Up 8 with 7 minutes left to go. I am laughing my ass off right now.
Marty will now get fired, they will shake up the staff. Wade Philipps will probably be gone... who knows if the 3-4 will still be around.
This is a Broncos Dream come true.

I don't know if it was a Marty choke , as much as it was just another day at the office for the Pats .......... Same ole Pats , hang around late , find away to win ....I didn't buy that line of crap about the Chargers being best team in the NFL , I still say the Steelers were a much better team in Brady's 1 st year , the pats beat them ,I knew the pats beat the Chargers .......... only thing that did take me by surprise is Brady being off target so much .........

I loved seeing a Marty team choke again. I wanted them to lose from day one.
I am very surprised about the LT fit. That seemed so uncharacteristic of him, and his excuse for it was pretty poor too. ???

Exactly. That's why it's a Marty choke. They should have been able to capitalize on 3 INT's, tons of QB pressures and even a few gift calls from the refs.
I never did think the bolts were all that. Many (say again.........MANY) of their wins to get that 14-2 record were come from behind wins were I think they were totally outplayed for the whole game except the end. Now, karma, the same was done to them. What's that song by the Stones? How does it feel?

LT: Prime example of that old saying about how anyone can be gracious when times are good. It's when things go wrong that true character comes out, and i think we caught a pretty good glimpse today. Some of you are going to blast me and say, "But, but, he just gives the ball to the ref every time.." It's a front, he couldn't keep it up forever.

I admit to the early ambivalent feelings about this game. I don't particularly like either of those two teams, but I dislike the Dolts and the Mullets more and they didn't figure in todays game. Perhaps the Media's (read ESPN) crapola about the chuggers turned me off to them more than the Pats, so I am happy with the outcome. I thought it had noice moments of conmedy and pathos - you know, entertainment.
Still I would like someone to put mellonbhead on his arse again - like Pitt did last year. Will the NFL monitor the use of the sound system at that dome? The Saints may be the least unlikable team out there right now.

This was your best chance this season. Next season you will have a 1st place schedule, a new coach and probably injuries that you didn't have this year. The stars aligned for the Bolts and you guys dropped the ball and took advantage of Denver twice...
WILL NOT HAPPEN NEXT SEASON.
I was praying that something happened to keep SD away from a super bowl this year, as next year, I think we will be more than capable enough of doing that.

that is not a fair assement. A more equal one would be the 2005 Broncos to the 2006 Chargers. Except one difference, WE BEAT THE PATS. TOUGH BREAK. And we had a career failure at QB, a 34 year old running back, and a 36 year old wide receiver at the tail end of his Hall of Fame career.
You had LT (in his prime), the Pro Bowler Rivers, and Antonio Gates (in his prime as well). You had the sack leader and the 9 Pro Bowlers.
Yet... 2005 Broncos, 1-1 in playoffs. 2006 Chuggers, 0-1.

Three things come to mind reading the previous posts...
1. Marty will not be in SD next season.

3. Denver will be representing the AFC West in the playoffs next season as we are the only team that can win any games.

I don't want to crow over the Chargers loss. I think it's pathetic that nobody in the AFCW can bring respect to this division. We had essentially three one and out playoff losses. If our division is so tough why can't anybody in it put anything away?
I am sick of east coast teams getting all the propers. Chargers should have won this one. The Pats versus Colts game is a compromise. One of those teams should be from the AFCW.
The teams that are winning are executing. They aren't powerhouse offenses, defenses or remarkable special teams. They aren't that much smarter. They are just tougher and why anyone would gloat at this point is kind of soft if you want to know the truth about it.

This troll is here. I'm not going anywhere.
As for LT's comments, I remember people here did not care for Rivers doing the taunt in Denver (the one in my avatar). I'm not really big on celebration dances (Yes, I don't really care for Merriman's dance. Just make the play and then get ready for the next one.) but that's something you do in the spur of the moment of a big play. It's accepted in the NFL now (though they've banned TD celebrations). But you never taunt the other team.
Everyone called T.O.'s taunt on the Dallas star classless and applauded the guy who tackled him when he tried it a second time. Essentially one Patriots player (I heard it was Asante Samuel) did the same thing right as the game ended on the Charger's helmet in the middle of the field. I applaud LT for trying to stop him.
I'm not sure why LT made the comment about Belichick (maybe there's something here that we don't know about) but he was dead on about Asante Samuel. You don't do some premeditated dance/taunt at the end of the game in disrespect of the other team. That is one hundred percent classless.

There's a bit of a difference, in my opinion, between the TO thing and Samuel doing something like it. TO was just trying to disrespect the organization. The NE players were just mocking a SD player who could order food at a drive in and do the spasm shake to congratulate himself. Seriously, as someone pointed out earlier, Merriman got pressure on Brady and forced an incomplete and did the damn dance. That's retarded. I see the mocking of Merriman as a personal mocking, not a mocking of the organization.
Now, if NE players had went out and done something like... say, gather around the Chargers logo and start kicking dirt on it... stand on top of it and squat and pretend to take a dump on the logo.. something like that would be a shot of unneeded disrespect. Mocking a fool who is the definition of showboat doesn't hurt me too much.

I agree.
Before this game was played you saw posts all over the internet like "I'd like to see LT succeed, but that Merriman is an idiot."
Well, this was the whole Patriots' team philosophy retaliating at another one of the NFL's loudmouth idiots. Every offseason teams wonder if they should give guys like Freddie Mitchell or T.O. a shot when they are available and the Pats keep proving you don't need buffoons like that on your team!

I understand that you guys don't like Merriman. But when you go to the middle of the field and dance on the team logo as the game ends, that is not disrespecting one player, that is disrespecting the entire team.
Don't tell me if a Charger player would have gone to the middle of the field after they beat you guys this year and did a dance on the Bronco logo when players are out there shaking hands, you guys wouldn't be livid.

I don't know which is the magic piece to the puzzle but I have a theory that if BB or Brady is out of the picture, there'd be a talent shortage on that team. Somehow they always seem to fill the wholes and make things work but it can't work forever.
Anyone who's seen the emergence of those WRs in NO knows how a QB can make receivers look magnificent but what happens when that QBs gone? Before Brees the only threats they had down there was Horn and Stallworth... Stallworth is traded, Horn was hurt and every other receiver looks like an all pro. Take away Brees and they all look like 5th and 6th round picks again.
And back to the threat, players need to be treated like they're holding a job, not like they own the organization. Do that and you'll see a lot less TOs. Unfortunately, the way people treat TO, I'd say we're on pace for more and more of them in our future.

I fear that if the Colts beat us then PayMeATon will finally get his ring...and that will make him more unbearable than he is now. Plus I think it would be extremely unfair to Marino. ;D
BTW, I have to give kudos to Todd Sauerbrun.
Aside from the one kick that went out of bounds and let SD start at the 40, he was great.

If, hypothetically, a Charger were going to mock the Broncos players. What dance would he do in the middle of the field? The Salute? That's the closest you could get. Maybe Mike Bell's titty shake after his big runs but even that is hardly the Spasm Shake.
And I see what you're saying, I'd likely take offense if I were a Chargers player too. I just think Merriman kinda set the team up for such an insult.

There is an epidemic of idiocy among NFL players. And a certain amount of it carries over to the fan base who thinks it's okay - as long as the guy is on their team.
Personally I'd be more upset with the couple of complete muggings on Charger receivers Asanti got away with (wasn't it the Patriots DB's who got all these nonsense calls started) then doing the classless Merriman dance. Two morons. Who would've ever thought?
I like Belicheck hanging out in a sweatshirt with the sleeves cut off. I like NE taking bit role players cast off from other teams and putting them in Championship games. It's frickin' amazing.

Oh, Merriman or any other flamboyant player sets himself up to get mocked.
Players mock him all the time. When Rivers gets sacked, they sometimes do the dance or when someone scores a touchdown, they sometimes do the dance. I see nothing wrong with that.

It's not just the act of doing it. It's doing it in the location that he did and the timing of it that LT didn't care for.
Obviously, emotions are flowing at that point and I don't think he should have said the thing about Belichick. I think that part was probably out of frustration but this isn't the first time a post game incident has happened. When we beat the Patriots last year, Brady didn't even go to midfield and shake anyone's hand. He just ran to the locker room and later bitched out Marty for "talking about his team."
There is obvious bad blood between the two teams.

I'm not trying to paint Tomlinson as a punk here. To say he was disappointed would be a gross understatement. After all of the garbage years he stuck it out through, his dream season (14-2, MVP, TD record) came to an end a whole lot sooner than he anticipated. That's soul crushing disappointment, so I can understand him being in a foul mood.
That said, he can't let himself get drawn in by the actions of some knucklehead. He's better than that and everyone knows it.
All of this really isn't a big deal, it's all just kind of a shock considering who was involved. This doesn't suddenly turn Tomlinson into Brian Cox or anything, but he should have just shaken hands with the Pats players and walked off the field with his head up. That's what people have come to expect from a class guy like him.

I agree, that would have been the better thing to do in hindsight but at the same time I don't fault him for what he did in the heat of the moment. He was defending the pride of his team.
I hope any NFC teams wins it. What's worse, watching more manning commericals or listening to Brady go on about how much life sucks if you don't win it all. Both Manning and Brady are big time pouters when they lose. Manning is worse though, he'll complain after an incomplete pass, no way it could be his fault.
I think this could be the year the Colts get it done. Their defense is stepping up at just the right time. Reminds of the 1st superbowl Denver won. Defense wasn't great that year but they were damn good in the playoffs.

I am not going to gloat on the Chargers. After all, they didnt show up and it looked like the retards of the Faiders came to play. Unneccessary Roughness gets the Pats the ball again and they score, dropped passes and not forget McCree doesnt just knock down the 4th down play but picks off the pass way off the scrimmage and ends up getting it stripped. Nice job Retardos.
400HZ had the balls to come back at least. Let us all not forget that we pulled the same crap in 1996 with that fatso Gerald perry couldnt get his tub ass off the field that cost us the win versus the Jags. Weren't we 8 and 0 that season also?We came back the next two years and won it all. This could be a stepping stone for the Bolts. We have enough problems to get us over the 9 and 7 record. We are still looking up to them. Let us hope our gloating is equal to a celebration on another playoff win for 2007. My only fear in the Saints winning it all is an offseason full of "Team of Destiny" talk. That and the fact that just a few years ago, they couldn't fill the Saints stadium and the team was considering a move. Now it's cool to be a Saints fan and the team is winning and everyone in the city comes out as hardcore fans. I'd rather a team with loyal, year in and year out, fans wins it. Those fans deserve it, Saints fans don't.

They said the same thing about the Yankees after 9/11/01. I hate the Yankees and there was no way a disaster like 9/11 to get me to root on the Yankees. Saints are a nice story because of Bush, Brees and their coach. I couldn't give a rat's A$$ about the fans if I hated them. But really, how can you hate the Saints. It isnt like they did anything wrong to the Broncos except spoil a 1994 reg season ending to get us 8 and 8 after starting 0 and 4. Ill take the Pats and whoever wants to lose for the NFC.

I'm rooting for the Bears at this point. If they could get Rex to be consistent they could be a really dominating team. It'll all depend on the card Rex draws that day, the good Rex or bad Rex card. I'd like to see Thomas Jones win a SB though. Even when the Bears suck you can expect Jones to hammer that ball right up the gut of opposing defenses. He's pretty damn good. It all comes down to them being the only team I don't have anything against. Kinda like the 04 presidential elections when it comes to the other team... one side sucks, but the other side sucks and has a funny shaped head... It's easier to just go with Da Bears.

Don't get confused by media spin. EVERY TEAM is a team of destiny. The Saints are the proud owner of 22 years of losing seasons. A superbowl run is exactly what this city lives. I've been around the Saints since they were the "Ain'ts." I don't like Tom Benson. I don't like the city. I don't like their fans. That place deserves a Superbowl everybit as much as anyone competing right now.

If the tables were turned and it was Pats players dancing on the Bronco logo...yeah, I might be upset but then again, I don't think we would have had a player on the Bronco team do what Merriman had been doing to your team. I also don't think they would have refused to shake hands and call out our coach like LT did to yours. Heck, SHanahan even gave LT a hug at midfield after the Chargers won the AFC West.

i disagree
I think so. I mean, they were basically stopped on two possessions, one that went on to be a field goal because of Drayton Florence's penalty, and one that extended to be a touchdown due to McCree's fumble. Also, Vincent Jackson nearly had a touchdown, incomplete by a toe. The loose balls bouncing their way to Patriot players as well. Lets face it, some days the ball just bounces your way and things go your way. In order to win, sometimes you need to be lucky and good.

Two division titles and three winning seasons in the last three years.
AJ Smith and Marty have done a great job turning this team around. Obviously no playoff wins is a big disappointment but it's a young team with a lot of talent. The salary cap situation is good and most of those young players are signed for the next several years at least. I like the direction this team is going in.
Though I don't feel the blame for this loss is on Marty, he may very well take the fall for it. Something does need to change for this team to go to the next level though.

You have to look at it from our point of view. If you were a Charger fan, wouldn't you be excited about this team, compared to four years ago?
Personally, I'm not sold on Cutler yet but I can see why Bronco fans are excited about the upcoming years, with him replacing Plummer. It's all from the point of view.

This thread is moronic.
The Chargers probably have the best young core in the NFL today. And after that playoff one and done, they will probably get rid of the one weakeness in their team in Schotty.
With plenty of cap room and a sterling recent history in drafting top talent, the Broncos FO could learn a lot from San Diego. I hate to say it but the Chargers are looking like a pretty dominant team for the next three years at least.

Rivers though, played at a higher level than Brees did last year for us. And he came through in the clutch several times this year alone, when Brees did maybe several times in his four years here.
I think it boils down to the fact that Rivers seems to fit this offense better than Brees. Brees still played well here the system he is in now in New Orleans is really making him shine.
Also, why does Rivers look to throw deep so much?
The offense San Diego runs is an version of the old Coryell offense. This offense likes to go deep and stretch the field. The problem we had when Brees was here was that his deep ball was very weak. They had to adjust the offense a bit for Brees and do a lot more shorter routes.
Obviously though, if you've seen Brees this year, he's throwing a great deep ball. He is truely the bionic man. That surgeon who repaired his shoulder did some amazing work. His arm strength looks completely different this year than it ever has.

That game pretty much went exactly the way I thought it would. The old vets on NE kept their poise and just stayed close until the end. The young turks on Sandy Eggo lost their cool and cost their team the game with some stupid penalties and TOs. Even as badly as Brady played, he still made the plays he had to make. I don't know quite what it is that makes a team play like champions, instead of pretenders, but I know that the Pats have it, and the Chargers don't. It took the J'Ville debacle for the Broncos to get it. Maybe this game is what it will take the Chargers. We'll see next year. I know the media anointed the Chargers as the "best team in the NFL" this year, but this game just goes to prove, you've got to dig deeper than your press clippings.

Probably not on external FAs. He'll use it to lock up his own young players who are RFAs and try to sign Dielman back. I agree that they won't splash out on some high profile FA.
The way they've been drafting, they don't need to.
Hopefully they'll fire Schotty so that a new coach coming in will shake up the staff and bring in his own guys which will set the team back a few years. That and some of their LBs are getting old (Polk etc). Other than that I don't really see any weakenesses on that team.

Who thinks that game reminded them of a former "hall of famer" quarterback who took his team on his back and just got it done when it counted? (49 times)
SD needs to take care of their composure issues before I'll consider them a serious contender. Penalties gave that game to the Pats late, and its not the first time they've put games in jeopardy by thugging it up on the field to erase a positive play.

The entire AFCW is littered with teams who are nothing but spoilers. They can't do anything in the playoffs but they sure can make your regular season miserable.
Chargers had opportunities to win. They didn't execute. Marty could take a fall but it's not entirely because of his records in playoffs but the way he conducts himself with front office. If they lose Marty the Chargers, despite having talent, could face a bump in the road. Chargers management isn't the sharpest in the league.

It does Fontaine but at some point you just have to be realistic. I've hommered on with the Broncos my whole life. Seems like every year I'd say "We can make the superbowl".....and alot of times during my life we did!
I don't want to get into a QB debate but I thought we had little to no chance to make the playoffs even after the switch to Cutler and made my orangemane bet accordingly. It was the first time in many years I didn't think we had a playoff team. It's hard to be objective but I don't think some posters look at all positions/depth/coaching of this team when they make their BOLD predictions. You don't live and die with one player. Rex Grossman comes to mind.
I like the direction we are heading but we need to get a few years of solid drafting under us. The statement "We are one or two players away" by our Broncos admin doesn't work for me anymore. We need alot more than that and SD is way ahead of us at this point for me to talk smak.

I understand the draft is hit and miss but since our SB years we've barely developed starters from our 1st day picks and that's the future of the franchise.
Last year's draft with Cutler/Walker/Schef was a great step forward so I hope they can continue doing it. But not if (according to burger bill) they're ok with the DL talent they already have!

Ultimately it's the same reason why he's lost 6 straight postseason games now.

Look a day later I am still in a funk.
First Marty DID NOT lose this game! Certain plays by certain players did. Muffed punt by Eric Parker, fumble an int by Marlon McCree when he could have just knocked it down(it was 4th down.)
The 4th and eleven is the only Marty thing that was baffling. They didnt kick it because it was into the wind so it was more like a 55 yarder. Marty would punt 99% of the time in that situation and I think he let Cam Cameron make the call. That is NOT Marty Ball.
AS for choke job etc. Oh well you can lay it on certain players but it ws obvious our team dominated the physical battles they just lost a few mental ones. I stress A FEW. But that usually makes the difference in the playoffs huh!
Being that you guys Im sure are enjoying this alot. Ill leave you with this.
1996 you guys did the same thing against the Jags and then won back to back super bowls. So teams CAN learn from this pain and come back. Our nucleus is young and strong, even you guys cant deny that.
Another thing please dont tell me I am a "fake" fan or some other crap. I have followed the chargers since I was seven years old and 27 years later and now 100's miles away in Ohio still do. Look at the year I registered here, we were not exactly kicking butt then.

Isn't it the coaches job to have his team both mentally and physically ready. Wasn't it one of his players who head butted a Pats player only to recieve a 15 yard penalty that led to a FG. Wasn't it a player who intercepted a pass and then tried to run for more yards when it was stripped. Wasn't it the coach who challenged that play when clearly it was called right only to lose and lose a crucial Time Out. Yeah, Marty has A LOT to do with this loss.

What did Rivers ever do to earn your scorn?
Act like a dick when he played here this year, I felt like throwing my flask upside his head......... and his bandwagon fans who constantly drooled while talking about him the past few weeks got a dose of STFU yesterday.

Oh...forgot to mention that Marty is also responsible for not kicking that FG and going for it on 4th and 11. That was dumb and quite possibly the difference maker despite all the other wackiness.

Look at the year I registered here, we were not exactly kicking butt then.
there is one thing you can count on in football, Marty makes the playoffs and Marty's teams always find a way to choke away a win. Bank on it.
Don't compare your team to our 1996 team, we won the #1 seed about week #13 and we started resting players and lost our edge
you can not say that, you had to play until the last week of the season to wrap up the #1 seed
like we have been telling you SD fans, Marty is who he is...a terrible playoff coach

I'm glad Denver fans are happy when we lost.
I was sure happy when the 49ers killed your post season hopes two weeks ago and I was happy when the Steelers knocked you out last year as well.
It's the way it should be between rival fans.

Yep. But what have you done lately?
Having championships in the past is great. Don't get me wrong. As a Charger fan, I'm dying for them to win one. But the reality is that there are only four teams who matter right now. In one week, it will be two. And then only one.
What happened almost a decade ago doesn't mean as much to me as what's happening in the present.
Nice trophys though.

Actually if you look at some of the Who Do You Want Threads, several people here were pulling for the Chargers. Many people here covet LaDanian. Appreciate Gates. (If Merriman cancelled the crap he'd be on the list, too.)
Most of the grief you are getting here is related to the improbable occurance of Marty losing another playoff game.
Where is that KC fan who repeated "There's Always Next Year" about 50 times on a thread? We really need his wisdom now.

I realize that. Kind of torn on that one. It's nice to see LT and Gates respected by other fans but it just feels weird to have rival fans rooting for your team.
Anyway, I'm taking this loss a lot better than I expected. Last night I was majorly disappointed but I'm over it today. Feels a lot better to have that bad feeling gone.

Man did you see all those rallies and parades and a concert with P.O.D and that dumb a s s Merriman. Well that was all real worth it, call it whatever you want, and no you guys will not be like the 1996 Broncos and turn your next few seasons around, you dont have class, even if young dumb LT says you do. You choked and it feels great, and when your done crying about it, you can turn around to your worthless coach and kiss his a s s goodby.

Yeah, with all those lombardies littering up your trophy case we'll never be worthy compared to the mighty Chargers. Hilarious!
How 'bout you guys actually win one before running your mouths all season long. It was soooooo much fun watching Shortenheimer fall short yet again, especially after hearing how hes was gonna do sooooooo much better with this team. We heard the same stupid sh*t from Chiefs fans when Marty was choking away playoff chances in KC. Marty and Martyball suck, plain and simple. Now you guys will get a new coach, he'll bring a new staff and by the time you've got it all figured out, you'll be re-building. See ya in another decade or so. ;D

Yeah, silly me. I need to go into full depression and stop everything in my life because my team lost a football game.
I'm bummed out about the loss but it's not like I was skipping around town today singing happy tunes. I've had much bigger disasters in my personal life, like losing loved ones and close friends. I've learned how to put things into perspective in life and get over bad events.
The majority of my spare time revolves around football. Either reading message boards, listening to Sirius NFL radio, watching the NFL Network, going to games, watching games on TV, talking football with my friends...
I wonder what my life would be like if I weren't just a casual fan...

I would think being a Charger fan you would be really good at not being too dissapoionted over a playoff loss. Chargers been doing that since Dan Fouts.
Heck, I still haven't totally forgiven the Jagwads... and I still hold a grudge against the Cowgirls, Giants, Redskins, and Niners, too.

The big issue for Chargers now is where they will play. Spanos has a ton of cap money but he is notoriously cheap. Chargers roster filled with players who are going to want more money. The fans will want FA to be signed but I doubt Chargers will do much of that. If Chargers don't get a new stadium then they wont be able to compete revenue wise with the rest of the big boys.
