Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, one of the hottest candidates during the current NFL hiring cycle, has signed a four-year contract to become the new head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

Whisenhunt will be introduced as the successor to Dennis Green at a Tuesday news conference. Financial details of the contract -- which includes a team option for a fifth year -- were not yet available. Based on what the Cardinals have paid coaches in the past, Whisenhunt probably will earn an annual salary in the $2.5 million range.

"In the end, we felt that Ken was the best fit for this organization," said Rod Graves, Cardinals vice president for football operations, "and we felt that because of the leadership that he portrayed. He presented a well-organized and thorough plan moving forward. We liked it.''

Whisenhunt, 44, met for a second time with Arizona officials on Friday, as the Cardinals continued their follow-up round of interviews aimed at finding a new coach. The Cardinals interviewed eight candidates in the initial round, then brought back Houston Texans assistant head coach Mike Sherman and Whisenhunt for second interviews.

The second interview went well and the two sides opened negotiations on Saturday. There had been reports the Cardinals first offered the position to Sherman, but team officials denied that.

"It became apparent to us, particularly when we got into the second phase of our interview process, that Ken began to separate himself from the other candidates," Graves said.

Whisenhunt also interviewed for openings with the Steelers, the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins.

An Atlanta native who played collegiately at Georgia Tech, and then played tight end for the Falcons for four (1985-88) of his nine NFL seasons, Whisenhunt certainly seems a good fit for a Cardinals team that is loaded with young offensive talent.

Arizona was seeking a coach to work with quarterback Matt Leinart, and Whisenhunt's development of Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh impressed the Cardinals' brass. Arizona also has solid young players on defense and Whisenhunt might retain current coordinator Clancy Pendergast to lead that unit.

A fearless playcaller, and adept at creating advantageous matchups, Whisenhunt has been Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator since 2004. Under his stewardship, the Steelers' offense statistically ranked No. 7 in the NFL in 2006. The Steelers were 16th in 2004 and 15th in 2005, when they won Super Bowl XL.

Although some perceive Whisenhunt's strengths as the creative use of formations, motion and personnel packages, he also believes in a power-based running game.

Good hire. Unfortunately for Cardinals fans, Bidwill is still the owner.

I know he interviewed w/ the Steelers once for the job but why they wouldn't hire him because he's a bright offensive mind and would continue the chemistry he already had w/ those guys.

I wonder why the Steelers are being so slow in their search. Are they waiting for someone who is still coaching w/ the one of the teams remaining in the playoffs.

I thought KW would have been a logical choice for the Steelers job.

It's possible he wasn't interested in following Cowher. I've always felt "successors" are in a bad spot and usually don't work out. Probably a better idea for him to try and make his own mark with a team with little history of success.

Thats a good point. I remember Ray Handley (I think I have his name right) when he took over for Bill Parcells after he left the Giants in the early 1990s.

That was a disaster.

I guess it depends on the coach because Bill Cowher took over for Chuck Knoll and Jimmy Johnson took over for Tom Landry.

I think that's a great hire for the Cards.

This is two fold for me... I love seeing a Pittsburgh offense that was getting rolling to lose their driving force from last season. Start over b!tches.

I think Whisenhunt knew a guy with a name like Russ Grimm was just a better fit as the head man in Steel Town.

I think he also enjoys the prospct of all those offensive weapons in AZ. Maybe he didn't want whatever was left of Big Ben after Cowher tried to ruin the kid this year.

It will be interesting to see where Big Ben's development goes from here. So far, he's a guy who'll make plays, but when they started asking him to throw it more than 20-25 times a game this season he piled up the turnovers. Next year will be big for him. Is he going to be a guy you can trust to win you the game when he has to throw it over 30 times?

Exactly! Even more bad news for Cards is that Bidwell Jr. is just like his father. Stupid and cheap.

Never. Sorry...but I'm a firm believer that the Cardinals can't possibly do anything to right that ship.

The funny part there is Tuna kept hemming and hawing and screwing around and nobody knew whether he would retire or not. Everybody assumed as soon as he left, his boy Belichick would step up from DC and become head coach. Well, old Tuna fiddles around so long, Belichick says screw it and accepts a total control deal in Cleveland. A day or two later, Parcells steps down and Handley is handed the job. Lots of people think Parcells wanted to keep his pal Belichick out of the head job in New York to protect his own legacy there.

I thought for sure that Norm Chow would be hired because of his connections with Matt Leinart. He also deserves to be a head coach in the league. Good Hire by the Cards though!
