The Patriots and Chargers are scheduled to meet again in Foxboro next season, and some Chargers already have the date circled.
"Every time I will play New England it will be a personal grudge," linebacker Shaun Phillips said, according to the Union-Tribune. "That was very classless. ... When we went in and beat their head in New England [last season] ... we did nothing but compliment them and say they were a good team. We would never disrespect a team like that."
At least one Patriots player did not think the lack of class was so one-sided.
"[The San Diego players] talked from the beginning to the end," linebacker Rosevelt Colvin said, according to the Union-Tribune. "We'll take the win."

I dont get into the spastic dances. Which one has less class? The dude with the invented dance or the dude that imitates it? I have a lot of respect and admiration for LT. However, as much as he didnt like watching Pats do the Merriman dance, I dont like watching Merriman doing his spastic gyration after sacking Plummer or Cutler. I figure if you have a dance, you gotta figure someone is gonna mock your stupid dance when you dont play well.

Sour grapes. I think the classless one is Roid Merriman. He is the one who publicly said that he will send Jason Taylor a shirt and popcorn to watch the playoffs at home. He is the one who is going to have the NFL change its criteria for defensive/offensive player of the year and other awards to exclude cheats who get busted for steroids. He is the one who should be flagged for taunting when he does his gay dance.
I especially like this quote from the cheat:
"It was upsetting to see because they won three Super Bowls," Merriman said, according to the Boston Herald. "It's like a guy on a fast break in basketball and dunking the ball and getting excited. You've won three Super Bowls. You don't do that."
Why don't you take your own advise and act with some class after a sack. Its the same thing as a dunk on a fast break. Listening to this whining makes the Choke job all that more entertaining.

Just some sore losers who need to vent after a failure of a season. Rivers is one of the biggest whinning players in the league, does he forget his taunting after the denver game. Choke job couldn't of happened to a nicer group of players.

I don't believe LT needed to say anything. The Pats are increasingly showing what a classless team they really are. Brady goes off if his team is losing, as if it's his birth right to win every game. I remember his anger last year at Lynch when Lynch was in his face the whole game. Also he goes "Marino" on his teammates during games they are losing when his play has been less than spectacular this year. Then the coach last week. And the TO type behavior yesterday. LT should have kept his frustration silent, it was really with his own team.

Marsha Brady is a finger pointing crybaby. (S)he points his finger by what he say, and he also physically points his finger at people, mocking them on the field.

Actually, the more I think about it, there may be more to this. If I remember correctly, after the Chargers beat the Pats last year in a game, I don't remember exactly, but Marty said something about the Pats that they didn't like, especially Brady. I don't remember what he said, I think he was critiquing their team or something and I remember Brady saying something like "coach your team and let us worry about our own team" or words to that effect. Does anyone else remember that?

Hey LT, if you are frusterated about how YOUR team played, why not let Eric Parker, McCree and Florence know about it rather than acting like a two year old who had a lolipop taken from them? I lost a lot of respect for LT after that. His team has done plenty of taunting, celebrating, etc that has rubbed others the wrong way yet you don't heat the superstars from those teams crying like a girl with a skinned knee.

Totally agree with you, Gunns. The fans up here, and everyone around truly believes that they should go 19-0 every season. It's ALWAYS been this way. After any Pats loss, they NEVER give the other team credit. It's always, "Well, we didn't play well. We gave it away.....blah, blah."
After we spanked the Pats in week 3 this year, the local news was interviewing fans coming out of the Gillette....one drunk turd was saying, "Man, I just don't get it when we lose. We lose to these teams we should beat. Man, we have Brady and Belichick.....we shouldn't lose a game."

I'm glad that the Chargers lost, and I'll be happy if the Pats lose next week. But I'll agree that the Pats have no class. It's never talked about because they won so much and they have the golden boy. But they taunted the Eagles a lot during the Super Bowl. They did they Eagles bird dance during the game, and then after the final drive when they stopped the Eagles. I wouldn't consider the Eagles dance as taunting, or classless. Not like Merriman's dance. Nobody said anything about the Pats being classless after that game.

I remember that, and I remember a lot of us questioning why Brady was so mad about the comments. Marty made a fair comment about the Pats. I think he said that they had lost some key players to free agency, which is why they were struggling. Wasn't disrespectfull in any way. But Brady took it as disrespect, and showed his lack of class by calling out Marty.

I don't think this a big deal but I find it funny that Roid-rager can do his spasmic dances but when the other team wins the game and does it in front of you, then he say that's classless.
He just needs to shut up and pop his pills w/ his boy Bonds.
Chargers are doing so much talking for a team that fumbled the game away (the Pats did play great to come back and win BTW.
They should just shut their traps and move on to the offseason and get ready for '07.
What whiny babies.
But I do believe there is something to this thing about the Pats being classless.
Remember Bill after their regular season game against the Jets and Eric Mangini, he didn't even shake his hand.
You know, as a lifelong San Antonio Spurs fan, people have drawn comparisions between the Pats and Spurs for the way they go about themselves.
When it comes to organization and winning, the Pats are right there w/ the Spurs but when it comes to being classy and respectful, THEY DO NOT HOLD A CANDLE TO THE WAY THE SPURS.
You would never see TD, Manu or TP do the things the Pats players did after the game.

FOXBORO -- One after the other, sweaty, smiling members of the San Diego Chargers walked through the massive concrete artery that leads to the visitors locker room in Gillette Stadium.
As they walked, tearing grass-stained tape from their hands, they gloated aloud about their just-finished, 41-17 hammering of the New England Patriots.
"That's a [butt]-whipping," said defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.
"21-1, now," tackle Leander Jordan announced, referring to the Patriots' punctured 21-game home winning streak.

That's all I'm saying. By LT saying anything all he can do is tarnish his good name. He'll get a pass from almost everyone on this one, but he needs to separate himself from the assclown.
The Patriots have been smart enough to not employ any Merriman-types. This is what happens when you let your players give bulletin board material to the other team. That's why BB is such a boring robot most of the time and has everyone else to follow suit. Only say good things and keep the negative crap to yourself or behind closed doors.

If the Pats came into Denver and beat us, and proceeded to Dance at midfield on the Denver logo, with the mile high salute mixed in. And if Rod Smith charged out there yelling.
Would that make Rod Classless?
No question, Merriman's dance is a joke, Rivers should keep his mouth shut and so should the rest of the Chargers. But LT's outburst is totally understandable after the loss, he should be frustrated. Its always amusing when someone says that they themselves are classy, especially when they follow it up by insulting someone else's class. Its like bragging about how you are more modest then someone else.
And when did football become a class sport? Its nice when it naturally shows up in someone, but its not required and is pretty empty when forced. I dont check to make sure DE's are keeping thier pinky up when rounding the corner to kill a qb, and I am sure LT doesnt care if Merriman chews his steriods with his mouth open (he likes to mix up injectables and tablets to lessen bordom).

Damn .... you're right. Good memory. I think Marty opined that they should have done something differently in the game - a strategy or play-calling thing. That spat came when NE was really hitting their rock-bottom last year.

I'd like to see a replay of what the Pats did ... it's 3 hours to NFL Total Access. I'll have an opinion then ...
But LT was understandably really pissed. The Bolts were supposed to go all the way, remember, and LT was fresh off the ice-water splash of that dream-kill when he said this.

Marty didn't say anything of the sort. He mentioned that the Patriots had a lot of injuries and that might have played a factor in the game. Nothing derogitory at all.

I think what got LT, and I was right there, was just a little of the taunting," Rivers said,

Exactly he brought this crap on himself this is just a little way for the players to let him know they don't like what he did to their great sport by pissing on in. You don't see LT saying anything about that as his name goes in the record books (this year) i wonder how LT would feel about some kid breaking his records in a few years (and they did it) with the help of roids. I would bet his tune would change mighty fast and have an opinion fact is his pussy got hurt last night everybody on the planet was saying they would win it all and he believed it. I lost some respect so LT last night he had the chance to take the high road and picked throwing a tantrum instead.

I found this...
What you fail to mention in your absurdly one-sided account of the “celebration” was the complete lack of sportsmanship by the Chargers throughout the entire game. The best seen example was the unsportsmanlike conduct on Drayton Florence right in front of the line judge, erasing what would have been a 4th-and-15. A head butt right in front of the ref? That was just the most obvious. Chargers players were jawing the entire game, which Roosevelt Colvin discussed in his post game interview. Even on the Chargers’ last drive down the field, as they were rushing to spike the ball and desperately needed every yard they could get, San Diego lineman were jawing and shoving New England lineman well after the whistle. Combine all of that with LT’s little saunter into the end zone on his touchdown run around the left end, and what you are left with is a very classless, to use LT’s terms, San Diego team. Yes, the Patriots celebration was out of character and inappropriate, but let’s not pretend that it was unprovoked.

The patsie fans still don't give us any credit for last year's win....this is in response to an ESPN article today from a pats fan.
Mark:
I read your article, in the title of this e-mail, and found it to be very interesting, and informative.
However, I would like to clarify one sentence that you wrote.
This one.
"Now Belichick's team, a three-time Super Bowl entry, comes off looking like it's so shocked to win a playoff game that it barely knows what to do. "
Winning this game goes a lot deeper, for Patriot players and all Patriot fans. It meant more than just beating the Chargers and advancing onto the AFC Championship game.
It goes back to last year's divisional playoff, in Denver, a game in which the Pats lost under very unusual circumstances.
The Pats played very poorly in that game, made several mistakes, and even at that, they outplayed the Broncos, for the most part.
But coupled with their errors came a couple of very important official's decisions that went against them.
One a very bad call against the Patriots for pass interference which was no where near interference, setting up a Bronco Touchdown.
And, the officials refusal to see the ball go in and out of the end zone on Champ Bailey's interception, and return, which would have given the ball back to the Patriots.
Those two decisions cost the Patriots the game.
Yes, they have no one to blame but themselves, but those two decisions put the frosting on the cake for the Broncos.
Since that game, it has eaten at the insides of, not just us, the fans, but of the players who were involved in that game, and of course the coaches and management.
The Patriots had something to prove, and they waited, and waited, knowing that the day would come.
It came yesterday, In San Diego.
Hence, a very un-patriotic like celebration.
And I, for one, see nothing wrong with it.
In fact, if you care to take the time, you will find a video of Merriman, at their rally, saying he was going to punch Brady in the mouth, followed by choruses of "Brady Sucks, Brady Sucks."
So, if LT wants to discuss "UN-class" he should begin at home first.

So you would had no problem if one of the broncos, like Rod Smith, had went after Rivers for making the mocking jester of mile high salute to the fans at Mile High???
It depends on how and when it happens, just like the game yesterday.
If Rivers copied/mocked/whatever a Mile High salute after a TD pass, I don't know... Players copy other celebrations all the time after a big play so would it really be such a big issue? But at the same time, I feel that you just do your own celebration (or actually do nothing at all and just get ready for the next play) and don't copy or mock the other team.
But if the game ended and instead of going to shake Cutler's/Plummer's/Shanahan's/whoever's hand, he went and stood on the 50 yard line and did it, then I would have a big problem with it. That's poor sportsmanship.
But anyway, to answer your question, I guess I wouldn't have an issue if a Bronco player got angry about it in the first scenario even though it would seem a bit petty. Because it would be a little strange I guess, since this happens just about every week. But I would say the Bronco player would be 100% in the right to do something about it in the second scenario.

The Patriots have been smart enough to not employ any Merriman-types. This is what happens when you let your players give bulletin board material to the other team. That's why BB is such a boring robot most of the time and has everyone else to follow suit. Only say good things and keep the negative crap to yourself or behind closed doors.
I like the fact the Patriots try to speak with one voice. I like the way the Patriots foster competition without developing the Merriman type braggarts. Guys like Merriman are magnets for crap and it's too bad that stupid fans don't understand a player defending his team isn't a horrible thing.
Because the Patriots never really apologized for the incident they are leaving that all on LT because it was "after the game" and the cameras were off. It's one of those "private" jabs that some coaches don't mind encouraging. FYI: The players on the field aren't always polite to each other verbally. Who knows what earful Drayton got to make him lose his frigging mind.
There is an obvious history between these two teams. I think what makes this loss a sour loss is that the Chargers COULD HAVE won this one. It was there own mistakes and lack of play that cost them the game. Brady didn't do anything incredible. He just played consistent.
I don't know if the Pats are classy or not but this left a sour taste. People are using this to attack the Pats or the Chargers and it's a bit of a bar fight with nobody coming out clean.
Let media makes money on blood, fear and hate. Golly. I wonder what powers online sports bulletin boards? Hmmm. Can I help you enjoy your Snickers bar?

Don't bother.
For the ones here feel that LT is a prick, they don't know what class really is.
Some people are taking this opportunity to bash LT because it's probably going to be the only chance they'll ever get.
Maybe if your boys didn't yell and hoot "F the Patriots, F that team, wipe the look of shock from your faces" last year, following the 41-17 REGULAR SEASON WIN, then they wouldn't have PUNKED you guys and made you their bicthes on the field, after the game and inside the locker room following it.
What come around goes around.
Put up or shut up.
The Pats put up.
The Chargers should SHUT UP!!!

120 messages in this thread, and only about 10 recognizing that football players and their fans worrying about "class" and "respect", are like prostitutes arguing about virginity and love.
Are you kidding???
Most football players these days are no more than highly paid thugs and mercenaries looking for fame, money, and fleeting glory playing a game. This is not world peace or curing cancer. CLASS?? God, they should only hope to ever see it some day. And don't tell me about some single exception that is supposed to disprove the rule. Most of these guys don't earn their paychecks nor do they earn their fans respect. They are playing for money and personal glory - not the fans.
I love watching them beat each others brains in, and I love following the Broncos and seeing them win - but keep things in proper perspective. I'll continue to watch and cheer the Broncos to victory, and I'll be disappointed and depressed when they lose, but I see no reason to give these guys both huge paychecks and my love and loyalty. They are doing this for themselves, not for me or for you or any noble reasons.
So screw Merriman, and screw LT, and screw classless Pats and Chargers. Like who even cares....

This is why the Pats acted the way they did and I don't blame them. They had 15 months of this building up in them...
One after the other, sweaty, smiling members of the San Diego Chargers walked through the massive concrete artery that leads to the visitors locker room in Gillette Stadium.
As they walked, tearing grass-stained tape from their hands, they gloated aloud about their just-finished, 41-17 hammering of the New England Patriots.
"That's an ass-whipping," said defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.
"21-1, now," tackle Leander Jordan announced, referring to the Patriots' punctured 21-game home winning streak.
"F*** New England and their team," suggested cornerback Drayton Florence. Florence then said to the collection of onlookers in the hallway. "Get the look of shock off your faces. Don't be shocked. We beat your ass."
What comes around goes around. They can talk the talk but can't walk the walk. Put up or shut up. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander.

How fitting is it that Florence is the one that took that absolutely braindead penalty for taunting and head butting Daniel Graham?

Is Belicheck and his bunch classless?
Doesnt refer to an ex assistant by name in the media and then doesnt shake his hand.
Shoves a camera guy for no reason.
Routinely lets their field go to absolute crap every postseason so it will slow down Indy's passing game.(Nice accross the board leveling of the field by the NFL...joke.)
After we beat them last year Brady throws a hissy about Marty shouldnt talk about his God given team.
You tell me.
Yes Merriman does that stupid dance. I really cant stand it either. And I have NEVER had a problem with other players mocking it DURING the game. Chad Johnson did it this year although Merriman wasnt at the game so I kinda thought that was chicken bleep. Other players have mocked it DURING the game and like I said that is fine. The problem occurs when guys are meeting at half field to shake hands and guys instead are doing crap like this, this DOES cross over into the taunting zone. I really can see why LT was mad.
Tell me the truth. If the Patriots were running into the middle of the field after beating you guys in Denver. And if they were doing the mile high salute instead of shaking hands like half of the other guys. You really dont think some Denver players wouldnt have blasted them?

The Chargers are trash talking bunch anyway.... Colvin said they were yappin' the whole game.
Besides... how is Merriman's dance not considered to be classless to begin with?

No doubt. How is anything associated with Merristeroid labled anything but classless? The guy is the epitome of what some would call a "flavor clown."

Well how many of us pissed and moan about rivers in your pic at the bottom of your posts? How many players whined? Kind of funny rivers thinks it's okay to taunt until someone taunts him. Hypocrite if you ask me.

LT needs to shut the hell up. Plain and simple. I do find it ironic that some people say the Chargers gave the game away last Sunday but then will say the exact opposite about the Broncos beating the Patriots last year in the playoffs. Did the Chargers choke? Absolutely. But the Patriots still had to make the plays necessary to win the game in the end. Something Denver has a hard time doing in crunch time when given the same opportunities.

I guess the players feel there's a difference between doing during the game and after it. I mean you can do something about it during a game by making a big play for your team. Once the game's over then there's really nothing you can do about it.
Which is why what Hobbs did was kinda smart. If only he had done the Lights Out dance during the game.
Anyways, this whole thing is just blown out of proportion.

what's the big deal anyway? If you do a stupid ass dance such as that you know that it will rub people the wrong way and they will retaliate. Just be man enough if you dish it out to take it back. LT needs to talk to roid boy and tell him to cut the crap before calling out the other team or just win the game.
